NBU Cut-Off Mark for Nursing Science 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

Nigerian British University, Asa sets 180 as the minimum UTME score for Nursing Science, but the programme is not on NMCN’s December 2025 approved list. See the requirements, steps, fees and Abia alternatives.

The NBU cut off mark for Nursing Science that 2027 candidates should plan with is 180 in the UTME. Nigerian British University, Asa (NBU) lists Nursing Science in its “180+” band on its 2026/2027 undergraduate admission page, together with Law and Medical Laboratory Science. That is 30 marks above JAMB’s national minimum of 150 for universities.

2027/2028 update: NBU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

NBU’s nursing department is not on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) list of approved schools dated December 2025. In Abia State that list names four university nursing departments (ABSU, Gregory, Clifford and Rhema), and NBU is not one of them. Without NMCN approval, graduates cannot be indexed or sit the council’s licensing examination, so settle this with NBU before you pay anything.

I could not open a reprint of JAMB’s course list for NBU, so I cannot confirm from JAMB’s side that “Nursing / Nursing Science” sits under Nigerian British University on the JAMB portal. NBU’s page says the course on your CAPS record must match the course you apply for on its portal. When you register, check that the course appears under NBU before you pay for anything.

Nigerian British University (NBU) is a private university at Km 10 Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, Asa, in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State. It is owned by the Adorable Foundation for Educational Development, received NUC approval in April 2022 and was commissioned in February 2023. Its 2026/2027 admission page groups courses into five units: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, the College of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.

NBU did not declare a figure at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting; it is absent from News Central’s list of declared institution cut-offs. The 180 comes from NBU’s own page. Aggregator sites that quote 150 or “160+” for every NBU course are wrong for nursing.

Safe target score for Nursing at NBU (my advice)

These bands are my judgement. NBU has not published applicant numbers, and nursing is one of the most applied-for courses at every Abia university.

Your UTME scoreMy read for NBU Nursing Science
Below 160Not eligible for any NBU course this cycle
160 to 179Below the nursing line; courses in NBU’s 160 band are open
180 to 194Eligible; O’level grades and screening decide
195 to 219Good chance
220 and aboveStrong; you could also look at MBBS (200)

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 200 or more. That clears NBU’s nursing line comfortably and also clears the line at most of the NMCN-approved departments in Abia, which matters given the approval question.

Register Use of English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. There is no alternative set in JAMB’s main line. The JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus cover the two papers that weigh most in nursing school.

For O’level, all five subjects must be credits, and Physics is the one candidates most often lack. NBU accepts two sittings. Some universities are stricter: the brochure shows AAU and DELSU asking for one sitting.

Direct Entry into Nursing at NBU

JAMB’s main Direct Entry line is two A-level passes from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, and several universities also admit registered nurses or ND holders. NBU’s page lists A-level, OND, HND and first degrees as Direct Entry qualifications in general, with transcripts due early (1 September 2026 for the 2026/2027 session). It does not say whether registered nurses can enter its nursing degree. Ask in writing.

How NBU admits Nursing Science candidates

NBU’s 2026/2027 page describes a short process. You apply on the NBU application portal (application.nbu.edu.ng), upload every document it asks for, and make sure your details on JAMB CAPS match what you enter on the portal, including the course. The page says candidates who miss any of these will not be considered.

Applications for 2026/2027 close on Friday, 30 November 2026, and a candidate who did not pick NBU first must change to NBU on CAPS by the same date. JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, so the two line up. NBU also asks that candidates be at least 16 years old by 30 September 2026.

The page does not describe a post-UTME test, an interview, a screening date or a form price, and I found no official NBU notice with an aggregate formula. A 2026 blog said NBU post-UTME forms were on sale but gave no fee or date. So plan for some form of screening and ask the admissions office (admissions@nbu.edu.ng) what it involves before you travel.

Documents to have ready

NBU’s page asks you to upload all required documents but does not list them. Based on what Nigerian universities normally ask for, have these scanned and ready:

  • Your JAMB UTME result slip and admission letter printout from CAPS when it comes
  • Your O’level result or results (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB), not more than two sittings, showing credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  • Birth certificate or age declaration (NBU’s minimum age is 16 by 30 September of the admission year)
  • Local government identification and passport photographs
  • Your change of institution printout, if NBU was not your original choice

Worked example (illustrative only)

NBU publishes no aggregate formula. The last case uses a 50:50 method (UTME divided by 8, plus half the screening percentage) as my illustration only.

  1. Chioma: UTME 203 in English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics, with all five credits in two sittings. She is eligible and above my 200 target.
  2. Kelechi: UTME 191 with a pass (D7) in Physics. NBU cannot admit him into nursing until he gets a Physics credit in a second sitting.
  3. Ngozi: UTME 182. If NBU sets a test and she scores 64%, her illustrative aggregate is 182 divided by 8 (22.75) plus 32, which is 54.75.

Kelechi’s score is fine; his O’level is the problem. Check your result sheet against the five subjects before you buy any form.

How to apply for Nursing Science at NBU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN.
  2. Register for the UTME with NBU as your choice: pick Nigerian British University and “Nursing / Nursing Science”, with Use of English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. If you already registered elsewhere, do a JAMB change of institution to NBU.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre once your result is out. Check that the upload shows English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  4. Apply on the NBU portal: start from the NBU undergraduate admission page, create your application on application.nbu.edu.ng, choose the same course you have on CAPS and upload every document.
  5. Confirm screening: write to admissions@nbu.edu.ng and ask whether there is a test or interview, when and where. In the same email, ask for the NMCN approval letter for the nursing programme.
  6. Accept on CAPS: log in to efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and register: NBU has not published an acceptance fee on the pages I could reach. Pay only through channels the university gives you in writing, after the offer shows on your CAPS page.

Warning

NBU’s nursing programme was not on the NMCN list of approved schools dated December 2025. Nursing graduates need NMCN indexing and the council’s licensing examination to practise. Ask NBU for written proof of NMCN approval before paying acceptance or tuition, and never pay for a nursing place outside JAMB CAPS.

Studying Nursing Science at NBU

Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) trains nurses at degree level: patient care, community and public health, maternal and child health, mental health nursing and nursing management, with clinical postings in hospitals. At NBU the course is in the College of Health Sciences. University nursing degrees in Nigeria normally run for five years. NBU’s pages I reached do not state its duration or the hospitals it uses for clinical practice.

Is NBU Nursing approved by NMCN?

Not on the current list. NMCN’s “New List of Approved Schools” (December 2025) gives these Abia university nursing departments:

Abia universityNMCN status (Dec 2025 list)
Abia State University, Uturu (Faculty of Nursing Science)Full, April 2024
Gregory University, UturuFull, April 2024
Rhema University, AbaFull, June 2023
Clifford University, OwerrintaProvisional, July 2023
Nigerian British University, AsaNot listed

A new department can be added after an NMCN visit, so NBU may have applied or been inspected since December 2025. Until you see a letter from NMCN or a newer NMCN list with NBU on it, treat the programme as not approved.

On the NUC side, NBU’s programmes are young, and the NUC usually sends its accreditation panel when a programme’s first students are close to final year. I could not read NBU’s entries in the NUC “Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025” publication (the online text stops well before universities starting with N), and a search of NUC’s accreditation report pages found no report naming NBU and Nursing Science. A Vanguard headline from March 2025 reads “NUC accredits 24 courses for British University in Nigeria”, but I could not open the article to see which courses it covers or what kind of approval it describes. So I am treating the NUC status of Nursing Science at NBU as not confirmed.

Fees

Legit.ng reported on 14 September 2026, citing NBU’s tuition page, that Nursing tuition for 2026/2027 is N1,270,037. The report did not say whether that is per session or per semester. I could not open NBU’s fee page; check it before you budget.

Careers

Licensed nurses work in hospitals and clinics, primary health care, schools, industry, the armed forces and public health programmes, and many go on to midwifery or specialist post-basic training. Every route starts with NMCN registration, which is why approval matters more for this course than for most.

Mistakes NBU Nursing applicants make

  • Using the 150 or 160 figures from blogs: NBU’s nursing line is 180.
  • Missing a Physics credit, or having credits across three sittings.
  • Choosing a different course on the NBU portal from the one on CAPS.
  • Paying before checking NMCN approval.
  • Missing the change of institution before the 30 November closing date.
