Gregory University Cut-Off Mark for Petroleum Engineering 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

Gregory University has no separate Petroleum Engineering cut-off. It used 140 in its last two notices, but JAMB’s university minimum is now 150. See a safe target score, subjects, O’level rules, screening and the accreditation question.

The Gregory University cut off mark for Petroleum Engineering is not published as a separate figure. Gregory set 140 as its general minimum UTME score in its last two notices (2024/2025 on its own website, 2025/2026 in a Myschool reprint), but JAMB fixed 150 as the 2026 minimum for every university. Plan for at least 150, and for a course like Petroleum Engineering I would aim for 180 or more. Register the course on JAMB as Petroleum Engineering; it is on JAMB’s list of Gregory courses.

2027/2028 update: Gregory University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest notices Gregory has published (2024/2025 and 2025/2026) and JAMB’s 2026 national minimum, because no 2026/2027 Gregory notice with a score was available. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Accreditation, said plainly: I could not find any NUC accreditation result for Gregory’s Petroleum Engineering. NUC’s per-programme report pages carry Gregory results from its late 2024 visits for Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Insurance, International Relations, Medical Laboratory Science, English and Health Education, all full. None of them is for Petroleum Engineering, and NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results publication could not be read as far as Gregory’s section. The programme may still hold accreditation, so ask the university for its NUC and COREN status in writing before you pay. If you want a programme with a published full result nearby, Abia State University’s Mechanical Engineering (full, maturity 2028) and Civil Engineering (full, maturity 2030) are on NUC’s list, and Gregory’s own Chemical Engineering is the closest course at the same school.

Gregory has never published a separate figure for Petroleum Engineering. The 140 applied to every course in both notices. Because JAMB raised the floor for universities to 150 at its May 2026 policy meeting, a Gregory notice cannot admit anyone below 150 for 2026 admissions, and I would not expect the 2027 floor to drop back. Plan with 150 as the line you must cross, and treat anything above it as your margin for the course itself.

Safe target score for Petroleum Engineering at Gregory (my advice)

This is my judgement, not a Gregory rule. Private universities in Abia usually fill engineering places from candidates scoring well above the floor, and engineering is one of the courses where Gregory can afford to pick the stronger applicants.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Gregory Petroleum Engineering
Below 150Not eligible for any university admission in the 2026 cycle
150 to 164Eligible, but you may be offered a related course instead
165 to 179Possible, especially with good Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry grades
180 to 199Competitive
200 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

Your O’level grades carry weight in a private university’s decision, so a B3 or better in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry helps as much as a few extra UTME marks.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Gregory Petroleum Engineering

RequirementPetroleum Engineering
UTME subjectsUse of English, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other science subject
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB
SittingsNot more than two (Gregory’s 2025/2026 notice)
Direct EntryA level passes including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (JAMB’s general rule)
Gregory-specific remarkNone in the brochure reprint

These rules come from the JAMB brochure entry for Petroleum Engineering as reprinted by Myschool. The page carries remarks for FUTO, NDU, RSU, UNIBEN and several other universities, but none for Gregory, so the general rule is the one that applies to you. Biology is not one of the UTME subjects, so do not swap Physics or Mathematics for it on registration day.

For Direct Entry, other universities on the same brochure page accept ND or HND holders in related engineering fields. Gregory has not published its own Direct Entry rules for Petroleum Engineering, so ask the admissions office whether it accepts ND or HND before you register for DE.

How Gregory University screening works for Petroleum Engineering

Gregory runs an online post-UTME registration. The details below come from the university’s 2024 notice and the 2025/2026 notice as reprinted by Myschool. Gregory had not published 2026/2027 dates or a fee in any source I could reach, so treat the fee as last year’s figure.

Worked example for a Petroleum Engineering candidate

Gregory has not published how it ranks candidates, so there is no official aggregate to calculate. What you can work out is how far your UTME score sits above JAMB’s floor and above a sensible target, and whether your O’level meets the course rules. The method below is my illustration, not a Gregory formula.

Take Ebuka, who scored 193 and has B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry, C4 in English and C5 in Biology from one sitting.

  1. National floor: 193 minus 150 = 43. He clears JAMB’s minimum comfortably.
  2. Against my safe target: 193 minus 180 = 13. He is inside the competitive band.
  3. O’level check: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and a fifth science (Biology), all credits. Nothing rules him out.
  4. What I would advise: register for screening early and keep checking CAPS; his profile is the kind Gregory is likely to admit into engineering.

Ngozi scored 158 with C6 in Physics. 158 minus 150 = 8. She can apply, but she sits below my target band, and a C6 in Physics is a weak point for an engineering course. If Gregory offers her a related course on CAPS, she should consider it seriously.

How to apply for Petroleum Engineering at Gregory University, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Petroleum Engineering as the course and Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics as your subjects, with Gregory University, Uturu as your first choice.
  3. Fix your choice if needed: if Gregory was not your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before you register for screening. The 2025/2026 notice was for candidates who chose Gregory first.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre, once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. Universities cannot recommend you on CAPS without it.
  5. Register for screening: on the Gregory post-UTME portal, fill the form, upload your passport photograph (PDF), UTME result and O’level result, then pay the screening fee online.
  6. Watch CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status and then Access my CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Accept on CAPS: accept the offer, print your JAMB admission letter, then follow Gregory’s instructions for the acceptance fee and clearance. Gregory has not published its acceptance fee in any source I reached, so confirm the amount on the official portal before paying.

Warning

Gregory University says applicants should pay only through its official portals and that it has no authorised agents. Every genuine admission shows on JAMB CAPS, so ignore anyone selling a “slot” or a “special list”.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). JAMB also stated that admissions done outside CAPS are illegal. Gregory’s phone lines on its 2024 admission notice were 0806 094 4681 and 0803 733 3920.

Studying Petroleum Engineering at Gregory University

Gregory University is a private university licensed in 2012 and sited at Amaokwe Achara, Uturu, in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. Its founder is Prof. Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe. The university lists twelve colleges and says it runs over 55 programmes.

Petroleum Engineering is one of the six departments on the official page of Gregory’s College of Engineering, alongside Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering. Gregory has not published the duration of the degree; a B.Eng in Nigeria normally runs for five years, including industrial training.

What you study

  • Early years: mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing and the general engineering courses every B.Eng student takes.
  • Core petroleum courses: petroleum geology, drilling engineering, reservoir engineering, production engineering, well testing and natural gas engineering.
  • Industrial training: Nigerian engineering degrees include SIWES placements, and petroleum students usually look for them with oil and gas or service companies.
  • Final year: a project, usually on a reservoir, drilling or production problem.

Accreditation and professional registration

As stated at the top, I found no NUC result for Gregory’s Petroleum Engineering, and I also found no public COREN accreditation record for it. COREN registration matters because it is the route to becoming a registered engineer in Nigeria. Ask Gregory for both letters, and ask whether the programme has graduated a class yet. Voice of Nigeria reported in September 2026 that NUC’s 2025/2026 accreditation exercise at Gregory covered engineering among other areas, but the report gave a result only for Pharmacy.

Careers

  • Upstream oil and gas companies (drilling, reservoir and production roles)
  • Oilfield service and gas processing companies
  • Regulation and government agencies in the petroleum sector
  • Consulting, energy economics and postgraduate research

For UTME revision in the hardest of your four subjects, start with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Mistakes that cost Petroleum Engineering applicants

  • Treating 140 as current: it was Gregory’s figure before JAMB raised the university floor to 150.
  • Wrong subject combination: Petroleum Engineering needs Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics with English.
  • Missing O’level on CAPS: the university cannot recommend you without it.
  • Gregory not as first choice: the screening notice was for first-choice candidates; fix it with a change of institution early.
  • Paying an agent: Gregory says it has no authorised agents.
  • Not checking accreditation: for this course, ask before paying fees.

If your 2026 score fell short, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result and use the score.
