The NBU cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery that 2027 candidates should plan with is 200 in the UTME. Nigerian British University, Asa (NBU) places MBBS alone in its “200+” band on its 2026/2027 undergraduate admission page, the highest minimum it sets for any course. JAMB’s national minimum for universities is 150, so NBU asks medicine candidates for 50 marks more.
2027/2028 update: NBU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Read the accreditation section before you build your plans around NBU for medicine. I could not find NBU on any Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) list of accredited medical schools I was able to open, and NBU’s own pages that I reached say nothing about MDCN approval. The course may still have approval I could not see, so settle this with the university first.
I could not open a reprint of JAMB’s course list for NBU, so I cannot confirm from JAMB’s side that “Medicine and Surgery” sits under Nigerian British University on the JAMB portal. NBU’s page says the course on your CAPS record must match the course you apply for on its portal. When you register, check that the course appears under NBU before you pay for anything.

Nigerian British University (NBU) is a private university at Km 10 Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, Asa, in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State. It is owned by the Adorable Foundation for Educational Development, received NUC approval in April 2022 and was commissioned in February 2023. Its 2026/2027 admission page groups courses into five units: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, the College of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.

|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 200 | NBU’s minimum UTME score for MBBS | Official: NBU admission page |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official: JAMB 2026 policy meeting (NAN, 11 May 2026) |

NBU is not on News Central’s list of institution cut-offs declared at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so the 200 comes from the university’s own admission page. Some aggregator sites give 150 or “160+” for every NBU course; those figures are out of line with NBU’s own page and should be ignored for medicine.
Safe target score for MBBS at NBU (my advice)
These bands are my own judgement. NBU has published no applicant numbers or past admission lists, and its medical class is likely to be small, as it is at most new private universities.
| Your UTME score | My read for NBU Medicine |
|---|---|
| Below 160 | Not eligible for any NBU course this cycle |
| 160 to 179 | Below the MBBS line; NBU courses in the 160 band are open to you |
| 180 to 199 | Below the MBBS line; Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science (180) are open |
| 200 to 219 | Eligible; your O’level grades and screening will decide |
| 220 to 249 | Good chance |
| 250 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 230 or more, with all five O’level credits in one or two sittings. A score just above 200 only makes you eligible.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for NBU Medicine and Surgery
| Requirement | What applies | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Course name to select on JAMB | Medicine and Surgery (confirm it appears under NBU) | JAMB brochure, Myschool reprint |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology | JAMB brochure, Myschool reprint |
| O’level (JAMB) | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology | JAMB brochure, Myschool reprint |
| O’level (NBU rule) | At least five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects, in not more than two sittings | NBU admission page |
| Direct Entry (JAMB) | A-level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, plus the UTME requirements, or a relevant degree | JAMB brochure, Myschool reprint |
| NBU remark in the brochure | None. No remark on the page names NBU | Myschool reprint, checked 29 October 2026 |
There is no choice to make on the UTME side: register Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Revise with the JAMB Biology syllabus and the JAMB Chemistry syllabus, since those two papers carry most of the biology and chemistry you will meet again in first year.
The O’level line has five fixed subjects. NBU allows two sittings, which is kinder than several universities: the JAMB brochure shows UNIBEN, UI, ABSU and FUTO asking for all five credits at one sitting. If you are applying to NBU and ABSU in the same year, the ABSU rule is the stricter one.
Direct Entry into Medicine at NBU
JAMB’s brochure accepts A-level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, or a relevant degree, with the UTME requirements. NBU’s page lists A-level, OND, HND and first degrees as Direct Entry qualifications in general and says transcripts must reach the Registrar early (for 2026/2027 the date was 1 September 2026). Medical schools rarely admit ND holders into MBBS, so ask NBU in writing whether it takes Direct Entry into medicine at all, and at which level, before you apply.
How NBU admits Medicine candidates
NBU’s 2026/2027 page describes a short process. You apply on the NBU application portal (application.nbu.edu.ng), upload every document it asks for, and make sure your details on JAMB CAPS match what you enter on the portal, including the course. The page says candidates who miss any of these will not be considered.
Applications for 2026/2027 close on Friday, 30 November 2026, and a candidate who did not pick NBU first must change to NBU on CAPS by the same date. JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, so the two line up. NBU also asks that candidates be at least 16 years old by 30 September 2026.
The page does not describe a post-UTME test, an interview, a screening date or a form price, and I found no official NBU notice with an aggregate formula. A 2026 blog said NBU post-UTME forms were on sale but gave no fee or date. So plan for some form of screening and ask the admissions office (admissions@nbu.edu.ng) what it involves before you travel.
Documents to have ready
NBU’s page asks you to upload all required documents but does not list them. Based on what Nigerian universities normally ask for, have these scanned and ready:
- Your JAMB UTME result slip and admission letter printout from CAPS when it comes
- Your O’level result or results (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB), not more than two sittings, showing credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
- Birth certificate or age declaration (NBU’s minimum age is 16 by 30 September of the admission year)
- Local government identification and passport photographs
- Your change of institution printout, if NBU was not your original choice
Worked example (illustrative only)
NBU publishes no aggregate formula. The example checks three candidates against NBU’s published rules; the 50:50 method used for the last case (UTME divided by 8, plus half the screening percentage) is my illustration, not NBU policy.
- Adaeze: UTME 236 in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with five credits in one WAEC sitting. She clears NBU’s 200 and my 230 target.
- Chinedu: UTME 212, but his only Physics credit is in a third sitting. NBU accepts not more than two sittings, so he must fix the O’level before NBU can admit him.
- Ifeoma: UTME 204. If NBU sets a test and she scores 70%, her illustrative aggregate is 204 divided by 8 (25.5) plus 35, which is 60.5.
Ifeoma is eligible but sits close to the line. With 204 I would keep a second choice ready, such as NBU Nursing Science or Medical Laboratory Science at 180.
How to apply for Medicine and Surgery at NBU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
- Register for the UTME with NBU as your choice: pick Nigerian British University and “Medicine and Surgery”, with Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If you already registered elsewhere, do a JAMB change of institution to NBU.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre once your result is out. Check that the upload shows English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Apply on the NBU portal: start from the NBU undergraduate admission page, create your application on application.nbu.edu.ng, choose the same course you have on CAPS and upload every document.
- Confirm screening: write to admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask whether there is a test or interview, when and where. Ask the same email to confirm, in writing, the MBBS programme’s MDCN status and where clinical postings will hold.
- Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and register: NBU has not published an acceptance fee on the pages I could reach. Pay only through channels the university gives you in writing, after the offer shows on your CAPS page.
Warning
A medical degree is only useful if the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria recognises the school. Graduates of a school it has not accredited cannot be inducted or registered for housemanship. Ask NBU for its MDCN approval letter and its admission quota before you pay acceptance or tuition, and ignore anyone who offers an MBBS place for a fee outside JAMB CAPS.
Studying Medicine and Surgery at NBU
Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) trains you to diagnose and treat illness. At NBU it sits in the College of Health Sciences alongside Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science. Nigerian MBBS programmes normally run for six years: pre-clinical years in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, then clinical years in a teaching hospital. NBU’s pages that I reached do not state its duration or name the hospital it will use for clinical training.
Is NBU Medicine accredited by MDCN?
Not confirmed. Two MDCN documents on mdcn.gov.ng, both undated, list fully and partially accredited medical schools. Neither includes NBU. In Abia State they show Abia State University (fully accredited, quota 120) and, in one of them, Gregory University, Uturu (partially accredited, quota 75). I found no news report of an MDCN visit to NBU either.
The MDCN usually approves a new medical school in stages, starting with the pre-clinical years and moving to clinical accreditation later, and it fixes how many students each school may admit. Ask NBU three questions: has MDCN approved the programme, at what stage, and what is NBU’s quota.
On the NUC side, NBU’s programmes are young, and the NUC usually sends its accreditation panel when a programme’s first students are close to final year. I could not read NBU’s entries in the NUC “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (the online text stops well before universities starting with N), and a search of NUC’s accreditation report pages found no report naming NBU and Medicine and Surgery. A Vanguard headline from March 2025 reads “NUC accredits 24 courses for British University in Nigeria”, but I could not open the article to see which courses it covers or what kind of approval it describes. So I am treating the NUC status of Medicine and Surgery at NBU as not confirmed.
Fees
Legit.ng reported on 14 September 2026, citing NBU’s tuition page, that MBBS tuition for 2026/2027 is N2,743,000 per session. It gave no breakdown and did not mention accommodation or other charges. I could not open NBU’s fee page, so confirm the figure there before you budget.
Careers
After graduation and induction, doctors in Nigeria do a one-year housemanship, then NYSC, then work in hospitals, public health, research or the armed forces, or start residency training in a specialty. Every one of these steps depends on MDCN registration.

Mistakes NBU Medicine applicants make
- Applying with 180 or 190 because blogs quote 150 or 160 for every NBU course: MBBS is 200.
- Missing Physics or Biology at credit level, or spreading the five credits over three sittings.
- Choosing a different course on the NBU portal from the one on CAPS: NBU says mismatched applications are not considered.
- Paying tuition before getting MDCN status in writing.
- Leaving the change of institution until after the 30 November closing date.

The national minimum of 150, JAMB’s 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities and the four-week CAPS acceptance window are from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026); the 2025/2026 national figure of 150 was reported by Channels TV (8 July 2025). NBU’s ownership, approval date and commissioning are from Wikipedia’s NBU article and its cited news reports. NBU’s 2026/2027 notice PDF and its programmes page could not be opened from here, and I could not open a reprint of JAMB’s course list for NBU. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules and the one-sitting universities are from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Medicine and Surgery, which has no NBU remark. The MBBS fee is from Legit.ng (14 September 2026), citing NBU’s tuition page.
