WPI Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

WPI Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Worcester Polytechnic Institute admitted 39% of international applicants for fall 2025. Here are WPI’s English scores, test-optional policy, the $84,690 cost for 2026-27, need-aware aid and merit awards, and the 1 Nov 2026 to 1 Feb 2027 deadlines.

WPI admission requirements for international students follow the usual US pattern: you apply through the Common App, send your school record, and, if English is not your first language, show WPI’s recommended English scores (IELTS 7.0, Duolingo 125, PTE 61 or TOEFL 90 on the old scale). The SAT and ACT are optional. Worcester Polytechnic Institute admitted 62% of all first-year applicants for fall 2025, but only 39% of international applicants, and the 2026-27 tuition, fees and housing come to about $84,690 a year before books and personal costs.

For aid, WPI is need-aware for international students. It offers merit scholarships to every admitted applicant automatically, a limited number of need-based grants (usually $5,000 to $25,000), and up to two International Leadership Awards a year that can reach full tuition. The fall 2027 deadlines are 1 November 2026 for Early Decision I and Early Action I, 5 January 2027 for the second rounds and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision. I checked all of this on WPI’s own pages and its 2025-26 Common Data Set on 29 October 2026.

WPI ranking and key numbers

In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition (September 2026), WPI rose 11 places among National Universities.

WPI acceptance rate and class profile

WPI’s Common Data Set 2025-26 gives a full breakdown of the class that entered in fall 2025. The overall rate looks friendly, but the international numbers are a different picture.

GroupAppliedAdmittedEnrolledAdmit rate
All first-year applicants12,3557,6471,30061.9%
International applicants1,7006626638.9%
Early Decision397310Not given78.1%
Early Action8,8826,15185869.3%

WPI also offered 2,293 applicants a waitlist place and admitted 460 from it. Among enrolled students who reported a GPA, the average was 3.9 and 60% had a 4.0; 51% of those who reported class rank were in the top tenth of their class. WPI rates the rigour of your school record and your GPA as very important, and class rank, recommendations, extracurricular activities and character as important. Test scores and the essay are considered.

An international admit rate of about 39% means WPI is selective for students from abroad, mostly because the aid budget is limited and admission is need-aware.

WPI tuition for international students (2026-27)

WPI charges international students the same rate as everyone else. Its Common Data Set lists the 2026-27 charges below. WPI’s public cost page had not yet posted a full 2026-27 budget when I checked, so the books and personal figures come from the latest budget it shows (2024-25).

ItemAmount
Tuition (2026-27)$63,936
Required fees (2026-27)$1,502
Room and board (2026-27)$19,252
Subtotal billed by WPI$84,690
Books, supplies and equipment (2024-25 budget)$1,200
Personal expenses (2024-25 budget)$1,200
Student health insurance if you have no qualifying plan (2025-26 rate)$2,681

Plan on roughly $87,000 to $90,000 for the first year once insurance and personal costs are added, before flights.

WPI scholarships for international students

WPI reads international applications need-aware, so asking for aid can affect your chances. The international aid page says competitive applicants are usually able to contribute at least $25,000 a year. Here is what is on offer:

AwardAmountHow you get it
Merit scholarships (including the Presidential Scholarship)Amounts vary; renewable for four yearsAutomatic review of every admitted applicant
IB Diploma guaranteeAt least $25,000 a yearAdmitted first-year students with an IB score of 40 or higher
Need-based international grantUsually $5,000 to $25,000 a yearCSS Profile by the admission deadline; limited number
WPI International Leadership AwardCombined with other aid to cover need up to full tuition and fees; may add a $12,000 housing allowanceUp to two incoming international students a year; no separate application
NCSSS Scholarship$15,000 or more a year (up to 5 students)First-year applicants; rolling review January to April

Combined merit and need awards are possible but rare, according to WPI. In 2025-26, 325 international undergraduates received WPI aid, with an average award of $26,749. That average shows what most students should expect: a meaningful discount, not a full ride.

  1. CSS Profile: file it with your admission application if you need aid. WPI’s CSS code is 3969.
  2. No aid needed: skip the CSS Profile and, once admitted, send WPI’s Certification of Finances form showing you can pay the full cost.
  3. Renewal: grants renew each year while you stay in good academic standing, and returning students do not reapply.

Aid applicants

WPI is need-aware and does not promise to meet full need. If you ask for aid, show the strongest academic file you can and be realistic about the $25,000 a year WPI expects most international admits to contribute.

WPI admission requirements for international students

  1. Application: the Common App. WPI’s apply page lists no other platform for first-year students.
  2. School records: transcripts and, where you have them, national exam results or predicted grades.
  3. Recommendations: rated important in WPI’s admission factors; send them through the Common App.
  4. Personal essay: the main Common App essay.
  5. English test: required unless you qualify for the waiver below.
  6. CSS Profile: only if you are applying for need-based aid.
  7. Age: you must be at least 16 by move-in day in August.

Testing policy

WPI is test-optional. It ran a test-blind pilot from 2021 to 2024, then went back to test-optional, partly because international enrolment fell during the pilot and test scores carry more weight when reading international files. If you have a strong SAT or ACT, sending it helps WPI judge a school system it may not know well.

English requirements

TestWPI recommended minimum
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)90, with no section below 20
TOEFL iBT (taken on or after 21 January 2026)4.5
IELTS Academic7.0, with no band below 6.5
Duolingo English Test125
PTE Academic61

InitialView and Vericant interviews are optional extras and cannot replace a test. Citizens of an English-speaking country who spent four years at an English-speaking high school may be exempt; confirm with the admissions office.

WPI’s page gives the dates without a year; the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle. File the CSS Profile by the same deadline as your application. Early Action I is the most popular route (69% admitted in 2025) and is not binding, which suits aid applicants who need to compare offers.

How to write a strong WPI application essay

WPI does not list its own supplemental essay on its apply page, so your Common App essay carries the writing part of the file. WPI’s teaching is built around projects: students work in teams on real problems, many of them abroad. Your essay should show that you already learn this way.

  • Pick one project you built, fixed or organised, and walk through a real problem you hit and how you solved it.
  • Show teamwork. WPI’s model depends on it, so mention who you worked with and what you did yourself.
  • Connect the project to the people it was for. WPI likes applicants who care about how technology is used.
  • Use the Additional Information section to explain your grading system if it is not well known.

A short sample opening, for illustration only:

“Our solar dryer failed on its first morning because we forgot that tomatoes sweat. By the third version, the women at my aunt’s market stall were drying twice as much produce, and I had learned more about airflow than any textbook had taught me.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Application portal: WPI confirms receipt and lists missing documents.
  2. Decision: released on the dates in the table above.
  3. Merit and aid: merit is decided with admission. International Leadership Award winners are told by email no later than mid-April and must confirm enrolment by 1 May.
  4. Deposit: by 15 January (ED I), 15 March (ED II) or 1 May (EA and RD).
  5. Financial proof: the Certification of Finances form, which WPI uses to issue your I-20.
  6. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee, attend the F-1 interview and arrive for orientation in August.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying Early Decision while needing aid. ED is binding, and WPI does not meet full need.
  • Sending a TOEFL below WPI’s section minimum. The old-scale rule asked for no section below 20.
  • Filing the CSS Profile after the admission deadline. WPI wants it with the application.
  • Assuming the overall 62% admit rate applies to you. The international rate was about 39%.
  • Forgetting the health insurance charge, which appears on your bill unless you prove equal coverage.

Costs WPI aid usually does not cover

  • Flights to Boston and on to Worcester, and home again.
  • F-1 visa and SEVIS fees.
  • Health insurance ($2,681 in 2025-26) if your plan is not accepted.
  • Extra travel or living costs for a project at one of WPI’s off-campus project centres, which are budgeted separately.
  • Winter clothing and setup costs in the first month.

On-campus jobs typically pay $1,500 to $2,500 over a school year. WPI also lets international students in good standing do co-op placements, which typically pay $21,000 to $26,000 per assignment, though placement is not guaranteed.

WPI graduate admissions for international students

Graduate applicants apply directly to WPI’s graduate school. Most programmes ask for TOEFL 84, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115; business master’s programmes ask for TOEFL 90, IELTS 7 or Duolingo 115, and the business PhD asks for TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.5. You can request a waiver if you completed two years of full-time study in an English-speaking country within the last five years, or if you have three or more years of work experience in the US. Paper IELTS reports are not accepted.

Majors and campus life at WPI

WPI is organised into four schools and is best known for engineering, robotics engineering, computer science, data science and game design, with business and the sciences alongside. Every undergraduate completes major projects under the WPI Plan, and many do one at a project centre outside the US. The calendar uses short terms, which lets students take fewer courses at a time.

The campus is in Worcester, the second-largest city in Massachusetts, about an hour west of Boston. It is quieter and cheaper than Boston, with a large student population spread across several colleges.

Who should apply to WPI

Apply if you want hands-on engineering or computing in a mid-sized school where project work starts early, and if your family can pay a large share of the cost. IB students with 40 or more points get a guaranteed $25,000 a year, which makes WPI one of the better value picks for them. If you need almost the full cost covered, WPI is a reach on aid grounds even if your grades are strong; balance your list with full-need colleges such as Amherst and outside awards from our US scholarships list.
