ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Medical Laboratory Science 2027/2028: Requirements, O’Level Rules and Screening

ESUT needs 200 in the UTME to apply for Medical Laboratory Science in 2027/2028. See the official figures, a safe target score, O’level rules, the online screening, a worked example and CAPS steps.

The ESUT cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science for 2026/2027 is 200 in the UTME. That is the minimum Enugu State University of Science and Technology set for Medical Laboratory Sciences in its official 2026/2027 Post-UTME advert, posted on 4 July 2026 and signed by the Registrar, Ambrose G. Ugwu. MLS shares the 200 tier with Medical Radiography, Computer Science and ESUT’s five new technology and security programmes.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

That 200 let you register for ESUT’s screening. The score that actually wins a Medical Laboratory Science place is set by competition after screening, and ESUT does not publish it. This guide covers the official figures, a safe target score (my advice, labelled as such), the subject and O’level rules, how ESUT’s online screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps and what the BMLS programme involves.

The MLS minimum has stayed at 200 for two sessions, while the courses above it moved around: Optometry and Physiotherapy joined Pharmacy at 220 this year. A departmental merit cut-off for MLS has not been published by ESUT for any recent session, and I found no figure for it even on the blogs that print unofficial numbers for Medicine, Nursing and Radiography. Cut-offs change every year with the number of applicants, so treat any figure you see without an ESUT document behind it with suspicion.

Safe target score for MLS at ESUT (my advice)

This is my judgement, not an ESUT rule. Medical Laboratory Science draws many of the same candidates as Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing, and some of them list MLS as a fallback. That pushes the scores at the bottom of the admission list above the 200 minimum.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for ESUT MLS
Below 200Not eligible for MLS at ESUT this session
200 to 219Eligible, but a place on merit is a long shot
220 to 239Possible with clean O’level grades in the five sciences
240 to 259Competitive
260 and aboveStrong. This is where I would aim.

For a 2027 attempt I would aim for 250 or more, with A1 or B2 in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Catchment

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. As an Enugu State Government university, Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from all states. ESUT has not published a merit, catchment or ELDS split either, so the federal 45/35/20 guideline should not be assumed here.

UTME subject combination and O’level for ESUT MLS

RequirementMedical Laboratory Science at ESUT
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure)
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB
Number of sittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert. Many universities accept two sittings for MLS; confirm ESUT’s brochure entry.

Direct EntryScreened online; ESUT has not published DE entry grades for MLS
Special requirementsNone in the 2026/2027 advert (no interview or portfolio)

Physics catches some MLS candidates out because they think of the course as “Biology and Chemistry”. JAMB’s usual combination for Medical Laboratory Science includes Physics, and so does the O’level list. Register for it and make sure the credit is there.

The advert also warns that names must match across your O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents. Fix any mismatch before you apply.

How ESUT screening works for MLS

There was no written Post-UTME at ESUT for 2026/2027. Candidates registered online, paid ₦2,000 and uploaded their O’level results to JAMB CAPS. The advert lists no test and no physical screening.

Worked example for an MLS candidate

ESUT has not published how it ranks candidates or any aggregate formula. With no test, the measurable parts are your UTME score and your O’level grades. So the useful sum is how far your score sits above the 200 minimum and below the safe target.

Take Ifeoma, with 236 in the 2026 UTME and B2, B2, B3, B3 and C4 in her five subjects, all from one WAEC sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 236 minus 200 = 36. She is 36 marks above the MLS minimum, so she could register.
  2. Against the safe target: 250 minus 236 = 14. She is 14 marks short of the score I would call comfortable.
  3. Her O’level: all five credits are in the right subjects and on CAPS, so she passes the eligibility checks.
  4. My advice to her: apply for MLS, and if ESUT offers a related course through a CAPS Transfer Approval, take it seriously.

Compare Tobenna, with 212. 212 minus 200 = 12. He was entitled to register, but in a field where many applicants score in the 230s and 240s, he needs a backup plan.

You will see 50:50 or 60:40 aggregate formulas online. Those are methods some Nigerian universities use. ESUT has not published one, and with no test this session there was no Post-UTME score to mix in.

How to apply for MLS at ESUT

  1. Profile code: text NIN followed by a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB sends your profile code for UTME registration.
  2. UTME registration: choose Medical Laboratory Science with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and pick ESUT as your first choice. If ESUT was not your choice, complete a JAMB change of institution before ESUT’s screening.
  3. O’level on CAPS: upload your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result to your JAMB profile. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory.
  4. ESUT screening form: at portal.esut.edu.ng, select 2026/2027, open “2026/2027 Admission Screening Registration” under Regular Students, enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Payment: pay ₦2,000 at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the invoice reference, or online by debit card.
  6. Submit: go back to the portal, re-enter your JAMB number, complete and confirm the form, submit it and print the acknowledgement slip.
  7. CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept within the four weeks JAMB allows.
  8. Acceptance and clearance: ESUT has not published its acceptance fee in any source I could reach. Blogs put it at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports); treat that as unofficial and confirm on the ESUT portal.

Warning

ESUT did not hold a written Post-UTME for 2026/2027, and genuine offers appear only on JAMB CAPS. Ignore anyone selling “MLS slots”, a supplementary list or past questions for a test ESUT did not set.

Myschool reported on 13 October 2026 that ESUT had uploaded its 2026/2027 provisional admission list to JAMB CAPS, and JAMB asked public universities to finish admissions by 31 October 2026. If you applied, check CAPS now. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status, including Transfer Approval.

Studying Medical Laboratory Science at ESUT

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science is in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, under ESUT’s College of Medicine. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani, and the medical and health programmes are linked to the College of Medicine and ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu. The degree is the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS), which normally takes five years in Nigeria; ESUT’s own duration was not stated in the sources I reached.

The department’s graduates are being inducted into the profession. Myschool reported on 23 July 2026 that MLS would hold its 6th induction and oath-taking ceremony on 30 July 2026 at the Barr. Dr. Peter Mbah Multipurpose Hall, ESUT Agbani, with the Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr Donald Ofili, expected to induct the graduands. ESUT reported full NUC accreditation for programmes in several faculties after the 2024 exercise, but that report named faculties, not MLS, and I could not find a published MLSCN accreditation grade for the department.

  • Early years: general sciences, then human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
  • Core laboratory disciplines: medical microbiology, chemical pathology (clinical chemistry), haematology and blood transfusion science, histopathology and cytology, immunology and parasitology.
  • Practical training: laboratory placements in hospital settings, plus a research project.
  • Licensing: induction by the MLSCN, then an internship and registration as a medical laboratory scientist.
  • Careers: hospital and private diagnostic laboratories, blood banks, public health and disease surveillance, research institutes, the pharmaceutical industry and further study.

For revision, use our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Common mistakes MLS applicants make at ESUT

  • Stopping at 200: it qualifies you to apply. Admitted MLS candidates usually sit well above it.
  • Skipping Physics: it is in JAMB’s usual UTME combination and the O’level list for MLS.
  • No O’level on CAPS: ESUT requires every candidate to upload it.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
  • Ignoring a Transfer Approval: if ESUT offers you a related course, decide on CAPS quickly rather than letting the four weeks run out.
  • Paying an agent: ESUT’s screening fee was ₦2,000, paid through the portal invoice. There is nothing else to buy.

ESUT cut off mark for Medical Laboratory Science: FAQs

Is 220 enough for Medical Laboratory Science in ESUT? 220 clears ESUT’s 200 minimum for MLS, so you can apply. It is borderline for a merit place; strong O’level grades help, and I would aim for 250 or more.

Does ESUT write Post-UTME for MLS? No. ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening was online only, with no aptitude test or physical screening.

Can I use awaiting result for ESUT MLS screening? Yes, for WAEC, NECO and NABTEB May/June 2026, as long as the results were released by 30 September 2026.

Is Medical Laboratory Science at ESUT recognised by MLSCN? The MLSCN Registrar was billed to induct ESUT’s sixth set of MLS graduands in July 2026, so graduates are being licensed. ESUT has not published the department’s MLSCN accreditation grade.
