Case Western Reserve University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Case Western Reserve University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Case Western Reserve admitted about 35% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 and offers international students limited need-based aid plus full-tuition scholarship competitions. Here are the 2026-27 costs, English minimums, scholarship rules and the 1 November 2026 and 15 January 2027 deadlines.

Case Western Reserve University admission requirements for international students are a Common App or Coalition application, your school transcript and School Report, a counselor recommendation, two teacher recommendations, the $75 fee and an English test unless you qualify for a waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Case Western Reserve (CWRU) admitted 13,890 of 39,332 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 35%, and it ties for No. 44 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition.

CWRU is one of the few top-50 American universities that gives international students both a little need-based aid and a real shot at full-tuition merit awards. Its financial aid office says it offers a limited amount of need-based aid to international first-years, and in 2025-26 it gave institutional aid averaging $43,200 to 275 nonresident undergraduates. The full-tuition scholarship competitions, such as the Andrew and Eleanor Squire Scholarship, are open to international students and close on 15 February 2027. For fall 2027 entry, Early Action and Early Decision I close on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 15 January 2027.

  6. Application fee: $75.
  7. Testing: SAT and ACT optional.

Case Western Reserve ranking

In the U.S. News 2027 edition, CWRU ties with Lehigh University at No. 44 among National Universities, a few places below Northeastern (No. 42) and above the University of Rochester (No. 49). Its reputation is strongest in engineering, the sciences, nursing and health-related fields, helped by its close ties to the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals next to campus.

CWRU acceptance rate and class profile

These numbers come from CWRU’s Common Data Set 2025-2026, which covers the class that started in fall 2025.

Measure (fall 2025 first-years)Figure
Applications39,332
Admitted13,890
Enrolled1,663
Acceptance rateabout 35%
Early Decision applications1,053
Early Decision admits263 (about 25%)
Average high school GPA3.78
SAT middle 50% (52% of enrollees submitted)1440 to 1530
ACT middle 50% (15% submitted)32 to 34

Two things stand out. First, more than half of enrolled students sent an SAT, and their middle range is high, so a strong score still helps even though testing is optional. Second, the ED admit rate was lower than the overall rate. CWRU admits many students through Early Action and Regular Decision, so you do not need to bind yourself early to have a fair chance. CWRU does not publish a separate international acceptance rate.

CWRU tuition for international students in 2026-27

International students pay the same tuition as US students. CWRU’s financial aid office lists these first-year, on-campus items for 2026-27:

Item (2026-27)Cost
Tuition$71,410
Fees$696
Matriculation fee (first year only)$760
Residential housing$11,688
Meal plan (unlimited)$8,600
Books and supplies$1,200
Personal expenses$1,350
Total of the items above$95,704
Transportationvaries
Extra nursing fees (nursing students only)$1,450

CWRU does not print a total on that page; $95,704 is our addition. Health insurance is not in the list and should be budgeted separately unless you have a plan that CWRU accepts.

Does Case Western give scholarships to international students?

Yes, through two routes. Read both carefully, because CWRU’s own pages make a clear split between what international students can and cannot receive.

Need-based aid

CWRU’s financial aid office says it offers a limited amount of need-based aid to first-year and transfer international applicants. You apply with the CSS Profile (CWRU code 1105). CWRU does not promise to meet full need for international students, and its pages do not say whether it is need-blind or need-aware for them, so assume that asking for aid can be a factor. The 2025-26 Common Data Set shows 275 nonresident undergraduates receiving institutional aid, at an average of $43,200 and nearly $11.9 million in total.

Merit scholarships

CWRU’s automatic merit awards, including the University Scholarship and the Michelson-Morley STEM Scholarship, are limited to US citizens and permanent residents. International students instead compete in the scholarship competitions, which need a separate application with extra information and an essay. CWRU says international students can compete unless a scholarship states otherwise.

The competition application is due by 15 February 2027, and your admission application must also be complete by its own deadline. Winners hear by 1 April 2027. Some awards, such as the Louis Stokes scholarship, are tied to US programmes in practice, so read each description before you spend time on it.

Testing and English requirements

CWRU is test-optional. If you submit, use SAT code 1105 or ACT code 3244. You can self-report scores in the applicant portal; enrolling students confirm them with official reports.

The English minimums for non-native speakers are:

TestCWRU minimum
Duolingo English Test115
IELTS7
PTE Academic61
TOEFL iBT (new 1 to 6 scale, including Home and Paper Editions)4.5
TOEFL iBT taken on or before 20 January 202690

The English requirement is waived automatically if you meet any one of these: two years at an English-medium school by graduation, an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 630 or more, or an ACT English score of 26 or more. Many students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other English-medium systems qualify through the first route, but confirm that your school’s language of instruction is clear on the School Report.

What goes into a CWRU application

  1. Common App or Coalition with Scoir: add CWRU to your list.
  2. Official high school transcript, with English translations where needed.
  3. School Report and counselor recommendation.
  4. Two teacher recommendations.
  5. Application fee: $75.
  6. Early Decision Agreement if you apply ED, signed by you, your counselor and a parent.
  7. Arts Supplement for music majors.
  8. CSS Profile if you want need-based aid.
  9. Scholarship competition application if you want merit money.
  10. Pre-Professional Scholars Program essays if you apply to that programme.

CWRU’s admissions page lists the dates without years; the years above are for the fall 2027 cycle. For the fall 2025 cycle, CWRU’s Common Data Set showed ED decisions on 5 December, Early Action decisions by 21 December and Regular Decision decisions by 19 March. Expect similar timing this year, and watch your portal for the exact dates.

Scholarship warning

International students are not considered for CWRU’s automatic merit awards. If you want merit money, you must submit the separate scholarship competition application, with its essay, by 15 February 2027.

How to write your CWRU essays

CWRU does not ask general applicants for a college-specific supplemental essay, according to a 2026-27 consultant summary, so your Common App personal statement carries more weight than at schools with several supplements. Pre-Professional Scholars applicants write two extra essays (on their interest in the profession and on an achievement not shown elsewhere), and scholarship competition applicants write a further essay.

For the scholarship essay, write about one thing you built, led or changed. Selectors for awards such as the A.W. Smith Innovation Scholarship look for proof that you finish projects and learn from failures. A sample opening, for illustration only: “The first solar dryer we built for my aunt’s tomato stall cooked the tomatoes instead of drying them. It took four more versions, a borrowed thermometer and a lot of wasted fruit before…”

Then explain the problem, your part in the work, the result in numbers if you have them, and what you would study at CWRU to take it further. Keep it to the word limit CWRU sets in the competition form.

What happens after you apply

  1. Applicant portal: check it for missing documents and to self-report scores.
  2. Scholarship application: complete it by 15 February 2027.
  3. Decisions: early December for ED I, late December for EA, and March for Regular Decision, based on last year’s timing.
  4. Aid: need-based offers and competition results arrive with or after admission; competition winners hear by 1 April 2027.
  5. Finalist interviews: Pre-Professional Scholars finalists interview in late March.
  6. Enrol and I-20: reply by 1 May 2027, submit proof of funds, receive your I-20 and book the F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Assuming you will be considered for merit automatically. Automatic awards are for US citizens and permanent residents only.
  • Missing the 15 February competition deadline because the admission application was sent in November.
  • Applying ED when Early Action is available and your family needs to compare aid offers.
  • Sending an old-scale TOEFL score taken after 20 January 2026 and expecting 90 to apply. New tests are judged on the 1 to 6 scale.
  • Not filing the CSS Profile because aid is “limited”. Limited is not zero.
  • Forgetting translations of transcripts and recommendations.

Costs that CWRU aid does not cover

A full-tuition award still leaves about $24,000 a year for fees, housing, meals, books and personal spending at 2026-27 rates. Also plan for:

  • Health insurance if you do not have a plan CWRU accepts.
  • Flights to Cleveland, the SEVIS fee and visa fees.
  • Warm clothing and boots for Lake Erie winters.
  • Housing during breaks.
  • The $760 matriculation fee in your first year.

Majors and strengths

CWRU is known for engineering (especially biomedical engineering), the natural sciences, nursing, and pre-health routes, and it has strong programmes in management, music (with the Cleveland Institute of Music nearby) and the social sciences. The Pre-Professional Scholars Program links undergraduate study with CWRU’s professional schools for students already set on careers such as medicine or dentistry. Students can combine majors across schools without much friction.

Campus and city

CWRU’s campus is in University Circle, Cleveland’s cultural district, beside the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall and major hospitals. That puts research placements, clinical shadowing and internships within walking distance. Cleveland is far cheaper than Boston for off-campus life, but the winters are long and snowy.

Graduate admissions at CWRU

Graduate and professional applicants apply to the school that runs the programme: the School of Graduate Studies for most MS and PhD programmes, the Weatherhead School of Management, the School of Law, the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, the School of Medicine, or the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Each publishes its own deadlines, English minimums and funding rules. PhD students are often funded through assistantships; the undergraduate scholarship competitions do not apply to graduate study.

Case Western Reserve compared with similar colleges

Northeastern UniversityNo. 42 (tied)No need-based aid; automatic merit scholarships1 November 2026 (ED I and EA)

Rochester is the closest match in feel and cost, and it considers international students for merit automatically. CWRU is easier to get into than Northeastern and more open to aid requests, but it asks international students to work for merit money through the competitions.

Who should apply to Case Western Reserve

Apply if you want engineering, the sciences, nursing or a pre-health route at a research university with hospitals on its doorstep, and if your family can pay a large share of the cost or you are a strong candidate for a competition scholarship. CWRU’s 35% admit rate also makes it a sensible target for strong students who are aiming at more selective schools.

Think twice if you need almost full funding. CWRU’s need-based aid for international students is limited, and competition awards are few. Pair it with need-blind or full-need colleges such as MIT, Amherst or Tufts, and see our list of American scholarships for international students.

Sources and updates

I checked these details on CWRU’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the undergraduate admission pages for international applicants and first-year applicants, the admission scholarships page, the financial aid page for international students, the 2026-27 estimated cost of attendance, and the Common Data Set 2025-2026. The U.S. News profile could not be opened, so the rank comes from published reports of the 2027 edition. The note on supplemental essays comes from a consultant’s 2026-27 summary and should be checked in the application. We update this guide when CWRU changes its dates, costs or aid rules.
