There is no published AKSCOE cut off mark for English Language Education for 2027/2028, and under the 2026 rules an NCE applicant with at least four O’level credits does not need a UTME score. Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, has English on JAMB’s list as a double major and in pairs with Efik, Ibibio, French, Mathematics, Political Science, Social Studies and Economics. You still register with JAMB and receive your offer on CAPS, so your English Language credit carries the most weight.
2027/2028 update: AKSCOE admission requirements and JAMB’s entry rules for NCE usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the position on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. It is based on the 2026/2027 national NCE rules from JAMB and the Ministry of Education, because AKSCOE has not published its own notice. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Akwa Ibom State College of Education (AKSCOE), Afaha Nsit, is a state-owned college set up on 10 January 1991, the first tertiary institution created by the Akwa Ibom State Government. NCCE lists it among the colleges of education as a state college in Akwa Ibom, marked open. The college has not published a 2026/2027 admission notice that I could find, and no notice of any year gives a cut-off for a single course, so what follows rests on JAMB’s rules, JAMB’s course list for the college, the college’s 2022/2023 screening notice and its own website. My advice is labelled as advice.

AKSCOE English Language Education cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | No UTME needed | NCE applicants with at least four credit passes were exempted from the UTME; JAMB registration and CAPS still apply | Official federal policy (11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | None set | JAMB announced 150 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, with no separate college of education figure | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting) |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for colleges of education | Official (Nairametrics, 8 July 2025) |
| 2022/2023 | 100 | AKSCOE’s NCE screening was open to 2022 UTME candidates with 100 or more (full time, part time and sandwich) | College screening notice, reported by Myschool (24 August 2022) |
| Undated | 120 (NCE) | One admissions site says AKSCOE asks NCE applicants for 120 and degree applicants for 180; the text is recycled from an older year | Unverified |
The 120 figure keeps appearing on admissions sites, but the page that carries it reuses old text, and the college’s own 2022/2023 notice used 100. With NCE applicants now exempt from the UTME, neither number decides a 2027/2028 NCE application. Your O’level does.
Do you need JAMB or UTME for English Language Education at AKSCOE?
You need JAMB. You do not need a UTME score if you hold at least four O’level credit passes. These are the official steps behind that answer:
- 11 May 2026: at JAMB’s policy meeting, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said NCE candidates with a minimum of four credit passes would no longer sit the UTME. They still register with JAMB, and CAPS verifies their results before any admission letter is issued. Admissions done outside CAPS were declared illegal.
- June 2026: JAMB’s NCE registration guide set the fees and said there would be no 100 level or 200 level degree admission into any college of education from 2026/2027, affiliated degrees included.
- 23 July 2026: JAMB opened NCE registration without UTME at Institutional Professional Registration Centres (IPRCs) in colleges of education and at JAMB centres.
- Start date: Nairametrics reported on 11 May 2026 that the exemption would start with the 2027 admission cycle, while JAMB’s June guide shows it already working in 2026. Either way, a 2027/2028 NCE applicant registers with JAMB and does not need the UTME.
What JAMB charges for NCE registration
| What you pay | Amount (2026/2027) | Who pays it |
|---|---|---|
| O’level verification code, one sitting | ₦1,500 | Every NCE applicant, bought from the exam body |
| O’level verification code, two sittings | ₦2,000 | Applicants combining two results |
| JAMB NCE application | ₦3,500 | New NCE applicants who did not register for the UTME |
| Centre or IPRC charge | ₦700 | Every NCE applicant |
| Moving a 2026 UTME registration to NCE | ₦700 only | UTME candidates whose first choice was a college of education |
These are JAMB’s 2026/2027 amounts. Check them at the centre before you pay, because the 2027/2028 guide may change them.
Safe target for English Language Education at AKSCOE (my advice)
This is my own reading as an admissions adviser. AKSCOE has not published how it ranks applicants. Without a UTME score, a college can only compare people on their O’level results, so your grades in English Language and Literature in English now do the work a UTME score used to do.
| Your O’level position | My read for English Language Education at AKSCOE |
|---|---|
| Fewer than four credits | Not eligible for the no-UTME route and below the college’s own floor; resit WAEC, NECO or NABTEB first |
| Four credits, but no credit in English Language | Weak; English Language is the subject the course is built on |
| Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and your partner subject, one or two sittings | Meets the college rule with room to spare |
| Five or more credits at one sitting, with a B grade in English Language and a credit in Literature in English | Strong. This is what I would aim for. |
If you also plan to write the 2027 UTME to keep a university option open, aim for 150 or more, the 2026 university minimum. That score is for the university option only; it does not change your NCE application.
UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for English Language Education at AKSCOE
| Requirement | English Language Education at AKSCOE |
|---|---|
| UTME | Not needed for NCE applicants with at least four credit passes (2026 policy) |
| UTME subjects (only if you register for the UTME) | Use of English, Literature in English and two other Arts or Social Science subjects linked to your pairing. This is JAMB’s usual pattern; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure. |
| O’level (the college’s own rule) | No 2026/2027 notice found. Admissions sites quoting older notices say five credits including English Language and Mathematics, at no more than two sittings (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) |
| O’level I would bring | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and your partner subject |
| Results JAMB accepts | WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS, checked with a verification code from the exam body |
| Awaiting results | A college cannot propose you on CAPS until your result is uploaded |
| Direct Entry or degree entry | None into any college of education from 2026/2027 (JAMB). NCE year one is the only way in |
JAMB’s exemption line is four credits, while the older AKSCOE requirement reported online is five, including English and Mathematics. Until the college publishes its 2026/2027 rule, apply with five credits that include English Language, Mathematics and both subjects of your pairing, so that neither rule can be used against you.
The English pairings on JAMB’s AKSCOE list
You register for a named course, and it fixes your second teaching subject. JAMB’s list for AKSCOE has English as a double major and these pairs. English/Ibibio and Ibibio/English both appear; the first named subject is usually your main department, so ask which one the college is admitting into.
| Pairing | Credits I would have besides English |
|---|---|
| English (Double Major) | English Language and Literature in English |
| English/Efik | English Language, plus Efik if you took it |
| English/Ibibio or Ibibio/English | English Language, plus Ibibio if you took it |
| English/French | English Language and French if your school taught it |
| English/Mathematics | English Language and Mathematics (a strong grade) |
| English/Political Science | English Language and Government |
| English/Social Studies | English Language and Civic Education or Government |
| Economics/English | English Language and Economics |
AKSCOE pairs English with both Efik and Ibibio, which suits teachers who want to work in Akwa Ibom and Cross River. English/Mathematics is unusual and useful: it lets you teach the two core subjects every school needs.
How AKSCOE screening and admission work for English Language Education
AKSCOE has not published a 2026/2027 screening notice that I could find, and its website’s news section had no admission notice when I checked. For 2022/2023 the college ran a screening exercise that opened on 23 August 2022 for NCE and degree applicants. An admissions site lists the documents it says AKSCOE screening asks for: passport photographs, O’level results, files, the JAMB result slip and an LGA certificate. That list is not on a college notice I could read, so treat it as a guide and confirm the portal, fee and documents at the college before paying anybody.
JAMB’s part is fixed. The college’s admission officer proposes candidates on CAPS, the Provost recommends them, and JAMB checks each candidate’s O’level against the exam body’s record with the verification code. Only then does an offer appear on CAPS. If you also registered for the UTME and a college recommends you for NCE, JAMB suspends your UTME process.
Worked example for an English Language Education applicant (illustrative)
AKSCOE has not published an aggregate formula or ranking method. The people below are made up; the example only shows how to test a result against the credit rules and JAMB’s steps.
Aniekeme has one WAEC sitting: English Language B2, Literature in English C4, Mathematics C6, Government C5, CRS B3, Biology D7, Economics C6. She wants English/Political Science.
- Credit count: English, Literature, Mathematics, Government, CRS and Economics are credits. Six credits clear JAMB’s four-credit rule and the five-credit rule reported for AKSCOE.
- English and Mathematics check: both are credits, which covers the older AKSCOE requirement.
- Pairing check: Government C5 supports Political Science; Economics C6 would also allow Economics/English.
- Process: one-sitting verification code (₦1,500), NCE registration with AKSCOE first (₦3,500 plus ₦700), then CAPS.
Compare Ubong, who has English C5, Literature B3, Government C4 and CRS C6 but D7 in Mathematics. He meets JAMB’s four-credit line, but misses the English and Mathematics rule reported for AKSCOE. I would advise him to resit Mathematics.
Your chances of admission into English Language Education at AKSCOE
AKSCOE does not publish intake numbers. English is one of the busiest NCE courses at most colleges, and AKSCOE is a large, long-established college. Go in with five credits including English and Mathematics, and register early with AKSCOE first.
- Put AKSCOE first: JAMB routes each NCE registration to the first-choice college. If AKSCOE was not your first choice, change it on JAMB before the college starts proposing candidates.
- Pick a pairing the college runs: a combination the college has not listed cannot be offered to you.
- Get the verification code right: CAPS compares it with the exam body’s record, and a mismatch stalls the process.
- Check CAPS every week: JAMB set 31 December 2026 as the deadline for 2026/2027 college of education admissions, and an offer is not yours until you accept it.
How to apply for English Language Education at AKSCOE, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Buy your verification code: from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or NBAIS, for one or two sittings. Copy your exam numbers and grades exactly as printed.
- Register for NCE at an IPRC or JAMB centre: log in with your profile code, choose NCE registration, pay ₦3,500 plus ₦700, and pick Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit as first choice with the English Language Education pairing you want (for example English (Double Major)).
- Enter your O’level: type in your results and the verification code at the centre. CAPS will check these exact results, so upload them before the college starts proposing candidates.
- Already registered for the UTME? If a college of education was your first choice, JAMB moves your record to NCE and you pay ₦700 only. If your first choice was another school, change it to AKSCOE through JAMB.
- Complete the college’s own form if it asks for one: admissions sites name a screening portal and a bank account for AKSCOE, but I could not confirm either on a college document. Get the official link and fee from akscoe.edu.ng or the admissions office at Afaha Nsit, and use the same names and results as on your JAMB profile.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, accept and print your JAMB admission letter. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and register: AKSCOE has not published its acceptance or school fees online. Get the amounts in writing and pay only through the channel the college names.
Warning
Any admission done outside JAMB CAPS is illegal, the Federal Government said in May 2026. If someone offers you an AKSCOE place that does not show on CAPS, or asks for money to “process” one, do not pay.
Registered for another school? Read JAMB change of institution. For dates, see when JAMB 2027 registration starts; you still register even if you will not write the exam.
Studying NCE English Language Education at AKSCOE
English Language Education trains you to teach English in primary and secondary schools. The college has not published a course outline online, so this is what NCE English normally covers under the NCCE minimum standards.
What you study
- English grammar, phonetics and phonology
- Composition, comprehension and summary writing
- Literature in English: prose, poetry and drama, including African writers
- Methods of teaching English as a second language
- Education courses, general studies and a supervised teaching practice
Duration, approval and the degree question
The NCE is normally a three-year programme. At its matriculation on 11 November 2020, the college said an NCCE and NUC visit had given it full institutional accreditation and full accreditation in 23 academic programmes, with some others partial; it did not name them on the page I read. Ask the college for the current status of your course before you pay acceptance.
AKSCOE has run degree programmes in affiliation with the University of Uyo; its 2020 matriculation admitted 1,032 NCE and 450 degree students. JAMB’s June 2026 guide ended new 100 level and 200 level degree admissions into colleges of education, affiliated degrees included, so from 2026/2027 the college admits for the NCE. Plan your degree at a university after the NCE.

Mistakes that cost English Language Education applicants an AKSCOE place
- No credit in English Language: it is the course itself.
- Mixing up English/Ibibio and Ibibio/English: they are separate entries on JAMB’s list.
- Waiting for a UTME score: NCE applicants with four credits do not need one.
- Following an old screening advert: several admissions sites recycle AKSCOE text from earlier years; check the date and source.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee payment and registration at the college are separate steps.
AKSCOE cut off mark for English Language Education: frequently asked questions
Do I need JAMB to study English Language Education at AKSCOE? Yes. You register with JAMB and your offer must appear on CAPS, but under the 2026 rules you do not sit the UTME if you have at least four O’level credit passes.
What is the cut off mark for English Language Education in Akwa Ibom State College of Education? AKSCOE has not published one. Its 2022/2023 notice used 100 for NCE screening, JAMB’s national minimum was 100 in 2025/2026, and from 2026/2027 NCE applicants with four credits were exempted from the UTME.
Does AKSCOE offer English and Ibibio? Yes. JAMB’s list for AKSCOE includes English/Ibibio and Ibibio/English, as well as English/Efik.
Is Mathematics required for English Education at AKSCOE? The older AKSCOE requirement reported online names English and Mathematics for all applicants. No 2026/2027 notice has changed that, so I would have a Mathematics credit.
