IMT Locomotive Engineering Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Is the New Course Open to JAMB Candidates?

IMT named Locomotive Engineering among eight new programmes in June 2026, but it is not on IMT’s JAMB list or its Faculty of Engineering page, so there is no cut-off yet. See the evidence, JAMB’s Railway Engineering Technology entry and the IMT courses to choose instead.

There is no IMT Locomotive Engineering cut off mark yet. The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, named Locomotive Engineering among eight new programmes in June 2026, but the course is not on IMT’s list in JAMB’s brochure and is not one of the six departments on IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page. JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics is 100 for 2026/2027, and that is the floor that will apply when IMT lists it.

2027/2028 update: IMT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

JAMB’s brochure has no course called Locomotive Engineering for polytechnics. The nearest entry is Railway Engineering Technology, and its brochure page carries no IMT remark. So for the 2027 UTME the safe plan is an IMT engineering course that is already listed, with Mechanical Engineering the closest match. This page sets out the evidence, the figures that apply, the alternatives with their subjects and my safe targets, the CAPS steps and what a railway career needs.

Does IMT offer Locomotive Engineering through JAMB?

I checked four kinds of source. Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s brochure lists 35 entries for IMT Enugu, and none of them is Locomotive or Railway Engineering. IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page lists Agric, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Electrical/Electronics Engineering.

The course appears only in the Rector’s June 2026 speech, reported by BusinessDay, which named Locomotive Engineering with Taxation, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and a Diploma in Law among eight new programmes. The report gives no level, start date or NBTE approval for it.

Outside IMT, JAMB’s polytechnic brochure has a Railway Engineering Technology entry, and in July 2025 the Nigerian Railway Corporation signed training agreements with Yaba College of Technology, Kwara State Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic Offa, a polytechnic in Kaduna and Trinity University, according to Radio Nigeria. IMT was not among them.

So IMT has announced the course, but no UTME candidate can choose it yet. If your JAMB e-brochure shows Locomotive or Railway Engineering under IMT Enugu when you register for 2027, that overrides this page.

IMT cut-off mark history that applies to Locomotive Engineering applicants

IMT does not publish course-by-course ND cut-off marks. These are the figures that govern any ND course you pick at IMT, plus the old IMT figure blogs keep reprinting.

No 2026 IMT notice repeats the 120, so do not plan with it. What has held for two sessions is JAMB’s 100. When IMT does list Locomotive Engineering for UTME entry, that same 100 will be the legal floor, and IMT may set its own figure above it.

How to get into locomotive and railway work if IMT is your target

Locomotive work is mostly mechanical and electrical: diesel engines, traction motors, brakes, power electronics and maintenance systems. That makes Mechanical and Electrical/Electronics Engineering the natural foundations at IMT.

RouteHow it worksMy view
ND Mechanical Engineering at IMTEngines, machines and maintenance, the core of locomotive workMy first choice
ND Electrical/Electronics or Mechatronics at IMTTraction power, control and electronic systemsGood if you prefer the electrical side
Railway Engineering Technology at another schoolListed in JAMB’s polytechnic brochure; check which schools carry it on your e-brochureWorks if you can study outside Enugu

IMT courses to choose instead in the UTME, with subjects and safe targets

These IMT ND courses do appear on the JAMB brochure list for IMT and sit closest to Locomotive Engineering. The subjects come from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s brochure, checked on 29 October 2026; the safe targets are my advice, not IMT rules.

IMT ND courseUTME subjects (with Use of English)My safe target
Mechanical Engineering TechnologyMathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Technical Drawing (IMT also accepts Biology)140 or higher; 160 is comfortable
Electrical/Electronics Engineering TechnologyMathematics, Physics, Chemistry (IMT also accepts Biology)150 or higher; 170 is comfortable
Mechatronics Engineering TechnologyMathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Technical Drawing140 or higher; 160 is comfortable
Civil Engineering TechnologyMathematics, Physics, Chemistry150 or higher; 170 is comfortable

Civil Engineering is on the list for candidates drawn to track and bridge work, the permanent way side of railways. For rolling stock and locomotives, I would pick Mechanical first.

O’level for these courses

For the engineering courses (Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Civil), JAMB’s brochure asks for five O’level credits: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus two more from a list that includes Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics or Basic Electricity, Biology or Agricultural Science, Economics and English Language. A credit in English Language is required on top of that, so in practice your five should include English. For Civil Engineering, IMT’s own remark accepts four credits at one sitting or five at two.

Railway Engineering Technology, where it is offered, asks for credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus one more, so the same O’level set covers it.

If you register English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the UTME and hold credits in those four plus one more science or technical subject, you meet the subject rules for every course in the table above.

How IMT screening works for ND science and engineering courses

IMT’s website links a notice titled “Call for 2026/2027 admission into ND and HND programs (regular and part-time)”, and applications run through the SLMS application page on portal.imt.edu.ng. The 2026/2027 screening fee, dates and test format were not in any official source I could open.

Worked example

Take Kosisochukwu, who wants to maintain trains. She scored 147 in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Technical Drawing from two sittings.

  1. Course check: Locomotive Engineering is not on IMT’s JAMB list, so CAPS cannot offer it at IMT.
  2. Pick a route: she chooses Mechanical Engineering at IMT, which takes her four UTME subjects.
  3. Against my safe target: 147 minus 140 = 7. She is just inside the range I call competitive for Mechanical.
  4. O’level: her five credits across two sittings meet the brochure rule.
  5. Later: she watches for IMT’s Locomotive Engineering intake and asks whether ND Mechanical counts towards it, and applies for SIWES placements with railway operators.

How to apply to IMT for the 2027 intake, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Check the IMT course list: during registration, open the IMT Enugu list on JAMB’s e-brochure. If Locomotive or Railway Engineering is not there, choose one of the related courses above.
  3. Register for the UTME: Choose Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, Mechatronics or Civil Engineering Technology with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and pick IMT Enugu as your polytechnic choice. If you picked another school first, a JAMB change of institution is possible before IMT screening closes, and a JAMB change of course fixes a wrong course.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to an accredited CBT centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded. If your result was awaiting at registration, upload it as soon as it is out.
  5. Fill IMT’s screening form: when the admission call appears on imt.edu.ng, apply on portal.imt.edu.ng, enter your JAMB registration number, pay through the channel the portal names and print your slip.
  6. Check your result and CAPS: use the result checker on the IMT portal, then log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status and open CAPS.
  7. Accept within four weeks: JAMB set four weeks for 2026 offers. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status you might see.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: blogs put IMT’s acceptance fee at ₦25,000, but IMT has not published it in any source I reached. Pay only against an invoice from the IMT portal.

Warning

Anyone offering “IMT Locomotive Engineering admission” before the course appears on IMT’s JAMB list is selling something outside the process. All offers appear on JAMB CAPS, and fees go only through invoices on portal.imt.edu.ng.

What Locomotive Engineering covers and where it leads

Locomotive engineering covers the design, operation and maintenance of the engines and rolling stock that run on railways. In Nigeria the main employer is the Nigerian Railway Corporation, with newer standard gauge lines bringing more demand for trained technicians. At polytechnic level the training would combine mechanical and electrical engineering with railway-specific systems.

What you study

  • Mechanical: diesel engines, mechanics of machines, materials and workshop practice.
  • Electrical: electrical machines, traction motors and power electronics.
  • Railway systems: braking, signalling basics and rolling stock maintenance.
  • Support courses: engineering mathematics, drawing and safety.

Accreditation

At IMT’s Global Homecoming on 13 June 2026, the Rector, Prof. Sunday Gozie Ogbodo, said all courses offered by IMT are now fully accredited, after more than 70% of programmes had lost accreditation by the time he took office in 2024. An NBTE accreditation team visited in November 2025. That statement covers courses IMT already runs. I found no NBTE approval notice naming Locomotive Engineering at IMT, so treat its accreditation as not confirmed until IMT or NBTE publishes it.

Careers

  • Rolling stock and locomotive maintenance technician
  • Workshop technician in railway depots
  • Plant and heavy equipment maintenance in other industries
  • Further study to HND or a degree in Mechanical or Railway Engineering

If you are writing the UTME again, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and what to do with your JAMB score first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for a Locomotive Engineering cut-off: there is no UTME entry yet.
  • Picking a course JAMB does not list for IMT: CAPS can only offer what IMT has on the brochure.
  • Planning with the old 120: that is a 2023 IMT figure for ND courses.
  • Dropping Physics or Chemistry: every route above needs both.
  • Paying agents: offers come only through CAPS.

IMT Locomotive Engineering cut off mark: frequently asked questions

What course should I study to work on trains in Nigeria? Mechanical Engineering is the closest course at IMT. Railway Engineering Technology is in JAMB’s polytechnic brochure if you can study elsewhere.

What are the JAMB subjects for Railway Engineering Technology? JAMB’s polytechnic brochure lists Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus Use of English. The O’level needs credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one more.

Sources and updates

The new programme list is from the Rector’s speech reported by BusinessDay (13 June 2026). The department list is from IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page. IMT’s JAMB course list is from Myschool’s IMT Enugu course list, and the Railway Engineering Technology subjects from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Railway Engineering Technology, both checked on 29 October 2026. The Nigerian Railway Corporation agreements are from Radio Nigeria (1 July 2025). The 100 minimum, the 31 December 2026 polytechnic admission deadline and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026); the 2025 minimum is from Nairametrics and Channels TV (8 July 2025). The 120 figure is from a 2023 IMT notice reprinted by O3schools. Screening and acceptance fees and the HND rule are from blogs and unofficial. Safe targets are my advice. This page will be updated when IMT lists Locomotive Engineering for UTME entry.
