The ABSU Guidance and Counselling cut off mark is the general 150 in the UTME that Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in 2026/2027. Before you pick the course, know this: NUC’s latest published accreditation result for ABSU Guidance and Counselling is Denied. ABSU has not said publicly whether the programme is still admitting, so treat it as a risky choice until the university confirms otherwise in writing.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Warning
NUC’s published accreditation results list ABSU Guidance and Counseling as Denied in its latest entry. Do not accept an offer or pay acceptance fees for this course until ABSU’s admissions office confirms in writing that it is admitting and that accreditation has been restored. Fully accredited alternatives at ABSU are listed below.
The course is still on ABSU’s JAMB course list as Guidance and Counseling, so JAMB will let you choose it. This page sets out what the NUC record shows, what “Denied” means for a new student, the JAMB requirements, and the ABSU courses with full status that suit someone who wants to work with people in schools.
ABSU Guidance and Counselling cut off mark and status at a glance

| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |

| Course name on JAMB | Guidance and Counseling | ABSU’s JAMB course list (Myschool reprint) |

| O’level (general line) | Five credits including English, with a pass in Mathematics | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |

Is Guidance and Counselling in ABSU accredited?
Not according to the latest NUC record I could find. NUC’s publication of accreditation results for all universities from 1990 to 2025, uploaded in September 2026, has this line under Abia State University’s Education programmes: Guidance and Counseling, Full, Full, Interim, Denied. There is no maturity date after the denial, and no later result restoring it.
The extracted table does not line each result up with a year, so I cannot tell you when the denial happened. It is the most recent result in the record, and nothing follows it. The same publication also shows denied as the latest result for a group of other ABSU Education programmes, including Fine Art, English, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics Education.
What “Denied” means for a new student
A denied programme failed NUC’s accreditation visit. NUC’s then Acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, told The ICIR in February 2024 that such an outcome “can lead to suspending admission into the programme”. The university itself can stay fully approved while one programme is denied. For you, the risk is that ABSU may not admit into the course, or that you start a degree whose accreditation has to be restored before you finish. ABSU has published nothing on this that I could reach, so the honest position is “denied, current intake unconfirmed”.
ABSU Guidance and Counselling cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | ABSU’s general minimum for online screening in regular degree courses | ABSU notice, reprinted 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Guidance and Counselling figure | None published | Blog “departmental cut-off” tables cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
I am not giving a “safe target score” for this course. Your score is better spent on a course with full accreditation. If ABSU does confirm that Guidance and Counselling is admitting, the same advice as for other Education courses applies: aim for 160 or more with clean credits.
JAMB requirements for Guidance and Counselling (for reference)
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| UTME (general line) | Use of English plus any three subjects |
| UTME (ABSU remark) | None; remarks cover other universities such as UNILAG, IMSU and UNN |
| O’level (general line) | Five credits (or NTC/NBC credits or TC II merit) including English Language, with a pass in Mathematics |
| O’level (ABSU remark) | None |
| Direct Entry (general line) | A-level passes or NCE in two subjects, plus the UTME requirements |
| Direct Entry (ABSU remark) | None |
On paper this is one of the easiest courses to qualify for: any three UTME subjects and only a pass in Mathematics. That ease is part of why it attracts candidates, and why the accreditation question matters so much. The Myschool brochure page does not mention ABSU anywhere, even though ABSU’s course list links to it, so ABSU has added no special rules.
If you have already chosen Guidance and Counseling at ABSU, a JAMB change of course to one of the options below keeps you at ABSU. If counselling is the career you want, a change of institution to a university whose programme shows full or interim status in the NUC publication is the other route.
Better options at ABSU
These ABSU courses are on its JAMB list and show full status as their latest NUC result. Their subject rules are stricter than Guidance and Counselling, so check each one.
| ABSU course | Latest NUC result | Why it might suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Educational Management and Planning | Full, maturity 2029 | School administration and planning; needs an Economics credit |
| Social Studies Education | Full, maturity 2029 | Teaching degree with only an O’level pass in Mathematics at ABSU |
| Sociology | Full, maturity 2027 | Human behaviour and social problems; a route into social work |
| Library and Information Science | Full, maturity 2029 | Education-linked course with a strong record |
| Business Education | Full, maturity 2027 | Teaching degree with full status |
Educational Management and Planning is the closest fit for most people considering Guidance and Counselling, because both prepare you for non-classroom roles in schools. If counselling is your long-term goal, you can also add a postgraduate qualification in guidance and counselling after a first degree in another education course.
How ABSU screens applicants
Whichever ABSU course you settle on, the screening is the same. The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed the 2026/2027 notice; I could not open the original, so these details come from the Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026) reprints.
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment or debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
Steps to apply safely
- Decide on the course first: if you still want Guidance and Counselling at ABSU, write to the admissions office and ask whether it is admitting and what its current NUC status is.
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN.
- Register or correct your course: choose your course at Abia State University on JAMB, or change to it before admission closes.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out.
- Register for ABSU screening: at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng; pay the fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your documents.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng and accept within JAMB’s four-week window. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay only on the portal: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached.
JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal, so an offer that is not on your CAPS page is not from ABSU. JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for public universities such as ABSU (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026).
Guidance and Counselling: the programme and careers
The course belongs to ABSU’s College of Education at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU’s outline and degree title were not available. Guidance and Counselling in Nigeria usually covers counselling theories and techniques, developmental and abnormal psychology, career and vocational guidance, psychological testing, marriage and family counselling, and practicum in schools, alongside general education courses and a project. It normally runs four years from UTME entry.
- School counsellor in secondary schools.
- Career guidance and student affairs roles in colleges and universities.
- Human resources and employee welfare.
- Counselling work with NGOs, rehabilitation centres and community programmes.

Mistakes to avoid with this course
- Assuming a course on the JAMB list is accredited: JAMB lists the course, but NUC’s latest result is denied.
- Accepting on CAPS without asking questions: get ABSU’s written answer on intake and accreditation first.
- Picking it only because the requirements are easy: the stricter alternatives above have full status.
- Leaving a course change too late: changes must be made before admission closes.
- Paying an agent: admissions happen only on CAPS and the ABSU portal.

Sources and updates
The accreditation history of Guidance and Counseling and the other ABSU programmes named here comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 (uploaded September 2026). The quote on what denial can mean comes from The ICIR (17 February 2024). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Guidance and Counseling, linked from ABSU’s JAMB course list. The 150 minimum, the ₦2,000 fee and the screening steps come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026). The national minimum and the CAPS rules come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The list of alternatives is my own advice. ABSU has published nothing on this programme’s intake that I could find. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU or NUC publishes a new status.
