The KU MBA is the 16-month full-time MBA at the University of Kansas School of Business in Lawrence, Kansas. U.S. News ranks it No. 51 in its 2026 Best Business Schools list, tied with UC Irvine’s Merage, and KU puts the average GMAT of its admitted students at 600. Poets&Quants reported a 65.4% acceptance rate for the class that entered in 2025, the highest admit rate among the schools ranked around it, and 95% of graduates have a job within three months.
The programme starts in the fall only. Your Deadline is 1 February 2027, KU’s priority date for scholarship consideration, and international applications close in May 2027. This guide covers the Kansas MBA requirements, acceptance rate, the GMAT waiver, English scores, tuition for nonresidents, scholarships, salaries and the mistakes international applicants make.

Kansas MBA ranking
U.S. News placed the KU full-time MBA No. 51 in its 2026 edition, released on 7 April 2026. KU’s own programme page describes the same result as 25th among public universities. The Poets&Quants composite ranking puts KU at No. 82, a reminder that ranking methods disagree a lot at this level.
The KU School of Business is accredited by AACSB, the main global accreditor for business schools.
Kansas MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Poets&Quants’ August 2026 data gives a 65.4% acceptance rate for the 2025 entering class, down from 71.4% in 2024 and 76.8% in 2023. Yield was 91.2%, which means almost everyone admitted chose to enrol. For a strong applicant, admission here is realistic; the competitive part is the scholarship.
| KU full-time MBA admitted student averages | Figure |
|---|---|
| GMAT | 600 |
| GPA | 3.3 |
| Work experience | 2 years |
| Class size | Not published |
| International share | Not published |
KU’s October 2025 news article describes a “typical” profile as a GMAT of 585 or more and a GPA of 3.0. KU says the programme is built for students without a business background and welcomes graduates of music, art, science and engineering. You do not need prerequisite courses.
Kansas MBA requirements for international students
- Application: through BusinessCAS, choosing “Master of Business Administration – MBA”.
- Personal statement: uploaded in the application. KU does not publish a prompt or word limit.
- Resume: current.
- Transcripts: upload copies with the application; official transcripts go to KU Graduate Admissions by email (gradadmin@ku.edu) or post.
- Two recommendations: you enter your recommenders’ emails and KU sends them a form.
- GMAT: required unless you get a waiver (below). GMAT school code 6871.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS Academic or PTE, unless you are exempt.
- Fees: paid when you submit; the amount is shown in BusinessCAS. KU says it does not offer application fee waivers.
The Kansas GMAT waiver
KU will consider a waiver if all three of these apply: your degree is in business, engineering, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physical science, economics or a similar quantitative field; your overall GPA is 3.0 or higher; and you earned a B or better in every quantitative course. You request it under “Program Questions” in BusinessCAS and can wait for the decision before paying. Decisions are final.
There is a catch that matters for international students. KU’s FAQ says every MBA scholarship requires the GMAT, and its news article says applicants with GMAT or GRE scores are considered automatically. A waiver can get you in, but it can also cost you the money. I would take the test.
English requirements
| Test | Full proficiency (regular admission) |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT, tests before 21 January 2026 | 80, no part below 20 |
| TOEFL iBT, new scale from 21 January 2026 | 4.5, no part below 4.5 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5, no part below 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 60, no part below 55 |
| Duolingo | Not listed |
Scores must be under two years old when KU processes your file. KU does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores, IELTS One Skill Retake or unofficial scores. A lower band (for example IELTS 5.5) can lead to admission with Applied English Center classes, but the FAQ says the full-time MBA does not offer conditional admission, so aim for full proficiency.
You are exempt if your bachelor’s degree is from a foreign university where all instruction is in English and the degree requirements are similar to a U.S. degree. KU decides this from your transcript and may ask for a medium-of-instruction letter. It does not publish a country list, so a graduate of a Nigerian, Ghanaian or Kenyan university should request that letter early.
Kansas MBA deadlines 2026-2027
| Date | What it is for |
|---|---|
| 1 February 2027 | Priority deadline for scholarship consideration |
| 1 April 2027 | Priority consideration for the Patterson Fellowship (apply page) |
| 1 May 2027 | International deadline (programme page and FAQ) |
| 15 May 2027 | International deadline (apply page) |
| 1 August 2027 | Domestic deadline (apply page) |
KU’s pages disagree on the international deadline. Treat 1 May 2027 as your real cut-off, and aim for 1 February so you are in the main scholarship pool and have time for the I-20 and visa. KU reviews complete files every two weeks from January to June, and a decision usually takes about two weeks. An offer stays valid for one year after the admitted term.
How to apply, step by step
- Book the GMAT: or check whether you meet all three waiver conditions.
- Book TOEFL, IELTS or PTE: or request a medium-of-instruction letter from your university.
- Open BusinessCAS: and select the full-time MBA programme.
- Ask two recommenders: a supervisor is the best choice.
- Write the personal statement: and update your resume.
- Submit by 1 February 2027: and send official transcripts and test scores to KU.
- Prepare for a Patterson interview: in April if you are shortlisted.
How to write the Kansas MBA personal statement
KU does not publish a prompt or word limit, so write a focused statement of about 500 to 750 words unless the application shows a limit. Cover four things in order: what you do now and one result you achieved; the role you want after the MBA; the gap between the two that an MBA fills; and why KU in particular. For the last part, name something real: the Kansas Small Business Projects consulting capstone, a concentration in business analytics or supply chain, or the 16-month length.
For illustration: “For three years I have run inventory planning for a beverage distributor in Accra, where one bad forecast can leave 40 trucks idle. I want to move into supply chain analytics for a U.S. manufacturer, and KU’s operations concentration and its small business consulting projects are the shortest route there.”
The Kansas MBA interview
KU’s admissions pages do not describe a general interview for the full-time MBA. Candidates for the Patterson Fellowship are interviewed, in April according to KU’s news article. Prepare for that as you would for a job interview: your story, your goal and what you will add to a small cohort.
What the admissions committee looks for
- A GMAT near or above 600, or a quantitative degree with a 3.0 GPA if you seek the waiver.
- Two or more years of work experience, which KU prefers but does not require.
- A clear career goal that a 16-month general MBA can deliver.
- Openness to working in teams on consulting projects with local businesses.
- Good English, since there is no conditional admission.
Kansas MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027
International students pay the out-of-state rate. KU’s 2026-27 graduate rate for nonresidents is $1,176.10 per credit hour. At 49 credits, base tuition comes to about $57,630 for the whole programme. That figure leaves out business course fees, which KU says may apply and which its cost page does not include. KU’s FAQ says tuition usually changes each July.
| KU graduate cost estimate, Lawrence, 2026-27 (18 credit hours) | Nonresident |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $21,170 |
| Required student fee and wellness fee | $1,065 |
| Loan fee | $154 |
| Housing and meals | $14,750 |
| Books and supplies | $450 |
| Transportation | $3,098 |
| Personal expenses | $4,428 |
| Total | $45,115 |
KU’s budget assumes 18 credits over the academic year. The MBA’s 49 credits over three semesters means a higher tuition line, so recalculate with the per-credit rate.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Business course fees, which are charged on top of tuition.
- Health insurance; KU’s cost estimate does not list it, so check KU’s international student office for the 2026-27 amount.
- The summer internship period, when you may need to fund a move to another city.
- Visa fees (SEVIS I-901 and the visa application fee) and flights.
- GMAT, English test and score-sending fees.
- A car. Lawrence is a small city, and many internship employers are in Kansas City.
Kansas MBA scholarships for international students
KU’s news article says full-time MBA scholarships range from $3,000 to $36,000, spread evenly across semesters. There is no separate form: admitted students with GMAT or GRE scores are considered automatically, and the priority deadline is 1 February. On top of that, the Patterson Fellows Program adds $8,000 for academically strong incoming MBA and MS Business Analytics students, with interviews in April.
KU does not say on these pages that international students are excluded, and it does not list Prodigy, MPOWER or other loans for international students without a U.S. cosigner. For more funding ideas, see our guide to the best American scholarships for international students, and our recommendation letter samples if your recommender wants a model.
STEM designation and OPT
KU’s full-time MBA pages do not say the programme is STEM-designated. Without that, international graduates get the standard 12 months of OPT, not the 24-month STEM extension. Ask the admissions office directly before you apply; if STEM OPT is essential to your plan, the dual MBA and MS in Business Analytics (about two years) may be worth asking about.
Kansas MBA salary and employment
| Outcome | Figure |
|---|---|
| Employed within three months of graduation | 95% |
| Median or average base salary | Not published |
| Recent employers | Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Huhtamaki, T-Mobile, EY, Lockton |
| Industries | Not published |
KU’s career services statistics page reports undergraduate and accounting outcomes but no MBA salary data. That is a real gap, and I would ask admissions for the latest full-time MBA salary figures before you commit.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying without a GMAT and then expecting money: all MBA scholarships require the GMAT.
- Trusting the 15 May date: two KU pages say 1 May for international students.
- Missing 1 February: the scholarship priority date.
- Sending MyBest or unofficial scores: KU rejects them.
- Assuming English-speaking nationality is enough: exemption depends on your degree’s language of instruction.
- Budgeting from the 18-credit cost sheet: the MBA has 49 credits.
- Expecting STEM OPT: KU does not state a STEM designation.
Who should apply to KU, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you want a shorter, lower-cost MBA from a ranked public university, especially if you have little business background, a GMAT around 600, and interest in finance, marketing, analytics or supply chain jobs in the Midwest. The high admit rate and large scholarships make KU a strong safety or value choice.
Think twice if you need the 24-month STEM OPT extension, want detailed salary data before you commit, or need a large international community around you.
Kansas vs peer MBA programmes
| School | U.S. News 2026 | Avg GMAT | Tuition 2026-27 | International share | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kansas | No. 51 | 600 | $1,176.10 per credit (nonresident) | Not published | 1 February 2027 (scholarship priority) |
| UCI Merage | No. 51 | Not published | About $61,850 a year core charges (nonresident) | About one-third | 15 January 2027 |
| Tulane Freeman | No. 53 | Not published by Freeman | $1,989 per credit | Not published by Freeman | 1 November 2026 |
| Boston College Carroll | No. 53 | 650 (GMAT 10th edition, Class of 2028) | $70,390 a year | 18% | 15 December 2026 |
KU is the cheapest of these and the easiest to get into, and it is the only one that does not state a STEM designation. Merage shares its rank but admits only about a quarter of applicants.
