The ABSU Social Studies Education cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) set 150 as the minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who picked ABSU as first or second choice. It did not publish a separate figure for Social Studies Education, so 150 makes you eligible and your O’level and competition decide the rest.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
On JAMB the course is called Education and Social Studies, and ABSU has its own O’level remark in the JAMB brochure that only asks for a pass in Mathematics. The programme’s latest NUC result is full accreditation with a maturity date of 2029, which is better than many other Education programmes at ABSU. Below you will find the exact subjects, a safe target score, the screening steps and what the degree leads to.

ABSU Social Studies Education cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score ABSU accepted for online screening in any regular degree course (ABSU as first or second choice) | ABSU notice, reprinted by Osilight and Myschool, 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Social Studies Education figure | None published | Blog “departmental cut-off” tables cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
ABSU gave one figure for all courses in 2026/2027. If a website shows you an official ABSU cut-off for Social Studies Education alone, ask where it came from, because ABSU itself never released one. The real cut-off each year is the score of the last person admitted, and ABSU does not publish it.
Safe target score for Social Studies Education at ABSU (my advice)
Education courses at state universities rarely attract the crowds that Law, Nursing or Accountancy do, and many Social Studies Education students first applied for Political Science or Mass Communication. That makes this a moderately competitive course. The table is my reading, not an ABSU rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Social Studies Education |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for screening |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible; good O’level grades matter a lot here |
| 160 to 179 | A fair to good chance with clean credits |
| 180 and above | Strong |
I would aim for 165 or more. If you are changing into this course after missing a more competitive one, a score in the 160s is usually workable, but do it before admission closes and check that your subjects fit (see the next section).
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Social Studies Education at ABSU
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Education and Social Studies |
| UTME (general line) | Use of English plus any three of Christian Religious Knowledge, Economics, Geography or Physics, Government, History and Islamic Religious Studies |
| UTME (ABSU remark) | None |
| O’level (general line) | Five SSCE credits including English Language and two Arts or Social Science subjects |
| O’level (ABSU remark) | “ABSU requires fives (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language plus three (3) other subjects” and an O’level pass in Mathematics |
| Direct Entry (general line) | NCE Social Studies from a recognised college, or two A-level passes in relevant subjects |
| Direct Entry (ABSU remark) | None |
For the UTME I would write Use of English, Government, Economics and CRK. History can replace CRK or Economics. Government and Economics keep Political Science, Sociology and Economics Education within reach if you later need to change course, and both appear in the general line. Physics is allowed only in the Geography or Physics slot, and most arts students will not need it.
Reading ABSU’s O’level remark
The ABSU remark is worded a little oddly (it says “five” credits but lists English plus three subjects), and its useful part is the last line: ABSU asks only for a pass in Mathematics, not a credit. If you have a D7 or E8 in Mathematics, this course is one of the few at ABSU where that will not stop you. To satisfy both the remark and the general line, have credits in English and at least two Arts or Social Science subjects such as Government, Economics, CRS, History, Geography or Civic Education, for five credits in total.
Many universities still look for a Mathematics credit, so a pass helps you at ABSU but may not help elsewhere. If you hope to switch to Economics or Political Science later, a Mathematics credit is still worth getting.
Direct Entry
The brochure has no ABSU remark for Direct Entry here, so the general line applies: NCE in Social Studies or two relevant A-level passes. ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice also invited Direct Entry candidates with five O’level credits. JAMB announced at its May 2026 policy meeting that NCE candidates no longer sit the UTME (Nairametrics read it as starting with the 2027 cycle; JAMB’s own June 2026 NCE guide already applied it in 2026). For you that means an NCE in Social Studies from a college of education, followed by Direct Entry to ABSU, is a real route if you miss the UTME score.
How ABSU screens applicants
The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed the 2026/2027 notice. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so these details come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
| Closing date | Not stated in the reprints |
The bank names were garbled in the reprint, so pay through the options on the ABSU portal. With no written test in the notice, your UTME score and O’level grades are what ABSU ranks you on.
Worked example for Social Studies Education candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5. This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.
- Chinonso scored 162 with B3 in English, B2 in Government, B3 in Economics, A1 in CRS and B3 in Civic Education. UTME points: 162 ÷ 8 = 20.25. O’level points: 8 + 9 + 8 + 10 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 63.25.
- Ifeanyi scored 181 with C6 in English, C5 in Government, C6 in Economics, C6 in CRS and C5 in Civic Education. UTME points: 181 ÷ 8 = 22.63. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 27. Illustrative total: 49.63.
- The result: Chinonso leads by 13.62 points even though Ifeanyi scored 19 more in the UTME.
How to apply for Social Studies Education at ABSU, step by step
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code comes by SMS.
- Register with the right course and subjects: choose Education and Social Studies at Abia State University, with Use of English and three subjects from the list above. ABSU took first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Include English, Mathematics and your Arts or Social Science subjects.
- Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
- Keep your receipts: print the payment receipt and the completed screening form for clearance.
- Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page, where offers appear first.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.
Warning
Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “secure” a Social Studies Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.
JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, note that JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities and that date has now passed, so check CAPS now rather than waiting for a printed list.
Social Studies Education at ABSU: the programme
The course sits in ABSU’s College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991. The exact degree title (B.Sc.(Ed), B.A.(Ed) or B.Ed) was not shown in any ABSU source I could reach.
What you study
ABSU’s course outline was not available. Social Studies Education in Nigeria usually combines two parts:
- Social Studies content: Nigerian society and culture, citizenship, government, population and environment, social problems and nation building.
- Education courses: philosophy and history of education, educational psychology, curriculum, teaching methods, measurement and evaluation.
- Teaching practice: a supervised period teaching in a secondary school.
- Research project: a final-year study, usually on teaching or a social issue.
Accreditation and duration
NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Social Studies with an early interim result followed by four full results, the latest with a maturity date of 2029. That is a clean record. Several other ABSU Education programmes, including Guidance and Counselling and Fine Art Education, show denied as their latest result, so do not assume every Education course is in the same position. The degree runs four years for UTME entrants in Nigeria; ABSU’s own page confirming this was not available.

Mistakes that cost Social Studies Education applicants a place
- Science-heavy UTME subjects: Biology and Chemistry are not in the general line for this course.
- Picking the wrong JAMB course: the course is listed as Education and Social Studies, separate from Education and Political Science or Education and Government.
- Too few Arts or Social Science credits: the general line needs two besides English.
- Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
- Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
- Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
ABSU Social Studies Education: frequently asked questions

Can I get Social Studies Education in ABSU with 160? Yes, it is possible. 160 is above the 150 minimum, and with good credits from one sitting it gives you a fair chance in this course.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The NCE exemption from the UTME comes from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by Nairametrics (11 May 2026) and JAMB’s June 2026 NCE registration guide. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules, including ABSU’s remark, come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Social Studies, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation record comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
