Oberlin College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Oberlin College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Oberlin admitted about 8% of international applicants for fall 2026, aims to meet full need, and offers merit scholarships of up to $10,000 for African and Japanese students. Here are the requirements, 2026-27 costs, aid forms and fall 2027 deadlines.

Oberlin College admission requirements for international students are lighter than at most selective US colleges: one Common App or Scoir application with your personal essay, a school report and transcript, one teacher recommendation, national exam results, and a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score if English is not your first language or your school’s language. There is no Oberlin supplemental essay, no application fee, and the SAT and ACT are optional.

The hard part is aid. Oberlin’s College of Arts and Sciences admitted about 34.5% of all first-year applicants for fall 2026, but Oberlin says only about 8% of international applicants were admitted that year, and asking for aid puts you in its most competitive pool. It aims to meet 100% of calculated need for international students it admits, and it offers merit scholarships of up to $10,000 a year for African and Japanese applicants. For fall 2027 entry, Early Action and Early Decision I close on 1 November 2026, Early Decision II on 5 January 2027 and Regular Decision on 15 January 2027. I checked these figures on Oberlin’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Oberlin College ranking

Oberlin is ranked by U.S. News among National Liberal Arts Colleges. I could not confirm its position in the 2027 edition, published in September 2026, from a source I could load, so check the U.S. News page for the current number. Oberlin’s own identity is unusual: it is a liberal arts college and a professional music conservatory on one campus, and 51 first-year students in fall 2026 enrolled in both through the double degree programme.

Oberlin acceptance rate and fall 2026 class profile

Oberlin reports its two divisions separately. These are the figures for students who entered in fall 2026 (the Class of 2030). I worked out the rates from Oberlin’s applicant and admit numbers.

Measure (fall 2026)College of Arts and SciencesConservatory of Music

SAT Math (middle 50%, admitted)690 to 770Not published
ACT (middle 50%, admitted)31 to 35Not published
  • International students in the new class: 7%, with 45 countries represented.
  • Admission rate for international applicants: roughly 8 to 10% in a typical year, and about 8% for fall 2026, according to Oberlin’s international aid page.
  • Early Decision: 231 enrolling Arts and Sciences students (35%) came through ED.
  • Test scores: 61% of students reported them; Oberlin has been test-optional since 2020.
  • Grades: median GPA of 4.0 weighted and 3.67 unweighted.

That 8% figure is the number to plan around. A 34.5% overall rate makes Oberlin look like a match, but for an international student who needs aid it is as selective as many top-20 colleges.

Oberlin tuition for international students (2026-27)

International students pay the same charges as US students. Oberlin’s 2026-27 figures are below.

Cost item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition$70,320
Housing$10,270
Dining (meal plan)$10,430
Fees (includes a waivable $50 Green Fee)$1,142
Oberlin’s billed total$92,162
Books (estimate)$930
Personal expenses (estimate)$978
Student health insurance (can be waived with other cover)$3,028
TravelVaries
My total before travel$97,098

Oberlin’s $92,162 total covers tuition, housing, meals and fees only. The last row adds books, personal costs and insurance; flights to and from home come on top, and from Lagos, Nairobi or Dhaka to Cleveland they are not cheap.

Oberlin scholarships for international students

Unlike most colleges in our comparison table below, Oberlin pairs need-based aid with merit awards open to international students. There is no separate scholarship application: the Admissions Office reviews every admitted student.

ScholarshipAmountWho is eligible
Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane ScholarshipUp to $10,000Citizens of sub-Saharan African countries admitted to Arts and Sciences
Yakubu Saaka Memorial Fund$10,000, for four yearsCitizens of African countries admitted to Arts and Sciences
Edwin O. Reischauer ScholarshipUp to $10,000Japanese nationals admitted to Arts and Sciences
Oberlin Commitment Scholarship$10,000 a year, renewableDomestic, international and transfer students in either division
John F. Oberlin ScholarshipNot statedArts and Sciences students, for academic achievement
Conservatory Dean’s AwardNot statedAdmitted Conservatory students, based on audition and ensemble needs

Merit awards renew for eight semesters (ten for double degree students) as long as you stay full time. They do not move between divisions. The Midwest Merit Scholarship of $25,000 a year is for students from Ohio and 11 Midwestern states only, so international applicants cannot receive it.

How need-based aid works for international students at Oberlin

  • Need-aware: applying for aid places you in Oberlin’s most competitive pool.
  • Full need: Oberlin aims to meet 100% of calculated need for international students it admits with aid.
  • Typical award: about half of international students recently received Oberlin aid, averaging about two-thirds of the cost of attendance.
  • The $35,000 line: Oberlin says applicants whose families can contribute at least $35,000 a year are the most competitive.
  • Fixed contribution: you pay the same out-of-pocket amount each year. Aid is not raised for changed circumstances or exchange rate falls.
  • Loans: Oberlin occasionally offers limited direct loans to international students. Private lenders usually want a US co-signer.
  • Apply now or never: if you do not apply for aid before your admission decision, you are not eligible for need-based aid for your whole time at Oberlin.

For a family whose currency is weak against the dollar, the no-adjustment rule matters. If the naira, cedi or shilling falls in your second year, your contribution in dollars stays the same and costs more at home. Plan for that before you accept.

How to apply for Oberlin financial aid as an international student

  1. Request aid on your application: tick the aid question on the Common App or Scoir.
  2. CSS Profile: use Oberlin’s code 1587. Canadians must use the CSS Profile.
  3. ISAFA instead, if needed: if you cannot submit the CSS Profile or its fee is a burden, upload the International Student Application for Financial Assistance with supporting papers such as tax returns or bank statements.
  4. Parent income documents: upload originals plus English translations (tax returns, employer salary letters) through the secure portal. Do not email them.
  5. Skip the FAFSA: international students are not eligible for US federal aid.

Aid forms are due on your admission deadline. If you meet it, your aid package arrives with your admission decision.

Conservatory applicants follow a separate process that includes an audition, and musical ability counts for more than academics. Double degree applicants complete both.

Testing policy

Oberlin has been test-optional since 2020. You can self-report SAT or ACT scores and send official reports only if you enrol. Among admitted Arts and Sciences students who reported scores, the middle range was 710 to 760 in SAT Reading and Writing and 690 to 770 in Math. I would only send a score that sits inside or above those ranges.

English requirements

You need an English test if English is not your first language or your school does not teach mainly in English. Oberlin Arts and Sciences accepts the TOEFL iBT (including the Home Edition), IELTS and the Duolingo English Test, sent officially. It does not publish a minimum score for Arts and Sciences, and it offers no test fee waivers; if you truly cannot afford a test, Oberlin will review your application without one.

The Conservatory gives more detail. It says there is no absolute minimum, but TOEFL iBT scores of 3 or lower on the new scale (80 before January 2026) make applicants less likely to be competitive, and it prefers TOEFL or IELTS, accepting Duolingo only where neither is available. Conservatory applicants scoring below 3 may get an extra English assessment at the audition.

Aid warning

Apply for aid before you receive your admission decision. If you do not, Oberlin will not give you need-based aid in any year.

How to write your Oberlin application essay

Oberlin has no supplemental essays, so your Common App personal essay is the only writing it reads from you. That raises the stakes on one piece of writing.

  1. Pick a story with a turn in it: something you believed, did or made, and what changed.
  2. Show a mind at work: Oberlin readers respond to curiosity and independent projects. Describe one thing you dug into on your own.
  3. Use the optional extras: with no supplement, an arts portfolio, a research paper or a second recommendation is how you add depth.
  4. Add your voice: an InitialView or Vericant interview lets readers hear you, which helps when you have only one essay.

A sample opening, for illustration only: “For two years I recorded every bird that landed on the mango tree outside my classroom window in Kisumu. I started because I was bored in chemistry. I kept going because by the second year I could predict, within a week, when the weavers would start building, and nobody had written that down before.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal: your aid forms and checklist appear in the applicant portal after you submit.
  2. Documents: upload income papers and translations there, not by email.
  3. Decision and package: on the dates in the table above, with need-based aid and any merit scholarship together.
  4. Reply: by 2 January (ED I), 15 February (ED II) or 1 May (EA and RD).
  5. Visa and work: after you enrol, Oberlin issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa. In your first year you can work on campus up to 20 hours a week in term; after a full year, off-campus Curricular Practical Training linked to your major becomes possible.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Reading 34.5% as easy: the international rate was about 8% for fall 2026.
  • Not applying for aid “to be safe”: you can never apply later.
  • Emailing income documents: Oberlin wants them in the portal.
  • Forgetting national exam results: WAEC, KCSE, CBSE or similar results are part of the file.
  • Ignoring Early Action: Oberlin offers a non-binding early round on 1 November, so you can hear back early without a binding commitment.
  • Not planning for exchange rates: your dollar contribution is fixed even if your currency falls.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • Before you arrive: English test fees (no waivers from Oberlin), optional interview fees, the F-1 visa fee and the SEVIS fee.
  • Your family contribution: the same dollar amount every year.
  • Flights: Oberlin lists travel as varying.
  • Winter gear: northern Ohio winters are cold and snowy.
  • Private loans: if you borrow to close a gap, most lenders need a US co-signer and charge interest.

Majors, the Conservatory and life in Oberlin

Oberlin has two divisions. The College of Arts and Sciences offers the liberal arts majors you would expect across the sciences, humanities and social sciences, and the Conservatory of Music trains performers, composers and recording artists. The double degree lets a student earn both a BA and a BMus, usually over five years. The new class in fall 2026 came from 46 US states and 45 countries.

The town of Oberlin is small and built around the college, in northern Ohio within reach of Cleveland. Social life centres on campus, with frequent student and Conservatory concerts. If you want a big city on your doorstep, that is a real trade-off.

Graduate admissions at Oberlin

Oberlin is mainly an undergraduate college. The only graduate students are in the Conservatory: eight enrolled in fall 2026. Programmes include the Master of Music in Historical Performance, which requires a music theory exam by 1 February. Conservatory graduate applicants follow the Conservatory’s own application and audition process.

Who should apply to Oberlin

  • Apply if: you want a liberal arts college with serious music around you, or you are a musician who wants a full academic degree too; your family can contribute something toward the cost; and you are from Africa or Japan and could qualify for one of the named scholarships.
  • Use Early Action if: you want an early answer without a binding commitment.
  • Think twice if: you need close to full funding and want strong odds, or you want a big city.
