Rice University admission requirements for international students include a full secondary school transcript, three recommendations, Rice’s own short essays and “Rice Box” image, an International Student Financial Statement and, unless you studied in English for two years, an English score such as IELTS 7 or Duolingo 130. SAT and ACT scores are recommended but not required. Rice admitted 2,852 of 36,777 applicants to the Class of 2029, an acceptance rate of 7.8%.
For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, and both Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 4 January 2027. Tuition for 2026-27 is $71,140, and tuition, fees, room and board come to about $92,654. Rice meets the full demonstrated need of admitted students with grants and no loans, but international aid applicants are read on a need-aware basis. This guide covers the acceptance rate, Rice’s tuition for international students, scholarships, essays and deadlines.

Rice acceptance rate and class profile
Rice’s selectivity has stayed close to 8% for several years. The most recent full figures:

| Class of 2029 applicants | 36,777 | Rice, reported by the Rice Thresher |
| Class of 2029 admitted | 2,852 (7.8%) | Rice, reported by the Rice Thresher |
| ED I and QuestBridge admits, Class of 2029 | 491 (13.2% admit rate) | Rice Thresher |
| ED II admits, Class of 2029 | 158 (6% admit rate) | Rice Thresher |
| Fall 2024 applicants and admits | 32,473 applied, 2,597 admitted | Common Data Set 2024-25 |

| Middle 50% ACT, enrolled first-years | 34-36 | Common Data Set 2024-25 |
About 70% of enrolled first-years in the 2024-25 CDS sent test scores. Early Decision I has a clearly higher admit rate than ED II and Regular Decision, though ED applicants are often stronger and include QuestBridge finalists. Rice does not publish a separate admit rate for international applicants.
Rice University tuition for international students (2026-27)
International students pay the same price as Americans. Rice set these undergraduate charges for 2026-27:
| Item | 2026-27 amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition (first to third year students) | $71,140 |
| Tuition (students beyond third year) | $65,280 |
| Mandatory fees | $984 |
| Room and board | $20,530 |
| Tuition, fees, room and board (first-year student) | $92,654 |
| Books, personal costs, health insurance, travel | Not in Rice’s tuition announcement; budget separately |
Tuition rose by $4,600 from 2025-26. When you add books, personal spending, health insurance and flights, a self-funding family should plan for well over $95,000 a year. Use Rice’s net price calculator for an estimate of your own aid.
Rice scholarships and financial aid for international students
Need-based aid
- Need-aware admission. International students who ask for aid are considered on a need-aware basis, and need-based aid for internationals is decided case by case. Rice’s need-blind promise applies to US citizens and permanent residents.
- Full need, no loans. Rice says it meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students, and its aid is loan-free. In fall 2025, 54% of Rice undergraduates received aid and the average first-year aid offer was $71,698.
- First year only. If you say on your application that you need aid, you must apply through the Office of Financial Aid. Students who get no need-based aid in their first year cannot apply for it in later years.
- Renew each year. Aid recipients refile the CSS Profile every year. Need-based aid normally lasts eight semesters.
Rice has expanded its Rice Investment programme for fall 2027: families earning under $100,000 get tuition, fees, room and board covered, and families earning $100,000 to $200,000 get free tuition. Rice has not said that these income bands apply to international students, so do not count on them when you budget.
Merit scholarships
Rice gives merit scholarships through the Office of Admission. Admitted students are considered automatically, and Rice does not list amounts or international-specific criteria. Merit awards cover Rice coursework only and can be traded for named scholarships. Plan your finances without counting on a merit award.
Forms and documents for aid
- Mark that you need aid: answer the financial aid question on your application honestly.
- International Student Financial Statement: every international applicant submits it with supporting documents, aid applicant or not. Your application is incomplete without it.
- CSS Profile: file it with Rice’s code 6609.
- Supporting documents: upload your parents’ income records, translated into English where needed.
- Meet the aid deadline: Rice’s catalogue lists 15 November for ED I, 5 January for ED II and 1 February for Regular Decision. Confirm the date shown in your applicant portal.

Testing and English requirements
SAT or ACT scores are recommended if you have them, but applicants without scores get full consideration. With a middle 50% SAT of 1510-1560, I would send a score at or above that range and think hard before sending one far below it.
If English is not your first language, you either complete at least two years of full-time study in an English-language curriculum before applying, or you send one of these scores:
| Test | Rice minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (exams on or after 21 January 2026) | 5.0 overall |
| TOEFL iBT (earlier exams) | 100 |
| IELTS Academic | 7 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 185 |
Scores must come directly from the testing organisation. Rice’s TOEFL code is 6609, and TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted. Many applicants from English-medium schools in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or India will meet the two-year rule. Ask your counselor to confirm the language of instruction in the school report.

Rice supplemental essays for 2026-27
Rice’s 2026-27 supplement, as published on the Common App, asks for:
- Academic interest, 150 words: what draws you to the academic areas you selected and how you hope to explore them at Rice.
- Why Rice, 150 words: which parts of the Rice experience appeal to you, based on your research.
- One long essay, 500 words: either what life experiences or perspectives you would share in the residential college system, or how your background and identity inspire you to join Rice’s community.
- The Rice Box: one two-dimensional image with no caption. Rice says it is not used in evaluation.
How to write them
The two 150-word answers are where most international applicants waste space. Name courses, research centres or programmes you found yourself, and connect each to something you have already done. “Rice has great engineering” tells the reader nothing.
For the 500-word essay, the residential college option suits applicants with a clear story about living or working closely with people. Rice students eat, live and run student government inside their college for four years, so show you can share space and contribute to it. Pick one or two scenes and stay in them.
Sample opening (for illustration only): “Every December our compound in Ibadan hosts six families, two generators and one kitchen. I became the person who wrote the cooking rota, settled the arguments over it, and learned that fairness needs a spreadsheet and a sense of humour.”

Do not skip this form
The International Student Financial Statement is required from every international applicant, including students not asking for aid. Without it Rice treats your application as incomplete.
Majors and academic strengths
Rice has about 50 undergraduate majors across engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, architecture, music and business. Its engineering school and bioscience programmes benefit from Houston’s Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, which sits beside campus. The Shepherd School of Music and the School of Architecture are both well regarded and selective. Classes are small, and research by undergraduates is common.
Campus and city life
Rice’s wooded campus is in central Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. Each student is assigned to one of 11 residential colleges before arriving and stays in it for all four years, which gives international students a ready-made community. Houston is hot and humid for much of the year and has large African, Asian and Latin American communities, plus a big international airport with direct flights to many regions.
Graduate admissions in brief
Graduate applicants apply to individual programmes, not to Rice as a whole. Each department sets its own deadline, test policy and English minimums. PhD students are usually funded through the programme, while master’s degrees such as those at the Jones Graduate School of Business generally charge tuition and offer partial scholarships. Check each programme’s page before you apply.
What happens after you apply
- Portal access: Rice sends a link to its applicant portal. Upload missing items and the Rice Box there if you did not use the Common App.
- Interview: if offered, take it. It is recommended but not guaranteed.
- Decision: mid-December for ED I, mid-February for ED II, spring for Regular Decision.
- Aid offer: admitted aid applicants receive an offer based on the CSS Profile and documents.
- Enrol and I-20: Rice uses your financial statement to issue the I-20. You then pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Forgetting the International Student Financial Statement because you are not asking for aid.
- Sending a TOEFL score on the old scale without checking the new 5.0 rule for recent tests.
- Writing a “why Rice” answer that never mentions the residential colleges or a specific programme.
- Taking ED II without comparing aid offers; it is binding.
- Not applying for aid in year one, which shuts you out of need-based aid for good.
- Applying to Architecture or Music without starting the portfolio or audition early.
Costs the aid package may not cover
- Application costs: English tests, CSS Profile fees and sending official scores
- F-1 visa application and SEVIS fees
- Flights and any travel Rice’s budget does not include
- Exchange-rate losses if your family pays part of the cost in local currency
- Summer living costs if you stay in Houston

Need-blind colleges such as Amherst and MIT are worth adding if you need a large aid package.
Who should apply
Rice suits students who want a top research university with a small-college feel, especially in engineering, the life sciences, architecture or music. If you like living in a close community and want a big city nearby, the residential college system is a real advantage.
If you need full aid, keep in mind that Rice funds only a limited number of international students and reads aid requests with your file. Apply, but balance your list with need-blind schools and universities that offer merit scholarships to international students.
