ABSU Agricultural Science Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Admission Requirements and Screening

ABSU’s cut-off mark for Agricultural Science Education is 150 in the UTME. See ABSU’s own O’level rule, the JAMB subjects, NCE Direct Entry, NUC status and the screening steps.

The ABSU cut off mark for Agricultural Science Education is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) set 150 as the minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, and it did not publish a separate figure for this course. Once you pass 150 you are screened, and places go to the strongest applicants for the course.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Two details on this page change how you should apply. ABSU’s O’level rule for this course differs from the general JAMB line, and the course appears on JAMB under a slightly different name. I also cover a safe target score, Direct Entry through the NCE, the screening steps, NUC’s record for the programme and the jobs it leads to.

ABSU has never released a separate cut-off for this course in any notice I could find. The effective cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted, and the university does not publish it.

One point confuses many education candidates in 2026. JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting exempted NCE programmes at colleges of education from the UTME. That rule is about the three-year NCE certificate. ABSU’s education courses are university degree programmes, and the 2026/2027 screening notice applied the same 150 UTME minimum to every regular degree course, so you still need to sit the UTME to enter at 100 level.

Safe target score for Agricultural Science Education at ABSU (my advice)

Education courses at state universities in the South East usually draw fewer applicants than the pure sciences, and Agricultural Science Education is not among the crowded ones. This table is my reading, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for this course at ABSU
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 159Eligible; strong credits in Agricultural Science and Biology will carry you
160 to 169A fair chance
170 to 189Good
190 and aboveStrong

I would aim for 170 or more. That leaves room if the course is fuller than usual in your year, and it keeps a change of course to Agricultural Economics and Extension or Crop Production at ABSU realistic if you decide you want an agriculture degree instead.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Agricultural Science Education at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBAgricultural Science and Education (Faculty of Education)
UTMEUse of English plus any three of Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Physics, Economics, Geography and Mathematics
O’level (general line)Five credits in English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, Mathematics and another relevant subject
O’level (ABSU remark)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology and any other subject
Direct EntryTwo A-level passes in Biology, Zoology or Botany and another science subject; or NCE merit in Biology and another science subject; or NCE merit in Agriculture (Double Major)
ABSU remarks (UTME and Direct Entry)None

Which three UTME subjects?

The brochure is generous: any three of seven subjects. My pick is Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Agricultural Science. Those three line up with your O’level, prepare you for the science courses in the first year, and still qualify you for most agriculture degrees at ABSU if you change course. Economics or Geography is allowed, but a combination like Economics, Geography and Mathematics would close the agriculture and science doors.

ABSU’s O’level rule is different

The general JAMB line asks for Chemistry plus Biology or Agricultural Science. ABSU’s own remark asks for both Agricultural Science and Biology, plus English Language, Mathematics and any other subject, and it does not name Chemistry. In practice:

  • If you have credits in Agricultural Science and Biology, you meet ABSU’s line, and Chemistry can be your fifth subject.
  • If you have Biology and Chemistry but no Agricultural Science credit, you meet the general line and miss ABSU’s remark. Ask the department before you pay for screening.
  • If you are still writing WAEC or NECO, register Agricultural Science and Biology and give both serious attention.

Direct Entry through the NCE

Direct Entry is common for this course because many agriculture teachers start with an NCE. The brochure accepts an NCE merit in Agriculture (Double Major), an NCE merit in Biology and another science subject, or two A-level passes in Biology, Zoology or Botany and another science. It has no ABSU remark for Direct Entry here, and the 2026/2027 notice adds that Direct Entry candidates need the basic five O’level credits. Confirm the entry level with ABSU before you buy a Direct Entry form.

How ABSU screens Agricultural Science Education applicants

ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and your O’level grades are what ABSU has in front of it when it ranks Agricultural Science Education applicants. Your credits in Agricultural Science and Biology carry extra weight because ABSU names both.

Worked example for Agricultural Science Education candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Chinonso scored 162 with B3 in English, C4 in Mathematics, A1 in Agricultural Science, B2 in Biology and B3 in Chemistry. UTME points: 162 ÷ 8 = 20.25. O’level points: 8 + 7 + 10 + 9 + 8 = 42. Illustrative total: 62.25.
  2. Uchenna scored 181 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Agricultural Science, C6 in Biology and C6 in Chemistry. UTME points: 181 ÷ 8 = 22.62. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 48.62.
  3. The result: Chinonso leads by 13.63 points with a UTME score 19 marks lower. In a course where most applicants sit between 150 and 190, the O’level result usually decides the order.

How to apply for Agricultural Science and Education at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS and you take it to a CBT centre to register.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Agricultural Science and Education at Abia State University with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Agricultural Science. ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Make sure the upload shows credits in Agricultural Science and Biology, since ABSU’s remark names both.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. An ABSU offer shows on CAPS first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Agricultural Science Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.

Agricultural Science Education at ABSU: the programme

The course is run by ABSU’s College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA; the JAMB brochure lists it under the Faculty of Education. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Agricultural Science Education degrees in Nigeria combine two sets of courses:

  • Agriculture content: crop production, soil science, animal production, agricultural economics, farm mechanisation and agricultural extension.
  • Basic sciences: first-year biology, chemistry and mathematics.
  • Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum studies, teaching methods for agricultural science, measurement and evaluation, and guidance.
  • Practical work: farm practicals, school farm management and teaching practice in secondary schools.
  • Final year: a research project in agricultural education.

Accreditation, degree and duration

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Agricultural Science Education with a run of interim and full results ending in full accreditation, with a maturity date of 2026. Full accreditation runs for five years, so the course was due for its next NUC visit around now. I could not find a 2026 result, so ask the department whether the re-accreditation visit has taken place. The degree title for this course at ABSU (for example B.Sc (Ed) or B.Agric (Ed)) was not on any page I reached, and four years is the usual length for UTME entrants.

Careers

  • Agricultural science teacher in junior and senior secondary schools, after registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
  • Agricultural extension officer with state agricultural development programmes and NGOs.
  • Farm manager or supervisor on school, mission and commercial farms.
  • Agribusiness, poultry, fish or crop enterprises of your own.
  • Postgraduate study in agricultural education or extension.

For revision, our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus cover two of the subjects I recommend. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Agricultural Science Education applicants an ABSU place

  • Uploading O’level without Agricultural Science: ABSU’s remark names both Agricultural Science and Biology.
  • Picking three arts or social science subjects for the UTME: Economics, Geography and Mathematics are allowed but weaken your position and limit your options.
  • Searching JAMB for “Agricultural Science Education”: the course is listed as Agricultural Science and Education.
  • Assuming the NCE exemption covers you: it applies to colleges of education, and ABSU degree entrants still sit the UTME.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer.

ABSU Agricultural Science Education: frequently asked questions

Is 160 enough for Agricultural Science Education in ABSU? 160 clears the 150 minimum, and with good credits in Agricultural Science and Biology it gives you a fair chance. I would still aim for 170 or more.

Do I need Chemistry at O’level for Agricultural Science Education in ABSU? ABSU’s remark in the JAMB brochure asks for English, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology and any other subject, so Chemistry is not named. The general JAMB line does name Chemistry, so a Chemistry credit as your fifth subject covers both.

Can I do Agricultural Science Education in ABSU with an NCE? Yes. The brochure accepts an NCE merit in Agriculture (Double Major) or in Biology and another science subject for Direct Entry. You also need the basic five O’level credits.

Is Agricultural Science Education in ABSU accredited? NUC’s published results show full accreditation as the latest result, with a maturity date of 2026, which means a fresh visit was due. Ask the department for the current status.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Agricultural Science and Education, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. The note on NCE programmes comes from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported in May 2026. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. ABSU’s fees, the exact degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
