ABSU Industrial Chemistry Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Industrial Chemistry is 150 in the UTME. See the JAMB course name to pick, the subjects, the five O’level credits you need, NUC status, a safe target and the screening steps.

The ABSU Industrial Chemistry cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Industrial Chemistry, so 150 gets you into screening and your O’level carries much of the weight after that.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Before anything else, know the name. On JAMB, ABSU’s course appears as Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, and NUC’s accreditation record lists it as Chemistry. If you search the JAMB portal for “Industrial Chemistry” alone and give up, you may miss it. Below are the official figures, a safe target score, the exact subjects, the O’level trap that catches many science candidates, Direct Entry, screening and careers.

ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. Any page that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Industrial Chemistry alone, for any year, is quoting a figure ABSU itself never released. The practical cut-off each year is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course, and ABSU does not publish it.

Safe target score for Industrial Chemistry at ABSU (my advice)

Industrial Chemistry draws fewer applicants than Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy or Computer Science, and in my experience a share of its applicants are candidates who missed one of those courses. That keeps competition moderate. You are still ranked within the course, and this table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Industrial Chemistry
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 164Eligible; your O’level grades will decide most of it
165 to 184A reasonable chance with clean credits
185 and aboveStrong

I would aim for at least 170. More important, make sure you have all five O’level credits the brochure lists. A strong score does not rescue a missing Biology or Physics credit.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Industrial Chemistry at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBChemistry and Industrial Chemistry
UTMEUse of English, Chemistry, and two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics
O’levelFive SSCE credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Direct Entry (A-level)Two A-level passes in Chemistry and one of Physics, Mathematics or Biology
Direct Entry (diploma)ND or NCE with good grades, plus the relevant O’level subjects
ABSU-specific remarksNone; the only remarks on this entry name IUO

For the UTME, Chemistry is compulsory, and you pick two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics. I would write Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Industrial Chemistry leans on physical chemistry, chemical engineering basics and calculations, so Mathematics and Physics prepare you better than Biology. That said, Chemistry, Biology and Physics is also valid under the brochure, and ABSU has no remark that removes it.

The O’level line is stricter than most candidates expect. It names five specific subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, all at credit level. A candidate with Agricultural Science in place of Biology, or without a Physics credit, does not meet it as written.

Direct Entry

The general Direct Entry line accepts two A-level passes in Chemistry and one of Physics, Mathematics or Biology, or an ND or NCE with good grades in the relevant O’level subjects. ABSU has no remark on this entry. The 2026/2027 notice says Direct Entry candidates also need the basic five O’level credits, and it did not say which level a diploma holder enters. Ask the admissions office before you apply.

How ABSU screens applicants

The 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options shown on the ABSU portal itself rather than a list copied from a blog. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and the quality of your O’level result are the two things ABSU has in front of it when it ranks you.

Worked example for Industrial Chemistry candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Ifeoma scored 172 with B3 in English, B3 in Mathematics, C4 in Physics, B2 in Chemistry and B3 in Biology. UTME points: 172 ÷ 8 = 21.5. O’level points: 8 + 8 + 7 + 9 + 8 = 40. Illustrative total: 61.5.
  2. Kelechi scored 191 with C6 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C6 in Physics, C5 in Chemistry and C6 in Biology. UTME points: 191 ÷ 8 = 23.875. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 27. Illustrative total: 50.875.
  3. The result: Ifeoma leads by 10.625 points. Kelechi scored 19 marks more in the UTME, but weaker credits put him behind. If Kelechi had no Biology credit at all, he would not meet the brochure’s O’level line, whatever his total.

How to apply for Industrial Chemistry at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: choose Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry at Abia State University with Use of English, Chemistry and two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics. ABSU accepted first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, once your result is out. Make sure the upload shows credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and the printout of your completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS before anything else.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Industrial Chemistry place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.

Industrial Chemistry at ABSU: the programme

Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry sits in ABSU’s College of Biological and Physical Sciences on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.

Pure Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry?

The JAMB course name combines both, and NUC’s record lists one programme called Chemistry. I could not find an ABSU page that says whether graduates receive B.Sc Chemistry, B.Sc Industrial Chemistry, or choose an option in later years. Ask the department during clearance, because the name on your certificate can matter when you apply for jobs in manufacturing.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry degrees in Nigeria usually cover:

  • Core chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry across all years.
  • Industrial side: chemical technology, unit operations, polymer and petroleum chemistry, and quality control.
  • Support courses: mathematics, physics and instrumental methods such as spectroscopy and chromatography.
  • Laboratory work: weekly practicals and safety training.
  • Practical year: SIWES industrial training and a final-year research project.

Accreditation, degree and duration

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Chemistry with full status as its latest result and a maturity date of 2026, which means the programme is due for its next NUC visit around now. No programme called Industrial Chemistry appears separately for ABSU in that record. Four years is the normal length for UTME entrants in Nigerian chemistry degrees; ABSU’s own page confirming the duration was not available.

Careers

  • Quality control and production chemist in food, beverage, paint, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and plastics factories.
  • Laboratory analyst in oil and gas, water treatment and environmental testing.
  • Regulatory roles with agencies that test products and enforce standards.
  • Chemistry teacher, after a teaching qualification.
  • Postgraduate study in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science.

For revision, use our JAMB Chemistry syllabus, and if Biology is one of your UTME subjects, our JAMB Biology syllabus. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Industrial Chemistry applicants an ABSU place

  • Searching for the wrong name on JAMB: pick Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.
  • Leaving out Chemistry in the UTME: it is the one compulsory subject besides English.
  • Missing a Biology or Physics credit: the O’level line names both.
  • Assuming Agricultural Science replaces Biology: the brochure does not say so for this course.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

ABSU Industrial Chemistry: frequently asked questions

What is the JAMB course name for Industrial Chemistry in ABSU? Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. That is how the course appears on ABSU’s JAMB course list.

Can I write Biology instead of Mathematics in JAMB for Industrial Chemistry in ABSU? Yes. The brochure asks for Chemistry plus two of Physics, Biology and Mathematics, so Chemistry, Biology and Physics is valid. Mathematics and Physics prepare you better for the industrial side.

Do I need Biology in O’level for Industrial Chemistry at ABSU? Yes. The brochure names five credits: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Is 165 enough for Industrial Chemistry in ABSU? 165 clears the 150 minimum, so you can be screened. With clean credits from one sitting it is workable, but I would aim for 170 or more.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
