ESUT Banking and Finance Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Requirements, Screening and Career Path

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Banking and Finance in 2027/2028 is 160, and no merit score is published. See the ESUT subject remarks, O’level and ND rules, screening terms, a worked example and career paths.

The ESUT cut off mark for Banking and Finance for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 named Accountancy and Business Administration at 180 but did not name Banking and Finance, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies to it. With 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right subjects, you were eligible for screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

That 160 is the gate, not the admission score, and ESUT does not publish a final merit score for Banking and Finance or any other course. The JAMB brochure also carries ESUT-specific remarks for this course that loosen the UTME rule and tighten the O’level one, and most blogs skip them. Below are the official figure, the cut-off history I could trace, my safe target score, those ESUT remarks, how the no-test screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps and the careers the degree leads to.

Keep the two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score actually admitted into the course after screening, and ESUT does not announce it. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first as the second.

Banking and Finance cut-off history at ESUT

2025/2026160Minimum UTME to apply (not named, so “Others”)Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice
Any yearNot publishedFinal merit score for Banking and FinanceNo ESUT list found

Banking and Finance stayed in the general band in both years I could trace, while ESUT kept Accountancy at 180 and moved Business Administration up to 180 for 2026/2027. That suggests ESUT sees less pressure on Banking and Finance than on its two neighbours. Bands can move each session, so treat the 2025/2026 row as history and check the next advert.

Some blogs quote much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for courses such as Accounting (246) and Medicine (314) without an ESUT document behind them. None of those lists gives an official figure for Banking and Finance, so ignore any number you see that ESUT did not publish.

Safe target score for Banking and Finance at ESUT (my advice)

This is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Banking and Finance gets steady demand, and it also absorbs candidates who missed Accountancy at 180 or above. Those candidates bring higher scores into the pool, which is why 160 on its own is a thin margin.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Banking and Finance
160 to 179Eligible, but you depend on few stronger applicants. Good O’level grades help.
180 to 199A fair chance.
200 to 219A good chance.
220 and aboveComfortable for Banking and Finance. You could also compete for Accountancy.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Banking and Finance is 200 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics and Economics.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT has not published a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. If you are from outside Enugu, plan to win on your score and grades rather than on state of origin.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Banking and Finance

RequirementBanking and Finance
UTME subjects (ESUT remark)Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and any Social Science subject
UTME subjects (general brochure rule)Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and one of Government or Geography
O’level (general)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and any other subjects
O’level (ESUT remark)Credits in Economics and two other subjects, on top of English and Mathematics
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; most universities allow up to two. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure
Direct EntryTwo A’level passes from Accounting, Economics, Management, Mathematics, Geography and Statistics (general rule). ESUT remark: ND in Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance accepted, and ND in relevant faculty programmes into 200 level, with the UTME requirements
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Banking and Finance as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). The general rule limits the fourth UTME subject to Government or Geography. A remark naming ESUT, UNN and OOU widens it to any Social Science subject, so Commerce or Financial Accounting should also work for ESUT. Government is still the safest pick because it satisfies both versions.

The general O’level line asks only for English, Mathematics and three other credits. A separate remark lists ESUT among the schools that require Economics plus two other credits. So treat a credit in Economics as compulsory for ESUT Banking and Finance.

ESUT’s advert says Direct Entry candidates are screened online and must be cleared on JAMB e-facility by their former institutions. The brochure remark adds that ESUT accepts an ND in Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, and NDs in relevant faculty programmes into 200 level, but it does not state the grade. Confirm the minimum ND grade with the department.

How ESUT screening works for Banking and Finance

These were the 2026/2027 screening terms in ESUT’s advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you what to prepare for 2027.

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Banking and Finance candidate

Take Ifeanyi, who scored 192 in the 2026 UTME with B3, C4, C4, C5 and C6 in English, Mathematics, Economics, Government and Commerce.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 192 minus the 160 minimum = 32 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 192 ÷ 8 = 24.00 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 8 + 7 + 7 + 6 + 5 = 33 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 24.00 + 33 = 57.00 out of 100.

Chioma scored 178 with B2, B2, B3, C4 and C4. Her illustrative total is 22.25 + 40 = 62.25, ahead of Ifeanyi with 14 fewer UTME marks. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Ifeanyi leads. ESUT has not published how it ranks, so raise both your score and your grades.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Banking and Finance at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and a Social Science subject such as Government and choose ESUT and Banking and Finance. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Banking and Finance, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list appeared on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026, Myschool reported. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer and set 31 October 2026 as the end of admissions for public universities. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027. I have not read their terms, so check the portal if CAPS shows a course other than the one you applied for.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Banking and Finance at ESUT

Banking and Finance is in ESUT’s Faculty of Management Sciences, alongside Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Co-operative Economics and Management, Insurance and Risk Management, Marketing, Mass Communication and Public Administration. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State. The pages I checked do not confirm where the faculty’s buildings sit, so treat Agbani as the likely base and confirm when you resume. Nigerian B.Sc. programmes in this field run for four years for UTME entrants. Direct Entry candidates start at 200 level and finish in three.

Banking and Finance covers how money moves through banks, markets and businesses, and how financial institutions are run and regulated. It shares first-year courses with Accountancy and Economics. Expect areas like these:

  • Principles and practice of banking: deposits, lending, payments and bank operations.
  • Monetary economics and central banking: money supply, interest rates and the role of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
  • Corporate finance and investment analysis: capital budgeting, valuation and portfolio choices.
  • Financial markets and institutions: the capital market, the money market and non-bank financial firms.
  • Credit and risk management, bank lending and banking law.
  • Accounting, statistics and computer applications in finance.
  • Industrial training (SIWES) and a final-year research project.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). “Administration” appears to mean the faculty ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert calls Management Sciences, but the report names faculties, not programmes, and gives no grade for Banking and Finance on its own. I found no programme-level result, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status when you go for clearance.

Career paths after Banking and Finance

  • Commercial, merchant and microfinance banking, from operations and customer service to credit analysis.
  • Investment and stockbroking firms, asset management and pension fund administrators.
  • Finance roles in companies, NGOs and government agencies.
  • Fintech and digital payments firms, which hire finance graduates for risk, compliance and operations work.
  • Professional qualifications: many bankers sit the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) exams. Check its current requirements and exemptions when you graduate.
  • Postgraduate study in banking, finance or business administration.

Mistakes Banking and Finance applicants make

  • Applying Accountancy’s figure to this course: Accountancy is 180 at ESUT; Banking and Finance is 160.
  • Skipping Economics at O’level: the brochure’s ESUT remark requires it even though the general line does not.
  • Picking an Arts subject as the fourth UTME subject: the ESUT remark asks for a Social Science subject.
  • Expecting a Post-UTME test to rescue a low score: ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no test, so your UTME score and O’level do the work.
  • Forgetting the CAPS upload: ESUT’s advert makes the O’level upload compulsory for every candidate.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
  • Name mismatches: ESUT asks that names match across O’level certificates, the UTME result and other documents.
