ABSU Home Economics Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Home Economics Education is 150 in the UTME. See the JAMB course name, subjects, ABSU’s lighter O’level remark, Direct Entry, NUC full status (2028), a safe target and screening steps.

The ABSU Home Economics Education cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Home Economics Education, so 150 gets you into screening and your O’level grades carry the rest.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

On JAMB the course is listed as Home Economics and Education. It is a science-based teaching degree: the UTME needs Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science, and ABSU’s own O’level remark is gentler than the general brochure line. NUC’s latest result for the programme is full accreditation, maturity date 2028. Below are the exact rules, a safe target score, the screening steps and the careers.

ABSU gave one figure for all courses. A “departmental cut-off” for Home Economics Education on any website did not come from an ABSU document. The real cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted, and ABSU keeps that to itself.

Safe target score for Home Economics Education at ABSU (my advice)

Home Economics Education is one of the less crowded science courses. Most candidates who write Chemistry and Biology are chasing Nursing, Medicine or Medical Laboratory Science, and some end up here after missing those. The table is my own reading, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Home Economics Education
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 159Eligible; clean O’level credits will carry you
160 to 179A good chance
180 and aboveStrong

I would aim for 160 or more. If you scored in the 150s and wrote Chemistry and Biology for a health course, a change of course into Home Economics Education is a realistic way to stay at ABSU this session.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Home Economics Education at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBHome Economics and Education
UTME (general line)Use of English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and one other subject
UTME (ABSU remark)None
O’level (general line)Five credits (or NTC/NBC credits or TC II merit) including English, Mathematics, Home Economics, Biology and Chemistry
O’level (ABSU remark)“ABSU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Chemistry and any two (2) other subjects”
Direct Entry (general line)NCE merit in Home Economics; or A-level passes in two of Chemistry or any of Biology, Botany and Agricultural Science; or ND/HND credit in Home Economics, Food Science, Hotel and Catering Management or a related programme
Direct Entry (ABSU remark)None

For the UTME I would write Use of English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics as the “one other subject”. The brochure leaves the fourth subject open, but a science keeps Nursing, Food Science and Biology Education available if you change course. If your fourth strong subject is Economics, that also fits the general line.

ABSU’s O’level remark versus the general line

The general brochure line wants credits in Home Economics, Biology and Chemistry together. ABSU’s remark is lighter: English, Mathematics, Biology or Chemistry, and any two other subjects. In practice this means a candidate with a Biology credit but no Chemistry credit can still qualify at ABSU, and Home Economics, Foods and Nutrition or Clothing and Textiles count as “other subjects”. Since the UTME still needs Chemistry, I would have a Chemistry credit if you can, but you are not shut out without it.

Direct Entry

No ABSU remark limits Direct Entry here, and ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice invited Direct Entry candidates with five O’level credits. The general line is wide: an NCE merit in Home Economics, two A-levels, or an ND or HND at credit level in Home Economics, Food Science, Hotel and Catering Management or a related course. Since JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, NCE candidates do not sit the UTME (Nairametrics read it as starting in the 2027 cycle; JAMB’s June 2026 NCE guide applied it in 2026), so an NCE first and Direct Entry later is a real fallback.

How ABSU screens applicants

The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed the 2026/2027 notice. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so these details come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank list came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. With no test described, ABSU has your UTME score and your O’level result in front of it when it ranks you.

Worked example for Home Economics Education candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades shift your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5. This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Adaeze scored 158 with B3 in English, C4 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, B3 in Foods and Nutrition and A1 in Home Management. UTME points: 158 ÷ 8 = 19.75. O’level points: 8 + 7 + 9 + 8 + 10 = 42. Illustrative total: 61.75.
  2. Uchenna scored 176 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Biology, C6 in Chemistry and C6 in Physics. UTME points: 176 ÷ 8 = 22. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 48.
  3. The result: Adaeze leads by 13.75 points despite scoring 18 marks less in the UTME, and her Home Economics subjects count under ABSU’s “any two other subjects”.

How to apply for Home Economics Education at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code comes by SMS.
  2. Register with the right course and subjects: choose Home Economics and Education at Abia State University, with Use of English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and one other subject. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Include English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry if you have them.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: print the payment receipt and completed screening form for clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page, where offers appear first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “secure” a Home Economics Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, note that JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities and that date has now passed, so check CAPS now.

Home Economics Education at ABSU: the programme

The course belongs to ABSU’s College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991. The exact degree title was not shown in any ABSU source I could reach.

What you study

ABSU’s course outline was not available. Home Economics Education in Nigeria usually covers:

  • Foods and nutrition: food science, meal planning, diet in health and illness, and food preparation.
  • Clothing and textiles: fibres and fabrics, pattern drafting, garment construction and fashion.
  • Home management and family studies: consumer education, housing, child development and family resource management.
  • Education courses: psychology, curriculum, teaching methods, evaluation, teaching practice and a final-year project.

Accreditation and duration

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Home Economics with alternating interim and full results over the years, ending on full with a maturity date of 2028. Several ABSU Education programmes, including Guidance and Counselling and Fine Art Education, show denied as their latest result, so this one is in a better position than its neighbours. The degree runs four years from UTME entry in Nigeria; ABSU’s own page confirming this was not available.

Careers

  • Teaching Home Economics, Foods and Nutrition, and Clothing and Textiles in secondary schools, after TRCN registration.
  • Running a catering, fashion or event business.
  • Food service and hospitality roles in hotels and institutions.
  • Community nutrition and family welfare work with government agencies and NGOs.
  • Postgraduate study in home economics, nutrition or education.

For your UTME preparation, use our JAMB Chemistry syllabus and JAMB Biology syllabus. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts. Moving from a health course? Our JAMB change of course guide shows how.

Mistakes that cost Home Economics Education applicants a place

  • No Chemistry in the UTME: it is part of the general line, and ABSU has no remark waiving it.
  • No Mathematics credit: ABSU’s remark names Mathematics among the credits.
  • Neither Biology nor Chemistry at credit: ABSU needs at least one of the two.
  • Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The NCE exemption comes from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (Nairametrics, 11 May 2026) and JAMB’s June 2026 NCE registration guide. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules, including ABSU’s remark, come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Home Economics and Education, linked from ABSU’s JAMB course list. The accreditation record comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
