To get into NOHE Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing, the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu has asked for: NMCN registration as a nurse, a current practising licence, at least one year of work after qualifying, and O’level credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (two sittings at most). Shortlisted nurses then write an entrance exam and face an oral interview. NOHE Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing admission requirements include no JAMB score, because only qualified nurses can apply.
2027/2028 update: NOHE Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing admission requirements and entrance exam process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 applicants should plan with. They come from the latest adverts we could find (the 2024/2025 college advert and the earlier post-basic school notice). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
The NMCN list dated December 2025 shows the Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing Programme at NOH Enugu with full accreditation from October 2023, up from provisional status in 2022. The gap is the calendar. I found no 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 advert with a fee or dates, so confirm both with the school before you pay anything.

Does NOHE burns and plastic nursing have a cut-off mark?
There is no UTME cut-off for this course. The JAMB minimums you see each year (150 for colleges of nursing in 2026) apply to school leavers entering basic nursing. For post-basic burns and plastic nursing, the school ranks registered nurses on its own written exam and interview, and it has not published a pass mark.
How rare is this course?
On the December 2025 NMCN list, only two hospitals in Nigeria run post-basic burns and plastic nursing:
| School | NMCN status (December 2025 list) |
|---|---|
| National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu | Full, October 2023 |
| National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano | Provisional, October 2020 |
That makes NOHE the only fully accredited burns and plastic nursing school on the list, and the closest by far for nurses in the South East and South South. The August 2022 NMCN list gave NOHE’s school a quota of 30; the 2025 list does not show quotas.
Eligibility: the fine print
- Basic nursing comes first. You need your basic nursing qualification and council registration before you apply. A registered midwife who is not also a registered nurse does not meet the stated rule.
- Licence must be valid. Renew it before the form season, not after you are shortlisted.
- One year after qualifying. The notice counts experience from the date you qualified, so a nurse who finished in late 2026 would only meet this rule from late 2027.
- O’level is checked again. Your WAEC or NECO must show credits in all five subjects, even though you are already a nurse. Two sittings are allowed.
- Fitness matters on a burns unit. The school asks for evidence of physical fitness, so get a medical report from a government hospital.
Documents checklist for the NOHE burns and plastic nursing form
- Application letter: to the Principal, Post Basic School of Nursing, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.
- Nursing certificate, NMCN registration and current licence.
- O’level result(s) with the five credits.
- Birth certificate or declaration of age (the college does not accept a baptismal card).
- Three confidential referee reports to the Medical Director, one from your last employer or a testimonial from the principal of your nursing school.
- Evidence of sponsorship from your employer or sponsor.
- Medical fitness report.
- Marriage certificate if married.
- Two passport photographs and an ID (NIN slip, voter’s card, driver’s licence or international passport).
Seal the photocopies in an envelope and write “Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing” at the top right corner. The orthopaedic and burns courses are handled by the same post-basic school, so a clear label keeps your file with the right panel. The notice also warned that files not arranged in the listed order could be disqualified.
NOHE burns and plastic nursing entrance exam and interview
NOHE has not published a syllabus for the exam. From the way post-basic exams usually run, I would prepare for questions on general medical and surgical nursing, skin anatomy and physiology, fluid and electrolyte balance, and wound care, then an interview where the panel checks your originals and your reasons for choosing the specialty.
Timing of past adverts
| Advert | Timing shown |
|---|---|
| Post Basic School of Nursing notice (Schoolings reprint, first posted 6 September 2022) | Form sales closed in the last week of September 2022 |
| College of Nursing Sciences advert for 2024/2025 (Myschool, 16 June 2024) | No fee or dates given |
| College advert for the 2023 basic nursing intake (Studentship) | Forms 2 to 30 October 2023 at N16,500 via Remita; exam and interview 1 to 7 November 2023 |
Adverts have appeared from June to September, so from May 2027 I would check the College of Nursing Complex at NOH Enugu every few weeks.
Worked example (illustrative)
NOHE does not publish its scoring. If the written exam carried 60 marks and the interview 40, two applicants could compare like this:
| Applicant | Written (60) | Interview (40) | Total (100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nurse Ifeoma, 3 years on a surgical ward | 41 | 32 | 73 |
| Nurse Tobe, 1 year in general outpatients | 47 | 22 | 69 |
Ifeoma’s real burns and dressing experience gives her more to say at interview, which carries her past a slightly better written score. Experience counts for more than the bare one-year minimum suggests.
How to apply for NOHE post basic burns and plastic nursing
- Check your licence date: renew with the NMCN if it is due before mid-2027.
- Ask for sponsorship early: government employers often need weeks to issue a release letter.
- Line up three referees: your unit manager, a senior colleague and your former principal are the usual choices.
- Get a fitness report: from a government hospital.
- Watch for the notice: at the College of Nursing Complex, NOH Enugu, and the hospital’s official channels.
- Pay only as the notice directs: NOHE forms have been paid through Remita into the hospital’s TSA account.
- Submit the sealed file: documents in the listed order, programme name at the top right.
- Write the exam and attend interview: carry originals.
Before you pay
No one can sell you a place on a NOHE post-basic course. Payments go into the hospital’s official account named in the current notice; confirm the details at the College of Nursing Complex before you transfer any money.
Admission odds and advice
- Thirty places was the last published quota, shared among nurses from across the country.
- Burns units value nurses who are calm with painful dressings and long admissions; give the panel real examples.
- If you also qualify for orthopaedic nursing, decide which one you want. Applying for the wrong one just to get in leads to a year in a specialty you do not enjoy.
- Kano’s school is the only other option, and it is still on provisional accreditation on the 2025 list, so most nurses in the South will aim for Enugu.
What Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing covers
Burns and plastic nursing is the care of patients with burns, major wounds, skin grafts and flaps, cleft lip and palate, contractures and other conditions treated by plastic surgeons. NOHE, a federal specialist hospital in Enugu since 1975, has a burns and plastic surgery service, which gives students daily ward and theatre practice.
Typical course content
- Skin anatomy and the physiology of burn injury.
- Fluid resuscitation and monitoring in the first days after a burn.
- Dressing techniques, infection control and nutrition for burns patients.
- Care before and after skin grafts and flaps.
- Splinting, positioning and early rehabilitation to prevent contractures.
- Psychological support for patients and families.
This is the normal scope of the specialty; NOHE has not published its own curriculum.
Duration
Not published by NOHE. As a guide, UNTH’s post-basic ophthalmic and cardiothoracic nursing courses last 12 months and its nurse anaesthetist course 18 months. Confirm the length before you arrange study leave.
Careers after the course
- Burns unit and plastic surgery ward nurse in teaching and specialist hospitals.
- Wound care nurse in surgical units and clinics.
- Theatre nursing for plastic and reconstructive surgery.

NOHE Post Basic Burns and Plastic Nursing: frequently asked questions
Is the burns and plastic nursing school at NOH Enugu accredited? Yes. The NMCN list dated December 2025 shows it with full accreditation from October 2023, which lasts five years.
Can a registered midwife apply for NOHE burns and plastic nursing? The stated rule is registration as a nurse with the NMCN, so a midwife without a nursing licence does not qualify. Ask the school directly if you hold both.
What documents do I need for the NOHE post basic nursing form? Your licence and nursing certificate, O’level results, birth certificate, three referee reports to the Medical Director, evidence of sponsorship and fitness, photos and ID, sealed in a labelled envelope.
Where else can I study burns and plastic nursing in Nigeria? The only other school on the December 2025 NMCN list is at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, which holds provisional accreditation from October 2020.
Sources and updates
Accreditation and the list of burns and plastic schools come from the NMCN list of approved schools (December 2025) (entries 14.10 and 19.6), with the earlier provisional status and quota of 30 from the NMCN list of August 2022. Eligibility, referees, sponsorship, fitness and the sealed-envelope rule come from the Post Basic School of Nursing notice reprinted by Schoolings (first posted 6 September 2022, retitled 2026/2027 in March 2026 but still showing a September 2022 closing date). Age, O’level and general documents come from the 2024/2025 college advert reprinted by Myschool (16 June 2024). The 2023 fee and dates are from Studentship’s reprint of the 2023 college advert. UNTH course lengths are from UNTH’s school pages. Exam topics and the worked example are my advice and illustration. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when NOHE advertises the 2027/2028 intake.
