Microsoft Internship 2027: Real Pay, Eligibility, Interviews and Deadline

Microsoft Internship 2027: Real Pay, Eligibility, Interviews and Deadline
The real Microsoft internship is a paid 12-week job, with US base pay of $5,690 to $11,210 a month. Here is who can apply, how the technical interviews work, the September to April window and why the Forage “virtual internship” is something else.

A Microsoft internship is a paid, roughly 12-week job at a Microsoft office, open to students enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree who have at least one term left after the internship ends. In the US, the base pay range on a summer 2027 software engineering posting is $5,690 to $11,210 a month, or $7,410 to $12,250 in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York. Microsoft takes applications on a rolling basis from September to April, so the Microsoft internship for summer 2027 is open now and roles close as they fill.

Be careful with pages that advertise a “Microsoft internship” you can start any time, from home, with a free verified certificate. That is a self-paced job simulation on Forage, an online learning platform. It is useful practice, but it is not a Microsoft job, it pays nothing, and Microsoft does not issue the certificate. This guide covers the real internship: roles, pay, eligibility, the technical interviews and how international students can take part.

Real internship or Forage simulation?

The confusion comes from one popular listing that tells readers to sign up on InsideSherpa (Forage’s old name) for a “Microsoft internship” lasting one to six months. Here is how the two differ.

If you do a Forage simulation, list it on your CV under projects or courses and describe it accurately. Calling it a Microsoft internship will fall apart in the first interview.

What Microsoft interns actually do

Microsoft interns are placed on a product team and own a real piece of work for the summer, with a manager and a mentor. Software engineering is the biggest track, and the postings split it into focus areas.

  • CoreAI (summer 2027): software engineering with an AI and machine learning focus in Redmond. The posting prefers experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch or scikit-learn, and with AI coding tools.
  • Systems: low-level work on operating systems, networking, storage or firmware, for students with an interest in systems programming.
  • Fullstack: building software with teammates and giving technical input to program and product managers (a recent posting was based in Cambridge, Massachusetts).

Microsoft also hires interns in product management, design, data science, finance and other areas through separate postings. For second-year students in the US there is the Explore program: interns work in a small pod on one shared project and rotate through software engineering, product management and technical program management over 12 weeks in Redmond.

Microsoft internship pay and benefits

US postings publish a base pay range. Where you land in the range depends on your degree level, location and the role.

PostingBase pay range (monthly)SF Bay Area and NYC
Software Engineer intern, CoreAI (summer 2027)$5,690 to $11,210$7,410 to $12,250
Software Engineer intern, Systems (2025 posting)$5,610 to $11,010$7,270 to $12,030

Benefits listed on Microsoft intern postings, which vary by country and type of employment, include healthcare, educational resources, product discounts, savings and investments, parental leave, time off, giving programs and networking. Some roles allow up to 50% work from home; others, such as the CoreAI role, are in the office. Postings in India and other countries do not publish pay, so ask the recruiter once you reach the offer stage.

Microsoft internship eligibility

  • You are enrolled full time in a bachelor’s or master’s program in computer science, engineering or a related field.
  • You have at least one semester or quarter left after the internship ends. Final-year students graduating before the summer should apply for new-graduate roles instead.
  • You have about one year of programming experience in an object-oriented language (C++, C#, Java or Python, for example).
  • You understand data structures and algorithms. Every software posting lists this.

For the Explore program, the extra rule is that you must be in the second year of a four-year bachelor’s degree when you apply, with an introductory computer science course and one semester of calculus done by the start date.

Work authorisation for international students

Microsoft postings do not state visa terms, and its equal-opportunity statement says it considers applicants regardless of citizenship and immigration status. What matters is whether you can legally work where the job is.

  • International students at US universities (F-1): summer internships are normally done on Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Your school’s Designated School Official authorises it in SEVIS after you have an offer; you cannot start before the authorisation date. Talk to your international office in the autumn, not in May.
  • Students outside the US: apply to Microsoft internships in the country where you study or have work rights. India posts its own software engineering internships; other offices post theirs on the same careers site.
  • Students studying abroad in a third country: check the student visa rules for vacation work there before you apply.

How to apply for a Microsoft internship

  1. Search Microsoft Careers: go to jobs.careers.microsoft.com, filter by “Internship” and the country you can work in. Postings titled “Intern Opportunities for University Students” are the main student roles.
  2. Pick one or two focus areas: apply where your projects fit (AI, systems, fullstack). Spraying applications across every posting rarely helps.
  3. Upload your CV: one page, PDF, with your graduation date and internship dates near the top.
  4. Complete the online technical screen: usually a timed coding assessment sent by email. Do it in a quiet place within the deadline.
  5. Interviews: if you pass, you are invited to interviews with engineers (see below).
  6. Offer and CPT or work permit: accept the offer, then arrange your work authorisation with your school or the relevant authority.

Microsoft internship interview process

Microsoft does not publish a fixed interview script. Its recruiters describe the stage after applications as “online technical screens and interviews”. Based on postings and applicant accounts, expect this:

  • Online assessment: coding problems on data structures and algorithms, timed, in a language of your choice.
  • Technical interviews: one or more interviews with engineers where you solve a problem while talking through your approach, then test and improve your code.
  • Behavioural questions: asked alongside the technical ones, about teamwork, learning from failure and handling ambiguity.
  • Explore program: applicants report a final round with one technical interview, one product interview and behavioural questions, with easier coding problems than the regular internship.

Prepare with arrays, strings, hash maps, trees, graphs and recursion, and practise explaining your thinking out loud. For the behavioural part, have three or four short stories ready from projects, hackathons or part-time jobs.

Writing your CV and cover letter for Microsoft

Most Microsoft postings ask only for a CV. Recruiters skim quickly, so put proof of coding ability where it is seen first.

  • List two or three projects with a link to the code and one line on what each does and how many people use it.
  • Name the language and tools for each project rather than a long skills cloud.
  • If you have done a hackathon, open-source contribution or teaching assistant role, include it with dates.
  • Add your expected graduation month and year, and the dates you can work.

If a posting allows a cover letter, open with one specific piece of work. A sample first line:

“This spring I trained a small image classifier on 4,000 labelled crop photos for my final-year project and cut its inference time in half by moving it to ONNX, which is the kind of work I would like to do on the CoreAI team.”

Use your own project and numbers. A line like this tells the reader in ten seconds what you can do.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mistaking Forage for an internship. It is good practice, but it is not a job offer and should not be described as one.
  • Applying in spring. The window runs to April, but most software roles fill in the autumn.
  • Applying with no term left. If you graduate before the internship, you do not meet the enrolment rule.
  • Skipping the online assessment deadline. Late submissions are usually not accepted.
  • Solving silently in interviews. Interviewers grade your reasoning as much as your final answer.
  • Leaving CPT to the last minute. You cannot start work until your school authorises it.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you are a computer science or engineering student with a year or more of coding, a couple of real projects, and the right to work in the US, India or another country with a Microsoft office. Second-year US students with less experience should look at Explore.

Look elsewhere if you are graduating before summer 2027, you need an employer to sponsor a visa from scratch, or you want a remote placement you can do from any country. A funded research programme such as Mitacs, or Google Summer of Code for open-source work, may suit you better.

Sources and updates

Pay ranges, eligibility, the September to April window and role details come from Microsoft’s own internship postings on Microsoft Careers: the summer 2027 Software Engineer CoreAI posting, the Software Engineer Systems posting and the India Software Engineering internship posting, read through job boards that republish them. The August 2026 posting date and the “online technical screens and interviews” stage come from Purdue University’s Computer Science department notice about Microsoft’s summer 2027 software internship. Explore program details come from a 2027 Explore guide by Extern that quotes Microsoft’s FAQ. Forage details come from theforage.com. CPT rules come from the US Student and Exchange Visitor Program’s CPT guidance. Compared with some listing sites, I have replaced the Forage simulation that was presented as a Microsoft internship, removed the “free verified certificate” and “one to six months, self-paced” claims, and added real pay and eligibility.
