UNN Cut-Off Mark for Veterinary Medicine (DVM) 2027/2028: Complete Admission Guide

UNN needs 160 in the UTME to screen for Veterinary Medicine in 2027/2028 and has published no departmental cut-off. See the subject combination, O’level, Direct Entry routes, an aggregate example and the score to aim for.

The UNN cut off mark for Veterinary Medicine for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME to apply for screening, with UNN as your first choice. The University of Nigeria set that figure in its 2026/2027 screening notice of 13 July 2026. UNN has not published a departmental merit or catchment cut-off for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, so no website can show you an official UNN Veterinary Medicine cut-off.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

The other number you will see is 200, the minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, according to Vanguard. UNN screened from 160, but Veterinary Medicine is a six-year professional degree with limited places, so successful candidates score well above both numbers. This guide covers the subject combination confirmed by UNN’s veterinary faculty, Direct Entry routes, how screening ran, an aggregate example, merit and catchment, and the score I would aim for.

The 160 only gets you into screening. The departmental cut-off is the lowest score UNN actually admits into Veterinary Medicine after ranking applicants on merit and catchment, and UNN does not release it. My target score below is advice, and I say so where it appears.

UNN Veterinary Medicine cut-off history

These are the only figures that trace back to UNN or JAMB. None of them is specific to Veterinary Medicine.

I did not find even a blog estimate for UNN Veterinary Medicine that I would trust. Those sites do place Medicine at UNN around 310 to 320 and Pharmacy around 280 to 295, as unofficial estimates. Veterinary Medicine usually draws fewer applicants than either, but it is still a science professional course, so a score near the published minimum will not carry you.

JAMB subject combination for Veterinary Medicine at UNN

UNN’s veterinary departments publish the same entry rule on their own websites: Chemistry, Physics, Biology and English Language in the UTME, and credit passes in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology at O’level. The JAMB brochure (Myschool’s reprint) adds English Language to the O’level credits, which every UNN course requires anyway.

RequirementWhat you need for Veterinary Medicine at UNN
UTME subjectsUse of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
SittingsUNN’s screening form accepts one or two sittings
Direct Entry (route 1)A’level (or HSC or equivalent) passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics, plus a credit in O’level Mathematics
Direct Entry (route 2)UNN’s Higher Diploma in Animal Health and Husbandry, or an equivalent diploma at Merit level, plus O’level credits in Physics and Mathematics
Direct Entry (route 3)A good degree in a relevant science, at least second class lower, plus the basic entry requirements
Minimum UTME to apply160, with UNN as first choice

The Direct Entry routes are from the faculty’s own admission page. UNN’s remark in the JAMB brochure confirms the A’level route: passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics in addition to the UTME requirements. Mathematics is not a UTME subject for this course, but you still need a credit in it at O’level, and Physics is compulsory in both.

I could not open JAMB’s own IBASS brochure from here, so confirm on your JAMB profile before you register.

A quick O’level check before you apply

  • English Language: credit (C6 or better).
  • Mathematics: credit, not a pass.
  • Biology, Chemistry and Physics: credits in all three.
  • Agricultural Science does not replace Biology on the faculty list.
  • Names on WAEC or NECO must match your JAMB record exactly.

UNN screening for 2027/2028: what Veterinary Medicine candidates had to do

UNN did not run a written post-UTME test for 2026/2027. The Registrar’s notice of 13 July 2026 described an online screening registration only, with no test date and no exam format. If a website is selling you “UNN post-UTME past questions for 2026/2027” as preparation for Veterinary Medicine, know that the official notice did not mention any paper.

The portal route was unn.edu.ng, then UNN Portal at the top right (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. You entered your JAMB registration number, generated and paid the invoice, came back to fill personal and O’level details (including centre and exam numbers), uploaded your documents, reviewed, submitted and printed the acknowledgement slip. The notice warned that date of birth cannot be changed after submission.

The window is closed. If you did not register by 5 August 2026, UNN cannot consider you for 2026/2027, whatever your score.

How UNN ranks Veterinary Medicine candidates (aggregate example)

UNN has not published its aggregate formula. Neither the 2026/2027 screening notice nor the 2025/2026 advert notice gives weights or grade points. The 2025/2026 advert notice did refer to a separate screening score with a 160 threshold, but it did not say how that score is worked out.

Several Nigerian education blogs describe the same method, and it is the one you will see most often: 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score built from four relevant subjects, where A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat the example below as an illustration of that blog method. It is not an official UNN formula.

StepWorking
UTME score255
O’level: English LanguageB3 = 80
O’level: BiologyB2 = 90
O’level: ChemistryB3 = 80
O’level: PhysicsC4 = 70
O’level total (out of 400)320
60% of UTME255 × 0.6 = 153
40% of O’level320 × 0.4 = 128
Aggregate (out of 400)153 + 128 = 281

That candidate reaches 281 out of 400 on the blog method. Moving Physics from C4 to B2 adds 20 O’level points, which is 8 aggregate points, the same as about 13 UTME marks. In a course where many applicants have similar UTME scores, your science grades can decide where you land. UNN has not confirmed which four subjects it counts, so use this only as a rough guide.

Merit, catchment and ELDS for Veterinary Medicine at UNN

UNN is a federal university, so it works under the federal admission guideline that is widely reported as 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split for any course, so read that as the national policy rather than a UNN figure.

  • Merit: the top scorers in the course, from any state, fill this list first. It is where the highest cut-off sits.
  • Catchment: UNN has not published its catchment list. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you count on it.
  • ELDS: this is a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own ELDS list, and I would not rely on any blog that names states “for UNN”.
  • State of origin: the state on your JAMB profile is what counts, and UNN asks for an LGA identification letter as proof during screening.

Veterinary Medicine has fewer places than most UNN courses, so the merit list fills with high scorers from across the country. A South-East candidate who misses merit may still be considered on catchment, but the catchment line for a professional course is still high. UNN has not said how many DVM places it has for 2026/2027.

What score should you aim for in Veterinary Medicine at UNN?

My advice (not a UNN figure): aim for 250 or more in the UTME, and 260 or more if your O’level science grades are mostly C4 to C6 or you are applying from outside the South-East. A candidate in the low 240s with strong grades and a catchment state can still be in the conversation.

Your UTME scoreMy reading for Veterinary Medicine at UNN
Below 160Not eligible for UNN screening
160 to 199Eligible to apply, but very unlikely for Veterinary Medicine; plan a second choice
200 to 239Weak for this course; consider Animal Science or a related course
240 to 259Competitive, especially with B-grade sciences or a catchment state
260 and aboveStrong position on merit

If you fall short, ask whether UNN will offer you a related course. A Transfer Approval on CAPS may move you to another course in the same broad area, and you must respond to it. Animal Science in the Faculty of Agriculture is the course closest to Veterinary Medicine in subject matter.

Step by step: from JAMB profile to resuming for Veterinary Medicine at UNN

Warning

JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept an admission offer on CAPS. An offer left unaccepted after that can be withdrawn and given to someone else, so check CAPS every few days once UNN starts releasing lists.

  1. Get or recover your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with your profile code, which you need for registration and other JAMB services.
  2. Make UNN your first choice: UNN screens only candidates who chose it first. If you are planning for 2027, pick UNN and Veterinary Medicine at registration so you do not pay for a change of institution later.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result has to show on your JAMB profile. For 2026/2027 UNN asked for the upload to CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. A JAMB-accredited CBT centre can do the CAPS upload for you.
  4. Register for UNN screening: when the next notice comes out, fill the form on unnportal.unn.edu.ng, pay through Remita and print your acknowledgement slip.
  5. Check CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS and Admission Status. On a phone, switch your browser to desktop view first.
  6. Accept or reject: read the course name carefully, then click Accept. If you see a Transfer Approval, UNN is offering you a different course, and you must respond to that before anything else.
  7. Print your JAMB admission letter and pay acceptance: after CAPS, pay UNN’s acceptance fee on the UNN portal. Blogs report it as ₦25,000, but I found no official 2026/2027 figure, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay.
  8. Clearance: follow your faculty’s clearance instructions with your original documents. Nobody can “secure” a place for you on CAPS for money.

UNN’s homepage already carries 2026/2027 notices for its primary admission list, its Direct Entry list and lists for candidates with disabilities and foreign candidates, and Myschool reported on 25 October 2026 that the list is checkable on CAPS. JAMB also told public universities to conclude 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status message you may see.

Studying Veterinary Medicine at UNN

UNN’s veterinary school has a long history. The faculty says it began with a Higher Diploma in Animal Health and Husbandry in 1963. The DVM started in 1966/67, was disrupted by the civil war, and was revived in 1970 with an intake of about twenty students. It became a full faculty in 1980, and around 2004 three new departments were created after recommendations from the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) and NUC accreditation teams. The faculty, on the Nsukka campus, also runs a Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The DVM runs for a minimum of six years for UTME entrants and five years for Direct Entry. The first year is a pre-professional year of basic sciences, followed by five professional years (DVM I to V).

StageWhat you study
Pre-professional yearBasic sciences: biology, chemistry, physics and general studies
Early professional yearsVeterinary anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology
Middle professional yearsPathology, microbiology, parasitology and entomology, animal health and production
Final professional yearsVeterinary medicine, surgery, obstetrics and reproductive diseases, public health and preventive medicine, clinics and a project

The faculty lists its subject areas without splitting them into years, so treat the grouping above as a rough order rather than UNN’s timetable. Its departments include Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology, Parasitology and Entomology, Pathology and Microbiology, Medicine, Surgery, Animal Health and Production, Obstetrics and Reproductive Diseases, and Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

To practise as a veterinarian in Nigeria you must register with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria after graduation. DVM graduates work in private clinics, poultry, fish and livestock farms, food safety and meat inspection, disease control and public health, animal feed and drug companies, research institutes, the armed forces and universities.

Related UNN courses: UNN Animal Science, UNN Medicine and Surgery, UNN Microbiology and UNN Biochemistry. For UTME revision, see our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Common mistakes Veterinary Medicine applicants make

  • No Physics in the UTME: it is required alongside Biology and Chemistry.
  • A pass in O’level Mathematics: Mathematics is not a UTME subject here, but UNN still needs a credit.
  • Agricultural Science in place of Biology: the faculty asks for Biology.
  • Targeting 200: that is UNN’s declared benchmark, not the score that wins a DVM place.
  • Choosing UNN second: UNN screens first-choice candidates only.

UNN cut off mark for Veterinary Medicine: frequently asked questions

Is 230 enough for Veterinary Medicine in UNN?

It clears every published minimum, but it is on the low side for a professional course like this. With strong science grades and a South-East state of origin you may be considered; for a safer position, aim for 250 or more.

How many years is Veterinary Medicine in UNN?

A minimum of six years for UTME entrants, made up of a pre-professional year and five professional years, and five years for Direct Entry candidates.

Is Mathematics required for Veterinary Medicine in UNN?

Not in the UTME, which is English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You do need a credit in O’level Mathematics.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN Veterinary Medicine?

No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting results were not eligible, and O’level results had to be on CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum, screening dates, fees, eligibility rules and portal steps come from the UNN Registrar’s notice 2026/2027 Screening Exercise for Admission of 13 July 2026. The reported 200 comes from Vanguard’s 11 May 2026 report on the JAMB policy meeting (via AllAfrica), and the national 150 minimum, the 31 October admission deadline and the four-week CAPS acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria. The 2025/2026 figure of 160 and the vacancy counts come from reprints of UNN’s October 2025 advert notice. The UTME and O’level rules and Direct Entry routes come from the admission pages of UNN’s veterinary departments (for example vetparasitology.unn.edu.ng), the six-year length and pre-professional year from vetanimalhealth.unn.edu.ng, and the faculty history from vetmed.unn.edu.ng. UNN’s Direct Entry remark comes from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure; JAMB’s IBASS brochure could not be opened. The Medicine and Pharmacy figures are unofficial blog estimates. The 45/35/20 quota is national policy, not a UNN figure. The aggregate method is a blog method, and the ₦25,000 acceptance fee is an unofficial report. Checked on 29 October 2026.
