Harvard SEAS engineering graduate admission for international students is a fall-only process with two dates: 1 December 2026 for the master’s programmes and 15 December 2026 for the PhD, both at 5 p.m. Eastern time. The application fee is $105, the GRE is optional, and non-native English speakers without an English-medium bachelor’s degree need at least 95 on the TOEFL iBT or 7 on IELTS.
The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is tied for No. 22 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list. SEAS PhD students are fully funded, with a stipend of $4,330 a month before tax in 2026-27 on top of tuition and fees. Master’s students get no financial aid, and SEAS does not offer a master’s in its PhD fields at all. This guide covers which degree to apply for, the requirements, money, and how to make your file stand out.
Harvard SEAS at a glance

- Application fee: $105, with a waiver request in the application’s fee section.
- English: TOEFL iBT 95 or IELTS 7 minimum where required; no waivers.
- Degree length: three- and four-year bachelor’s degrees both accepted.
- Decisions: mid-February; reply by 15 April.
- Average time to PhD: 5.5 years.
Harvard engineering ranking
Harvard SEAS shares No. 22 with Duke and the University of Washington in the U.S. News 2026 engineering list. That puts it well below Harvard’s position in most overall university rankings, mainly because SEAS is a smaller school than the engineering giants. For a PhD applicant the rank matters less than the lab: SEAS admits you to work with a specific faculty adviser who has agreed to fund you.
Harvard SEAS graduate programmes
| Degree | Fields | Funding |
|---|---|---|
| PhD | Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Engineering Sciences (Bioengineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Environmental Science and Engineering; Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering) | Fully funded |
| S.M. (coursework) | Computational Science and Engineering (one year); Data Science (one and a half years) | No SEAS aid |
| M.E. (research, two years) | Computational Science and Engineering | No SEAS aid |
| Master in Design Engineering (MDE) | Joint with the Graduate School of Design | Through GSD |
| MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences | Joint with Harvard Business School | HBS need-based fellowships and loans |
There is no terminal master’s in mechanical, electrical or bioengineering. If you want a taught master’s in a traditional engineering field, Harvard is the wrong school. You also do not need a master’s to start the PhD.
Harvard SEAS graduate admission requirements
| Document | What SEAS asks for |
|---|---|
| Statement of purpose | Up to 1,000 words: research interests, preparation, and the SEAS labs you want to join |
| Recommendations | Three letters, submitted online |
| Transcripts | Unofficial copies uploaded; certified literal English translation for non-English records |
| CV or resume | Required |
| GRE | Optional (General and Subject) |
| English test | TOEFL iBT 95 or IELTS 7, sent to GSAS (TOEFL code 3451) |
| Interview | Not required and not offered |
SEAS sets no GPA minimum, but it expects excellent grades, roughly in the A to A- range, along with research potential, solid preparation in coursework and strong letters. Your degree must be finished before you enrol. SEAS does not require WES, but if you are unsure how your degree compares with a US one, it suggests asking a reputable credential evaluation service.
English requirement
You need TOEFL or IELTS if English is not your native language and your bachelor’s degree is not from an institution that teaches in English. A master’s from an English-speaking university does not count. Scores must still be valid when you start, so for fall 2027 the test date must be 5 January 2025 or later. SEAS does not mention Duolingo and grants no waivers. Many applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other countries where universities teach in English will not need a test, but if your degree was taught in French, Arabic or Portuguese, book TOEFL or IELTS early.
Harvard SEAS application deadlines 2026-27
| Programme (fall 2027) | Deadline (5 p.m. Eastern) |
|---|---|
| S.M. and M.E. (Data Science, Computational Science and Engineering) | 1 December 2026 |
| PhD (all fields) | 15 December 2026 |
| Master in Design Engineering | Set by the Graduate School of Design |
| MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences | Set by Harvard Business School |
No late applications
SEAS does not accept late files and admits only for fall. Missing 15 December 2026 means waiting for fall 2028.
Review begins in mid to late December and decisions go out in mid-February. Master’s deferrals are generally refused; PhD deferrals are decided case by case after you accept.
Funding for Harvard SEAS PhD and master’s students
| Item | 2026-27 |
|---|---|
| PhD stipend | $4,330 a month before tax (about $51,960 over 12 months) |
| Tuition and fees | Covered |
| Transport and dental subsidies | $1,140 |
| Year 1 | Usually a full fellowship |
| Later years | Research assistantship, or a mix of teaching and research |
| Master’s (S.M., M.E.) | No financial aid from SEAS |
Support does not depend on need, as long as you stay in good standing. Students who started in fall 2024 or later are expected to teach two sections unless their adviser buys out the second, according to a March 2026 Harvard Crimson report. If you win an outside fellowship, SEAS expects you to use it in your first year in place of Harvard money.
Fellowships for international applicants
SEAS does not list named fellowships for international PhD applicants, because the standard package already funds everyone admitted. The large US awards are mostly for US citizens. For master’s study, look to home-country government scholarships and outside awards; SEAS points master’s students toward independent grants.
Harvard tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27
| Item | 2026-27 |
|---|---|
| Full tuition (PhD years 1 and 2, most master’s) | $59,048 |
| Computational Science and Engineering or Data Science master’s, first year | $67,504 |
| Student health fee | $972 a term |
| Student health insurance plan | $2,477 a term |
| Living costs, on campus, single, 9 months | $31,860 |
| Living costs, off campus shared, 9 months | $33,930 |
Adding these up, a first-year Data Science or CSE master’s student living on campus should plan for about $106,300 (my sum of tuition, two terms of health fees and insurance, and nine months of living costs). A 12-month living budget on campus is $42,480.
STEM OPT after a Harvard SEAS degree
Engineering, computer science, applied mathematics and data science fields appear on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so F-1 graduates can normally apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Your I-20’s CIP code and an E-Verify employer decide the final answer; confirm with the Harvard International Office.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Harvard
SEAS encourages serious candidates to email faculty, while warning that faculty may not reply to every message. Only ladder faculty can be primary PhD advisers, so check titles before you list someone in your application. Look at the group’s website for a recruiting note first.
For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Banda, I am applying to the SEAS PhD in Engineering Sciences (Environmental Science and Engineering) for fall 2027. I spent the past year measuring indoor air pollution from cooking fuels in 60 homes in Lusaka, and your group’s sensor work is where I want to take that data. Is your group taking students next year?” The name and project are invented.
Writing the statement of purpose for Harvard SEAS
SEAS gives you 1,000 words and asks for three things: what you want to research, how your past work prepared you, and which labs you want to join. Spend most of the words on one or two research experiences. Describe the question, your role, what failed and what you learned. Then name two or three SEAS ladder faculty and connect each to a specific next question. Leave out childhood stories and lists of prizes. For letters, ask the people who supervised that research; see our recommendation letter guide.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying for a master’s in a PhD field: SEAS does not admit to master’s programmes in those fields.
- Using the PhD date for a master’s: master’s applications close two weeks earlier, on 1 December.
- Converting the CGPA: give grades on your own scale with the grading key; the transcript must show courses, grades, the scale and degree confirmation.
- Assuming a 3-year degree is a problem: SEAS accepts three- and four-year degrees from recognised institutions.
- Counting on a master’s degree for the English test: only the bachelor’s counts.
- Listing affiliate faculty as advisers: only ladder faculty can admit PhD students.
Costs the PhD package does not cover
- The $105 application fee unless you get a waiver.
- TOEFL or IELTS fees.
- Visa, SEVIS fee and flights to Boston.
- Tax on the stipend, which is quoted before tax.
- Rent in Cambridge and Boston, which takes a large share of the stipend.
Who should apply to Harvard SEAS
Apply for the PhD if you have real research experience, top grades and a clear match with a SEAS lab. The master’s programmes fit people who want data science or computational science and can pay over $100,000 for the first year. I would look elsewhere if you need a funded master’s or want a taught master’s in mechanical, civil or electrical engineering.

Sources and updates
I checked this guide on 29 October 2026 against Harvard’s own pages: the SEAS how-to-apply page (programmes, fee, documents, timeline), the SEAS graduate FAQ (English minimums, deadlines, three-year degrees, faculty contact, time to degree), the SEAS funding and scholarship page (2026-27 stipend, master’s aid), the Harvard Griffin GSAS 2026-27 cost of attendance page and its PhD financial support page. The teaching load comes from a 4 March 2026 Harvard Crimson report. The rank comes from VnExpress International and UW News reports of the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list (April 2026). SEAS does not publish acceptance rates on these pages. I will update the stipend when SEAS posts 2027-28 figures.
