Barnard College admission requirements for international students include the Common App with Barnard’s two required supplement questions, official transcripts and national exam results, a counselor report and two teacher letters, and a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score unless you qualify for a waiver. Competitive applicants usually have at least 105 on the TOEFL iBT, 7.5 on IELTS or 135 on Duolingo. SAT and ACT scores are optional for the 2027 entry cycle.
Barnard is one of the most selective colleges in the United States: about 8.8% of applicants were admitted in the 2024-25 cycle, and nearly 11,000 students applied for the Class of 2030. It meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students, but it is need-aware for non-US citizens, so asking for aid affects your chances. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closes on 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 1 January 2027. I checked every figure here on Barnard’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Barnard College ranking
Barnard appears in the U.S. News National Liberal Arts Colleges list. I could not confirm its exact position in the 2027 edition, published in September 2026, from a source I could load, so check the U.S. News page before you quote a number. For most applicants the Columbia link matters more than the rank: Barnard is an undergraduate women’s college next to Columbia University in Manhattan, and its students can take Columbia classes.
Barnard acceptance rate and Class of 2030 profile
Barnard did not publish an acceptance rate for the Class of 2030. Its most recent Common Data Set figures (2024-25), as compiled by the Koppelman Group, give the picture below.
| Admission cycle | Applications | Admitted | Acceptance rate | Early Decision rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 | 11,836 | 1,046 | 8.8% | 25.6% |
| 2023-24 | 11,803 | 940 | 8.0% | 27.1% |
| 2021-22 | 10,395 | 1,192 | 11.5% | 33.4% |
For the Class of 2030, admitted in March 2026, Barnard shared these details.
| Measure | Class of 2030 (admitted students) |
|---|---|
| Applications | 10,763 (Barnard described it as nearly 11,000) |
| Countries represented | 58 |
| Average SAT | 1500 |
| Average ACT | 34 |
| Top 10% of their class (of those reporting rank) | 94% |
| First-generation college students | 25% |
| Intended majors named | 46 |
Across the college, international students made up 16% of the student body in fall 2024, from 60 countries. Barnard does not publish an international admit rate. The Early Decision rate is about three times the overall rate, but ED is binding, and for an international student needing aid that is a serious commitment.
Barnard tuition for international students (2026-27)
International students pay the same charges as US students. These are Barnard’s 2026-27 budget lines for a first-year student living on campus, for the year running from 8 September 2026 to 3 May 2027.
| Cost item (2026-27) | First-year amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $73,120 |
| Fees | $2,472 |
| Housing | $14,054 |
| Meals (Platinum Plan, assigned to first-years) | $9,204 |
| Books and supplies | $1,200 |
| Personal expenses | $1,830 |
| Travel to and from home | $1,070 |
| Loan fee (if applicable) | $50 |
| Total of the lines above (my sum) | $103,000 |
Barnard’s page does not print a total, so the last row is my addition. Student health insurance is not included in the fees and comes on top, and the $1,070 travel line is a US figure; a flight from Accra, Nairobi or Karachi to New York costs more. Barnard also says its Net Price Calculator and MyinTuition estimator are not meant for international students, and asks international families to contact the Financial Aid Office instead.
Barnard scholarships for international students: how aid works
- Need-aware for non-US citizens: US citizens and permanent residents are admitted need-blind; international applicants are not, so your aid request is weighed with your application.
- Full demonstrated need: Barnard meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students who qualify.
- What the package contains: a mix of grants, loans and campus jobs. Barnard does not say on these pages that international packages are loan-free.
- Need-based only: Barnard’s aid pages describe need-based aid and do not list merit scholarships for international students.
- Whole-family picture: Barnard considers all sources of income and assets.
Barnard does not publish how many international students receive aid each year. Given its selectivity and need-aware policy, I would treat aid for international students as limited and apply to several colleges with stronger international aid records alongside it.
How to apply for Barnard financial aid as an international student
- Submit the Common App: Barnard then emails you a link to its applicant portal, where your personal financial aid checklist appears.
- Complete the CSS Profile online: this is the main aid form. Applicants from Benin, Cameroon, Cuba, Ghana, Iran, Nigeria, North Korea, Sudan and Togo, or anyone who cannot complete the CSS Profile online, may submit the international student financial aid application form instead.
- Upload parent income documents: 2024 income, translated into US dollars. A tax return works, or a signed employer letter on company letterhead listing wages, bonuses and benefits and saying whether the figure is before or after tax.
- Use the portal: Barnard does not use IDOC, so upload everything through the portal and check the checklist; it can grow as your documents are reviewed.
Barnard’s aid page lists 1 November for Early Decision and 15 January for Regular Decision aid documents. Questions go to finaid@barnard.edu.
Barnard admission requirements for international students: the full application
| Item | What Barnard asks for |
|---|---|
| Application | Common App (QuestBridge for QuestBridge applicants) |
| Application fee | $75; waivers through Common App, NACAC, SAT or ACT forms, or a counselor letter |
| Writing supplement | Two required answers: 50 words and 200 to 250 words |
| Transcripts | Official records for each year of secondary school, sent by your school; certified English translations if needed |
| National or board exams | Results (for example WAEC, KCSE or CBSE), plus the name and date of any certificate you are still waiting for |
| Recommendations | Counselor report and two teacher letters from core subjects; up to two optional extra letters |
| SAT or ACT | Optional; self-reporting allowed; superscored |
| English test | TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo unless waived |
| Interview | Barnard offers none; optional InitialView or Vericant video for international applicants |
Do not send certificates or copies of certificates, academic or otherwise; Barnard asks applicants not to. Citizenship is not a requirement, and Barnard encourages students to apply whatever their immigration status.
Testing policy
Barnard is test-optional for the 2027 first-year cycle. You can self-report SAT or ACT scores in the Common App or the applicant portal, and Barnard superscores both. The ACT science and writing sections are not required. If you enrol, you send official scores then. With an admitted average of 1500 on the SAT, I would only submit a score at or above that level.
English requirements
| Test | Score competitive applicants usually have |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (before 20 January 2026) | 105 or higher |
| TOEFL iBT (from 20 January 2026, new scale) | 5.5 or higher |
| IELTS | 7.5 or higher |
| Duolingo English Test | 135 or higher |
Barnard accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and IELTS Indicator but not TOEFL Essentials. Scores must be less than two years old. It does not use TOEFL MyBest scores or superscore any English test; it looks at section scores and the highest total from a single sitting, and it asks you to send all scores.
You can skip the English test if any of these applies:
- English is one of your first languages.
- All of your secondary schooling was taught in English.
- You are taking or have completed the IB Diploma or A Levels taught in English.
- You scored 700 or more in SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or 29 or more in ACT English or Reading.
If the waiver is not already shown in your portal, email admissions@barnard.edu after you apply.

How to write the Barnard supplemental essays
Barnard’s 2026-27 supplement has two required parts.
| Question (summarised) | Length | What I would do |
|---|---|---|
| A bold question you are curious about, and why | 50 words maximum | Ask a real, specific question in the first sentence and give one reason it matters to you. No preamble. |
| A woman, real or fictional, whose views or problem-solving differ from yours but who brings people together, and the lesson you would bring to Barnard | 200 to 250 words | Choose someone you actually know or have read closely, show one moment where you disagreed with her, and end on what you would do differently in a Barnard seminar or club. |
The second essay is about difference, so pick a woman you genuinely clashed with, such as an aunt, a teacher or a team captain, rather than a famous figure everyone admires. Readers want to see how you handle disagreement.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “My aunt Ngozi chairs the women’s meeting in our village, and she has never once raised her voice in it. I raise mine often. When the meeting split over whether to spend the harvest levy on a borehole or the school roof, I made a strong speech and lost half the room. She asked one question of each side and had both by evening.”
What happens after you apply
- Portal link: Barnard emails you a portal link after you submit.
- Checklists: upload missing admission and aid items as they appear.
- Grades: your counselor sends first-quarter grades (ED) or mid-year grades (RD).
- Decision: mid-December for ED, late March for RD, with an aid offer for admitted aid applicants.
- Reply and visa: RD admits have until 1 May to decide. Once you enrol, Barnard issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa based on your aid offer and family funds.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the 1 November ED date: many applicants plan around 15 November and lose the early round.
- Sending certificates: Barnard asks you not to. Send exam results and transcripts.
- Superscoring English tests in your head: Barnard takes the best single sitting, and MyBest scores do not count.
- Sending untranslated income papers: convert figures to US dollars and say whether they are gross or net.
- Waiting for the CSS Profile when you cannot pay or access it: applicants from the countries Barnard lists, including Nigeria and Ghana, can use the alternative form.
- Applying ED without checking the numbers: ED is binding, and packages can include loans.
Costs that aid does not cover
- Before you arrive: the $75 application fee if not waived, English test fees, InitialView or Vericant fees (Barnard gives no waiver for these), the F-1 visa fee and the SEVIS fee.
- Health insurance: not part of the fees.
- Loans: if your package includes a loan, you repay it after graduating.
- New York prices: personal spending in Manhattan tends to run above the $1,830 estimate.
- Summer and breaks: housing and food when you cannot fly home.
Majors, Columbia access and life in New York
Barnard’s campus is in Morningside Heights, next to Columbia University. Students take Barnard’s own seminars and can also enrol in Columbia courses and use Columbia’s libraries while living at a women’s college. The Class of 2030 named 46 different intended majors when they applied.
The city is the other half of the offer. Internships at museums, banks, newsrooms, hospitals and non-profits are a subway ride away during term time, which is hard to do from a rural campus. The trade-off is cost and pace: New York is expensive, and the campus is small and urban rather than green and spread out.
Graduate admissions at Barnard
Barnard admits undergraduates only. Graduate study in the same neighbourhood happens through Columbia University’s graduate and professional schools, which run their own admissions. Barnard also runs a pre-college summer programme for secondary school students, which is separate from undergraduate admission.

| Smith | Full need met; tuition-free under $150,000 income, international included | 22% (Class of 2029) | $70,460 | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II 5 Jan 2027; RD 15 Jan 2027 |

| Vassar | Need-aware; full need met | 18.6% (Class of 2028) | $76,140 | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 1 Jan 2027 |
Barnard is the most selective women’s college in this group. If you want the women’s college experience with better odds, apply to Bryn Mawr or Smith as well. For more options, see our list of the best American scholarships for international students.
Who should apply to Barnard
- Apply if: you want a women’s college with access to a major research university and New York City, your grades sit at the top of your class, and you can write sharply in very few words.
- Apply Early Decision only if: Barnard is your clear first choice and your family accepts that the aid package may include loans.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a no-loan package or merit money, or you want a quiet, rural campus.
