Tennessee Tickle Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Tennessee’s Tickle College of Engineering is tied at No. 50 in U.S. News 2026. Here are the optional GRE, the English exemption for 22 African countries, the 3.0 GPA minimum, PhD assistantships and the 15 April 2027 international deadline.

Tennessee Tickle engineering graduate admission for international students goes through the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) Graduate School first, and then your engineering department decides. The GRE is optional for every Tickle PhD and not required for master’s programmes. Non-U.S. degree holders need at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (a “B” average). Citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon and 18 other African countries are exempt from the English test. The Graduate School’s fall deadline for F-1 and J-1 applicants is 15 April 2027, though departments can set earlier dates.

The Tickle College of Engineering is tied at No. 50 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking. It sits next to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which shapes much of its research in nuclear, materials, energy and computing. PhD students on assistantships get a stipend, a tuition and fee waiver and health insurance. A self-funded master’s student should budget about $60,600 a year on UT’s 2026-27 out-of-state estimate.

Tennessee Tickle engineering ranking

Tickle College announced its No. 50 place in the 2026 U.S. News graduate engineering list, released on 7 April 2026. Several schools share that spot, including Brown, Rensselaer and the University of Dayton. The overall rank hides some strong programmes. Nuclear engineering at Tennessee has long been one of the best known in the country, helped by the partnership with nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory. If your interest is reactors, radiation detection, fusion or energy systems, Knoxville deserves a closer look than the overall number suggests.

Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering states a 3.0 minimum GPA with some exceptions. Doctoral applicants there are expected to show superior achievement in engineering, and the engineering science programme takes graduates of engineering, mathematics and the physical or biological sciences.

English test minimums and exemptions

TestGraduate School minimum
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)80 overall, with at least 20 in speaking and 20 in writing
TOEFL iBT (taken from 22 January 2026, new scale)4.5 overall, with at least 4 in speaking and writing
IELTS Academic6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
Duolingo English Test120 overall
  • Scores must be within two years of the test date when you apply.
  • Some programmes set higher minimums. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering lists TOEFL 80 and IELTS 6.5, the same as the Graduate School.
  • Citizens of countries where English is an official language are exempt. The African countries on UT’s list are Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland (Eswatini), Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • You are also exempt if you hold a U.S.-equivalent degree from an accredited institution that teaches in English. Your transcript must show the degree was awarded, and UT may ask for proof of the language of instruction.
  • PTE is not on the Graduate School’s list of accepted tests.

UT’s list is longer than most. Cameroon, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Malawi are on it, while many schools leave them off. Check your own country against the Graduate School list before you book a test.

Application fee

The Graduate School pages I checked do not state the graduate application fee, so confirm it on the online application before you pay. Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering offers a fee waiver to first-time PhD applicants, but only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. I found no fee waiver for international applicants.

Tennessee Tickle engineering deadlines for fall 2027

The Graduate School sets two dates for F-1 and J-1 visa applicants each term. The first is when your online application must be in. The second is when your file must be complete, meaning you are admitted and have sent your visa documents to the Center for Global Engagement.

TermOnline applicationFile complete
Fall 202715 April 202715 May 2027
Summer 202715 October 202615 February 2027
Spring 202815 June 20271 October 2027

The spring 2027 dates have passed, so the spring row shows the 2028 intake (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). The Graduate School says an earlier programme deadline takes priority over these dates, so ask the director of graduate studies in your department for theirs.

Apply early for funding

The 15 April date is the last day to apply, and by then most assistantships are gone. EECS sends its teaching assistant request form to admitted fall applicants in early April and fills positions by mid-summer. I would submit a Tickle PhD application by December or January if you want to be considered for funding.

PhD funding at Tennessee Tickle engineering

Most Tickle PhD students are paid through graduate research or teaching assistantships. The college describes what these include:

  • An annual stipend, paid in nine or twelve monthly instalments.
  • A waiver of tuition and maintenance fees for graduate teaching and research assistants.
  • Student health insurance.
  • Since fall 2022, no mandatory fees or differential tuition for assistantship holders; the university covers them.
  • Work of 10 or 20 hours a week. In EECS, a 10-hour teaching post can be combined with a 10-hour research post.

No page I checked gives a standard stipend amount. The best clue is the Tickle Graduate Fellowship: $5,000 a year, renewable for up to five years, given to one new student in each PhD programme. The department must bring that student’s total stipend to at least $30,000 (assistantship plus the $5,000). Ask for the exact figure in your offer letter, and whether it covers 12 months.

Named fellowships

FellowshipValueWho it is for
Tickle Graduate Fellowship$5,000 a year, up to five yearsOne new student per PhD programme, nominated by the department
Ronald Nutt Fellowship in Imaging Formation and Processing (EECS)$20,000 a year stipend, plus tuition and fees depending on endowment incomeGPA 3.5 minimum, 3.8 preferred; faculty recommendation; renewable up to three years
Min H. Kao EECS Fellowship$6,000 a year plus graduate fee waiverMaster’s or doctoral students with GPA 3.8 or higher
Robert Bodenheimer Fellowship (EECS)$12,000 a yearU.S. citizens only
Graduate School fellowships (Spivey, Dean, Yates and others)Not statedMerit based; eligibility on the Graduate School site

In EECS, research assistantships are arranged by individual faculty, so writing to professors matters. Most EECS fellowships are nominated by your adviser, and several state that citizenship is not a basis for exclusion. The Bodenheimer award is the clear exception.

Master’s funding: what to expect

Master’s students can hold assistantships when a department has them, and the Min H. Kao fellowship is open to master’s students with a 3.8 GPA. In practice, most international MS students at Tickle pay their own way, at least in the first semester. I would only accept a master’s offer without funding if you can cover the first year in full, because the visa process will ask you to prove it anyway.

Tennessee Tickle engineering tuition and cost of attendance

UT publishes a single graduate cost of attendance. These are the 2026-27 figures for an out-of-state student, which is the rate international students pay, for fall and spring.

Item (2026-27)Out-of-state
Tuition and fees$32,462
Housing and food (university housing)$19,066
Transportation$3,926
Miscellaneous personal expenses$3,042
Books, course materials, supplies and equipment$1,880
Loan fees$220
Total$60,596

The page does not list health insurance or any international student fee, so add those to your budget. Summer is also outside these figures. UT’s detailed tuition page has per-credit rates if you plan to study part time.

STEM OPT after a Tennessee engineering degree

F-1 students who finish a degree get 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Graduates of degrees whose CIP code is on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months, so up to three years of U.S. work in total. Engineering and computer science degrees normally qualify. Paid internships while studying need approval through the university’s international office, using Curricular Practical Training. Confirm your programme’s CIP code with the Center for Global Engagement before you enrol.

Admission statistics

Tickle College does not publish graduate acceptance rates or admitted student averages. The only published numbers are the minimums: a 3.0 GPA for non-U.S. bachelor’s degrees, 3.3 for graduate work, and the English scores above. Funded PhD places usually go to applicants well above these minimums.

How to contact potential PhD advisers at Tennessee

Research assistantships at Tickle come from faculty grants, and EECS tells applicants to contact faculty in their area of interest directly. A professor who wants you can also nominate you for fellowships. So the email to a potential adviser carries real weight here.

  1. Shortlist three professors: use the department research pages and Oak Ridge joint appointments. Read one recent paper from each.
  2. Write in October or November: funding decisions start long before the April deadline.
  3. Keep it short: five or six sentences covering who you are, one result from your own work, why their group and one direct question.
  4. Attach a one-page CV: include your grading scale and class of degree so the professor does not have to guess.
  5. Follow up once: after ten days, then move on.

A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I plan to apply to the UT nuclear engineering PhD for fall 2027. In my final-year project at [University] I modelled [system] using [method] and found [result], and your group’s recent paper on [topic] is the direction I want to take. Will you be taking new PhD students with research assistantship funding next year?”

How to write the Tennessee Tickle statement of purpose

Tickle departments set their own prompts in the application, but the reader is usually the faculty member who might fund you. Write for that person.

  • Start with the research problem you want to work on, in one or two sentences.
  • Describe one or two projects in detail: your own role, the tools you used and a measurable result.
  • Name two or three Tickle faculty and say in a sentence each why their work fits yours.
  • If your field links to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, say how, but keep it specific to a lab or a facility.
  • For a master’s, explain how you will pay and what you want to do after graduating.
  • Explain a weak semester or a gap in a line or two.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Booking an English test you do not need: citizens of 22 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Cameroon, are exempt.
  • Reading the 15 April date as the target: it is the latest you can apply, and funding is usually committed well before then.
  • Missing the 15 May file deadline: you must be admitted and have sent visa documents by then for a fall start.
  • Converting your CGPA yourself: report your grades as your university issued them and state the scale. The minimum is a 3.0 or a “B” average equivalent, and UT makes the conversion.
  • Applying with a three-year degree without checking: UT asks for a degree equal to a U.S. four-year bachelor’s. If yours is three years, ask the Graduate School before applying.
  • Counting on the PhD fee waiver: the Mechanical and Aerospace waiver is for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.
  • Assuming an MS comes with funding: it usually does not.

Costs not covered by funding

  • The application fee and any English test fees.
  • Health insurance and any international fee for self-funded students, which the cost estimate leaves out.
  • Visa and SEVIS fees, flights and a rent deposit in Knoxville.
  • A car or rides: UT budgets nearly $4,000 a year for transportation.
  • Summer living costs if your stipend is paid over nine months.

Who should apply to Tennessee Tickle engineering

I would put Tennessee high on the list for a PhD in nuclear engineering, materials, energy systems or high performance computing, where the Oak Ridge connection gives you facilities few universities can match. It also suits applicants from African countries that other schools do not exempt from English tests, such as Cameroon, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A self-funded master’s at about $60,600 a year is cheaper than many private schools on this list, but still a large sum, so only take it with a sponsor or savings that cover the whole programme.
