El-Thomp Polytechnic admission requirements start with JAMB’s minimum UTME score for polytechnics, which is 100 for 2026/2027, plus five O’level credits including English Language and Mathematics. El-Thomp, a private polytechnic in Abak, Akwa Ibom State, has published no cut-off of its own. Before you think about scores, though, two problems need checking: I could not find El-Thomp on JAMB’s polytechnic list or on Myschool’s reprint of it, and NBTE’s interim approval for all five of its ND courses expired on 1 October 2026.
2027/2028 update: El-Thomp Poly cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
NBTE’s 25th Edition Directory of Accredited Programmes (2025) has a heading for El-Thomp Polytechnic, Abak, and Wikipedia’s list of Nigerian polytechnics includes it. I found no school website, no admission advert and no screening notice. This page sets out what NBTE shows, how to confirm the school on JAMB before you pay anyone, the subject rules for its five listed courses, and nearby polytechnics that are clearly admitting.

What NBTE’s directory shows for El-Thomp
| Programme | Year granted | Status | Expiration date |
|---|---|---|---|
| ND Accountancy | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
| ND Computer Engineering Technology | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
| ND Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
| ND Computer Science | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
| ND Statistics | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
| Institutional Administration | 2024 | Interim | 1 October 2026 |
Interim approval is what NBTE gives a new programme so that it can start admitting before the full accreditation visit. NBTE’s directory gives each approval an expiration date. For El-Thomp, every line runs out on 1 October 2026, which has passed. I found no newer NBTE list or notice showing renewal or full accreditation.
That does not prove the school has closed or that its courses are illegal today. NBTE may have visited and not yet published the result. What it does mean is that you should not accept the school’s word alone. Ask El-Thomp for the NBTE letter that covers your course for 2027/2028, and check the next edition of the directory when it comes out.
Is El-Thomp Polytechnic on JAMB?
I checked the reprint of Chapter 3 of the JAMB brochure, which lists Nigeria’s polytechnics, and Myschool’s reprints of JAMB’s institution and course lists. El-Thomp was on none of them. The JAMB list reprint is undated and may be older than the school’s 2024 approval, so the school may have been added since. You can only be sure on JAMB’s own system.
This matters more than any cut-off mark. JAMB admits candidates into polytechnics only through CAPS, and NAN reported JAMB’s 2026 warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal. If El-Thomp is not on JAMB, it cannot offer you a full-time ND place that JAMB will recognise, however good your score is.
How to confirm a polytechnic before you pay
- Search during registration: when you register for the UTME at a CBT centre or on JAMB’s portal, look for El-Thomp Polytechnic, Abak in the list of polytechnics. If the name is not there, JAMB cannot send your record to the school.
- Check the course under the school: a school can be on JAMB’s list while a course is not. Make sure your exact course appears under it.
- Check NBTE’s directory: open NBTE’s latest Directory of Accredited Programmes and find the school’s heading. Look at the status and expiration date for your course.
- Ask for letters: ask the school for the NBTE letter for your course and for its JAMB institution code. A school that is admitting legally will have both.
- Keep records: keep copies of every receipt and letter. If anything goes wrong, those papers are what JAMB, NBTE or a lawyer will ask for.
El-Thomp Poly cut-off mark
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB minimum for polytechnics | Official (reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025) |
| Any year | None | El-Thomp figure for any course | No published figure found |
If El-Thomp turns out to be on CAPS, 100 is the legal minimum for any of its courses. Small private polytechnics rarely set a higher figure, but a higher score still helps if a class fills up. These targets are my own advice, not school figures:
| Course | Legal minimum | My safe target for 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Accountancy | 100 | 120 or more |
| Computer Engineering Technology | 100 | 130 or more |
| Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology | 100 | 125 or more |
| Computer Science | 100 | 130 or more |
| Statistics | 100 | 115 or more |
UTME subjects and O’level for El-Thomp’s five courses
Use of English is compulsory for every UTME candidate, so the brochure lists only your other three subjects. These are the JAMB polytechnic brochure base rules; I could not check for an El-Thomp remark because the school does not appear on the brochure reprint.
| Course | UTME subjects besides Use of English | O’level credits (five in all) |
|---|---|---|
| Accountancy | Mathematics and any two of Geography, Commerce, Government, Principles of Accounts and Economics | English Language and Mathematics plus three such as Economics, Principles of Accounts and Commerce |
| Computer Engineering Technology | Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry | Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English Language plus one technical or science subject |
| Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology | Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry | Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus two from the technical list (get English as one) |
| Computer Science | Mathematics and any two of Geography, Physics, Economics and Chemistry | Mathematics, English Language and Physics plus two others such as Chemistry and Economics |
| Statistics | Mathematics and two of Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography or Biology/Agricultural Science (JAMB page did not load; pattern from Federal Polytechnics Offa and Nekede) | English Language and Mathematics plus three such as Physics, Economics and Geography |
Two traps catch candidates every year. For Computer Science, Physics is optional in the UTME but a Physics credit is compulsory at O’level. For Computer Engineering and Electrical/Electronic, Chemistry is compulsory in the UTME, so a candidate who wrote Biology in its place does not qualify. For Statistics the JAMB brochure page did not load; English, Mathematics, Economics and Physics fits every published polytechnic pattern I found.
Under the standard NBTE rule, each ND takes two years full-time with a SIWES placement, and an HND needs an ND of at least Lower Credit plus a year of industrial attachment. NBTE lists no HND programme for El-Thomp.
If El-Thomp is on CAPS: how to apply
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick your course and choose El-Thomp Polytechnic, Abak as your polytechnic. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before screening.
- Upload your O’level result to CAPS: go to an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out. CAPS cannot offer you admission without it.
- Contact the school: go to the campus in Abak, confirm your course is admitting for 2027/2028, ask for its NBTE letter, buy the form there and keep every receipt.
- Attend screening: take your UTME result slip, O’level result, birth certificate or age declaration, local government identification and passport photographs.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and register: get the amounts in writing from the bursary, pay only through the channel the school names, and complete medical and departmental registration.
Warning
Do not pay an agent or a WhatsApp group for an El-Thomp Polytechnic form. The school has no website I could find, and until you see it on JAMB’s portal with your course under it, any money you pay could be lost. JAMB treats admission outside CAPS as illegal.
Akwa Ibom polytechnics running the same courses
If El-Thomp is missing from JAMB or cannot show current NBTE approval, these polytechnics offer Accountancy, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic and Statistics or most of them, and their status is easier to confirm.
| Polytechnic | Type and place | What I found | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Polytechnic, Ukana | Federal; Ukana, Essien Udim LGA | Asked for at least 100 in the 2026 UTME and sold its screening form at N2,000 on its e-portal; 2026/2027 admission lists are already out | Computer Science, Accountancy |
| Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua | State; Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene | Asked for 100 and above in the 2026 UTME; 2026 screening ran from 9 to 11 September 2026 | Computer Science, Accountancy |
| Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic | Private; Atan Offot, Uyo | Six courses on JAMB’s list; most NDs accredited by NBTE to 2028 or 2030 | All courses |
| Ultra Excellence Polytechnic | Private; Uyo | Four NDs accredited by NBTE to 2030 and one on interim approval | All courses |
Abak candidates are within reach of Ikot Ekpene and Uyo, so a move to one of these schools need not mean a big jump in transport costs. Brainfill Polytechnic in Ikot Ekpene is another option: see our Brainfill Polytechnic admission requirements.

Sources and updates
The 2026/2027 polytechnic minimum of 100, the 31 December 2026 deadline and JAMB’s warning against admissions outside CAPS come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on 11 May 2026; the 2025/2026 figure is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025). The school’s heading, its ND programmes and their interim status and expiry dates are from NBTE’s 25th Edition 2025 Directory of Accredited Programmes. Wikipedia’s list of polytechnics in Nigeria includes El-Thomp at Abak. The JAMB check used a reprint of Chapter 3 of the JAMB brochure and Myschool’s institution lists. Subject rules are the JAMB polytechnic brochure base lines as reprinted by Myschool, with Federal Polytechnic Offa and Nekede patterns for Statistics. Details on the alternative polytechnics come from their 2026 admission notices as reprinted by Myschool. Safe targets are my own advice. Checked on 3 November 2026. This page will be updated if El-Thomp appears on JAMB or NBTE publishes a new status.
