NOHE College of Nursing Sciences Basic Midwifery admission requirements are the same as for its general nursing course: you must be 16 or older and hold credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at no more than two sittings of WAEC, NECO or GCE, or one sitting of NABTEB. Basic midwifery is a direct-entry course for school leavers, so you do not need to be a nurse first. Shortlisted candidates write an entrance exam in the five subjects and attend an interview. The college, at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu (NOHE), has not published a cut-off mark.
2027/2028 update: NOHE Basic Midwifery admission requirements and entrance exam process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest adverts we could find (the 2024/2025 call and the 2023 exam timetable). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Good news on accreditation: the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) list dated December 2025 shows NOHE’s Midwifery programme with full accreditation from October 2023. The college has not posted a 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 advert that I could find, so the fee and dates below are the last known pattern. Confirm them with the college before you pay.

Basic midwifery or nursing first? How NOHE differs from UNTH
Many Enugu candidates confuse the two routes into midwifery. NOHE runs basic midwifery, which you can enter straight from secondary school. UNTH’s School of Midwifery runs only post-basic midwifery, which is open to registered nurses. If you have just finished WAEC and want to be a midwife, NOHE’s route is the one that fits you.
| Point | NOHE Basic Midwifery | UNTH School of Midwifery |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level | School leavers with five credits | Registered nurses only |
| Age rule | 16 and above | Not applicable |
| NMCN status (Dec 2025 list) | Full, October 2023 | Full, January 2021 |
| Leads to | Registration as a midwife | Additional registration as a midwife |
Read our UNTH School of Midwifery admission requirements guide if you are already a nurse.
Do you need JAMB for NOHE Basic Midwifery?
The college’s adverts say nothing about JAMB, and a blog editor told a reader in February 2024 that NOH Enugu did not require it. Since then, JAMB has set a separate national minimum for colleges of nursing such as NOHE’s: 140 for 2025 and 150 for 2026. The National Orthopaedic Hospital’s college in Igbobi, Lagos, also screened its 2023 nursing candidates with a minimum UTME score of 150.
| Session | JAMB minimum for colleges of nursing | NOHE midwifery figure |
|---|---|---|
| 2025/2026 | 140 | None published |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | None published |
Safe target score (consultant advice)
My advice, not a college figure: sit the 2027 UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and aim for 170 or more. That clears the 150 floor, matches the entrance exam subjects, and keeps nursing at other colleges open as a backup. If NOHE confirms it admits without JAMB, your UTME practice still prepares you for its entrance exam.
Requirements explained, with the edge cases
Age
You must be 16 at the time you apply. NOHE asks for a birth certificate or a sworn declaration of age, and it does not accept a baptismal card. If you have neither, get a declaration of age from a court registry well before the form opens. The adverts set no upper age limit.
O’level credits
All five subjects need a credit. Physics is compulsory even though midwifery is not a physics-heavy course, so do not skip it. WAEC, NECO and GCE results can be combined across two sittings. NABTEB counts only as one sitting on its own.
Married applicants
NOHE asks married candidates for a marriage certificate. This usually matters when your name on your certificates differs from your current name. Bring the certificate so the college can match your documents.
Full document checklist
- Birth certificate or declaration of age.
- Testimonial from your last school.
- Marriage certificate, if married.
- Recent passport photographs.
- NIN slip, voter’s card, driver’s licence or international passport.
- O’level result(s) in original and photocopy, and your UTME result slip if you sat the exam.
NOHE Basic Midwifery entrance exam and form
NOHE sells one form for its basic nursing and basic midwifery courses. The last advert with full details was for the 2023 intake:
| Stage | 2023 intake |
|---|---|
| Fee | N16,500 into the NOH Enugu TSA account through Remita |
| Payment description | “College of Nursing Science Form”, via the College Bursar or remita.net |
| Form sale | From 2 October 2023 at the College of Nursing Complex, NOH Enugu (registrar’s office, 8am to 4pm on weekdays) |
| Closing date | 30 October 2023 |
| Exam and interview | 1 to 7 November 2023, from 9am |
| Enquiries | 08033170239, 08037748259 |
The 2024/2025 call was reprinted in June 2024, so the college’s timing has varied between mid-year and October. For the 2027/2028 intake I would watch from May 2027 and visit the college if nothing appears online.
How to prepare for the exam
- English: comprehension, lexis and structure, and short essays.
- Mathematics: SSCE arithmetic, percentages, ratios, simple algebra and statistics.
- Biology: human reproduction, nutrition, cells, genetics and diseases. Use our JAMB Biology syllabus as a checklist.
- Chemistry and Physics: SSCE basics. Our JAMB Chemistry syllabus covers the chemistry side.
At the interview, expect questions on why you chose midwifery over nursing, how you handle blood and night duty, and what you know about antenatal care.
Worked example (illustrative)
- Applicant: Chidinma, 17, has WAEC 2026 credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry, but a pass in Physics.
- Problem: Physics is one of the five required credits, so she does not yet qualify.
- Fix: she writes NECO GCE and earns a credit in Physics. Two sittings, all five credits.
- JAMB: she also sits the 2027 UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and scores 185.
- Result: she is eligible for NOHE whether or not the college uses JAMB, and she can also apply to other colleges of nursing.
How to apply for NOHE Basic Midwifery, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text your NIN to 55019 or 66019 from your own line, then register for the UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Choose the college if listed: if NOH Enugu’s College of Nursing Sciences is on JAMB’s list for midwifery or nursing, select it. Our JAMB change of institution guide helps if you need to switch.
- Upload your O’level: have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded at an accredited CBT centre so it shows on CAPS.
- Buy the NOHE form: pay through Remita into the NOH Enugu TSA account as the advert instructs, then fill the form and pick Basic Midwifery as your programme.
- Write the exam and attend the interview: carry all documents in original and photocopy.
- Accept the offer: if it appears on JAMB CAPS, accept it there; see our JAMB CAPS guide.
- Pay acceptance and school fees: pay only the amounts on your admission letter into the hospital’s official account.
Before you pay
Pages headlined “NOHE midwifery form 2026” often repeat the 2023 dates. Pay only through Remita to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, as the current official advert directs, and never into a private account.
About Basic Midwifery at NOHE
Basic midwifery trains you to care for women through pregnancy, labour and the weeks after birth, and to look after newborns. Expect anatomy and physiology, normal and abnormal pregnancy, labour management, family planning, newborn care, community midwifery and pharmacology, with postings in antenatal clinics and labour wards. NOHE is an orthopaedic hospital, so ask at interview where midwifery students do their labour ward postings. NOHE has not published the programme’s length; basic midwifery in Nigeria has traditionally run for three years.
Accreditation
The NMCN’s December 2025 list shows the College of Nursing Sciences, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu with Midwifery: Full (October 2023). The council says full accreditation lasts five years, which takes it to about October 2028. Older lists from 2022 did not include NOHE’s basic programmes, so blogs that say the course is unaccredited are out of date.
Careers for midwives
- Midwife in hospital maternity units, labour wards and antenatal clinics.
- Primary health care and community midwifery services.
- Maternal and child health programmes run by government and NGOs.

Sources and updates
The programme list, age, O’level and document rules come from NOHE’s 2024/2025 advert as reprinted by Myschool (16 June 2024). The fee, payment route, 2023 dates, exam subjects, contacts and the reader comment on JAMB come from the 2023 advert as reprinted by Studentship (8 March 2024). Accreditation is from the NMCN list of approved schools (December 2025).
