ABSU Chemistry Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Chemistry Education is 150 in the UTME. See the JAMB course name, subjects, O’level and Direct Entry rules, the NUC record and the screening steps.

The ABSU Chemistry Education cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Chemistry Education, so 150 gets you screened and your O’level does the rest.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

On JAMB the course is called Education and Chemistry, and that is the name you must pick. Below you will find the subjects the JAMB brochure asks for, a safe target score, the screening steps, and one thing every applicant should check before paying fees: NUC’s latest recorded accreditation result for this course at ABSU is denied.

ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. Any page that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Chemistry Education alone is quoting a number ABSU never released. The real cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted, and ABSU does not publish it.

Safe target score for Chemistry Education at ABSU (my advice)

Science education courses draw fewer applicants than Medicine, Nursing or Computer Science, and many students in them first applied for another course. Competition is usually moderate. The table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Chemistry Education
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 159Eligible; your O’level grades decide most of it
160 to 179A reasonable chance with clean credits
180 and aboveStrong

I would aim for at least 165. Your Chemistry grade matters too: a B3 or better in O’level Chemistry fits a course where you will one day teach the subject.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Chemistry Education at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBEducation and Chemistry
UTMEMyschool’s reprint of this brochure entry has an empty UTME section. JAMB’s usual line for Chemistry teaching courses is Chemistry plus two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure
O’level (general line)Five SSC credits in Mathematics, Chemistry, English Language and two of Physics, Biology and Agricultural Science
O’level (ABSU remark)None
Direct Entry (general line)Two A-level or NCE passes including Chemistry and one other science subject
Direct Entry (ABSU remark)None, and no “No Direct Entry” remark names ABSU

For the UTME I would write Use of English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. That choice mirrors the O’level line, which names Physics and Biology as the subjects that go with Chemistry, and it keeps Integrated Science Education and Biology Education open if you change course. Mathematics in place of Biology also fits JAMB’s usual line. Because Myschool’s copy of the brochure has no UTME text for this course, check the entry on JAMB’s own e-brochure when you register.

O’level checklist

  • English Language: credit
  • Mathematics: credit
  • Chemistry: credit
  • Two of Physics, Biology and Agricultural Science: credits
  • Number of sittings: the brochure line for this course does not state a limit, and ABSU’s notice does not either

Direct Entry

The brochure accepts two A-level passes, or NCE passes, that include Chemistry and one other science. ABSU has no remark on this course, so the general line applies, and none of the “No Direct Entry” remarks on the page mention ABSU. An NCE in Chemistry paired with Biology, Physics or Integrated Science is the usual route for teachers who want a degree. Confirm the entry level (usually 200 level) with ABSU before you buy the Direct Entry form.

NUC accreditation: what the record shows for ABSU Chemistry Education

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 (uploaded in September 2026) lists ABSU’s Education Chemistry with this run of results: Interim, Full, Interim, Full, Denied. The latest entry is Denied, and no maturity date follows it. The extracted text does not line up each result with its year, so I cannot tell you which exercise produced the denial.

A denied result means the programme failed NUC’s minimum standards at its last visit. NUC’s then acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, told the ICIR in February 2024 that a programme that keeps failing can receive an outcome statement that leads to admissions into it being suspended. I found no NUC or ABSU statement saying whether ABSU has since been revisited for Chemistry Education, or whether it admitted new students into it in 2026/2027. The course is still on ABSU’s JAMB course list as of 29 October 2026.

Several ABSU education courses share this result in the same record, including Physics Education, Mathematics Education, Biology Education and Integrated Science. Others are listed as full, such as Business Education, Agricultural Science Education and Education Government (Political Science Education). Before you pay acceptance or school fees, ask the ABSU admissions office or the Faculty of Education in writing whether Chemistry Education is admitting and what its current NUC status is. If it is not admitting, the nearest options at ABSU are Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry (listed by NUC as Chemistry, full) or a Chemistry education course at another university.

How ABSU screens Chemistry Education applicants

The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026). The notice covers every regular degree course, education courses included.

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so pay through the options shown on the ABSU portal itself. Since the notice mentions no written test, ABSU ranks you on what it can see: your UTME score and your O’level grades.

Worked example for Chemistry Education candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you up or down, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Chinonso scored 166 with B3 in English, B3 in Mathematics, A1 in Chemistry, B2 in Biology and C4 in Physics. UTME points: 166 ÷ 8 = 20.75. O’level points: 8 + 8 + 10 + 9 + 7 = 42. Illustrative total: 62.75.
  2. Ugochi scored 182 with C6 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C6 in Chemistry, C5 in Biology and C6 in Physics. UTME points: 182 ÷ 8 = 22.75. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 27. Illustrative total: 49.75.
  3. The result: Chinonso leads by 13 points even though Ugochi scored 16 more in the UTME. Strong O’level grades carry real weight under this kind of method.

How to apply for Chemistry Education at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right course name: pick Education and Chemistry at Abia State University, with Use of English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Make sure English, Mathematics and Chemistry are on the upload, with Physics or Biology.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form for clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Before you pay

NUC’s latest recorded result for ABSU Chemistry Education is Denied. Confirm with ABSU’s admissions office that the course is admitting before you pay any fee, and pay only through the ABSU portal. Every genuine offer appears on JAMB CAPS.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for public universities such as ABSU (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026) and kept that date when it restored CAPS in September (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). JAMB also said in May 2026 that any admission done outside CAPS is illegal, so your CAPS page is the record that counts.

Chemistry Education at ABSU: the programme

ABSU’s education courses sit in the College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991. Chemistry Education trains you to teach Chemistry in secondary schools, so you take Chemistry courses alongside education courses.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. A Chemistry Education degree in Nigeria usually covers:

  • General, physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, with laboratory practicals.
  • Supporting courses in Mathematics, Physics and Biology in the early years.
  • Education foundations: psychology of learning, philosophy and sociology of education.
  • Curriculum and methods: how to plan Chemistry lessons, run a school laboratory safely and assess students.
  • Teaching practice in a secondary school, and a final-year research project.

Degree, duration and teaching practice

Science education degrees in Nigeria are usually awarded as B.Sc (Ed) and run four years for UTME entrants, with Direct Entry students normally starting at 200 level. ABSU’s own page confirming the exact title and duration was not available. Graduates who want to teach also register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

Careers

  • Chemistry teacher in public or private secondary schools.
  • Science teacher or laboratory coordinator in schools and tutorial centres.
  • Exam and curriculum work with education boards and publishers.
  • Laboratory or quality control roles in industry, with further training.
  • Postgraduate study in science education or chemistry.

Revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus and JAMB Biology syllabus. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Chemistry Education applicants an ABSU place

  • Picking “Chemistry” on JAMB: the teaching course is Education and Chemistry, a different JAMB course.
  • No Chemistry credit: the O’level line requires it.
  • Paying fees without checking the course is admitting: NUC’s latest recorded result for it is denied.
  • Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

ABSU Chemistry Education: frequently asked questions

What is the JAMB subject combination for Chemistry Education in ABSU? Use of English and Chemistry plus two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics is JAMB’s usual line. Myschool’s copy of the brochure shows no UTME text for this course, so confirm it on JAMB’s e-brochure.

Is 160 enough for Chemistry Education in ABSU? 160 clears ABSU’s 150 minimum, and with good credits in English, Mathematics and Chemistry it gives you a fair chance in a course with moderate competition.

Is ABSU Chemistry Education accredited? NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list the course with denied as its latest result. Ask ABSU in writing whether it is admitting and what its current status is before paying fees.

Can I enter Chemistry Education at ABSU with NCE? Yes, the JAMB brochure allows Direct Entry with two A-level or NCE passes including Chemistry and one other science, and ABSU has no remark against it.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the confirmation that the deadline stands from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The JAMB course name comes from ABSU’s JAMB course list on Myschool, and the UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Chemistry. Myschool’s copy of that entry shows no UTME line, so the UTME combination given here is JAMB’s usual one and should be confirmed on the e-brochure. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication, and the remarks on non-performing programmes from the ICIR interview with NUC’s Chris Maiyaki (17 February 2024). Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the exact degree title and the duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off, new requirements or a new accreditation result.
