Northeastern University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Northeastern University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Northeastern University admitted about 5.6% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 and gives international students merit scholarships only, considered automatically. Here are the $95,582 charges for 2026-27, the DCF, English score ranges, test policy and the 1 November 2026 and 1 January 2027 deadlines.

Northeastern University admission requirements for international students are a Common App or Coalition application, your transcripts (translated if needed), one teacher and one counselor recommendation, the $75 fee, an English test unless you qualify for a waiver, and the Declaration and Certification of Finances (DCF), without which your application is not complete. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Northeastern admitted 5,920 of 105,256 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 5.6%, and it ties for No. 42 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition.

On money, Northeastern is clear: international students are not eligible for need-based aid, but they are considered for merit scholarships automatically, with no separate application. In 2025-26, 323 nonresident undergraduates received non-need-based institutional aid averaging $31,459. Tuition, fees, housing and food for 2026-27 come to $95,582. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I and Early Action close on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 1 January 2027.

Northeastern University ranking

Northeastern ties for No. 42 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. In Boston, Boston College and Tufts tie at No. 31 and Boston University sits at No. 34, so Northeastern ranks a little lower but is now harder to get into than any of them. Its admit rate has fallen as applications have passed 100,000 a year.

Northeastern acceptance rate and class profile

These figures come from Northeastern’s Common Data Set 2025-2026, published by University Decision Support, covering the class that entered in fall 2025.

Measure (fall 2025 first-years)Figure
Applications105,256
Admitted5,920
Enrolled2,736
Acceptance rateabout 5.6%
Early Decision applications5,404
Early Decision admits1,910 (about 35%)
Average high school GPA (weighted, 4.0 scale)4.22
SAT middle 50% (22% of enrollees submitted)1440 to 1510
ACT middle 50% (6% submitted)33 to 34

The gap between the ED rate (about 35%) and the overall rate (under 6%) matters most here. Northeastern fills a large share of its class through binding Early Decision. For an international student, that is only useful if your family can pay the full cost without help, because ED is binding and there is no need-based aid to rely on. Northeastern does not publish a separate international acceptance rate on its own pages.

Northeastern tuition for international students in 2026-27

International and US students pay the same tuition. Northeastern’s Common Data Set gives these charges for 2026-27:

Item (2026-27)Cost
Tuition$71,050
Required fees$1,650
On-campus housing$13,612
Food$9,210
Tuition, fees, housing and food$95,582

Books, personal costs, travel and health insurance come on top. Northeastern did not list those items on the pages I could check, so add your own estimates for them, along with flight prices. Remember that co-op semesters change your living costs; many students pay rent in Boston or elsewhere during a paid placement.

Does Northeastern give scholarships to international students?

Only merit scholarships. Northeastern’s required materials page states that international students are not eligible for need-based aid but may receive merit scholarships, and that there is no separate scholarship application. Northeastern also cannot give international students any US state or federal funding.

How big are the awards? Northeastern does not list amounts on the pages I could access. The Common Data Set gives the best picture: in 2025-26 (estimated), 323 degree-seeking nonresident undergraduates received institutional non-need-based aid averaging $31,459, about $10.2 million in total. With 2,860 international undergraduates, that suggests roughly one in nine receives a merit award, and the average award covers well under half of tuition.

What this means in practice:

  • Plan to pay at least $64,000 a year from family funds even if you win an average award.
  • The DCF you submit with your application must show funds for the full cost.
  • You do not file the CSS Profile or ISFAA for Northeastern.
  • A strong academic record and test scores, if you send them, are what move you up for merit.

Our guide to the best American scholarships for international students lists colleges that do give need-based aid.

The Declaration and Certification of Finances

Northeastern requires all non-US citizens to submit the DCF through the Application Status Check. Your application is not complete without it, which is different from many colleges that ask only after admission. Prepare it early:

  1. Sponsor details: the person or organisation paying, with signature.
  2. Bank evidence: recent statements or a bank letter showing liquid funds for at least the first year’s costs.
  3. Language: English, or with an official translation.
  4. Consistency: use the same sponsor and figures later for your I-20 and visa interview.

Testing and English requirements

Northeastern is test-optional, and applicants without SAT or ACT scores are not penalised. If you send scores, it superscores. Use SAT code 3667 or ACT code 1880.

All applicants must show English proficiency. Northeastern sets no minimum score. Instead it publishes the middle 50% range of admitted students, which is a good guide to what competitive looks like:

TestMiddle 50% of admitted students
TOEFL iBT (code 3667)106 to 113
IELTS Academic7.5 to 8.0
Duolingo English Test135 to 145
PTE Academic73 to 78
Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency191 to 204

Scores must be less than two years old. You can request a waiver if you have completed four consecutive, full-time academic years, immediately before enrolling, at schools where native English is the main language of instruction. Request it through the Application Status Check. Northeastern also accepts InitialView and Vericant interviews, but they do not replace an English test.

What goes into a Northeastern application

  1. Common App or Coalition Application.
  2. Transcripts from every secondary school, with official English translations. Schools with narrative reports send the narratives.
  3. One teacher recommendation and one counselor recommendation. You may add one or two more, but they may not all be read.
  4. English test results or a waiver.
  5. DCF for non-US citizens.
  6. Application fee: $75.
  7. Mid-Year Report if you are deferred to Regular Decision.
  8. Optional: SAT or ACT scores; InitialView or Vericant interview; a portfolio for the College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD).

Northeastern’s pages show these dates without years; they are given here for the fall 2027 cycle and match the dates in its latest Common Data Set.

DCF warning

Upload the Declaration and Certification of Finances through the Application Status Check soon after you apply. Northeastern treats your application as incomplete without it, even though the DCF has nothing to do with merit scholarship review.

How to write your Northeastern essay

Northeastern’s required materials page lists no Northeastern-specific supplemental essay, so the Common App personal statement (up to 650 words) is the only essay most applicants write. CAMD applicants who send a portfolio add a 500-word personal statement with it. Check the Northeastern section of the Common App before you submit in case optional questions appear.

Because the personal statement does all the work, write about something that shows how you learn by doing, which fits Northeastern’s co-op model. A sample opening, for illustration only: “For six weeks in my holiday, I kept the books for my uncle’s phone repair kiosk, and in week two I found that we were losing money on every screen protector we sold…” Then show what you changed, what you learned and how you want to keep learning that way.

Avoid writing a list of achievements. The activities section already holds those.

What happens after you apply

  1. Application Status Check: Northeastern sends login details. Upload the DCF and confirm transcripts and recommendations have arrived.
  2. Decision: by 1 January 2027 for ED I, 15 February for EA, 1 March for ED II and 1 April for RD.
  3. Merit scholarship: any award is included with your admission offer, since there is no separate application.
  4. Admitted programmes: some students are offered a start at another Northeastern campus or abroad instead of Boston; read the offer carefully before you accept.
  5. Enrol: ED students commit; others reply by 1 May 2027.
  6. I-20 and visa: Northeastern issues the I-20 from your financial documents, then you pay the SEVIS fee and book the F-1 interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Forgetting the DCF and leaving the application incomplete.
  • Applying ED without having the full cost covered. ED admits are binding, and there is no need-based aid.
  • Treating the middle 50% English ranges as minimums and not applying with a slightly lower score; they are guides, not cut-offs.
  • Sending English test results older than two years.
  • Assuming an interview replaces the English test.
  • Ignoring Early Action, which gives an early answer without a binding commitment.

Costs that Northeastern aid does not cover

A merit scholarship averaging about $31,000 leaves more than $64,000 of the 2026-27 charges for your family. Also budget for:

  • Health insurance, which Massachusetts requires for students.
  • Books, a laptop and personal costs.
  • Flights, visa fees and the SEVIS fee.
  • Rent and travel during co-op placements, which may be outside Boston.
  • Winter clothing and break housing.

Majors and strengths

Northeastern’s signature is co-op: periods of full-time work built into the degree, usually alternating with study. Its own figures show where students go: in 2023-24, business and marketing made up 20.6% of bachelor’s degrees, computer and information sciences 16.0%, and engineering 15.0%. Other strong areas include health sciences, nursing, data science, journalism and design. Many majors can be combined across colleges.

Campus and city

The main campus sits on Huntington Avenue in central Boston, close to the Museum of Fine Arts and Fenway, with the Green Line and Orange Line nearby. It is an urban campus with city streets running through it. Northeastern also runs campuses in other cities, including London, and some admitted students start their degree at one of these.

Graduate admissions at Northeastern

Graduate programmes run through each college and through the College of Professional Studies, with separate international admission pages, deadlines and English minimums. Engineering, computer science and analytics master’s programmes enrol many international students. PhD students are usually funded through assistantships; most master’s students pay their own way. The undergraduate merit scholarships do not carry over.

Northeastern compared with similar colleges

Case Western Reserve UniversityNo. 44 (tied)Limited need-based aid; competition scholarships up to full tuition1 November 2026 (EA and ED I)

Northeastern is the hardest of these four to get into and, with BU, the least open to families who need aid. CWRU admits a far larger share of applicants and offers both need-based aid and full-tuition competitions, while Tufts meets full need for those it admits.

Who should apply to Northeastern

Apply if your family can pay most of about $96,000 a year plus extras, you want work experience built into your degree, and you are drawn to business, computing, engineering or health in a big city. Northeastern also suits students who are comfortable starting at another campus if offered.

Look elsewhere for need-based help. Colleges such as MIT and Amherst are need-blind for international students, and Duke and Yale meet full need for those they admit.

Sources and updates

I checked these details on Northeastern’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the undergraduate admissions pages for first-year application information and required materials (English proficiency, DCF, interviews and deadlines), and the Common Data Set 2025-2026 published by University Decision Support, which supplies the admission figures, the 2026-27 charges and the nonresident aid data. Northeastern’s international applicants, merit scholarship and deadline pages could not be opened during research, so merit award names and amounts are not given here. The U.S. News profile could not be opened either, so the rank comes from published reports of the 2027 edition. We update this guide when Northeastern changes its dates, costs or aid rules.
