The ABSU cut off mark for Civil Engineering is 150 in the UTME. That is the minimum Abia State University (ABSU) set for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Civil Engineering, so 150 makes you eligible for screening and nothing more. Engineering places are limited, and the candidates who get in usually score well above the minimum.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
The good news for Civil Engineering applicants is the accreditation record. NUC’s published results list ABSU Civil Engineering with full accreditation and a maturity date of 2030, the longest of ABSU’s engineering courses. Below are the official figures, my safe target score, the exact JAMB subjects, the Direct Entry rules, the screening steps and what the degree leads to.

ABSU Civil Engineering cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score ABSU accepted for online screening in any regular degree course (ABSU as first or second choice) | ABSU notice, reprinted by Osilight and Myschool, 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Civil Engineering figure | None published | Blog “departmental cut-off” tables cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice gave one figure for all courses. A website that prints an official ABSU cut-off for Civil Engineering alone is quoting a number ABSU never released. The real line each year is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course, and ABSU does not publish it.
Safe target score for Civil Engineering at ABSU (my advice)
Engineering at a state university in the South East draws far more applicants than it can admit, and you are ranked against everyone who chose the same course. This table is my advice from how engineering courses behave at universities in the region. ABSU has not published anything like it.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Civil Engineering |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for screening |
| 150 to 179 | Eligible, but you will need excellent O’level grades and some luck; have a backup course ready |
| 180 to 199 | A fair chance with strong credits from one sitting |
| 200 to 219 | Good |
| 220 and above | Strong |
I would aim for 200 or more. If you land between 150 and 180, look at ABSU’s Building Technology or Surveying and Geo-Informatics early. Both sit in the same college, and a change of course on JAMB is easier before ABSU starts admitting than after.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Civil Engineering at ABSU
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Civil Engineering (listed under Engineering, Environment and Technology on ABSU’s course list) |
| UTME | Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics |
| O’level | Five SSCE credits: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English Language and one science subject |
| Direct Entry (A-level) | A-level passes in Physics and Mathematics |
| Direct Entry (ND/HND) | ND or HND at upper credit, admitted at the appropriate level (general line) |
| ABSU-specific remarks | None; all 70 remarks on this brochure entry name other universities |
The UTME has no choice in it. Your four papers are Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and no remark changes that for ABSU. Candidates who register Biology or Geography in place of Chemistry cannot be offered Civil Engineering, however high they score.
At O’level you need credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus one more science subject. Biology is the usual fifth subject. Further Mathematics, Agricultural Science or Technical Drawing may also be accepted as the fifth science, but confirm with ABSU before you rely on them. The reprinted notice does not say how many sittings ABSU allows, so ask before you combine two results.
Direct Entry
The brochure’s general Direct Entry line for Civil Engineering accepts A-level passes in Physics and Mathematics, or an ND or HND at upper credit admitted at the appropriate level. ABSU has no separate remark, so this general line is what applies. The 2026/2027 notice also says Direct Entry candidates need the basic five O’level credits. A Civil Engineering Technology ND holder with upper credit is the typical Direct Entry applicant; ask the admissions office whether you would enter 200 level or 300 level before buying a form.
Where admission blogs often go wrong
Several admission blogs give a longer O’level list or say any science combination works for the UTME. The JAMB brochure entry is short and strict: the four UTME papers above, and five O’level credits with Physics and Chemistry both compulsory. Check your result slip against that list before you pay for screening.
How ABSU screens applicants
The 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
| Closing date | Not stated in the reprints |
The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. Since the notice describes no written test, ABSU ranks you on two things it already has: your UTME score and your O’level grades. For Civil Engineering, that means your Mathematics and Physics grades carry a lot of weight.
Worked example for Civil Engineering candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you up or down, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.
- Ugochukwu scored 198 with B3 in English, A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry and B3 in Biology. UTME points: 198 ÷ 8 = 24.75. O’level points: 8 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 67.75.
- Kelechi scored 221 with C6 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C6 in Physics, C5 in Chemistry and C6 in Biology. UTME points: 221 ÷ 8 = 27.625. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 27. Illustrative total: 54.625.
- The result: Ugochukwu leads by 13.125 points. Kelechi scored 23 marks more in the UTME and still trails, because his weak credits left him 16 O’level points behind.
How to apply for Civil Engineering at ABSU, step by step
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: choose Civil Engineering at Abia State University, with Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. ABSU accepted first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is the safer position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, once your result is out. Check that the upload shows credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one more science subject.
- Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
- Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and the printout of your completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
- Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. An ABSU offer shows on CAPS first.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.
Warning
Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Civil Engineering place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.
JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 date by which public universities such as ABSU should finish admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.
Civil Engineering at ABSU: the programme
ABSU groups its engineering and built environment departments under the College of Engineering and Environmental Studies. The main campus is at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA; Wikipedia places only the College of Law and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the Umuahia campus. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.
What you study
ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Engineering degrees in Nigeria follow the NUC benchmark, and the first two years are shared across most engineering departments. You can expect:
- Foundations: engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, technical drawing and workshop practice in the early years.
- Structures: strength of materials, structural analysis and the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
- Ground and water: soil mechanics, foundation engineering, hydraulics, hydrology and water supply.
- Roads and sites: highway and transportation engineering, surveying and construction management.
- Environment: waste water treatment and environmental engineering.
- Practical work: workshop practice, laboratory sessions, SIWES industrial training (usually several months in a company) and a final-year design or research project.
Accreditation, degree and duration
NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Civil Engineering with full accreditation and a maturity date of 2030. Unlike Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at ABSU, its record shows no interim result. Accreditation by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) matters too, because COREN registration later depends on it. I found no published COREN report on ABSU’s engineering programmes, so COREN status is not confirmed here; ask the department before you accept. The degree is usually a B.Eng, and five years is the normal length for UTME entrants in Nigerian engineering; ABSU’s own page confirming both was not available.

Mistakes that cost Civil Engineering applicants an ABSU place
- Stopping at 150: it makes you eligible and nothing more in a crowded engineering course.
- Wrong fourth UTME subject: Chemistry is compulsory; Biology or Geography in its place rules you out.
- No Chemistry credit at O’level: Physics and Chemistry are both required.
- Assuming an ND gets you straight to 300 level: the brochure says appropriate level, and ABSU decides it.
- Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
- Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept an offer.
ABSU Civil Engineering: frequently asked questions
What is the cut-off mark for Civil Engineering in ABSU? ABSU’s minimum for every course in 2026/2027 was 150 in the UTME, and it published no separate Civil Engineering figure. I would aim for 200 or more to be safe.

Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Civil Engineering, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. I found no published COREN report on ABSU Civil Engineering. ABSU’s fees, the degree title and the duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
