Kentucky Gatton MBA ranking

U.S. News placed Gatton at No. 53 among full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, released on 7 April 2026, in a six-way tie that includes Alabama, South Carolina and William & Mary. Gatton also points to Bloomberg Businessweek, which it says ranked the MBA No. 1 for return on investment in 2024 and 2025. Poets&Quants puts Kentucky at No. 63 in its own 2026 composite ranking.

Kentucky Gatton MBA acceptance rate and class profile

Gatton does not publish an acceptance rate. Poets&Quants, using data schools report to U.S. News, gives these figures:

IntakeAcceptance rateYield
Fall 202573.3%72.7%
Fall 202475.8%75.7%
Fall 202377.6%76.3%

About three in four applicants are admitted, and most of them enrol. That is a friendly picture for a solid applicant, though scholarship money is far more competitive than the admit itself.

Full-time MBA profile (Poets&Quants)Figure
Full-time students57
Average undergraduate GPA3.53
Median GMAT634
Median GRE311
International students3.4%

Gatton’s own MBA pages do not publish a class profile, and the Poets&Quants profile does not say which intake these figures describe. Treat them as a rough guide. The international share is very small, so you would be one of a handful of overseas students in a cohort of about 60.

Kentucky Gatton MBA requirements for international students

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. The Graduate School evaluates international transcripts itself, so you do not need WES.
  • Transcripts in the original language and in English, plus your diploma and degree certificate. Unofficial copies are fine for review; official hard copies must later be mailed to the Graduate School at 202 Gillis Building, Lexington, KY 40506-0033.
  • A resume or CV. No cover letter is needed.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from a current or former employer. (Gatton’s international page mentions one letter; follow the application.)
  • A personal statement.
  • GMAT or GRE scores, recommended for admission and required for scholarships. Use school code 1837.
  • English test scores unless you are exempt.
  • The $75 international application fee, paid through the Graduate School application.

If you have no undergraduate course in microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial accounting or managerial accounting, Gatton may ask you to complete preparatory work. After admission, every student takes a required MBA Math course ($105, about 30 hours) and a free economics tutorial.

GMAT, GRE and the test waiver

You can be admitted without a test if you meet one of Gatton’s waiver conditions:

  • At least one year of work after your degree and an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Three or more years of military service and a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • A GPA of 3.5 or higher in a business or STEM major.
  • A master’s or doctorate in business or a STEM field, or a JD.

To ask for a waiver, add a short position statement as a second answer in the personal statement section. The Graduate School must approve it. Think carefully before you skip the test: Gatton requires a GMAT or GRE score for scholarship consideration, and for most international students a scholarship is what makes the numbers work.

English requirements

TestMinimum
TOEFL iBT79 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.0 (new scale)
IELTS6.5
Duolingo English Test115, with subscores (as listed on Gatton’s international page)

Gatton may waive the English test if your bachelor’s degree is from a U.S. university or from an institution where all teaching was in English, as is the case at most universities in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Ask admissions to confirm before you skip the test. Admitted students may also be asked to interview with the university’s English language centre (CESL) or take extra English courses.

Round 21 December 202615 December 2026

Round 41 March 202714 March 2027
Final round17 April 202730 April 2027

Admission is rolling, and early applicants get priority for both places and scholarships. Scholarship decisions can continue until 1 April while funds last. A $500 non-refundable deposit reserves your seat.

For international applicants

Gatton’s international deadline is 15 January 2027, earlier than its final round, because the programme starts in summer. Your I-20 and visa interview must be done before a May or June arrival, so aim for Round 2 on 1 December 2026 if you can.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Decide on the test: Book the GMAT or GRE if you want a scholarship, or check whether you qualify for a waiver.
  2. Check English: Confirm whether your English-medium degree exempts you, or book TOEFL or IELTS.
  3. Prepare documents: Transcripts in both languages, diploma, degree certificate and resume.
  4. Ask two referees, including one employer.
  5. Write the personal statement of 500 to 700 words.
  6. Apply through the UK Graduate School portal and pay the $75 fee before 15 January 2027.
  7. Interview with the admissions committee if selected; this is also when scholarships are discussed.
  8. After admission: Pay the $500 deposit, mail official transcripts and start the I-20 process.

Kentucky Gatton MBA personal statement

Gatton’s full-time MBA page asks for a personal statement of 500 to 700 words that answers three questions:

  1. Why do you want an MBA?
  2. Why is the University of Kentucky a fit for you?
  3. What are your unique strengths?

Gatton’s international applicants page describes a shorter version (500 words or fewer) built around career goals and servant leadership: your expected growth, the mindset you need, how you will contribute as a student and alumnus, and how you will lead your employer and community. The prompts in the application decide. Whichever appears, the same material works.

How to answer

  • Why an MBA: Start with a specific problem from your work that you could not solve with your current skills, then say what you want to do next.
  • Why Kentucky: Mention the one-year format, the Problem Solving Lab projects with regional employers, or the electives you plan to take. Show that a 12-month programme suits your career and budget.
  • Unique strengths: Give one or two strengths with evidence. If servant leadership appears in the prompt, use an example where you helped a team or community succeed, not one where you took the credit.

For illustration: “In my second year as a branch operations officer in Accra, I cut account-opening time from four days to one. I want an MBA so that I can do the same thing across a whole network, and I want to do it in twelve months.”

The Kentucky Gatton interview

Selected candidates interview with the admissions committee as the final step. Gatton also interviews candidates before it finalises scholarship awards. The page does not say whether interviews are online, so ask. Prepare to explain why a one-year MBA fits you, your career target and how you will fund the programme.

What the admissions committee looks for

For scholarships, Gatton says it weighs undergraduate academic performance, GMAT or GRE results, leadership initiative and the quality of your work experience. For admission, it looks for:

  • A GPA of at least 2.75, and stronger if you want a waiver or funding.
  • Clear reasons for an MBA and for a one-year format.
  • Professional or leadership experience that shows you can handle team projects with real employers.
  • Readiness for quantitative work, shown through coursework or a test score.

Kentucky Gatton MBA tuition and cost

The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees approved these full-programme rates for 2026-27:

Student typeTuitionMandatory feesTotal
Non-resident (international)$46,834$1,644$48,478
Kentucky resident$38,291$1,644$39,935

Tuition is billed one-fifth in summer and two-fifths each in fall and spring. Gatton says tuition does not rise while you stay continuously enrolled, though fees can change. The 2027-28 schedule, which will apply to a summer 2027 start, had not been published when I checked, so expect a similar or slightly higher figure.

Costs not covered

  • Course materials, about $2,500 over the programme.
  • The $500 seat deposit (applied to student services).
  • The $105 MBA Math course.
  • Housing, food, health insurance and transport in Lexington, which Gatton does not price on its MBA page.
  • Flights, the SEVIS fee and the U.S. visa fee.

Kentucky Gatton MBA scholarships for international students

Gatton says more than half of each cohort typically receives a merit scholarship. There is no separate application: applicants who finish by the priority deadlines are considered first, and later applicants may be considered until 1 April if funds remain. A GMAT or GRE score is required for consideration, and you will be interviewed before any award is final.

Gatton’s pages do not name Prodigy Finance, MPOWER or any loan without a U.S. co-signer. For outside funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

I found no STEM designation for the Gatton MBA on its pages. Gatton did launch a STEM/MBA dual degree in 2017, but that is a five-year route for University of Kentucky STEM undergraduates. Plan on the standard 12 months of OPT after graduation, and confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with the international office.

Programme structure

The one-year MBA runs in short modules. Summer has a two-week module and an eight-week module; fall and spring each have two eight-week modules. The core covers business fundamentals, a Leadership Lab and a Problem Solving Lab with projects for regional employers. You take one career-focused elective in fall and three in spring, and a career development course (MBA 630) with coaching and interview practice runs alongside.

Kentucky Gatton MBA salary and employment

Gatton states a 90%-plus employment rate three months after graduation but does not publish salaries or a full employment report on its MBA page. U.S. News-based data on Poets&Quants dates its last detailed salary figures to 2019, which is too old to rely on. International alumni Gatton features work at Cummins, GE Lighting, Alltech, Macquarie Group, EY, Kroger and Amazon.

Ask the Graham Office of Career Management for the latest median salary and for the number of international graduates who found U.S. jobs.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Taking the test waiver and then finding you cannot be considered for a scholarship.
  • Missing the 15 January international deadline because the final round runs to April.
  • Forgetting that the programme starts in summer, so visa planning starts much earlier than for a fall MBA.
  • Sending only transcripts and leaving out the diploma or degree certificate.
  • Writing a generic statement that never explains why a one-year MBA suits you.
  • Expecting a STEM OPT extension.

Who should apply to Kentucky Gatton, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want a ranked U.S. MBA in one year, at a total programme price under $50,000, and you have clear goals and some work experience. The short format keeps living costs and time out of work low.

Think twice if you want a two-year MBA with a summer internship, a large international class, or a STEM degree for three years of OPT.
