UNN Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Cut Off Mark 2027/2028: Requirements and Guide

The UNN cut off mark for Science Laboratory Technology in 2027/2028 is 160 to apply, with no official departmental figure. See the UTME subjects for each SLT option, O’level and Direct Entry rules, the five-year duration and the score to aim for.

The UNN cut off mark for Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the University of Nigeria, Nsukka set for candidates who chose UNN first and wanted to register for its 2026/2027 screening. UNN has not published a departmental cut off for SLT this session or last, so treat any “official SLT cut off” you see online as a guess.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

UNN’s declared minimum at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting was reported as 200. SLT is less crowded than Medical Laboratory Science, but it is a five-year degree with specific subject rules that trip up many applicants. This guide covers the official figures, the UTME combination for each SLT option, O’level and Direct Entry rules from the department’s own page, a worked aggregate example, the score I would aim for and the steps from JAMB profile code to acceptance.

Why two numbers? JAMB’s policy meeting list gave UNN as 200, but the university’s own screening notice invited everyone with 160 and above. The safest reading: UNN accepts screening applications from 160, UNN’s declared institutional benchmark at the 2026 JAMB policy meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Use 160 to check that you can register, and judge your chances of a place by the competition for the course.

Has UNN released a departmental cut off mark for SLT?

No. As of 29 October 2026, UNN has not published departmental cut off marks for any course for 2026/2027, and I found no official departmental list for 2025/2026 either. I also found no blog estimate for SLT at UNN, which is a sign that most sites simply copy the general figure. The table below shows only what can be traced to a source.

SessionUNN general minimum (UTME)SLT departmental figureSource

2025/2026160 in the UTME and 160 in screening (advert window)Not publishedUNN advert notice as reprinted by Myschool, 20 October 2025

Departmental cut offs are worked out after screening, when UNN sees how many people applied for each course and how they scored. They change every year, so even a figure from an earlier session would only show you the level of competition, never a promise.

JAMB subject combination for UNN Science Laboratory Technology

This is where SLT differs from most courses. UNN’s SLT department admission page splits the programme into technique options and gives a different UTME combination for each:

SLT option at UNNUTME subjects (including Use of English)
Physics/Electronic TechniquesEnglish, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
Chemistry TechniquesEnglish, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
Biochemistry TechniquesEnglish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
Microbiology TechniquesEnglish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
Pharmacology/Physiology TechniquesEnglish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Chemistry and Physics appear in every option, so do not drop either. Your fourth subject decides which side you can join: Mathematics for the physical and chemical options, Biology for the life science options. If you are not sure yet, I would write English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, because that combination covers three of the five options and also keeps Medical Laboratory Science open.

The general JAMB brochure entry for Science Laboratory Technology lists Biology, Chemistry and either Physics or Mathematics, and UNN has no UNN-specific remark in the reprint I checked. Where the brochure and the department page differ, follow the stricter UNN department rule, and confirm on the JAMB e-brochure before you register.

O’level and Direct Entry requirements

RequirementWhat UNN asks forSource
O’level subjectsFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and BiologyUNN Department of SLT
Number of sittingsNot more than twoUNN Department of SLT
Accepted examsWAEC or NECO SSCE, GCE O’level, or NABTEB equivalentUNN Department of SLT
Direct EntryND in SLT or a relevant subject (at least lower credit), or a B.Sc. in SLT or a relevant subject (at least lower class honours), plus five O’level creditsUNN Department of SLT
Direct Entry levelYou join in the second year of the five-year programme, so at least four yearsUNN Department of SLT

All five O’level subjects are compulsory, whichever option you pick. A candidate heading for Physics/Electronic Techniques still needs a credit in Biology, and a candidate heading for Microbiology Techniques still needs Mathematics and Physics. A credit means C6 or better.

For ND holders, the Direct Entry route is the strongest part of this course. If you already hold an ND in Science Laboratory Technology from a polytechnic, UNN lets you join in year two, and you register through JAMB’s Direct Entry form, not the UTME.

How UNN screening and the aggregate work for SLT

UNN’s 2026/2027 screening was an online registration with document uploads. The notice described no written or CBT test and did not say how candidates are ranked.

ItemUNN 2026/2027 screening (official notice, 13 July 2026)
Who could applyCandidates who chose UNN as first choice in the 2026 UTME and scored 160 or more; Direct Entry candidates who chose UNN first
Fees₦2,000 application plus ₦3,300 processing (₦5,300 in total), paid through Remita
WindowOpened Wednesday 15 July 2026, closed midnight Wednesday 5 August 2026
O’level uploadTo JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026
Awaiting resultsNot eligible: results had to be available
AgeCandidates under 16 by 30 September 2026 were told not to apply
Written testNone described in the notice; it was an online screening registration
UploadsBirth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip, O’level result(s), each under 100KB

UNN has not published its aggregate formula in any notice I could open. The method most often reported by education blogs is 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score, where four relevant subjects are graded A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat it as a commonly used blog method, not an official UNN formula, and use it only to see roughly where you stand.

Take a SLT candidate with 215 in the UTME and C4 in English, B3 in Mathematics, B2 in Chemistry, B3 in Biology.

  • O’level points: 70 + 80 + 90 + 80 = 320 out of 400
  • UTME part: 215 × 0.6 = 129
  • O’level part: 320 × 0.4 = 128
  • Estimated aggregate: 129 + 128 = 257 out of 400

Under this method, a candidate with an average UTME score but solid O’level grades can stay competitive. Raise one C4 to a B2 and the estimate goes up by 8 points, the same effect as about 13 extra UTME marks.

Admission odds: what UTME score to aim for in UNN SLT

SLT at UNN is a relatively young degree. The department’s history page says the full-time B.Sc. was approved for the 2018/2019 session, so it is less known among candidates than Microbiology or Biochemistry. That usually means less pressure on places, though the five compulsory O’level credits screen out many people early.

My advice, not a UNN figure: aim for 200 to 230 in the UTME, with credits in all five O’level subjects and B grades in Chemistry and your fourth subject.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for UNN SLT
160 to 189Eligible for screening, but you depend on strong O’level grades and catchment or ELDS status.
190 to 209A reasonable chance if your O’level grades are good.
210 and aboveCompetitive in a normal year.

Places are shared under a national guideline for federal universities:

  • Merit: the federal guideline usually quoted for federal universities is 45% of places on merit, filled from the top scorers in each course regardless of state. UNN has not published its own split.
  • Catchment: about 35% under the same guideline. UNN’s catchment is generally understood to be the South-East states, but UNN has not published a list online, so confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the admissions office before you count on it.
  • ELDS: about 20% for educationally less developed states. This is a federal designation and UNN does not publish its own list, so I will not name states here.
  • State of origin: what counts is the state on your JAMB profile, backed by the LGA identification letter you upload during screening.

How to apply for Science Laboratory Technology at UNN

Warning

UNN did not accept awaiting results for its 2026/2027 screening. Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result had to be out and uploaded to both JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal before screening closed. If you plan to rewrite a subject, sit it early enough for the result to be ready before the next screening window opens.

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you use to register.
  2. Register for the UTME with the right subjects: pick Science Laboratory Technology at the University of Nigeria as your first choice. UNN only screens first-choice candidates, so a second-choice listing will not get you onto its portal.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre as soon as your WAEC or NECO result is out. In 2026 UNN wanted results on CAPS and on its own portal by the screening deadline.
  4. Register for UNN screening: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal, then Prospective Students and the screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate and pay the Remita invoice, come back and enter the number again, fill in your personal and O’level details (centre and exam numbers), upload your documents, review, submit and print the acknowledgement slip. You cannot change your date of birth afterwards.
  5. Check CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If UNN has offered you a place, read the course name carefully before you click Accept.
  6. Finish with UNN: print your JAMB admission letter, then pay the UNN acceptance fee on the university portal and follow the clearance instructions. The fee has been reported as ₦25,000 by an education blog, but I could not find it in an official UNN notice, so confirm the figure on the portal before paying.

Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each CAPS status. If UNN offers you SLT when you applied for Medical Laboratory Science or Biochemistry, it will show as a transfer on CAPS, and you decide whether to accept it.

What you study in SLT at UNN

Science Laboratory Technology trains people to run scientific laboratories: preparing samples and reagents, operating and maintaining instruments, carrying out analyses, keeping quality records and keeping the lab safe. At UNN the course is run by the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, listed under the Faculty of Physical Sciences on the Nsukka campus.

  • History: UNN trained laboratory technologists through diplomas for years. The Senate stopped its diploma programmes in 2005, approved in principle in 2007 that SLT should become a degree, and a B.Sc. (Tech.) began in 2016. On 31 August 2018 the full-time B.Sc. in SLT was approved to start from the 2018/2019 session.
  • Verification: the department reports that UNN passed resource verification visits by the NUC and the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) in August and October 2018. I did not find a later NUC accreditation result, so ask the department about its current status.
  • Duration: five years for UTME entrants and at least four for Direct Entry.
  • Options: Physics/Electronic Techniques, Chemistry Techniques, Biochemistry Techniques, Microbiology Techniques and Pharmacology/Physiology Techniques.
  • Typical content: basic sciences in the early years, then laboratory management, instrumentation, analytical methods and the techniques of your option, ending with a project. Check the department’s course list for the current outline.

For revision, the JAMB Chemistry syllabus matters for every SLT option, and the JAMB Biology syllabus if you are going for the life science options.

SLT graduates work as laboratory scientists and technologists in universities, research institutes, polytechnics and secondary schools, and in quality control for food, beverage, pharmaceutical, oil and gas and water companies. Some go into equipment sales and maintenance, and others continue to a master’s degree in their technique area. Professional practice as a laboratory technologist in Nigeria is regulated by NISLT, so ask about registration once you are admitted.

UNN SLT cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 200 enough for Science Laboratory Technology in UNN? It clears the 160 screening minimum and matches the 200 benchmark, and with good O’level grades it gives you a fair chance. UNN has not published an SLT cut off, so I would aim for 210 or more to be comfortable.

Is SLT in UNN four years or five years? Five years for UTME entrants, according to the department’s admission page. Direct Entry candidates join in the second year and spend at least four years.

Can I use awaiting result for UNN SLT screening? No. UNN’s 2026/2027 notice said candidates awaiting results were not eligible, and O’level results had to be uploaded to JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026.

Can I enter UNN SLT with an ND? Yes. The department accepts an ND in SLT or a relevant subject with at least lower credit, plus five O’level credits, for Direct Entry into the second year.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum, screening fees, dates, eligibility rules, upload list and portal steps come from UNN’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar on 13 July 2026. The 200 figure comes from Vanguard’s report of the JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026), and the national 150 minimum and the four-week CAPS acceptance window from the News Agency of Nigeria’s report of the same meeting. The 2025/2026 figures come from Myschool’s reprint of UNN’s advert notice (20 October 2025). The UTME combinations by option, O’level, sitting, Direct Entry rules and five-year duration come from the UNN Department of Science Laboratory Technology admission page, and the programme history and 2018 verification visits from the department’s history page. The general JAMB brochure combination comes from Myschool’s reprint of the Science Laboratory Technology entry, which has no UNN remark. The aggregate method is a blog method (Studentship), not UNN policy, and the ₦25,000 acceptance fee comes from an O3schools page without an official source. The safe target scores are my own advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if UNN publishes departmental cut off marks.
