The IMT cut off mark for Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology is 100 in the UTME, JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has not published a higher departmental figure for Electrical/Electronics, so 100 is the official floor for the 2026/2027 session and the safest planning figure for 2027/2028.
2027/2028 update: IMT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Electrical/Electronics is one of IMT’s most competitive engineering courses, and JAMB’s brochure gives IMT one unusual option here: it accepts Biology among the UTME subjects. Below are the official figures, where the old 120 comes from, my safe target score, the brochure subjects, how screening has run, two worked examples and each CAPS step.
IMT cut off mark for Electrical/Electronics Engineering at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum UTME score for polytechnics (applies to IMT) | 100 | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| IMT’s own cut-off for Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology | Not published | No IMT departmental figure for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 in any source I reached |
| My safe target score (advice) | 150 or higher; 170 is comfortable | Consultant advice, not an IMT rule |
| Level and award | National Diploma (ND), then HND | ND is the UTME entry point at IMT |
| Duration | 2 years full-time for ND (four semesters) | HND is another four semesters after ND and a year of industrial attachment |

IMT cut-off mark history for Electrical/Electronics
IMT does not publish course-by-course cut-off marks for its ND programmes. The history below is the national floor that applies to every polytechnic, plus one older IMT figure that still circulates on blogs.
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (Nairametrics and Channels TV, 8 July 2025) |
| 2023 UTME | 120 | IMT’s own ND screening threshold in a 2023 notice | Old; reprinted on blogs under 2026 headings |
The 120 you will see on many blogs comes from IMT’s 2023 ND screening notice, signed by the Registrar at the time. Some sites now print it under 2026/2027 headings, but no 2026 IMT notice repeats it. The figure that has held for two sessions running is JAMB’s 100. For Electrical/Electronics, which fills quickly, neither number tells you much about who actually gets in.
Safe target score for Electrical/Electronics at IMT (my advice)
The bands below are my judgement as an admissions adviser. IMT has not published anything like them, so use them for planning only.
| Your UTME score | My read for Electrical/Electronics at IMT |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any polytechnic, IMT included |
| 100 to 129 | Eligible to apply, but a long shot for this course |
| 130 to 149 | Possible with strong credits in Mathematics and Physics |
| 150 to 169 | Competitive |
| 170 and above | Strong for Electrical/Electronics at IMT |
I rank Electrical/Electronics with Civil Engineering as the most sought-after engineering courses at IMT. Many candidates see it as the route into power, telecoms and solar work, and that keeps the pool large. IMT has not published applicant numbers, so this is my reading of the general pattern at South East polytechnics. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 150, ideally 170.
A candidate scoring in the low 100s should keep an eye on Mechatronics or Agricultural Engineering at IMT as fallback options, where I expect the pressure to be lighter.
Catchment and state of origin
IMT is owned by Enugu State, so Enugu indigenes are its home catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. IMT has not published a merit, catchment or quota split for its ND courses, so do not plan around a formula it has never announced. Your UTME score, your science grades at O’level and how early your documents are complete count for more.
IMT Electrical/Electronics Engineering subject combination and O’level requirements
| Requirement | Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology (ND) at IMT |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
| IMT remark in the brochure | IMT accepts Biology (UTME remark for IMT-ENU) |
| O’level | Five credits in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus any two of Biology or Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics or Basic Electricity, Auto Mechanics, Metal Work, Woodwork, Further Mathematics, English Language, Geography, Economics or Commerce |
| Combination I would register | English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (SSCE or GCE) |
| Direct Entry | Not used for ND. HND entry is with a relevant ND through IMT’s HND form |
| Special requirements | None published for IMT |
JAMB’s polytechnic brochure lists Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry for Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology. Use of English is compulsory for every UTME candidate, so it does not appear in the list.
At O’level, Basic Electronics or Basic Electricity, Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing are the extras that help most in the first year. The Electrical/Electronics entry places English Language among the optional subjects rather than stating it as compulsory, but IMT’s other engineering entries ask for a credit in English, and so does every polytechnic I know of. Treat an English credit as essential.
What IMT’s Biology option means
The only IMT line on the Electrical/Electronics brochure page is a UTME remark: IMT accepts Biology. The remark does not say which subject Biology replaces. The usual reading is that Biology can stand in for Chemistry, because Mathematics and Physics are the core of any electrical course.
I would use it only if you are already registered with Biology and cannot change. Physics and Chemistry prepare you far better for circuit theory and materials, and a Biology combination could leave you stuck if you later want to transfer to a school without the same waiver. Before registering, check the current Electrical/Electronics entry for IMT Enugu on your JAMB e-Facility profile.
Direct Entry and HND
There is no Direct Entry into the first year of an ND, so every ND Electrical/Electronics place goes through the UTME and JAMB CAPS. HND Electrical/Electronics is a separate stage: reprints of IMT’s HND notice ask for a relevant ND with a CGPA of at least 2.50, or a lower CGPA backed by two years of verifiable industrial experience, and the application goes through IMT’s own HND form rather than the UTME. Those HND details come from reprints, so confirm them on the portal. Our IMT HND admission guide covers that route.
How IMT screening works for ND Electrical/Electronics
IMT’s website links a notice titled “Call for 2026/2027 admission into ND and HND programs (regular and part-time)”, and applications run through the SLMS application page on portal.imt.edu.ng. The admission result checker is on the same portal. The 2026/2027 screening fee, dates and test format were not in any official source I could open, so the table separates what is confirmed from what is only reported.
| Detail | What we know | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies | Candidates who chose IMT in the UTME and scored at least the JAMB minimum | Standard JAMB rule |
| Where | portal.imt.edu.ng (SLMS Application) | Confirmed link on imt.edu.ng |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 in earlier years | Reported by blogs; not dated 2026, confirm on the portal |
| Payment | Interswitch, Enugu State IGR or Quickteller in earlier years | Reported; confirm on the portal |
| Format | Computer-based screening plus O’level upload in earlier years | Reported; IMT has not published the 2026/2027 format |
| Part-time option | Not on IMT’s part-time list as recorded in our fact base | Plan on full-time; confirm on the portal |
| Admission deadline for polytechnics | 31 December 2026 | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
| Time to accept an offer on CAPS | Four weeks | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
Worked example for an Electrical/Electronics applicant
IMT has not published an aggregate formula for ND admission. Some blogs print one, but none cites an IMT document, so the example below only measures the gap between a UTME score, the national floor and my safe target, then checks the O’level against the brochure.
Take Emeka, who scored 171 and has, from one NECO sitting, B3 in English, B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, C5 in Chemistry and C4 in Basic Electricity.
- Eligibility: 171 minus 100 = 71. He is far above JAMB’s polytechnic minimum.
- Against my safe target: 171 minus 150 = 21. He is in my strong band.
- O’level check: five credits at one sitting, with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and a relevant fifth subject.
- What I would advise: keep Electrical/Electronics, get NECO on CAPS and apply as soon as the IMT form opens.
Blessing scored 128 after registering English, Mathematics, Physics and Biology. Because IMT accepts Biology for this course, her combination is valid at IMT. On score, 128 minus 100 = 28, so she can apply, but she is 22 marks short of my target. I would tell her to apply, keep her O’level on CAPS complete, and weigh any CAPS offer into another IMT engineering course carefully, because it still leads to an HND.
How to apply for Electrical/Electronics Engineering at IMT, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register for the UTME: choose Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and pick IMT Enugu as your polytechnic choice. If you picked another school, do a JAMB change of institution before IMT screening closes.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to an accredited CBT centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded. If your result was awaiting at registration, upload it as soon as it is out.
- Watch IMT’s notice: the admission call appears on imt.edu.ng and the form opens on portal.imt.edu.ng. Use only the official portal.
- Fill the screening form and pay: enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice, pay through the channel the portal names, then finish the form and print your slip.
- Check your result and CAPS: use the result checker on portal.imt.edu.ng, then log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status and open CAPS.
- Accept within four weeks: JAMB set four weeks for 2026 offers. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status you might see.
- Pay acceptance and clear: blogs put IMT’s acceptance fee at ₦25,000, but IMT has not published it in any source I reached. Pay only against an invoice from the IMT portal.
Warning
Every genuine IMT offer appears on JAMB CAPS. Anyone selling an “IMT Electrical/Electronics slot” or a special list is not part of the process. Pay fees only through invoices generated on portal.imt.edu.ng.
Your chances of getting Electrical/Electronics at IMT
JAMB’s 100 only opens the door to screening. In Electrical/Electronics you compete with other Electrical/Electronics applicants, and many of them have scores in the 150s and above.
Your UTME score is fixed once results are out, so the part you still control is the O’level. Have every result uploaded to CAPS, with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry showing as credits, and avoid a third sitting.
Electrical/Electronics was not on IMT’s part-time course page as recorded in our fact base, so plan on the full-time ND. The faculty page confirms the department runs both ND and HND, so a good ND leads on to HND Electrical/Electronics.
Studying Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology at IMT Enugu
IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page lists six departments: Agric Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Electrical/Electronics Engineering. The page dates the school to 1973, names Engr. Dr. Timothy Adibe as Dean, and says each department runs both an ND and an HND, with each taking four semesters. On that page the department appears as Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
What you study
IMT has not put its course outline for this programme online, so the list below describes what ND Electrical/Electronics generally covers in Nigerian polytechnics. Ask the department for its own outline at registration.
- Electrical principles: circuit theory, electrical measurements and instrumentation.
- Machines and power: electrical machines, power generation, transmission and distribution basics.
- Electronics: analogue and digital electronics, and introductory telecommunications.
- Installation practice: wiring regulations, domestic and industrial installation, and workshop practice.
- Support courses: engineering mathematics, technical drawing and computer applications, plus a SIWES placement.
Accreditation
At IMT’s Global Homecoming on 13 June 2026, the Rector, Prof. Sunday Gozie Ogbodo, said all courses offered by IMT are now fully accredited, after more than 70% of programmes had expired accreditation when he took office in 2024. An NBTE accreditation team visited in November 2025. NBTE has not published a programme-by-programme result for Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology that I could find, so its individual status is not confirmed. Ask the department to show it during clearance if this matters to you.
Careers
- Electrical installation and maintenance technician in buildings and factories
- Technical staff with electricity distribution companies
- Telecoms and electronics maintenance roles
- Solar and inverter installation, either employed or self-employed
- Instrumentation and control assistant in manufacturing plants
Engineering technologists and technicians in Nigeria register with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Most people reach the technologist grade after the HND, so plan on the full ND, industrial attachment and HND route if a professional engineering career is your aim.

Mistakes that cost Electrical/Electronics applicants an IMT place
- Treating 100 as admission: it only makes you eligible to apply.
- Planning with the old 120: that comes from a 2023 notice.
- No English credit at O’level: the brochure lists it as optional here, but you should have it.
- Relying on the Biology option elsewhere: it is an IMT waiver, not a general rule.
- Missing O’level on CAPS: screening checks what CAPS shows.
- Buying a “slot”: offers come only through CAPS and the IMT portal.
IMT cut off mark for Electrical/Electronics Engineering: frequently asked questions
What is the IMT cut off mark for Electrical Electronics Engineering? It is 100, JAMB’s 2026 minimum for polytechnics. IMT has not published a separate departmental figure, and I would aim for 150 or more.
Can I use Biology in JAMB for Electrical Electronics in IMT? Yes. JAMB’s brochure says IMT accepts Biology for this course. Physics and Chemistry are still the better choice if you have not registered yet.
Is 140 a good score for Electrical Engineering in IMT? 140 is 40 above the minimum, so you can apply with a fair chance if your Mathematics and Physics credits are good. It is below my 150 target, so have a second IMT option in mind.
Does IMT offer HND Electrical Electronics Engineering? Yes. IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page says each department, Electrical/Electronics included, runs both ND and HND. HND entry is with a relevant ND, not through the UTME.
Sources and updates
The 100 minimum for polytechnics in 2026, the 31 December 2026 admission deadline for polytechnics and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The 2025 minimum of 100 is from Nairametrics and Channels TV (8 July 2025).
