The Spiritan University English and Literary Studies cut-off mark you should plan with is 150 in the UTME, which is JAMB’s minimum for universities for 2026/2027. Spiritan University, Nneochi has not published its own 2026/2027 cut-off or a separate figure for English in any source I could reach, so 150 is the floor and anything above it is my advice, not an official figure.
2027/2028 update: Spiritan University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
There is one thing to get right before anything else: the course name. On JAMB’s course list for Spiritan University, you register English Language, not “English and Literary Studies”. Spiritan’s own 2026/2027 programme list, on its admissions page, does not show English and Literary Studies at all; the nearest degree it lists is B.A. Language and Linguistics. Before you pay for any form or fee, call the Registrar’s line, 0703 986 5805, and ask which degree an English Language candidate is admitted into.
Spiritan also sets one rule for every programme: five O’level credits in no more than two sittings, with English and Mathematics compulsory. Below you will find JAMB’s subject rules, a safe target score, what is known about Spiritan’s screening and fees, the CAPS steps and the parts Spiritan has not confirmed.
Spiritan University English and Literary Studies cut-off mark: what is confirmed
| Item | Position | Source or status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum for universities (2026/2027) | 150 | JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| Spiritan University declared cut-off (2026/2027) | Not published | Spiritan is absent from News Central’s list of declared 2026 cut-offs; no official notice found |
| Cut-off for English alone | Not published | No course-level figure in any source |
| Course name | Register “English Language” on JAMB; Spiritan’s own 2026/2027 list names the degree “B.A. Language and Linguistics” and does not list English and Literary Studies. Confirm with the Registrar (0703 986 5805) which degree you would be admitted into | Myschool reprint of JAMB’s course list for Spiritan (17 courses); Spiritan admissions page |
| Spiritan’s UTME rule | At least the national cut-off score (no separate figure) | Spiritan admissions page |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject and one Arts or Social Science subject | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| O’level | Five credits in no more than two sittings, with English and Mathematics compulsory (Spiritan’s rule for every programme), plus Literature in English and other Arts or Social Science subjects | Spiritan admissions page; JAMB brochure |
| NUC accreditation | Visited in December 2021; full or interim not stated for English | Myschool report, 9 May 2022 |
Spiritan University is a private Catholic university at Nneochi in Abia State, owned by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans). The Committee of Vice-Chancellors lists it as founded in 2017. Its language degree sits in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences. For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities.
Spiritan English cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official: JAMB 2026 policy meeting |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | JAMB 2025 policy meeting |
| 2022/2023 | 140 | Minimum UTME score for candidates choosing Spiritan, as reported | Blog report (SchoolNGR, September 2022), not an official reprint |
You may find blog pages labelled “2026/2027” with Spiritan screening dates and a 150 minimum. The one I checked carries page data from 2022, gives a start date of “Monday 19 September 2026” (that day is a Saturday), and quotes no Spiritan notice. I would not rely on any of its dates.
Safe target score for English at Spiritan (my advice)
Spiritan is a small, young university, and Arts courses at private universities in the South East seldom fill well above the national minimum. The bands below are my reading of that; Spiritan has published nothing on them.
| Your UTME score | My read for Spiritan English |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Below JAMB’s 2026 minimum for universities |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible; complete Arts credits and an early application matter most |
| 160 to 179 | Good chance |
| 180 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 160 or more. It gives you a margin if Spiritan sets a screening test, and it keeps other universities open as a backup.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Spiritan English and Literary Studies
Spiritan’s admissions page sets the general O’level rule for all programmes but gives no subject list for the language degree, so plan the subjects with JAMB’s brochure entry for English Language, which is the entry Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s Spiritan list points to. That entry carries no remark for Spiritan.
| Requirement | What applies | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Course name to select on JAMB | English Language (Spiritan University) | JAMB course list for Spiritan, Myschool reprint |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subject | JAMB brochure |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language, Literature in English and three other Arts or Social Science subjects | JAMB brochure |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject | JAMB brochure |
| Spiritan-specific rules (sittings, Mathematics) | Five credits in no more than two sittings (WASSCE or NECO), with English and Mathematics compulsory for every programme | Spiritan admissions page, 2026/2027 |
Register Use of English, Literature in English, CRS and Government. Literature is the subject you cannot drop. CRS counts as the second Arts subject, and Government covers the Arts or Social Science slot. History is a good swap for either if you took it.
JAMB’s general O’level rule for English does not ask for Mathematics, but Spiritan’s does. Its admissions page requires five credits in no more than two sittings, with English and Mathematics compulsory for every programme, and that rule overrides JAMB’s general line. Your five credits should therefore include English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English, plus two Arts or Social Science subjects such as CRS, Government or History.
Direct Entry into English at Spiritan
JAMB accepts two A-level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject, plus the O’level credits above. Spiritan has published nothing on whether it also accepts NCE, ND or JUPEB for English, or at what level Direct Entry students start. Ask the admissions office in writing before buying a Direct Entry form.
Spiritan University Post-UTME screening for English
Spiritan’s 2026/2027 screening details are not available from any official source I could reach. Here is what earlier cycles show:
- For 2022/2023, SchoolNGR reported a Post-UTME screening for candidates with 140 or more and a non-refundable acceptance fee of N20,000.
- For 2024/2025, Myschool reported on 3 July 2024 that Spiritan had opened admission for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including transfers from other universities, and listed B.A. English in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences. The report gave no form fee, portal or test date.
Spiritan has published no aggregate formula and no current form fee. Expect some form of screening, and get the date and fee from the university itself.
Worked example (illustrative only)
To show how a typical 50:50 aggregate works at Nigerian universities (UTME score divided by 8, plus half the screening percentage), here are three candidates. Spiritan has not said it uses this method; it is my illustration.
- Chinonso: UTME 168 and 60% at screening. 168 divided by 8 is 21; half of 60 is 30. Her illustrative aggregate is 51.
- Ikenna: UTME 153 (19.125) and 78% at screening (39). His aggregate is 58.125, ahead of Chinonso with 15 fewer UTME marks.
- Oluchi: UTME 190, but no credit in Literature in English. JAMB’s brochure names Literature as a required credit, so she needs it before she can be admitted for English.
Spiritan University English school fees
I found no official Spiritan fee schedule for 2026/2027. The only figure in circulation is the N20,000 acceptance fee reported for 2022/2023, which is several years old. Ask the bursary for the current acceptance fee, tuition for English, hostel and other charges, and get the account details from the university directly.
Confirm before paying
Spiritan’s admissions page shows 2026/2027 admission in progress but states no form fee, acceptance fee or school fees, and it does not list English and Literary Studies. Call the Registrar on 0703 986 5805 to confirm before you pay for any form or fee, and accept only an offer that appears on your JAMB CAPS.
How to apply for English at Spiritan University, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
- Register for the UTME: choose Spiritan University and the course “English Language”, with Use of English, Literature in English, CRS and Government. If Spiritan was not your choice, do a JAMB change of institution before admission closes.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre, with your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB details. No university can offer you admission without it.
- Get Spiritan’s screening details: use the Spiritan admissions page for the current form, and call the Registrar on 0703 986 5805 to confirm the fee, the test date and which degree an English Language candidate is admitted into.
- Write the screening and check your status: keep your screening slip and watch both Spiritan’s list and your JAMB CAPS.
- Accept on CAPS: on efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: pay only into an account the university gives you directly, then bring your original documents for clearance.
Studying English and Literary Studies at Spiritan University
Spiritan’s programme name varies by source. Admissions blogs call it B.A. English and Literary Studies, Myschool’s 2024 report of the admission advert lists “B.A. English”, and JAMB lists “English Language”. Spiritan’s own 2026/2027 programme list has none of these; its only language degree in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences is B.A. Language and Linguistics. Spiritan has not said whether that degree replaced English, so confirm with the Registrar before you accept. Spiritan has not published the duration; a B.A. in Nigeria usually runs four years, or three through Direct Entry.
Is English at Spiritan University accredited?
English was one of ten Spiritan programmes the NUC visited for accreditation in December 2021, according to a Myschool report of 9 May 2022. Seven of the ten got full accreditation and three interim, but the report does not say which programmes got which. Myschool’s 2024 report also says the university holds a permanent licence from the NUC. Ask the department for English’s current NUC status and the year it matures before you accept an offer.
What you will study
Spiritan has not put its English outline online. English and Literary Studies degrees in Nigeria usually cover:
- Language: phonetics and phonology, English grammar and syntax, semantics, and the use of English in Nigeria.
- Literature: poetry, prose and drama, African and Nigerian literature, and British and American literature.
- Theory and skills: literary criticism, stylistics, creative writing and research methods, ending with a final-year project.
Graduates teach, edit and write for publishers and media houses, work in public relations, advertising and communications, and join the civil service. Some go on to law or a master’s degree in literature or linguistics.

Mistakes English applicants make
- Looking for the wrong name on JAMB: choose “English Language” under Spiritan University, then confirm with Spiritan which degree that leads to.
- Skipping Mathematics: Spiritan requires an O’level credit in Mathematics for every programme, English included.
- Leaving out Literature in English: JAMB requires it in the UTME and the O’level.
- Trusting recycled blog dates: some “2026/2027” pages carry old text with wrong weekdays.
- Paying before confirming: get the form fee and account from the university itself.
