Virginia Tech Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Virginia Tech Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Virginia Tech asks international applicants for a Common App, four 120-word Ut Prosim answers and an English score, with no letters and optional SAT. Here are the about-55% admit rate, $55,212 cost for 2026-27, scholarships and the 15 November 2026 deadline.

Virginia Tech admission requirements for international students come down to six things: a Common App, a $70 fee, four required Ut Prosim short answers of up to 120 words each, your secondary school record (through STARS or uploaded transcripts), an English proficiency result unless you are exempt, and no recommendation letters at all. The SAT and ACT are optional. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Action deadline is 15 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027.

Virginia Tech admitted about 55% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 and is ranked No. 52 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. Money is the harder part: out-of-state tuition, fees, room and board come to $55,212 for 2026-27, international students cannot receive federal or state aid, and the only university money open to you is competitive college and departmental scholarships. Every figure here was checked on Virginia Tech’s pages on 29 October 2026.

Virginia Tech ranking

In the U.S. News Best Colleges 2027 edition, released in September 2026, Virginia Tech is tied at No. 52 among National Universities and tied at No. 19 among Top Public Schools, alongside William & Mary and the University of Georgia, as reported by Virginia Business. In the previous edition, local coverage described it as a top-25 public university.

Rankings will not decide your application, but they explain the size of the pool. Virginia Tech’s first-year applications have set a record for five years running, and the university expected its largest ever freshman class, about 7,521 students, in fall 2026.

Virginia Tech shares its Common Data Set on request rather than posting it, so the fall 2025 figures above come from a published transcription of the 2025-26 file; Virginia Tech News separately reported that applications for fall 2025 approached 58,000. Virginia Tech does not publish an admit rate for international applicants. Its admissions office says most admitted students have more than the minimum coursework and at least a B+ average.

Virginia Tech tuition for international students (2026-27)

International undergraduates pay the out-of-state rate. Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors set these 2026-27 charges in April 2026, a 2.9% tuition rise:

Charge (2026-27, undergraduate)In-stateOut-of-state and international
Tuition and mandatory fees$17,087$40,180
Room and board$15,032$15,032
Total on-campus cost$32,116$55,212

For your I-20, the Cranwell International Center uses a fuller budget that adds personal and other costs. Its current undergraduate estimate is $67,372: tuition and fees of $38,914, room and board of $17,442 and $11,016 in miscellaneous expenses. Those tuition and housing lines are lower than the new 2026-27 charges above, so expect the I-20 figure to rise and plan for at least $68,000 to $70,000 a year. Some colleges add a major-specific charge, from $750 in Agriculture and Life Sciences to $2,550 in the Pamplin College of Business.

Your proof of funds must cover one year, be in liquid form, and be no more than six months old when you submit it.

Virginia Tech scholarships for international students

Virginia Tech has no need-based aid for international undergraduates. Federal aid needs a FAFSA, which requires US citizenship or eligible noncitizen status, and Virginia state aid needs Virginia domicile. That leaves three routes:

  • College and departmental scholarships: Virginia Tech’s financial aid office says international students can apply for these whether or not they can file a FAFSA. After you apply for admission, you reach Scholarship Central through your admissions portal.
  • The General Scholarship application: due by 22 January 2027 for fall 2027 applicants in both rounds. Virginia Tech does not publish award amounts for international students.
  • Outside funding and private loans: the aid office points international students to outside scholarship lists (EducationUSA, College Board and others) and to private loans through ELMSelect filtered for international borrowers.

There is no CSS Profile or ISFAA for Virginia Tech. Since aid for international students is limited and competitive, I would treat any scholarship as a bonus and only enrol if your family or sponsor can cover the full cost. For universities with larger awards, see our list of the best American scholarships for international students.

Virginia Tech admission requirements for international students: the checklist

  1. Common App: it opens in early August. International deadlines are the same as for US applicants.
  2. Application fee: $70, non-refundable, paid by Mastercard, Visa or Discover. Virginia Tech will not process your application without it.
  3. Ut Prosim short answers: four required questions, up to 120 words each. They are final once you submit.
  4. Major: choose a specific major or an undecided option from more than 150 majors and options.
  5. Academic record: either a STARS self-reported record (encouraged, as it speeds processing) or uploaded transcripts, marksheets and exam results for years 9 to 11 plus your current courses or predicted results. Graduates add their school leaving certificate and final transcripts for years 9 to 12.
  6. English proficiency: unless exempt (see below).
  7. SAT or ACT: optional. If you send scores, use SAT code 5859 or ACT code 4420.

Virginia Tech says recommendation letters are not part of its application. If you have special circumstances, a counsellor can email a letter of circumstance to admissions, or you can use the Common App’s additional information section. Minimum coursework is three units of maths including Algebra I and II, two units of lab science from biology, chemistry or physics, and further academic units, with a foreign language highly recommended. Some majors ask for an extra year of advanced maths or lab science.

Testing policy

Virginia Tech is test-optional and says it has no preference on whether you submit scores. You can change your choice up to your decision plan deadline. For international applicants the SAT or ACT is optional too, although an SAT Reading and Writing score of 550 or an ACT English score of 24 also meets the English requirement.

English requirements

Test or qualificationVirginia Tech minimum
TOEFL iBT (older 120-point scale)80, no section below 16
TOEFL iBT (1 to 6 scale, from 21 January 2026)4.5, no section below 4.0
IELTS6.5, no band below 6.5
PTE59
Duolingo English Test115
Cambridge English176
SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing550
ACT English24
IGCSE, GCSE or GCE EnglishA, B or C (or 6 to 9)
IB English A (Language and Literature)5

Scores must be less than two years old and sent directly by the test agency with code 5859. You are exempt if you completed four years of secondary school (grades 9 to 12 or equivalent) in a listed country, taught only in English and with no ESL classes. The list includes the US, UK, Ireland, Canada (except Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, several Caribbean countries, and Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The IELTS rule is strict: one band of 6.0 fails it even with a 7.0 overall. If you meet everything except English, Virginia Tech suggests its Language and Culture Institute.

Early Action is non-binding, and there is no Early Decision round in the 2026-27 cycle. One older FAQ page still gives 1 November for Early Action, but the official 2026-27 dates page and the international admissions page both say 15 November, so use that date. Regular Decision is “space available,” which makes Early Action the better choice if you are ready.

Early Action closes 15 November 2026

Your English score and academic record can follow until 1 December, but the application, the $70 fee and all four Ut Prosim answers must be in by 15 November.

How to answer the Ut Prosim questions, with a sample opening

Ut Prosim, “That I May Serve,” is Virginia Tech’s motto, and the four 2026-27 questions follow from it. With no letters and no interview, these 480 words are most of what the reader learns about you.

Question theme (120 words each)What a strong answer shows
How you contribute to a community that matters to youHow long you have been involved, one thing you learned, and how you would bring it to Virginia Tech
A time you or someone you know was not includedWhat you did or did not do, and how your view changed
A time you were proud of yourself as a leader or role modelThe skill you brought and what others relied on you for
A goal you have set and your steps to reach itWhat motivated it, your timeline, and who guides you

At 120 words you have room for one example and one reflection. Open with what you did; a definition of community or leadership wastes words. Use different examples in each answer, so the four together show four sides of you. Specific numbers help: how many children you tutored, for how many months, what changed.

A sample opening for the community question, for illustration only: “For three years I have run the Saturday maths clinic at my church, which began with four primary pupils around one table and now fills the hall.” The rest of the answer would name one thing you learned, such as how to explain fractions without the textbook, and say how you would use it in a tutoring programme at Virginia Tech.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: Virginia Tech emails you a link to your applicant portal. Upload records and track missing items there.
  2. Scholarship Central: through the portal, complete the General Scholarship application by 22 January 2027.
  3. Decision: late February for Early Action, mid-March for Regular Decision.
  4. Accept by 1 May 2027: first-years must live on campus, so you will also apply for housing.
  5. I-20 request: complete the New International Student Intake Form in the IntlHokies portal with your passport page and proof of funds. Processing takes five to seven business days, and the I-20 arrives as a password-protected PDF to your Virginia Tech email.
  6. Visa and final documents: book your F-1 interview, then send final official transcripts by 15 July 2027.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Using the old 1 November date or missing 15 November: the 2026-27 Early Action deadline is 15 November.
  • Ignoring IELTS sub-scores: every band must be 6.5 or higher.
  • Assuming you are exempt: the exemption needs four full years of English-only schooling in a listed country, with no ESL courses.
  • Sending recommendation letters: Virginia Tech does not use them.
  • Skipping the General Scholarship application: it is the only route to university scholarships for most international students.
  • Reusing one story four times: each Ut Prosim answer should use a different example.

Costs aid will not cover

  • Health insurance: F-1 students must hold adequate cover; Virginia Tech encourages its Aetna student plan, or you file a waiver for an equivalent policy.
  • Major-specific charges: $750 to $2,550 a year depending on your college.
  • Housing after first year: campus housing is not guaranteed, and off-campus leases usually run twelve months.
  • Work limits: on-campus jobs for F-1 students are described by Virginia Tech as extremely limited, so do not count on earning your living costs.
  • Visa, travel and bank charges: fees are payable in US dollars on a US bank or a foreign bank with a US correspondent.

Majors, campus and town

Virginia Tech is Virginia’s land-grant university, with its main campus in Blacksburg, a college town in the southwest of the state. It offers more than 150 majors and options across colleges including engineering, agriculture and life sciences, architecture and design, science, liberal arts and the Pamplin College of Business. Some majors ask for more maths or lab science than the university minimum, so check your intended major before you apply.

All first-year students must live on campus unless they are over 21. Blacksburg is small and quieter than the big-city campuses of Seattle or Minneapolis, which keeps living costs moderate but means fewer part-time jobs off campus, and F-1 students need authorisation for off-campus work anyway.

Virginia Tech graduate admissions for international students

  • Fee: $75, non-refundable; the Graduate School lists fee waiver options.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 4.5 with at least 4.5 in each section (90, with 20 per section, for tests before 21 January 2026) or IELTS 6.5. A bachelor’s degree from an English-medium university can waive this.
  • Teaching assistants: a TOEFL Speaking score of 5 is expected.
  • Campus: F-1 and J-1 students can enrol only at Blacksburg or the National Capital Region campus.
  • Funding: departments award assistantships, and admitted students have until 15 April to accept one.

If a scholarship decides whether you can go, Minnesota and Texas A&M publish more for international students than Virginia Tech does. Our page on US scholarships with upcoming deadlines lists other options.

Who should apply to Virginia Tech

Apply if you want engineering, architecture, agriculture or business at a large public university in a small college town, your grades are around B+ or better, and your family can cover close to $70,000 a year. Students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other listed countries who did all four secondary years in English can skip the English test, and the application costs only $70 with no letters to arrange.

It is a poor fit if you need need-based aid or a guaranteed merit award, or if you want a big city. I would apply Early Action by 15 November, file the General Scholarship application in January, and keep a funded option on your list.
