The UNN cut off mark for Mechatronics Engineering in 2026/2027 is 160 to apply. That is the UTME minimum in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s 2026/2027 screening notice, and it applies to every course for candidates who made UNN their first choice. UNN has not published a departmental cut-off for Mechatronics Engineering, and unlike some older courses there is not even an unofficial blog estimate for it.
2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Vanguard and News Central reported UNN’s declared minimum at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting as 200. UNN accepts screening applications from 160, but its declared benchmark at that meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Mechatronics is one of the newer and more popular engineering choices, and the department’s intake is limited, so I would aim for 240 or more. Below: the official figures, subject combination, how ranking works, a worked aggregate and a clear picture of what the course covers.

Deadline warning
UNN’s 2026/2027 screening closed at midnight on 5 August 2026, and JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the last day for public universities to conclude admissions. If UNN offers you a place on CAPS, you have four weeks to accept it or you risk losing it.
Mechatronics Engineering cut-off history at UNN
Mechatronics is a younger department than Civil or Electrical Engineering, so there is very little history to show. These are the only figures that trace to a UNN notice or a named news report.
| Session | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 160 | UNN screening minimum, all courses (official) |
| 2026/2027 | 200 | UNN benchmark declared at JAMB policy meeting (news report) |
| 2025/2026 | 160 | UNN screening and advert minimum, all courses (UNN notice, as reprinted) |
| 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 | Not published | Departmental cut-off for Mechatronics Engineering |
Some candidates on admission forums reported in late October 2026 that they were still waiting for Mechatronics names to appear on the 2026/2027 list. I could not confirm that from UNN. If your status on CAPS still reads “not admitted yet”, keep checking until JAMB’s 31 October deadline for public universities passes.
UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for Mechatronics
The Myschool reprint of the JAMB brochure for Mechatronics Engineering has no UNN-specific remark, so the table gives JAMB’s usual combination for this course. Confirm it on the JAMB e-brochure before you register.
| Requirement | Mechatronics Engineering (JAMB’s usual requirement) |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus one other science subject |
| Number of sittings | UNN’s engineering remarks generally allow not more than two; confirm for this course |
| Direct Entry | A’level passes in any two of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (general brochure); UNN’s other engineering courses ask for all three |
| Minimum age | 16 by 30 September 2026 |
| Mode of entry | UTME (the department’s page lists UTME students) |
If you can add Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing as your fifth credit, do. Mechatronics leans on both mathematics and design from the first year.
How UNN ranks Mechatronics applicants
UNN does not publish the formula it uses to rank candidates, and its 2026/2027 notice describes an online registration with no written test, test date or test format. So any aggregate you see online for Mechatronics Engineering, including the one below, is a reconstruction.
The method most often reported by Nigerian education blogs gives UTME 60% and O’level 40%. Your four core O’level grades are converted to points (A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60, C6 = 50) and added up, so the O’level part is out of 400, the same scale as JAMB. The final figure is UTME x 0.6 plus O’level points x 0.4. This is a commonly used blog method, not an official UNN formula. Use it only to compare yourself with other applicants.
Example calculation
Tobenna scored 255 in the 2026 UTME. His WAEC grades: English B2, Mathematics A1, Physics A1 and Chemistry B3.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| O’level points | 90 (B2) + 100 (A1) + 100 (A1) + 80 (B3) | 370 |
| UTME at 60% | 255 x 0.6 | 153 |
| O’level at 40% | 370 x 0.4 | 148 |
| Aggregate (blog method) | 153 + 148 | 301 out of 400 |
A candidate with the same 255 but four C5 grades would have 240 O’level points, 96 after weighting, and an aggregate of 249. That gap of 52 points shows why your WAEC grades matter almost as much as JAMB in this method.
Admission odds for Mechatronics Engineering
Robotics, automation and embedded systems are popular with candidates who like both machines and electronics, and that shows in demand for Mechatronics wherever it is offered. UNN has not published how many Mechatronics students it takes each year, so I can’t tell you the exact number of places.
Federal universities fill places using the national admission guideline, which is widely reported as 45% on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split, its catchment list or an ELDS list. UNN’s catchment is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you rely on it.
In practice, the merit slots go first to the highest scores in the whole applicant pool for the course, whatever their state. The catchment and ELDS slots then let candidates from those states in with somewhat lower scores. Your state of origin on your JAMB profile is the one that counts.
Score targets (my advice)
| 2026 UTME score | Outlook for Mechatronics at UNN |
|---|---|
| 160 to 209 | Eligible to apply; admission into Mechatronics unlikely |
| 210 to 239 | Possible with very good O’level grades or a catchment or ELDS advantage |
| 240 and above | A reasonable target |
These bands are not UNN figures. They are my reading of a high-demand engineering course at an older federal university with a modest intake.
Step-by-step: applying for Mechatronics Engineering at UNN
- Profile code first: send an SMS with NIN, a space and your 11-digit National Identification Number to 55019 or 66019 from the line registered with your NIN. The code JAMB sends back is what the CBT centre uses to register you.
- Make UNN your first choice: the 2026/2027 notice limited screening to first-choice candidates. Pick Mechatronics Engineering exactly as UNN lists it on JAMB’s e-brochure, or you will need a paid change of course later.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: UNN asked candidates to put their WAEC or NECO results on JAMB CAPS and on the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. You can do the CAPS upload at a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre. Awaiting results were not accepted.
- Register on the UNN portal: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice and pay N5,300 on Remita at any commercial bank.
- Complete the form: come back, enter your JAMB number again, fill your personal details and O’level centre and exam numbers, and upload each document under 100KB: birth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip and your O’level result (two if you used two sittings). Check your date of birth before you submit, because UNN does not let you change it later. Print the acknowledgement slip.
- Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept the offer if the course is right, then print your JAMB admission letter.
- Pay UNN’s acceptance fee: blogs report it as N25,000, but UNN has not published the 2026/2027 amount in any notice I could open. Pay only through the UNN portal, then follow the clearance instructions.
Didn’t choose UNN first? For 2026/2027 that ruled you out of screening. For 2027, read our guide to JAMB change of institution and do it before UNN’s screening opens.
What you study in Mechatronics Engineering at UNN
UNN spells the department “Mechatronic Engineering” on its own website, and the Faculty of Engineering lists it among nine departments, alongside Automotive and Biomedical Engineering. The B.Eng. runs for five academic sessions.
According to the department, the first year covers mathematics, physics, chemistry, general studies and introductory engineering. After that, the programme moves into:
- Pneumatics, hydraulics and electromechanical systems
- Automation and robotics
- CAD, CAM and CNC for design and product development
- Control engineering
- Information technology, sensors and actuators
- Modelling of physical systems and software engineering
- Laboratory work, a seminar, a group project and a final-year project
- Industrial work experience (SIWES)
Accreditation
Mechatronics was not one of the six programmes in COREN’s 2018 visit report on UNN, and I could not find a published NUC or COREN result for the programme. Before you accept, ask the department or the faculty office about its current accreditation status. It affects when graduates can register with COREN.
Careers
Mechatronics graduates work in manufacturing and process automation, robotics, embedded systems, maintenance of industrial and medical equipment, the automotive sector and product design. It is also a good base for postgraduate study in control, robotics or AI-related engineering.
Related courses at UNN
The closest options at Nsukka are Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. From 2026/2027, UNN also has new NUC-approved programmes in Automotive Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, according to Myschool. For a computing route, see Computer Science at UNN.
If UNN does not offer you Mechatronics
- Watch CAPS for a transfer: UNN may offer you a related engineering or science course instead. Decide in advance which ones you would take.
- Look at universities still admitting: public universities had to finish by 31 October 2026, so act quickly if you plan to switch.
- Prepare for 2027: register early with UNN as first choice, and use our guide to the 2027 JAMB registration dates to plan your study time.
Common mistakes
- Expecting an official Mechatronics cut-off: none has been published, for this session or the last.
- Choosing a course name UNN does not use: on JAMB, pick the Mechatronics course exactly as listed under UNN.
- Skipping Chemistry in the UTME: the usual combination is English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- Not checking accreditation: ask the department before you accept.
- Missing the CAPS window: accept within four weeks of the offer.
