Purdue Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

Purdue Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Purdue engineering is tied for No. 4 in the U.S. News 2026 list. Here are the GRE rules by school, English scores and waivers, the $75 fee, PhD funding, 2026-27 costs and the 1 December 2026 deadline for international applicants.

Purdue engineering graduate admission for international students runs through Purdue’s Graduate School, but each engineering school sets its own rules on the GRE, English scores and deadlines. For most research programmes (MS thesis and PhD) the date that matters is 1 December 2026 for fall 2027 entry, the international application fee is $75, and the GRE is optional in mechanical, electrical and computer, and civil engineering but still required in aeronautics and astronautics.

Purdue’s College of Engineering is tied for No. 4 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list, released on 7 April 2026. Funding is the big split. Research students in MS thesis and PhD programmes are paid through fellowships, teaching assistantships or research assistantships and do not pay tuition, while professional (course-based) master’s students pay their own way. If you come from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or another country on Purdue’s list, a recent degree taught in English can exempt you from TOEFL or IELTS.

Purdue engineering ranking in 2026

Purdue moved up to No. 4 overall in the 2026 edition, behind MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley. Georgia Tech shares the No. 4 spot, which is why the rank is shown as tied. Purdue’s engineering news office called it a record score for research and graduate education. The specialty ranks matter more than the overall number when you pick a school, so here they are in one place.

Graduate specialty (U.S. News 2026)Purdue rank
Agricultural and biological engineeringNo. 1
Industrial engineeringNo. 4 (tied with Northwestern)
Aeronautical and astronautical engineeringNo. 5 (tied with Michigan)
Civil engineeringNo. 7
Electrical engineeringNo. 8 (tied with Carnegie Mellon and Cornell)
Mechanical engineeringNo. 8
Computer engineeringNo. 9 (tied with Cornell and Princeton)
Nuclear engineeringNo. 10 (tied with Penn State)
Biomedical engineeringNo. 5 among schools without a medical school or joint BME programme

Purdue engineering graduate programmes

Purdue organises engineering into separate schools, and you apply to one of them through the Graduate School portal. The main ones for international applicants are:

  • Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAE): MS, PhD and an online master’s.
  • Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE): on-campus MS and PhD, plus an online MS.
  • Mechanical Engineering (ME): MS thesis, direct PhD, PhD, professional master’s and online master’s.
  • Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering: MS (thesis and non-thesis) and PhD.
  • Industrial Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and Agricultural and Biological Engineering: MS and PhD.
  • Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering: MS and PhD, with several training-grant fellowships.
  • Chemical, Materials, Environmental and Ecological Engineering, and Engineering Education: research degrees, and a professional master’s in chemical engineering.

The thesis versus course-based choice decides your funding. A thesis MS or PhD can come with an assistantship. A professional master’s is a paid, coursework-only degree that is usually finished faster.

Purdue engineering graduate admission requirements

The documents are the same across the schools I checked (ME and AAE spell them out most clearly):

  1. Academic statement of purpose: your research interests, preparation and goals.
  2. Personal history statement: a separate essay about your background and path.
  3. Resume or CV.
  4. Transcripts: copies from every university you attended, whether or not you finished. International applicants upload both the original-language version and an English version. Purdue does not accept printouts downloaded from a student self-service system.
  5. Proof of degree: your diploma, or a provisional certificate showing the expected graduation date, in the original language and in English.
  6. Three recommendation letters, submitted online by your referees.
  7. English test scores, unless you qualify for the waiver.
  8. GRE, where your school requires it or where you choose to send it (institution code 1631).

Mechanical engineering recommends a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. Aeronautics recommends 3.25 for MS and 3.5 for PhD. Electrical and computer engineering says its international admits are typically in the top 5% of their graduating class, and expects three semesters of calculus plus differential equations and linear algebra. Civil engineering asks you to report your GPA as it appears on your transcript without converting it, and says about 75% of its applicants come from schools that do not grade on a 4.0 scale.

GRE policy by school

SchoolGRE policyNotes
Mechanical EngineeringOptionalEncouraged for applicants from less well-known universities
Electrical and Computer EngineeringOptional, no minimumAverage admitted scores: Verbal 152, Quant 166, Writing 3.6
Civil EngineeringNot requiredYou may still send a score
Aeronautics and AstronauticsRequiredExpected Verbal 156, Quant 159, Writing 4.0; waived for some Purdue graduates and applicants with 3 years of relevant work experience

If you studied at a university that American committees rarely see, a strong quant score is one of the few direct ways to show you can handle the maths. ECE says the same thing on its admissions page.

English requirements and the waiver

TestOverall minimumSection minimums
TOEFL iBT (old 0 to 120 scale)80Reading 19, Listening 14, Speaking 18, Writing 18
TOEFL iBT (new 1 to 6 scale, from 21 January 2026), as listed by AAE4.0Reading 4.0, Listening 3.5, Speaking 3.5, Writing 4.0
IELTS Academic6.5Reading 6.5, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0, Writing 5.5
Duolingo English Test115115 in each subscore

Some schools ask for more. ECE wants TOEFL writing of 22 or IELTS writing of 6, and it will not review applications below that. Civil engineering wants a TOEFL total of 90 for unconditional admission, and industrial engineering lists 90 as well. Scores must be no more than two years old.

The Graduate School waives the test if, within the last 36 months, you earned a bachelor’s or higher degree from an English-medium university in a listed country. The African countries on the list are Botswana, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland (Eswatini), Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A degree finished more than 36 months before you start means you need a test, so check your dates.

Spring dates for the 2027 term have passed, so the spring column shows the same dates a year later (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Decisions for fall applicants usually come by 1 May (ME) or 15 May (ECE), and ECE says most funded offers go out by 1 March.

Apply by 1 December

Fellowships and most assistantships are decided from the 1 December pool. Purdue ECE says it admits only limited numbers after that date, and AAE says some fellowships require it. The later dates still get you admitted, but most of the money has been given out by then.

Funding: PhD, MS thesis and professional master’s

Purdue’s mechanical engineering page puts it plainly: research students in MS thesis, direct PhD and PhD programmes are funded through fellowships, teaching assistantships or research assistantships, and tuition is not required for them. Professional and online master’s students are self-funded. Funding offers are separate from the admission decision, so you can be admitted without money.

  • Stipend floor: Purdue raised the minimum PhD stipend to $28,000 for fiscal-year appointments from 12 August 2024. Departments can pay more, and the figure may have risen since; ask for the number in writing with your offer.
  • Research assistantships: paid from faculty grants. ECE says they are usually offered after a semester of coursework and more often to PhD students.
  • Teaching assistantships: ECE requires a TOEFL speaking score of 27 or more, IELTS 8 or more, or an approved oral English test before you can teach.
  • Civil engineering: roughly 25% of applicants recommended for admission receive funding, and faculty make every assistantship decision, so you have to contact them.

Named fellowships

You do not apply for most Purdue fellowships separately. Faculty nominate strong applicants from the admissions pool. The Graduate School recruitment awards include the Graduate Excellence Fellowship, the David M. Knox Fellowship, the Charles C. Chappelle Fellowship and the Presidential Excellence Award, which adds $10,000 a year on top of a main funding package. College-level awards include the Ross Fellowship and named engineering fellowships such as the Gaw, Asire and Donnan fellowships. Purdue does not publish a general statement on international eligibility for each award, so ask the school’s graduate office which ones you were nominated for.

External awards that international students can bring include country programmes listed by Purdue Engineering, such as Fulbright (IIE and LASPAU) and the US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor. Check our list of American scholarships for international students for others.

Tuition and cost for a self-funded master’s

Purdue’s Bursar publishes 2026-27 graduate rates. The table below is the nonresident international rate under the Bursar’s “Computer Science and Engineering and Agricultural and Biological Engineering” category for a full-time student (8 or more credits).

Item (2026-27)Per semesterAcademic year
General service fee$4,859$9,718
Nonresident tuition$9,401$18,802
Differential general service fee$562$1,124
International fee$200$400
Fitness, wellness and activity fees$137$274
Tuition and fees subtotal$15,159$30,318
Housing and food (estimate)$8,367$16,734
Other estimated costs$1,935$3,870
Estimated total$25,461$50,922

For comparison, the regular graduate rate without the engineering differential is $29,194 a year in tuition and fees for an international student. Professional master’s programmes can set their own fees, and chemical engineering publishes a separate fee page for its professional master’s, so check your programme before you plan your budget. Summer terms are billed on top.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering degrees are on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so an F-1 graduate can normally add the 24-month STEM extension to the 12 months of standard OPT, up to three years of work in total. Your exact eligibility depends on the CIP code printed on your I-20 and on your employer using E-Verify. Federal rules change, so check with Purdue’s international students office before you count on it.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

At Purdue the adviser question is practical. Aeronautics and astronautics asks PhD applicants for a faculty commitment, and civil engineering says assistantships are decided by individual faculty. Find two or three professors whose recent papers match your work, read one paper properly, and write a short email.

For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Okafor, I read your 2025 paper on fatigue cracking in additively manufactured aluminium and I am applying to Purdue AAE for the fall 2027 PhD intake. My final-year project measured crack growth in welded 6061 joints, and I would like to ask whether you expect to take a new student.” Attach your CV, keep it under 200 words and send one polite follow-up after two weeks. The name and project in that example are invented.

Writing the statement of purpose for Purdue

Purdue asks for two essays, and most applicants waste the second one. Keep the academic statement of purpose about research: the problem you want to work on, what you have already done on it, the methods you can use, and which Purdue faculty and labs fit. Name people, but explain why, in one sentence each.

Use the personal history statement for what the first essay cannot hold: how you got into engineering, obstacles such as power cuts or strikes that delayed your degree, teaching or community work, and anything that explains a weak semester. If you need a referee, our recommendation letter guide shows what a strong academic letter covers.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Uploading the wrong transcript: Purdue rejects student-system printouts. Ask your registrar for a transcript copy, and include an English version if the original is in another language.
  2. Converting the CGPA yourself: civil engineering asks you to report the grade as earned. A Nigerian 4.2 on a 5.0 scale is not “3.36”; give the scale and your class of degree.
  3. Missing the ECE writing score: an 80 overall with writing below 22 means ECE will not read the file.
  4. Assuming the waiver applies: it needs a degree within 36 months and an English-medium university in a listed country.
  5. Applying after 1 December and expecting funding: the later dates are mostly for self-funded students.
  6. Treating a professional master’s as a route to an assistantship: it is self-funded by design.

Costs funding does not cover

  • The $75 application fee per programme, plus test fees for TOEFL, IELTS or the GRE.
  • Flights, the US visa application fee and the SEVIS fee.
  • Fees that a tuition remission may not cover; ask the department exactly which lines are waived.
  • Rent deposits and winter clothing for Indiana.
  • Summer months if your assistantship covers only fall and spring.

Who should apply to Purdue engineering

Apply if you want a research-heavy PhD or MS thesis in aerospace, agricultural and biological, civil, electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering, have strong maths, and can get your file in by 1 December. Purdue is also a good fit if you came from a large public university at home and want a big department with many labs to choose from. I would think twice about the professional master’s if you cannot show about $51,000 for the first year without a loan, because there is no assistantship built into it.
