ABSU Cut-Off Mark for Mechanical Engineering 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

ABSU’s minimum for Mechanical Engineering is 150 in the UTME. See a safe target score, the JAMB subjects, O’level and Direct Entry rules, NUC status and the screening and CAPS steps.

The ABSU cut off mark for Mechanical Engineering is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate Mechanical Engineering figure, so 150 only gets you screened. Engineering places are limited, and the candidates who get in usually score well above it.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

ABSU Mechanical Engineering holds full NUC accreditation, with a maturity date of 2028, after an earlier interim result. Its JAMB entry has no ABSU-specific remarks, so the general brochure rules are the ones that apply. Below are the official figures, my safe target score, the exact JAMB subjects, Direct Entry, the screening steps and what the degree leads to.

ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. A website that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Mechanical Engineering alone is quoting a number ABSU never released. The real line each year is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course, and ABSU does not publish it.

Safe target score for Mechanical Engineering at ABSU (my advice)

You are ranked against everyone who chose Mechanical Engineering at ABSU, so 150 is the floor and the real contest happens above it. This table is my advice from how engineering courses behave at state universities in the South East. ABSU has not published anything like it.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Mechanical Engineering
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 179Eligible, but you will need excellent O’level grades and some luck; have a backup course ready
180 to 199A fair chance with strong credits from one sitting
200 to 219Good
220 and aboveStrong

I would aim for 200 or more. If you land between 150 and 180, look early at ABSU’s Industrial Physics (Pure and Industrial Physics on JAMB) or Building Technology. A change of course on JAMB is easier before ABSU starts admitting than after.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Mechanical Engineering at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBMechanical Engineering (listed under Engineering, Environment and Technology on ABSU’s course list)
UTMEUse of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
O’levelFive SSC credits: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and any other science subject
Direct EntryTwo A-level passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics
ABSU-specific remarksNone; ABSU does not appear anywhere on this brochure entry

Your four UTME papers are Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with no alternative. At O’level you need credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus one other science subject. Biology is the usual fifth credit. Further Mathematics, Agricultural Science or Technical Drawing may also be accepted as the fifth subject, but confirm with ABSU first; some universities have remarks that count technical subjects, and ABSU has none.

Mechanical Engineering suits candidates who are strong in Physics and Mathematics and who like seeing how machines work. If Physics is your weakest science, think hard before choosing any engineering course, because it runs through every year of the degree.

Direct Entry

The brochure’s general Direct Entry line asks for two A-level passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Other universities have remarks accepting ND or HND in Mechanical Engineering Technology; ABSU is not in any of them, so its position on polytechnic diplomas for this course is not in the brochure. The 2026/2027 notice says Direct Entry candidates also need the basic five O’level credits. Ask the admissions office about your entry level before you buy a form.

How ABSU screens applicants

The 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. Since the notice describes no written test, ABSU ranks you on two things it already has: your UTME score and your O’level grades. For Mechanical Engineering, your Mathematics and Physics grades will carry a lot of weight.

Worked example for Mechanical Engineering candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you up or down, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Somtochukwu scored 195 with C4 in English, B2 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry and B3 in Biology. UTME points: 195 ÷ 8 = 24.375. O’level points: 7 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 41. Illustrative total: 65.375.
  2. Ifeanyi scored 214 with C6 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C6 in Physics, C6 in Chemistry and C5 in Biology. UTME points: 214 ÷ 8 = 26.75. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 27. Illustrative total: 53.75.
  3. The result: Somtochukwu leads by 11.625 points. Ifeanyi scored 19 marks more in the UTME and still trails, because his O’level was 14 points weaker.

How to apply for Mechanical Engineering at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: choose Mechanical Engineering at Abia State University, with Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. ABSU accepted first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is the safer position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, once your result is out. Check that the upload shows credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other science subject.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and the printout of your completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. An ABSU offer shows on CAPS first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Mechanical Engineering place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 date by which public universities such as ABSU should finish admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.

Mechanical Engineering at ABSU: the programme

ABSU groups its engineering and built environment departments under the College of Engineering and Environmental Studies. The main campus is at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA; Wikipedia places only the College of Law and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the Umuahia campus. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Engineering degrees in Nigeria follow the NUC benchmark, and the first two years are shared across most engineering departments. You can expect:

  • Foundations: engineering mathematics, physics, technical drawing and workshop practice.
  • Mechanics: statics, dynamics, strength of materials and machine design.
  • Thermal and fluids: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and internal combustion engines.
  • Production: manufacturing processes, materials science, metrology and maintenance engineering.
  • Systems: refrigeration and air conditioning, control engineering and computer-aided design.
  • Practical work: workshop practice, laboratory sessions, SIWES industrial training (usually several months in a company) and a final-year design or research project.

Accreditation, degree and duration

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Mechanical Engineering with an interim result followed by full accreditation, with a maturity date of 2028. Accreditation by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) matters too, because COREN registration later depends on it. I found no published COREN report on ABSU’s engineering programmes, so COREN status is not confirmed here; ask the department before you accept. The degree is usually a B.Eng, and five years is the normal length for UTME entrants in Nigerian engineering; ABSU’s own page confirming both was not available.

Careers

  • Maintenance or plant engineer in manufacturing, food processing and breweries.
  • Mechanical engineer in oil and gas, power stations and marine work.
  • Design engineer using CAD for machines, vehicles and equipment.
  • HVAC, refrigeration and building services roles with contractors.
  • Registered engineer status through COREN after the required experience, then consulting or teaching.

If you are weighing other universities, compare this with our UNN Mechanical Engineering, ESUT Mechanical and Production Engineering and SUMAS Mechanical Engineering guides.

For revision, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus covers one of your four papers. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and once results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Mechanical Engineering applicants an ABSU place

  • Stopping at 150: it makes you eligible and nothing more in a crowded engineering course.
  • Wrong fourth UTME subject: Chemistry is compulsory.
  • Relying on Technical Drawing as the fifth science credit without asking: ABSU has no remark that says it counts.
  • Assuming an ND gets you in by Direct Entry: the brochure has no ABSU line on ND or HND for this course.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer.
