NBU Cut-Off Mark for Medical Laboratory Science 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

Nigerian British University, Asa sets 180 as the minimum UTME score for Medical Laboratory Science. See the subject combination, O’level, application steps, and what is known about MLSCN and NUC approval.

The NBU cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science that 2027 candidates should plan with is 180 in the UTME. Nigerian British University, Asa (NBU) puts Medical Laboratory Science in its “180+” band on its 2026/2027 undergraduate admission page, with Nursing Science and Law. JAMB’s minimum for universities is 150, so NBU asks for 30 marks more.

2027/2028 update: NBU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

I found no Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) list or report that names NBU, and NBU’s own pages I reached do not claim MLSCN approval. I also could not confirm the course’s NUC status. Both affect your licence after graduation, so this page covers them in detail below.

I could not open a reprint of JAMB’s course list for NBU, so I cannot confirm from JAMB’s side that “Medical Laboratory Science” sits under Nigerian British University on the JAMB portal. NBU’s page says the course on your CAPS record must match the course you apply for on its portal. When you register, check that the course appears under NBU before you pay for anything.

NBU is not on News Central’s list of institution cut-offs declared at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so the 180 is NBU’s own figure from its admission page. Blog and aggregator pages that give 150 or “160+” for this course are out of date or wrong.

Safe target score for Medical Laboratory Science at NBU (my advice)

NBU has not published applicant numbers, so these bands are my judgement based on how health courses usually fill at private universities in the South East.

Your UTME scoreMy read for NBU Medical Laboratory Science
Below 160Not eligible for any NBU course this cycle
160 to 179Below the line for this course; NBU’s 160 band is open
180 to 194Eligible; your O’level and screening decide
195 to 219Good chance
220 and aboveStrong

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 195 or more, with all five science credits.

Register Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Babcock alone accepts Mathematics in place of one science, according to the brochure remarks, so do not copy that pattern for NBU. Use the JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus for revision.

The five O’level credits are fixed. NBU’s two-sitting rule is more relaxed than UI’s, which the brochure shows asking for one sitting.

Direct Entry into Medical Laboratory Science at NBU

JAMB’s main line is A-level passes including Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology. Some universities also take ND, HND or AIMLS holders, or graduates of related sciences, but those are their own remarks. NBU’s page accepts A-level, OND, HND and first degrees in general and asked for transcripts by 1 September 2026 for the 2026/2027 session. It does not say what it accepts for this course, so ask before you apply.

How NBU admits Medical Laboratory Science candidates

NBU’s 2026/2027 page describes a short process. You apply on the NBU application portal (application.nbu.edu.ng), upload every document it asks for, and make sure your details on JAMB CAPS match what you enter on the portal, including the course. The page says candidates who miss any of these will not be considered.

Applications for 2026/2027 close on Friday, 30 November 2026, and a candidate who did not pick NBU first must change to NBU on CAPS by the same date. JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, so the two line up. NBU also asks that candidates be at least 16 years old by 30 September 2026.

The page does not describe a post-UTME test, an interview, a screening date or a form price, and I found no official NBU notice with an aggregate formula. A 2026 blog said NBU post-UTME forms were on sale but gave no fee or date. So plan for some form of screening and ask the admissions office (admissions@nbu.edu.ng) what it involves before you travel.

Documents to have ready

NBU’s page asks you to upload all required documents but does not list them. Based on what Nigerian universities normally ask for, have these scanned and ready:

  • Your JAMB UTME result slip and admission letter printout from CAPS when it comes
  • Your O’level result or results (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB), not more than two sittings, showing credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  • Birth certificate or age declaration (NBU’s minimum age is 16 by 30 September of the admission year)
  • Local government identification and passport photographs
  • Your change of institution printout, if NBU was not your original choice

Worked example (illustrative only)

NBU publishes no aggregate formula. The 50:50 method in the last case (UTME divided by 8, plus half the screening percentage) is my illustration.

  1. Obinna: UTME 198 in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, five credits in one sitting. Eligible and above my target.
  2. Amarachi: UTME 186, but she wrote Mathematics instead of Physics in the UTME. Her combination does not fit the brochure line, so NBU would not consider her for this course; she needs to register the right subjects next year or switch course.
  3. Tobenna: UTME 181. If NBU sets a test and he scores 66%, his illustrative aggregate is 181 divided by 8 (22.63) plus 33, which is 55.63.

How to apply for Medical Laboratory Science at NBU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
  2. Register for the UTME with NBU as your choice: pick Nigerian British University and “Medical Laboratory Science”, with Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If you already registered elsewhere, do a JAMB change of institution to NBU.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre once your result is out. Check that the upload shows English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  4. Apply on the NBU portal: start from the NBU undergraduate admission page, create your application on application.nbu.edu.ng, choose the same course you have on CAPS and upload every document.
  5. Confirm screening: write to admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask whether there is a test or interview, when and where. Ask, in the same message, whether MLSCN has approved the programme and whether the NUC has visited it.
  6. Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and register: NBU has not published an acceptance fee on the pages I could reach. Pay only through channels the university gives you in writing, after the offer shows on your CAPS page.

Warning

Medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria must be registered by the MLSCN, and the council inducts graduates of programmes it has approved. Get NBU’s MLSCN position in writing before you pay acceptance or tuition, and accept only offers that appear on your JAMB CAPS page.

Studying Medical Laboratory Science at NBU

Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) trains the scientists who run hospital and public health laboratories: the tests behind diagnoses, blood transfusion and disease surveillance. At NBU it sits in the College of Health Sciences beside Nursing Science and Medicine. The degree normally takes five years in Nigeria, including a laboratory internship period in the later years. NBU’s pages I reached do not give its duration or course outline.

What you will study

  • Basic medical sciences: anatomy, physiology and biochemistry
  • Medical microbiology and parasitology
  • Haematology and blood transfusion science
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Histopathology and cytology, laboratory management and a final-year project

Is NBU Medical Laboratory Science accredited?

Not confirmed. The MLSCN does not publish an easy-to-find list of approved university programmes, and searches turned up no MLSCN report or news item that names NBU. NBU’s pages I could reach say nothing on the subject.

On the NUC side, NBU’s programmes are young, and the NUC usually sends its accreditation panel when a programme’s first students are close to final year. I could not read NBU’s entries in the NUC “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (the online text stops well before universities starting with N), and a search of NUC’s accreditation report pages found no report naming NBU and Medical Laboratory Science. A Vanguard headline from March 2025 reads “NUC accredits 24 courses for British University in Nigeria”, but I could not open the article to see which courses it covers or what kind of approval it describes. So I am treating the NUC status of Medical Laboratory Science at NBU as not confirmed.

Ask the department for two letters: the MLSCN approval and the latest NUC result. A young programme may simply not have been visited yet, but you should know before you commit five years.

Fees

Legit.ng’s two reports on NBU’s 2026/2027 fees (14 September 2026) give figures for Medicine, Nursing, Law, Computing and Engineering, but none for Medical Laboratory Science. For comparison, Nursing is reported at N1,270,037. Get the exact figure from NBU’s tuition page.

Careers

Registered medical laboratory scientists work in hospital laboratories, blood banks, public health and disease-control programmes, research institutes, pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, and private laboratories they own. Most roles require MLSCN registration and an internship.

Mistakes NBU Medical Laboratory Science applicants make

  • Writing Mathematics instead of Physics in the UTME.
  • Planning with 160 because NBU’s general minimum is 160: this course needs 180.
  • Having the five credits across three sittings.
  • Choosing a different course on the NBU portal from the one on CAPS.
  • Paying before checking MLSCN approval.

Sources and updates

The programme cut-offs (160, 180 and 200), the application portal, the 30 November 2026 closing date, the CAPS matching rule, the O’level and Direct Entry rules and the age limit are from the NBU undergraduate admission page (2026/2027 session, checked 29 October 2026). The national minimum of 150, JAMB’s 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities and the four-week CAPS acceptance window are from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026); the 2025/2026 national figure of 150 was reported by Channels TV (8 July 2025). NBU’s ownership, approval date and commissioning are from Wikipedia’s NBU article and its cited news reports. NBU’s 2026/2027 notice PDF and its programmes page could not be opened from here, and I could not open a reprint of JAMB’s course list for NBU. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules and the Babcock and UI remarks are from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Medical Laboratory Science, which has no NBU remark. Fee figures are from Legit.ng (14 September 2026), citing NBU’s tuition page; no Medical Laboratory Science figure was given. MLSCN status was searched on 29 October 2026 and nothing naming NBU was found. The safe target, worked example, course outline and career notes are my own general guidance. This page will be updated when NBU publishes MLSCN or NUC results, a screening notice or a 2027/2028 cut-off.
