The NBU cut off mark for Accounting is 160 in the UTME. Nigerian British University (NBU), Asa, Abia State, lists Accounting in its 160+ group on its official 2026/2027 undergraduate admission page, 10 marks above JAMB’s national minimum of 150 for universities. NBU has published no departmental merit score for Accounting.
2027/2028 update: NBU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Accounting is on NBU’s current programme list in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. The NBU list on universitycourses.ng (updated 28 February 2026), which appears to follow JAMB’s names, shows it as “Accountancy / Accounting”. JAMB’s own NBU list would not open for me, so look for that entry under Nigerian British University when you register; it is the same course.
NBU’s page does not print subject rules for this faculty, so the subject combination below is JAMB’s brochure line plus NBU’s general O’level rule. The fees, a safe target score, the screening process, a worked example and the accreditation position follow.

NBU Accounting cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 160 | NBU minimum UTME score to apply for Accounting | Official (NBU undergraduate admission page) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for all universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026 (as labelled) | 150 in a course table, “160+” in the page header | Figures printed by Varsity.ng | Unofficial and internally inconsistent |
| 2025/2026 and earlier | No NBU figure found | NBU was licensed in April 2022 and commissioned in February 2023 | Nothing official located |
NBU is a young university, so there is very little history to read. The one figure you can rely on is the 160 on its own 2026/2027 admission page. The 150 is JAMB’s national floor, and NBU set its own bar 10 marks above it. NBU was also absent from the list of institution-declared cut-offs that News Central published after JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so the 160 came from the university’s page, not from that meeting. Treat any other Accounting figure you see on a blog as a guess.
Safe target score for Accounting at NBU (my advice)
This is my judgement, not an NBU rule. Accounting is popular everywhere, but NBU’s minimum for it is the same 160 as Business Administration and Economics. NBU publishes no applicant numbers. At a young private university, I would expect a candidate with 160 or more, the right O’level credits and a complete upload to be considered.
| Your UTME score | My read for NBU Management and Social Sciences |
|---|---|
| Below 160 | Not eligible at NBU this session |
| 160 to 169 | Eligible; realistic with a complete application and Economics credit |
| 170 to 189 | Comfortable for NBU |
| 190 and above | Strong; also worth listing an older private or public university |
For the 2027 UTME, aim for 170 or more. If a public university is your real goal for Accounting, set your target from that school’s own published figure and keep NBU as the private option.
UTME subject combination and O’level for NBU Accounting
| Requirement | Accounting at NBU |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects (JAMB) | Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject |
| Safe third subject | Government (a Social Science subject) |
| O’level (JAMB general line) | Five credits: English, Mathematics, Economics and two other relevant subjects |
| O’level (NBU general rule) | Five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects |
| Sittings | Not more than two (NBU) |
| Minimum age | 16 by 30 September 2026 |
JAMB’s line for Accounting is Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject, with Use of English compulsory. None of the remarks on the Myschool brochure page names NBU. Government is the safest third subject. Many Accounting candidates want to write Principles of Accounts; if that is your plan, confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure that it is accepted for this course before you register, because a combination JAMB does not accept is very hard to fix later.
At O’level, Economics should be one of your five credits alongside English and Mathematics. Financial Accounting and Commerce are the most useful remaining credits, since they cover the material of your first-year courses.
Direct Entry
JAMB’s general Direct Entry line is two A-level passes including Economics. NBU accepts A-level in relevant subjects, OND, HND or a first degree, with transcripts sent to the Registrar at KM 10 Aba Port Harcourt Expressway. NBU’s page still shows 1 September 2026 for transcripts, which has passed, so email admissions@nbu.edu.ng to ask what applies now. NBU has not published a list of the ND or HND courses it accepts for this programme.
How NBU screens Accounting applicants
NBU’s 2026/2027 page describes an online application with document upload. It does not announce a post-UTME test, an interview or a screening fee, and it gives no aggregate formula. A blog (AbsTechConnect, 25 May 2026) said NBU’s post-UTME form was “now on sale” but gave no price, date or portal, and cited no NBU notice. Go by the university’s own page.
| Detail | NBU 2026/2027 (official page) |
|---|---|
| Minimum UTME score | 160 for Accounting |
| Applications close | 30 November 2026 (the page calls it a Friday, but 30 November 2026 is a Monday) |
| Where to apply | application.nbu.edu.ng |
| CAPS rule | Change to NBU on CAPS by 30 November 2026 if it was not your first choice; the CAPS course must match the portal course |
| O’level | Five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects (Economics is in JAMB’s line); at most two sittings |
| Age | At least 16 by 30 September 2026 |
| Test or interview | None announced |
| Application fee | Not stated on the page |
JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities (NAN, 11 May 2026), the same day NBU’s own window closes. If you are still trying to get into NBU this session, do the CAPS change and the portal application early rather than in the final week, because NBU will only consider you once your CAPS course and your portal course match.
Worked example for Accounting applicants
NBU has not published an aggregate formula, and it announced no test. Your margin over 160 is what you can measure.
Take Chinonso, who scored 183 in English, Mathematics, Economics and Government, with credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Financial Accounting and Commerce from one sitting.
- Eligibility: 183 minus 160 = 23 above NBU’s minimum.
- Against my target: 183 minus 170 = 13 above it. Comfortable.
- O’level: all the relevant credits, one sitting.
- Paperwork: NBU as first choice, Accounting on CAPS and on the portal, all documents uploaded.
Blessing scored 161 with credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Government and Civic Education over two sittings. 161 minus 160 = 1. She is eligible, and two sittings are allowed. Her application stands or falls on a complete upload and matching CAPS details.
NBU Accounting school fees for 2026/2027
NBU’s tuition page lists fees by faculty, not by course, so Accounting pays the Management and Social Sciences figures below. They are for new first-year students in the 2026/2027 session.
| Item | Management and Social Sciences (2026/2027, first year) |
|---|---|
| Acceptance fee | ₦40,000 |
| Tuition | Not shown (the column is blank for this faculty) |
| Development levy | ₦100,000 |
| Accommodation | ₦876,000 |
| Other charges | ₦878,963 |
| Total for a first-year Management and Social Sciences student | ₦1,894,963 |
The tuition column is blank for Management and Social Sciences on NBU’s page, even though the other charges and the total are filled in. I would not assume tuition is free or folded into “other charges” without asking. Email the Bursary or admissions office and get the full figure in writing before you plan your budget. Accommodation is ₦876,000 of the total shown.
- Instalments: NBU wants full payment by the start of first semester; otherwise at least 50% of all fees at the start of the session and the balance before second semester.
- Late registration: course registration must be done within the first three weeks of resumption, and a ₦200,000 late fee applies after that.
- How to pay: through the university portals using Global Pay or Paystack.
- Changes: the page says fees may change without notice. The Bursary lines on the page are 0803 733 4477 and 0706 694 4981.
How to apply for Accounting at NBU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Accounting (listed as “Accountancy / Accounting” on the JAMB-style list) under Nigerian British University and register Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and a Social Science subject such as Government. If you are planning for 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
- Make NBU your choice on CAPS: NBU says candidates who did not choose it first must change to NBU on JAMB CAPS on or before 30 November 2026. Our JAMB change of institution guide shows how.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited centre so the university can see your grades when it considers you.
- Apply on NBU’s portal: go to application.nbu.edu.ng, choose Accounting (the same course that is on your CAPS) and upload every document requested. NBU says incomplete uploads will not be considered.
- Accept on CAPS: when NBU offers you admission, log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and fees: NBU’s fee table lists a ₦40,000 acceptance fee. Pay only through the university portals (Global Pay or Paystack), then complete course registration within three weeks of resumption.
NBU’s page asks for “all required documents” without naming them. My advice is to have these scanned and ready before you open the form: your O’level result(s), your UTME result slip, proof of age (NBU wants applicants to be at least 16 by 30 September 2026) and a recent passport photograph.
Warning
NBU charges fees close to ₦3 million a year, which makes its applicants a target for people selling “admission slots”. A genuine NBU offer always shows on your JAMB CAPS, and JAMB has said that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Pay only through NBU’s own portals, and ask NBU in writing about your programme’s accreditation before you pay school fees.
Studying Accounting at NBU
Accounting is in NBU’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and leads to a B.Sc., which normally takes four years in Nigeria; NBU’s page does not state the duration.
What you study
- Early years: principles of accounting, business mathematics, economics, introduction to business and computer applications.
- Middle years: financial accounting, cost and management accounting, taxation, company law and auditing.
- Final year: advanced financial reporting, public sector accounting, financial management, an industrial training placement and a research project.
Accreditation: NUC and ICAN
NUC licensed NBU as a private university in April 2022, and NUC’s Monday Bulletin of 8 August 2022 lists “Nigerian British University, Asa, Abia State” among private universities established in 2022. A university licence is not the same as programme accreditation. I searched NUC’s published accreditation reports and found none naming NBU’s Accounting programme, and the NBU part of NUC’s “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” file could not be read. A Vanguard headline from March 2025 says NUC accredited 24 courses for a “British University in Nigeria”, but the article would not open, so I cannot tell you which university or which courses it covers. NBU’s Accounting accreditation status is therefore not confirmed.
Many accounting graduates go on to a professional qualification such as ICAN’s. ICAN grants exemptions from parts of its examinations to graduates of programmes it has accredited. I found no ICAN accreditation for NBU’s Accounting programme, so plan on no exemptions unless NBU shows you an accreditation letter.
Before you pay school fees, email admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask for the programme’s current NUC status (approved to run, interim or full). A written answer protects you later.
Careers
Graduates work in audit and tax firms, bank finance and treasury units, company accounts departments, government ministries and agencies, and as consultants once qualified. The degree plus a professional qualification is the usual path to senior roles.

Mistakes that cost Accounting applicants an NBU place
- Registering Principles of Accounts without checking: confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure; Government is the safe third subject.
- No Economics credit at O’level: JAMB’s line names it.
- Missing the Accountancy / Accounting entry: it is the same course under a longer name.
- Assuming 150 is enough: NBU’s minimum is 160.
- Forgetting the CAPS change: change to NBU on CAPS by 30 November 2026 if it was not your first choice.
- Paying without the tuition figure: the tuition column for this faculty is blank on NBU’s page.
Read our JAMB CAPS guide to understand each admission status, and how to check your JAMB result if you are planning a 2027 attempt.
