The Wisconsin MBA, the full-time MBA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Wisconsin School of Business, is ranked No. 48 by U.S. News in its 2026 Best Business Schools list and is one of the best-funded MBAs in that range. Wisconsin reports that 100% of eligible students received a scholarship in 2023 to 2025, and nonresident students averaged $47,599 in their first year against nonresident tuition of $51,413.28 for 2026-27. The Class of 2027 averaged 675 on the GMAT.
The early decision and Round 1 dates have passed, so your Deadline is Round 2 on 7 January 2027. Wisconsin calls it the scholarship priority deadline. Round 3 on 25 March 2027 is the last round for international applicants living outside the U.S. This guide covers the Wisconsin MBA requirements, acceptance rate, essays and video essay, English rules, the STEM option, costs, assistantships and salaries.

Wisconsin MBA class profile and acceptance rate
| Class of 2027 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Students enrolled | 79 |
| Average GMAT (previous version) | 675 |
| GMAT 80% range | 630 to 700 |
| Average GPA | 3.42 |
| Average work experience | 4.2 years |
| Average age | 28 |
| Degrees in business | 34 students |
| Degrees in social sciences | 32 students |
| Degrees in science | 21 students |
| Degrees in engineering | 8 students |
| Degrees in humanities | 5 students |
The degree counts add to more than 79, so some students hold more than one degree. Wisconsin’s class profile page does not give the share of international students, the countries represented or the gender split.
Poets&Quants reported in August 2026 that Wisconsin admitted 50.2% of applicants for the class that entered in 2025, close to 48.8% the year before, and that 52% of admitted applicants enrolled. Wisconsin does not publish a separate rate for international applicants.
Wisconsin MBA requirements for international students
- Bachelor’s degree: the equivalent of a four-year U.S. degree. Unofficial transcripts at application, certified copies once admitted.
- Work experience: at least two years of full-time professional work.
- Resume: Wisconsin provides a template and a guide.
- Two essays and an optional supplemental statement.
- Video essay: required, recorded in the portal within 72 hours of submitting.
- Recommendation: one required, up to two accepted, on your leadership or management potential. Your file is not reviewed until it arrives.
- GMAT or GRE: required unless you receive a waiver. Wisconsin prefers the GMAT, taken within five years. Codes: GMAT 79K-2S-72, GRE 1846.
- English test unless you qualify for a waiver.
- Application fee: $75 plus $6 for international applicants, paid by card.
The GMAT waiver
You can request a test waiver if you meet all three baseline conditions: an accredited bachelor’s degree, at least three years of full-time professional work, and a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or its international equivalent. You also need at least two signs of quantitative readiness, such as a quantitative degree, a GPA of 3.2 or higher, three or more years in an analytical role, a quantitative certification or an MBA prep course. Submit the request at least two weeks before your deadline with your resume, unofficial transcripts and a 250-word Quantitative Readiness Statement. Decisions take up to 10 business days.
Wisconsin strongly encourages applicants below a 3.0 GPA to test. Since scholarships here are large and merit-based, I would sit the GMAT even if you qualify for the waiver.
English requirements
| Test | Wisconsin minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL | 92 for tests before 21 January 2026; 5.0 for tests after that date (code 1846) |
| IELTS | 7.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 125 |
Tests must be taken within two years of your start date. You can request a waiver if your four-year undergraduate degree and/or master’s degree, at least eight semesters in total, was taught in English, or if you have worked at least two years for a company where English is the only working language. Graduates of English-medium universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and similar systems can use the first route. In the application, choose the TOEFL test type and select “Request a Waiver”.

Wisconsin MBA essays 2026-2027
| Response | Prompt (summary) | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Essay 1 | Your professional journey, your immediate post-MBA goals and longer-term impact, why now is the right time for an MBA, and how Wisconsin will act as a catalyst | 150 to 300 words |
| Essay 2 | A professional challenge or setback, how you responded, and how the lessons will shape what you contribute to the community | 300 words |
| Supplemental statement (optional) | Anything not covered elsewhere | 300 words |
| Video essay | Two randomized questions, recorded in the portal | Within 72 hours of submitting |
Essay 1: goals and why Wisconsin
You have at most 300 words for four questions, so give each about 70 words. Start with the job you want right after the MBA, add one line on the longer-term impact, explain why now (a promotion ceiling, a skills gap, a career switch), then name the Wisconsin features that help. Wisconsin’s careers page groups recruiters by career pathway, so link your goal to the pathway you would join.
For illustration: “I want to lead brand strategy for a consumer goods company in the U.S. Midwest. Three years of selling detergent across northern Nigeria taught me how people choose products; Wisconsin’s MBA is where I learn how companies decide what to make.”
Essay 2: setback
Pick a real professional setback with a clear cost: a lost client, a failed launch, a project that ran late. Spend a third of the words on what happened and two thirds on what you did and what changed in how you work. End with how that lesson will show up in a team of fewer than 100 classmates.
For illustration: “Our first mobile payments pilot in Kumasi signed up 4,000 users and kept 300. I had designed it.”
Supplemental statement and video
Use the supplemental statement for a GPA under 3.0, a gap in work or an unusual recommender choice. For the video, practise answering common questions such as why an MBA, a team conflict or a leadership moment in about one minute, then record within the 72-hour window in a quiet room with steady light.
The Wisconsin interview
Interviews are by invitation after the first review. You speak with a member of the admissions committee, in person or virtually. Prepare a short career walk-through, your post-MBA goal, the career pathway you would choose and why, and two leadership stories, since the recommendation also asks about leadership.
What the admissions committee looks for
- At least two years of professional work; the class averages about four.
- Academic readiness, shown by a GMAT or GRE score or a strong waiver case.
- Leadership or management potential, which the recommendation is asked to address.
- A clear sense of why now and why Wisconsin.
- How you handle setbacks, the subject of Essay 2.
Wisconsin MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027
| Cost item (2026-27, nine months) | Nonresident |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $51,413.28 |
| Segregated fees | $1,699.48 |
| Programme fee (first year only, one-time) | $400 |
| Room and board | $16,956 |
| Books and supplies | $700 |
| Miscellaneous | $6,500 |
| Computer (one-time estimate) | $1,500 |
| Travel | $3,500 |
| Total cost of attendance | $82,668.76 |
Residents pay $27,764.80 in tuition. International students pay the nonresident rate. The cost of attendance covers nine months, so add summer living costs between the two years.
Costs not covered by a scholarship
- Room and board, books and personal costs, about $24,000 of the budget above.
- Summer living costs during your internship.
- Health insurance if your package does not include it.
- Flights, SEVIS fee, visa fee and test fees.
- Extra funds for a spouse or children on your I-20.
Wisconsin MBA scholarships and assistantships for international students
Wisconsin considers every applicant for scholarships based on the merits of the application, and awards are announced with admission. Its admissions and tuition pages do not exclude international students. Data for awards made in 2023 to 2025:
| Funding (2023 to 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Eligible students who received a scholarship | 100% |
| Average first-year award, nonresident | $47,599 |
| Average second-year award, nonresident | $59,140 |
| Share of first-year tuition covered on average | About 93% |
| Students with a second-year assistantship | 71% |
| Assistantship stipend | $20,000 to $30,000, plus full tuition and health insurance eligibility |
Students fully sponsored by an employer, government or military are left out of the 100% figure. Assistantships require 13 to 20 hours of work a week, and only a limited number of first-year students receive one. Wisconsin also lists a Distinguished Graduate Fellowship with a one-year full tuition award and an estimated $24,545 stipend over nine months.
International students cannot get U.S. federal loans. Wisconsin points them to loans in their home country and to International Student Services; it does not mention Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. For outside awards, see our guide to American scholarships for international students.
STEM designation and OPT
Wisconsin offers a STEM-designated full-time MBA, and you must select that option to qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after your first 12 months of OPT. If you plan to work in the U.S. after graduating, choose the STEM option when you apply and confirm it again when you enrol.
Wisconsin MBA salary and employment
Wisconsin’s careers page reports these figures for its latest class, labelled Class of 2026:
- 84% received offers within three months of graduation.
- Average base salary of $122,886.
- Average signing bonus of $31,204, received by 70% of the class.
- Average base plus signing bonus of $154,090.
| Industry | Share of hires | Average base |
|---|---|---|
| Financial services | 25% | $157,083 |
| Technology | 13% | $127,986 |
| Consumer packaged goods | 13% | $107,143 |
| Health care | 12% | $116,250 |
| Real estate | 12% | $113,500 |
By function, finance and accounting took 30% of hires and marketing and sales 23%. About 59% of graduates took jobs in the Midwest. Wisconsin does not publish a median salary or a breakdown for international students.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Forgetting the video essay. It must be recorded within 72 hours after you submit.
- Leaving the recommendation late. Wisconsin will not review your file until it arrives.
- Sending a waiver request too late. It must go in at least two weeks before the deadline.
- Writing past 300 words on Essay 1 or Essay 2.
- Not selecting the STEM option, then losing access to the 24-month OPT extension.
- Waiting for Round 3 when Round 2 is the scholarship priority round.
Who should apply to Wisconsin, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you have two to six years of experience, want a well-funded MBA with a STEM route, and are aiming for finance, consumer goods, technology, health care or real estate roles, especially in the Midwest. The scholarship data make Wisconsin one of the lowest-cost options in the top 50 for international students who are admitted.
Think twice if you want a coastal finance or consulting hub, a large international community you can see in published numbers, or if your GMAT is well below the 630 to 700 range and you cannot raise it.
