There is no NBU cut-off mark for Finance and Banking for 2027/2028, because Nigerian British University is not advertising the course. NBU’s 2026/2027 undergraduate admissions page lists 18 programmes with their minimum UTME scores, and neither Finance and Banking nor Banking and Finance is among them. If you want a money and finance degree at NBU, the closest options on that list are Accounting and Economics, both at 160.
2027/2028 update: NBU’s programme list and cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the position on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. It comes from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice adds this course or changes anything, we will update this page.
You may have seen a Department of Finance and Banking listed for NBU. That comes from older directory lists, which Wikipedia repeats with citations to 2023 sources. I could not open JAMB’s own course list for NBU, but a course directory updated in February 2026 does not show Finance and Banking or Banking and Finance for NBU either. Until NBU itself lists the course, do not register it with NBU on JAMB.
This page sets out what each source says, what to choose instead at NBU, where you can study Banking and Finance in Abia State, and JAMB’s requirements for the course so your subjects still work elsewhere.
Does NBU offer Finance and Banking in 2027/2028?
| Source | Is Finance and Banking listed for NBU? | Date |
|---|---|---|
| NBU 2026/2027 undergraduate admissions page (official) | No. Management programmes listed are Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Mass Communication and International Relations & Diplomacy | Checked 29 October 2026 |
| JAMB course list for NBU | Could not be opened | Not verified |
| Course directory (universitycourses.ng) | No. Its 20 NBU courses include Accountancy/Accounting and Economics but no finance or banking degree | Updated February 2026 |
| Wikipedia department list | Yes, “Department of Finance and Banking” | Cites 2023 directory sites, not NBU |
| NBU’s older fee schedule | Names only the faculty (Management & Social Sciences), no departments | Mentions the 2024/2025 session |
The official page carries the most weight, and it is also the most recent. For 2026/2027, then, NBU is not admitting into Finance and Banking. Whether the department exists on paper or will start later is something only NBU can confirm. If you are set on studying at NBU, email admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask directly before you register.
For reference, the full 2026/2027 list on NBU’s page is: Data Science, Cyber Security, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Mass Communication, International Relations & Diplomacy, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Information and Communication Engineering (all 160 and above); Law, Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing Science (180 and above); and MBBS (200 and above).
Why registering Finance and Banking with NBU is risky
NBU’s 2026/2027 page says only candidates whose programme on JAMB CAPS matches the programme they pick on the NBU portal will be considered. If Finance and Banking is not on the portal’s list, there is nothing to match, and your application can stall even with a good score. The page set three conditions for every applicant:
- your JAMB CAPS details must match the details on your NBU application;
- only candidates whose programme on JAMB CAPS matches the programme on the NBU portal are considered;
- only candidates who upload all the required documents are considered.
If you have already registered Banking and Finance with NBU on JAMB, you have two clean fixes. Change your course to Accounting or Economics at NBU (check your UTME subjects fit first), or keep Banking and Finance and change your institution to a university that runs it. Our JAMB change of course and JAMB change of institution guides walk through both.
The closest NBU courses to Finance and Banking
| NBU programme | Minimum UTME (2026/2027) | Why it is close to Finance and Banking |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting | 160 | Financial reporting, audit, tax and corporate finance; the usual route into banking for many graduates |
| Economics | 160 | Money and banking, monetary policy and financial markets are core topics |
| Business Administration | 160 | Management with finance and marketing courses; broad business focus |
All three are in NBU’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and all need 160 in the UTME, ten marks above JAMB’s 150 minimum for universities. Nigerian banks recruit graduates from all three. If you want a professional finance career, I would lean towards Accounting, because the ICAN and ACCA routes follow naturally from it. If you like policy and markets more than bookkeeping, Economics fits better.
Will your UTME subjects work for those NBU courses?
Most Banking and Finance candidates sit Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and one more Social Science or commercial subject. This is how that carries over to NBU and other schools:
| If your fourth subject is | Economics at NBU | Banking and Finance elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Government, Geography, History or CRS/IRS | Fits JAMB’s Economics line (Economics, Mathematics and one of these) | Fits JAMB’s base line |
| Literature in English or French | Fits JAMB’s Economics line | Fits JAMB’s base line |
| Commerce or Principles of Accounts | Does not fit the Economics line | Fits the base line (any other subject); check the school’s remark |
For Accounting and Business Administration at NBU, check the subject line in our NBU guides linked below before you switch.
JAMB requirements for Banking and Finance
JAMB lists the course as Banking and Finance, not Finance and Banking. These are the general requirements from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB university brochure. Many schools add their own remarks, and none of the remarks names NBU.
| Requirement | JAMB brochure (general rule) |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, one Social Science subject and any other subject |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics plus two other relevant subjects |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes in Accounting or Economics plus one other subject, NCE merit in relevant subjects, ND credit, or a professional foundation exam (ICAN, ACCA and similar) |
Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and Government is the combination I recommend to anyone still deciding. It fits Banking and Finance at almost every university, Economics at NBU, and Accounting at most schools.
Where to study Banking and Finance in Abia State instead
If the course itself matters more to you than NBU, these Abia universities have Banking and Finance pages on Scholardemia, each with its own requirements and screening details:
| University | Type | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu | State | ABSU Banking and Finance cut-off mark |
| Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU), Umudike | Federal | MOUAU Banking and Finance cut-off mark |
| Clifford University, Owerrinta | Private | Clifford Banking and Finance cut-off mark |
| Spiritan University, Nneochi | Private | Spiritan Banking and Finance cut-off mark |
| Rhema University, Aba | Private | Rhema Banking and Finance cut-off mark |
For 2026/2027, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the admission deadline for public universities and 30 November 2026 for private universities, so the timing for ABSU and MOUAU differs from the private schools on this list.
Safe target score if you switch to an NBU alternative (my advice)
| Your UTME score | My read for Accounting or Economics at NBU |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for any Nigerian university. |
| 150 to 159 | Below NBU’s 160. A university that takes 150 for Banking and Finance is the better bet. |
| 160 to 174 | Eligible at NBU if your subjects and O’level fit. |
| 175 and above | A comfortable position. Aim for 180 or more in the 2027 UTME. |
This table is my judgement, not an NBU rule. NBU publishes a minimum, not the score of the last candidate admitted.
How to apply to NBU for Accounting or Economics
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: choose Accounting or Economics (not Banking and Finance) with Nigerian British University as your institution, using the subjects in the table above. First choice is the cleanest route. If NBU was not your first choice, change your institution to NBU on JAMB before its CAPS cut-off date.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. NBU accepts at most two sittings.
- Apply on the NBU portal: use application.nbu.edu.ng, the link on NBU’s admissions page. Pick the same course, the same programme you have on CAPS, and upload every document asked for. The page does not state a form price, so read the amount on the portal itself.
- Meet the closing date: for 2026/2027, NBU set 30 November 2026 as its application deadline and as the last day for candidates to move NBU onto their CAPS profile. That matches the 30 November 2026 deadline JAMB set for private universities in the 2026/2027 cycle.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. JAMB gave 2026 candidates four weeks to accept or reject an offer.
- Pay acceptance and register: NBU’s older fee schedule listed acceptance at ₦40,000. Confirm the current amount with the bursary, pay only through NBU’s official channels, then complete clearance and print your JAMB admission letter.
Confirm before you pay
NBU’s 2026/2027 page does not list Finance and Banking. Do not pay anyone who offers you an NBU Finance and Banking place, and ask the university in writing about any course that is not on its list. Ignore online adverts with private phone numbers selling NBU forms; apply only through application.nbu.edu.ng. JAMB said in May 2026 that any admission done outside CAPS is illegal, so a genuine offer must show on your CAPS page.
Admissions enquiries go to admissions@nbu.edu.ng or +234 706 075 0979 (the number in the footer of NBU’s site). When your status changes, our JAMB CAPS guide explains what each status means and how to accept.
NBU Management and Social Sciences fees
| Fee item (Management and Social Sciences) | New student | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | ₦900,000 | Per session |
| Acceptance | ₦40,000 | Paid once on admission |
| Development | ₦100,000 | Per session |
| Accommodation | ₦650,000 | Per session |
| Other charges | ₦576,000 | Exams, medical, ICT, caution fee, sports, library, e-portal, entrepreneurship and one-off items |
| Total for a new student | ₦2,266,000 | Feeding not included |
These figures come from NBU’s older fee schedule, which carries a note about a 5% discount for new students in the 2024/2025 session, so treat them as a guide and not as the 2026/2027 bill. Legit.ng reported NBU’s 2026/2027 fees in September 2026 for Computing and IT (₦951,540), Engineering (₦750,000), Law (₦1,218,037), Nursing (₦1,270,037) and Medicine (₦2,743,000), citing NBU’s tuition page, but I found no 2026/2027 figure for Management and Social Sciences. The older schedule allowed payment in three parts (50% at the start of the session, 20% before first-semester exams and 30% at the start of the second semester) and said fees are not refundable. Ask the bursary for the current Management and Social Sciences figure before you budget.
Should you wait for NBU to start Finance and Banking?
NBU is a private university at Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State, on the Aba to Port Harcourt road. It is owned by the Adorable Foundation for Educational Development, got NUC approval in April 2022 and was commissioned in February 2023. Its 2026/2027 admissions page lists five academic units: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, the College of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.
I would not wait. A new programme at a Nigerian university needs NUC approval before it admits students, and NBU has said nothing public about a finance degree for 2027/2028. If you are drawn to NBU for its location or facilities, take Accounting or Economics there; finance electives, a master’s degree or professional exams (CIBN, ICAN, CFA) can take you into banking later. If you want the Banking and Finance title on your certificate, apply to one of the universities above.

Mistakes Finance and Banking candidates make with NBU
- Trusting old course lists: directory sites still copy NBU department lists from 2023.
- Registering a course NBU is not advertising: your CAPS course must match a course on the NBU portal.
- Switching to Economics without Economics in the UTME: JAMB’s Economics line needs both Economics and Mathematics.
- Planning with 150 at NBU: its management courses need 160.
- Paying agents for a “special” place: NBU sells forms only on its own portal.
Preparing for the 2027 UTME? Start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and once results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If you registered a course or school you no longer want, our guides to JAMB change of course and JAMB change of institution explain the fix.
NBU Finance and Banking: frequently asked questions

NBU’s undergraduate admissions page does not list Finance and Banking or Banking and Finance; its management courses are Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Mass Communication and International Relations & Diplomacy.
What is the NBU cut-off mark for Finance and Banking? There is none, because the course is not on NBU’s list. Accounting and Economics, the closest NBU courses, need 160.
Can I change from Banking and Finance to Accounting at NBU? Yes, through JAMB change of course before NBU’s CAPS cut-off date, as long as your UTME subjects and O’level fit Accounting. Your CAPS course must match the course you choose on NBU’s portal.
Which universities in Abia State offer Banking and Finance? ABSU, MOUAU, Clifford University, Spiritan University and Rhema University all have Banking and Finance guides on Scholardemia. Check each school’s own requirements before you register.
Sources and updates
The programme list, the 160 minimum for NBU’s management courses, the CAPS matching and document conditions, the 30 November 2026 closing date, the portal and the contacts come from NBU’s 2026/2027 undergraduate admissions page. The Banking and Finance and Economics requirements were checked on Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure (Banking and Finance, Economics); no remark names NBU. The universitycourses.ng NBU list (updated February 2026) and the Wikipedia department list were used only to explain where the Finance and Banking name comes from. The national minimum of 150 and the 2026/2027 deadlines for public and private universities come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The fee breakdown comes from NBU’s older fee schedule. JAMB’s own course list for NBU could not be opened. Checked on 29 October 2026. I will update this page if NBU adds Finance and Banking or publishes its 2027/2028 notice.
