Pitt Katz MBA ranking

U.S. News ranked Katz No. 48 among full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 edition, released on 7 April 2026, in a tie with Arkansas Walton and Wisconsin. The University of Pittsburgh also runs a separate undergraduate admissions process; our University of Pittsburgh guide for international students covers it.

Pitt Katz MBA acceptance rate and class profile

Poets&Quants reported in August 2026 that Katz admitted 49.3% of applicants for the class that entered in 2025, up from 28.6% the year before. About a third of admitted applicants enrolled. A rate near one in two makes Katz one of the more reachable schools in the top 50, especially if your file is solid but not outstanding.

Katz’s own admissions pages do not publish a class profile. Poets&Quants’ school profile, updated in October 2026, lists these figures without naming the class year:

Full-time MBA profile (Poets&Quants)Figure
Full-time enrolment45
Median GMAT600
Median GRE311
Average GPA3.56
International44%
Women38%
Average age28

The same profile gives an acceptance rate of 34%, which differs from the 49.3% in the newer Poets&Quants analysis. Treat both as guides and ask Katz admissions for its current profile. With about 45 full-time students, this is a small class, so you will know everyone.

Pitt Katz MBA requirements for international students

  1. Online application through Katz’s graduate admissions portal.
  2. Application fee: $50, paid online, non-refundable.
  3. Two essays: prompts appear in the application.
  4. Resume.
  5. Two letters of recommendation.
  6. Transcripts from every university attended.
  7. Degree certificate: required from international students only.
  8. English test: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo for international students.
  9. GMAT or GRE: optional, but encouraged for international full-time applicants. Codes: GMAT DPZ-M5-46, GRE 4657. Katz no longer accepts the GRE at-home exam.
  10. Interview: required, in person or on Zoom.

Test-optional, with conditions

Katz is test-optional for all programmes and uses no cut-off score. Applicants who do not meet at least one of two criteria are encouraged to send a score: an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 with a B average in six or more quantitative credits, or a graduate or professional degree. Katz also encourages international full-time applicants to test. Many African and Asian grading systems do not convert neatly to a U.S. GPA, so I would send a GMAT or GRE score unless you already hold a master’s degree.

English requirements

TestMinimumKatz recommends
TOEFL (taken on or after 21 January 2026)4.0 overall, every subscore 4.0 or higherNot stated on the new scale
TOEFL (taken before 21 January 2026)80100
IELTS6.57.0
Duolingo English Test125130

Katz’s admissions information lists the English test as required for international students and does not describe a waiver for applicants from English-speaking countries. Aim for the recommended scores rather than the minimums. TOEFL code: 2927.

Pitt Katz MBA deadlines 2026-2027

Katz lists these dates for fall entry without a year attached. For the class starting in August 2027, they fall as below.

RoundApplication deadlineNote
Early Advantage (closed)15 October 2026Decision by 15 November
Round One15 January 2027Decision within 10 weeks of the deadline
Scholarship considerationApply by 1 February 2027Automatic merit review, no separate form
International Final15 April 2027Last date for international applicants
Domestic Final15 July 2027Domestic applicants only

Katz says it must receive the application and every component by the deadline for your file to be considered in that round. Admission decisions come within 10 weeks of the round’s deadline.

International applicants

Apply by 15 January 2027. You are then inside the scholarship window, and a decision within about 10 weeks leaves time for the I-20 and visa before the August start. An April application can mean a June decision and a rushed visa process.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Book TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo and aim for the recommended score.
  2. Decide on the GMAT or GRE: test if you lack a 3.25 GPA with strong quantitative grades or a graduate degree.
  3. Ask two recommenders, ideally current or recent supervisors.
  4. Draft both essays once you see the prompts in the portal.
  5. Upload your resume, transcripts and degree certificate.
  6. Pay the $50 fee and submit by 15 January 2027, with every item complete.
  7. Interview: in person in Pittsburgh or on Zoom.
  8. After admission: check your decision letter for any scholarship, then send financial documents for the I-20.

Pitt Katz MBA essays

Katz asks for two essays but does not publish the prompts or word limits on its admissions pages; they appear in the application. Whatever the exact wording, plan one essay around your career goals and why Katz, and keep the second for a different side of you, such as leadership, a setback or what you would add to a class of about 45.

Tips that fit a small programme:

  • Name Pittsburgh employers or sectors that match your goal. Poets&Quants’ profile shows health care, technology and consulting among the main destinations, and Pittsburgh is home to UPMC, PNC and Kraft Heinz.
  • Use numbers from your work: revenue, cost savings, team size.
  • Do not repeat your resume. The essays are where the committee meets you.
  • Have someone with strong written English read both essays before you submit.

For illustration: “At the hospital group where I work in Kumasi, I built the first dashboard that showed how long patients waited for surgery. The board used it to add a theatre shift, and waiting times fell. I want to do that work at a U.S. health system, and Pittsburgh has one of the largest.”

The Katz interview

The interview is required for admission and is evaluative. Katz holds interviews in person or on Zoom and sends details with the invitation. Prepare a two-minute summary of your career, a clear goal after the MBA, two examples of leading or solving a problem, and reasons for Katz and Pittsburgh. Ask one or two real questions about the programme at the end.

What the admissions committee looks for

  • About two years of professional work after your bachelor’s degree. Katz calls this a guideline, not an absolute rule.
  • Evidence you can handle quantitative courses, from grades, a graduate degree or a test score.
  • Strong English, shown by the test and the interview.
  • A clear goal that fits Katz’s programme and the Pittsburgh job market.

Pitt Katz MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027

Cost item (2026-27, two terms)Out-of-state students
Tuition$63,856
Mandatory fees$2,006
Housing$10,374
Food$6,118
Miscellaneous personal expenses$3,304
Transportation$1,114
Books and supplies$584
Loan fees$218
Estimated total (our sum)$87,574

Pitt publishes each line but not the total; the $87,574 is our addition of its figures. Pennsylvania residents pay $35,554 in tuition. The programme has 45 credits, so check with Katz how many terms you will be billed for at the full-time rate before you build your budget.

Costs not covered by tuition

  • Health insurance, if you do not have a plan the university accepts.
  • Summer living costs if your internship is unpaid or away from Pittsburgh.
  • Winter clothing; Pittsburgh winters are cold.
  • Flights, SEVIS fee, visa fee and test fees.
  • Money for dependants who come with you.

Pitt Katz MBA scholarships for international students

Katz says tuition scholarships are the main source of aid for incoming full-time students. They are merit-based, come in various amounts, are applied directly to tuition, and every admitted full-time applicant is reviewed automatically. You learn about any award in your admission letter. To be considered you must apply by 1 February for the full-time MBA.

Katz does not name MBA scholarships or publish amounts, and it does not say whether any award is closed to international students. Its “Master Your Path” alumni scholarship is for MS programmes only.

On loans, Katz says domestic and international students can apply for private education loans, but international students usually need a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as cosigner. It does not mention Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. For outside funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

Katz describes several of its MS programmes as STEM-designated, but the MBA pages I checked do not say the full-time MBA itself carries a STEM designation. Plan on 12 months of standard OPT after graduation, and ask admissions in writing about STEM options, including dual degrees with a STEM master’s, if you need the 24-month extension.

Pitt Katz MBA salary and employment

Katz does not publish a current employment report on the admissions pages I checked. Poets&Quants’ school profile, citing the 2025 reporting year, gives:

  • Average base salary: $98,432.
  • Median base salary: $88,523.
Industry (2025, Poets&Quants)Share
Consulting22%
Health care17%
Technology17%
Manufacturing11%
Transportation and logistics11%
Energy, financial services, government and hospitality6% each

The profile does not give the share employed at three months or name the employers that hired the class.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Treating test-optional as test-free. Katz encourages international full-time applicants to send a score.
  • Applying after 1 February and losing scholarship consideration.
  • Missing a component. Katz says every part must arrive by the round deadline.
  • Aiming for the English minimum instead of the recommended score.
  • Forgetting the degree certificate, which only international applicants must send.
  • Budgeting only for tuition when the full estimate is close to $88,000 a year.

Who should apply to Pitt Katz, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want a small, personal MBA in a city with large health care, technology and finance employers, have around two to five years of experience, and like the idea of a school where nearly half the class is international. The low fee and test-optional policy make it an easy addition to your list.

Think twice if you need confirmed STEM OPT, published scholarship amounts before you apply, or a large class with a big alumni network in one industry.
