The CCU cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science is 150 in the UTME, the minimum JAMB set for every Nigerian university for 2026/2027. Coal City University, Enugu has not published a separate cut-off for Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS), and it did not declare its own figure at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting. Because this is a health course with more applicants than places, I would not plan on 150; my safe target is further down.
2027/2028 update: CCU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Medical Laboratory Science is on JAMB’s course list for Coal City University as Medical Laboratory Science, and CCU’s Faculty of Health Sciences page lists the B.MLS degree beside Nursing Science, Radiography and Radiation Science, and Physiotherapy. The NUC has accredited it on an interim basis, which I explain below. I could not confirm approval by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), the body that registers graduates, so that is the question to settle with CCU before paying. Subjects, O’level rules, screening, a worked example, a safe target score and the CAPS steps follow.

Safe target score for Medical Laboratory Science at CCU (my advice)
CCU does not publish the score of the last candidate it admitted, so this table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. Medical Laboratory Science attracts many candidates who missed Medicine or Nursing, and the NUC caps each programme’s intake. I would not expect a programme still on interim accreditation to take a large class.
| Your UTME score | My read for CCU Medical Laboratory Science |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible through UTME |
| 150 to 179 | Eligible, but a gamble; have a backup such as Microbiology or Biochemistry at CCU |
| 180 to 209 | A fair chance with five clean science credits and an early application |
| 210 and above | Strong; ESUT (200) is also open to you |
For a 2027 candidate I would aim for at least 190, with credits of B3 or better in Biology and Chemistry.
UTME subject combination and O’level for Medical Laboratory Science at CCU
The JAMB brochure entry for Medical Laboratory Science carries no CCU remark, so the general rules apply.
| Requirement | Medical Laboratory Science at CCU |
|---|---|
| JAMB course name to register | Medical Laboratory Science (Coal City University) |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| O’level | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (CCU has not published its own list) |
| Sittings | Not stated by CCU; many universities insist on one or two at most for health courses |
| Direct Entry | A-level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology) |
| Duration | Five years is the usual length of the B.MLS; CCU has not stated it |
No room to swap subjects
The UTME combination is fixed: Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English. Mathematics cannot replace Physics for this course under JAMB’s general rule, even though a few universities (Babcock, for example) accept it. If you registered Mathematics in place of Physics, you do not qualify for MLS at CCU, but you may still fit CCU’s Microbiology or Biochemistry.
O’level: five named credits
All five subjects are named, so there is no free choice. A credit in Agricultural Science or Further Mathematics does not replace a missing Physics, Chemistry or Biology credit. Check each grade before you pay for the CCU form.
Direct Entry
The general rule asks for A-level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology). Many universities also accept a diploma or Associate of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Science (AIMLS) for Direct Entry, but the brochure records no such remark for CCU, so ask CCU before registering Direct Entry with anything other than A-levels. CCU advertised JUPEB and IJMB for 2026/2027, and its health sciences notice in 2023 pointed low-score candidates to its JUPEB programme.
How CCU screens Medical Laboratory Science applicants
CCU has not published its 2026/2027 screening details in any source I could reach.
| Detail | What is known for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|
| Advert | CCU invited applications for undergraduate programmes (Myschool reprint, 18 May 2026) |
| Applicant groups | UTME, Direct Entry and transfer candidates (AbsTechConnect, May 2026) |
| Portal | portal.ccu.edu.ng |
| Form fee | ₦2,000 according to AbsTechConnect; not confirmed by CCU |
| Test, date and format | Not published |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
| Other routes | JUPEB, IJMB and pre-degree forms advertised for 2026/2027 |
Worked example (illustrative)
CCU has published no aggregate method, so this example checks your margins and your O’level only.
Take Somto, who scored 194 with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Her WAEC (one sitting) has B3 in English Language, B2 in Mathematics, C4 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry, B2 in Biology and C5 in Agricultural Science.
- Eligibility: 194 minus 150 = 44 above JAMB’s minimum.
- Against my target: 194 minus 190 = 4 above it.
- O’level check: all five named subjects at credit in one sitting. She qualifies.
- Next step: apply on the CCU portal early, upload her result to CAPS and accept as soon as CCU proposes her. I would also have her ask CCU about MLSCN approval before paying acceptance.
Compare Kelechi, who scored 212 but has D7 in Physics. His score is excellent, yet the missing Physics credit fails the O’level rule. He should rewrite Physics in a NECO or WAEC GCE sitting, or apply for a course that does not need a Physics credit.
Admission odds and advice
- Competition is the real cut-off: with a 150 floor and limited places, early applicants with high scores and clean results fill the quota.
- Expect a small class: I would not expect an interim-accredited programme to admit large numbers.
- Have a backup at CCU: Microbiology and Biochemistry use similar subjects and both hold NUC full accreditation.
- Make CCU first choice: or use JAMB change of institution before CCU proposes candidates.
- Dates: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for private universities, and the overall 2026/2027 admission exercise runs until 31 December 2026.
How to apply for Medical Laboratory Science at CCU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME: choose Coal City University and “Medical Laboratory Science”, with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as your result is out. CCU cannot propose you without it.
- Fill the CCU form: go to portal.ccu.edu.ng, generate the invoice, pay the fee shown and print the form.
- Ask about MLSCN approval: before you pay acceptance, ask CCU in writing whether the MLSCN has approved the B.MLS and whether students are indexed with the council.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept within JAMB’s four-week window. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: CCU’s fees were not published in any source I could reach, so pay only against a portal invoice.
Before you pay
To practise, an MLS graduate must be inducted and registered by the MLSCN, and I could not confirm the council’s approval of CCU’s B.MLS. Get a written answer from CCU on MLSCN approval and student indexing before paying acceptance, apply only through portal.ccu.edu.ng, and never pay an individual for a place.
Studying Medical Laboratory Science at CCU
Is CCU Medical Laboratory Science accredited?
There are two separate approvals for this degree.
- NUC (university regulator): the NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (September 2026) lists Medical Laboratory Science under CCU’s Allied Health Sciences programmes with Interim accreditation, maturing in 2027. Interim status means the programme met the NUC’s basic standard but has gaps to fix before a return visit. Admission into it is legitimate, and the NUC will visit again by the maturity date. I found no NUC report page with the details.
- MLSCN (professional council): the MLSCN approves universities to train medical laboratory scientists and registers graduates. I found no public MLSCN list naming CCU, so its approval is not confirmed. Approval may well exist, so ask CCU for proof.
For comparison, the same NUC list shows CCU’s Nursing Science and Radiology and Radiation Science with full accreditation maturing in 2030, so the health faculty is being visited by the NUC.
What you study
CCU has not put its MLS curriculum online. A Nigerian B.MLS usually runs for five years:
- 100 level: general biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, use of English and general studies.
- 200 level: human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, with an introduction to laboratory practice.
- 300 and 400 levels: medical microbiology, haematology and blood transfusion science, chemical pathology, histopathology, parasitology, immunology and laboratory management.
- 500 level: specialisation in one discipline, clinical laboratory postings and a research project.
Careers
Registered medical laboratory scientists work in hospital and private laboratories, blood banks, public health and disease control programmes, research institutes, pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, and teaching. Many go on to specialise through postgraduate study or the council’s fellowship route. All of this depends on MLSCN registration, which is why the council question matters.

Mistakes that cost MLS applicants a CCU place
- Mathematics in place of Physics in the UTME: JAMB’s general rule needs Physics.
- A missing credit in any of the five named O’level subjects.
- Applying late: places in health courses go first.
- Paying fees without asking about MLSCN approval.
- Paying an agent instead of using the CCU portal.
For the 2027 UTME, use our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus guides.
CCU Medical Laboratory Science cut-off mark: frequently asked questions
What is the JAMB cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science at Coal City University? The minimum is 150, JAMB’s 2026/2027 university floor. CCU has published no departmental figure, but I would aim for 190 or more.
Is Medical Laboratory Science at CCU accredited? The NUC lists it with interim accreditation maturing in 2027. I could not confirm MLSCN approval, so ask CCU in writing.
Can I study MLS at CCU without Physics? No. JAMB’s general rule needs Physics in the UTME and a Physics credit at O’level.
Can I use two sittings for MLS at CCU? CCU has not stated its rule. Many universities accept two sittings, but confirm with CCU before relying on combined results.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities and the four-week CAPS acceptance window come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026; the 2025 figure is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025), and CCU’s absence from the declared figures is based on News Central’s 2026 university list.
