Oji River College of Health Tech Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) Admission Requirements 2027/2028: Entrance Exam and Form

What the Oji River College of Health Technology asks for CHEW admission: O’level, the college entrance exam, the last form price seen and how to apply for 2027/2028.

Oji River College of Health Technology CHEW admission requirements are short on paper: there is no JAMB cut-off mark for Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) at Enugu State College of Health Technology, Oji River. Admission runs through the college’s own form and entrance exam, and the only requirement in its last traced advert, for 2024/2025, was an O’level certificate. That year the form cost ₦10,000 at the college’s admission office and the entrance exam held on Saturday 10 August 2024 after a postponement. No 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 advert has been found.

2027/2028 update: The admission requirements and entrance exam process at Oji River College of Health Technology usually stay the same from one year to the next, so what is on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. The latest advert we could trace is the 2024/2025 one, reprinted by an admissions blog; no 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 notice has turned up. If the 2027/2028 advert changes anything, we will update this page.

Below are the known facts with their dates, the O’level subjects I would have before applying (clearly marked as my advice), how the entrance exam worked in the last cycle on record, the application steps, what CHEW training involves and the accreditation question you should ask before paying fees.

Is there a JAMB cut-off mark for CHEW at Oji River?

No cut-off mark has been published, and I could not find any source saying CHEW applicants at this college must sit the UTME. The 2024/2025 advert, as reprinted by Myschool, asked only for an O’level certificate and sent candidates to the college’s own entrance exam. What a CHEW applicant has to pass here is the college’s entrance exam.

If the college ever moves a programme onto JAMB’s list as a National Diploma, the national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics would apply. JAMB fixed that at 100 for 2025/2026 and kept it at 100 for 2026/2027 at its policy meeting of 11 May 2026. Until the college says so, treat that figure as background only.

Those 2024 dates and the ₦10,000 price belong to the 2024/2025 cycle. They are useful as a guide to timing, since the form came out in June and the exam held in August that year, but they are not 2026 or 2027 figures.

O’level subjects for CHEW at Oji River

The college has not published a subject list for CHEW. The only requirement in the advert reprint is an O’level certificate, with a reminder that candidates must meet the programme’s entry requirements before applying. That leaves the details to the admission office, so here is what I would have before buying the form. This is my advice, based on what health training programmes in Nigeria usually ask for, and it is not the college’s published list.

SubjectMy advice for CHEW
English LanguageCredit; I would not apply without it
MathematicsCredit
BiologyCredit
ChemistryCredit
Fifth subjectPhysics, Agricultural Science, Geography or Health Science at credit; ask which ones the college counts

Results from WAEC or NECO are the norm for Nigerian health training. Whether NABTEB is accepted, and whether you may combine two sittings, has not been published, so a single sitting with all five credits is the safest position.

One admissions blog (Studentship, June 2025) lists credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry plus a National Diploma “in a relevant field” for this college. An ND requirement makes no sense for school leavers applying to a certificate programme, so I read that line as copied from an HND template. Ask the admission office before you rely on it.

How the Oji River entrance exam works for CHEW

The college sets its own entrance exam. It has not published the subjects tested, the pass mark, the number of questions or how it ranks candidates, and no aggregate formula has been released. From the 2024/2025 cycle, these points are on record:

  • Forms were sold at the college’s admission office in Oji River, not through JAMB.
  • The form cost ₦10,000 in 2024. Myschool also advertised past questions for ₦4,500, but that was Myschool’s own product, not a college fee.
  • The exam was first fixed for Saturday 27 July 2024, then moved to Saturday 10 August 2024. Form sales closed on the exam day.
  • Studentship’s June 2025 page describes an online form and payment by card or at First Bank for the same session. The Myschool reprint says the admission office, and the college’s own notice was not available to me, so confirm the method in Oji River.

Worked example (illustrative)

Take Chinonso, who wants CHEW in 2027. His WAEC result has C5 in English, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in Biology, C4 in Chemistry, D7 in Physics and C6 in Economics. Four of my five recommended credits are there. The open question is the fifth: Physics is only a pass, so he asks the admission office whether Economics counts. If it does not, he sits NECO in November to pick up a credit in Physics or Agricultural Science. In 2024 the form came out in late June and the exam held in August, so he finishes revising English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry by early July in case the 2027 cycle follows the same pattern.

The steps in that example are my planning advice. The college has not published a scoring method, and a pass in its exam is what decides the offer.

How to apply for CHEW at Oji River College of Health Technology

  1. Confirm that sales are open: visit or call the admission office at the college in Oji River. With no official website found, the office is the safest source of the current form price, closing date and exam date.
  2. Check the O’level rule for CHEW: ask which five subjects need credits, whether two sittings are accepted, and whether awaiting results are allowed.
  3. Buy the form from the college: in 2024 it was ₦10,000 at the admission office. Pay only through the channel the college gives you and keep the receipt.
  4. Fill and submit the form: choose Community Health (CHEW) as your programme, attach passport photographs and copies of your O’level result and birth certificate or age declaration, and submit before the closing date.
  5. Write the entrance exam: go with your receipt or exam slip. Revise English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at SSCE level, since those are the subjects most health exams draw from.
  6. Check the list and accept: when your name appears, pay the acceptance fee and the other fees the college lists. In 2025 the Oji River council listed acceptance, tuition, accreditation, development, examination, sanitation, sports and hostel charges among what it paid for its scholars, which gives you an idea of the separate items to expect.
  7. Only if the college says JAMB is needed: create a JAMB profile by sending NIN and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019, register the UTME with the college as your choice, upload your O’level to JAMB CAPS, then accept the offer on CAPS before paying the college. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each screen.

Warning

No official website for this college turned up in our searches, and sites that look official can belong to agents. Buy the form only at the college or through a payment channel the admission office gives you in writing, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed place.

Your chances of admission into CHEW

The college does not publish an intake quota, and no applicant numbers have been released, so nobody can give you real odds. Two facts help. In November 2025 every one of the 47 Oji River indigenes sponsored by the local council was offered admission, across eight programmes. The council was paying their fees, so this tells you the college admitted candidates who met its requirements; it does not tell you how many outsiders were turned down.

For CHEW, a candidate with clean credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry who prepares well for the entrance exam should be in a reasonable position. That is my judgement, not a college statistic.

The college’s condition is the second thing to weigh. In August 2024 the Enugu State Government said the college had fallen from its former standing, announced a revamp and asked students to return after a security breach near the school. The government said the suspects had been arrested and the victims, one of them a student, freed, and that more security personnel had been posted to Oji River. Visit the campus, ask current students about lectures and clinical postings, and ask the college to show you its accreditation letter for CHEW.

What you study in CHEW

CHEWs work mainly in primary health care: health centres, health posts and the communities around them. CHPRBN publishes the National Standing Orders, the protocols community health practitioners follow when they assess, treat and refer patients. The college has not published its CHEW course list, so the topics below describe the cadre in general rather than this college’s timetable.

  • Basic anatomy and physiology and the principles of community health
  • Maternal and child health, including antenatal support and immunisation
  • Health education, nutrition and family planning counselling
  • Recognising and treating common illnesses under the Standing Orders, and knowing when to refer
  • Community diagnosis, home visits and health records
  • Supervised postings in health centres and communities

Duration and award

The college has not stated how long its CHEW programme runs or what the certificate is called. A 2018 study of Nigeria’s primary care workforce in BMC Health Services Research lists CHEW training at three years and JCHEW at two. Confirm the length and the award with the admission office before you accept.

Accreditation and licensing

CHPRBN registers community health practitioners and accredits the institutions that train them. I could not confirm that CHPRBN has accredited the CHEW programme at Oji River: the board’s website showed no South East list when I checked, and the college has published nothing on it. Registration with CHPRBN is what lets you practise, so ask to see the accreditation letter before paying school fees.

Do not confuse this college with the Oji River campus of the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences. The state government reported in April 2025 that the nursing college had opened campuses in Nsukka and Oji River after accreditation. That is a separate institution with its own admissions, and nursing is not one of the College of Health Technology’s programmes.

Careers

  • Primary health centres run by the state or local governments
  • Immunisation, maternal health and other community programmes run by NGOs
  • Private clinics and maternity homes
  • Further training toward Community Health Officer, a higher cadre that the 2018 study puts at four years of training

For entrance exam revision, the topic lists in our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus cover most of the SSCE science you will meet.

Mistakes CHEW applicants make

  • Waiting for a JAMB cut-off: none has been published. The college’s own form and exam decide admission.
  • Planning with 2024 dates: the 27 July and 10 August 2024 exam dates and the ₦10,000 price were for 2024/2025.
  • Buying forms from strangers: buy at the college or through a channel it names.
  • Skipping the accreditation question: ask whether CHPRBN has accredited the CHEW programme before you pay school fees.
  • Missing a science credit: Biology and Chemistry are the credits I would never apply without.

If you also plan to write the UTME for a university or polytechnic place, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and, if you later want to switch schools, JAMB change of institution.
