The IMT Chemical Engineering Technology cut off mark is 100 in the UTME, JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has not published a separate departmental cut-off for Chemical Engineering, so 100 is the official floor and the figure 2027/2028 candidates should plan around.
2027/2028 update: IMT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Chemical Engineering usually draws fewer applicants than Civil or Electrical/Electronics, which makes it a sensible choice for strong science candidates with a middling score. Below are the official figures, where the old 120 comes from, my safe target score, the brochure subjects (including IMT’s Biology option), how screening has run, two worked examples and each CAPS step.
IMT Chemical Engineering Technology cut off mark at a glance

IMT cut-off mark history for Chemical Engineering
IMT does not publish course-by-course cut-off marks for its ND programmes. The history below is the national floor that applies to every polytechnic, plus one older IMT figure that still circulates on blogs.
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (Nairametrics and Channels TV, 8 July 2025) |
| 2023 UTME | 120 | IMT’s own ND screening threshold in a 2023 notice | Old; reprinted on blogs under 2026 headings |
The 120 you will see on many blogs comes from IMT’s 2023 ND screening notice, signed by the Registrar at the time. Some sites now print it under 2026/2027 headings, but no 2026 IMT notice repeats it. The figure that has held for two sessions running is JAMB’s 100. For Chemical Engineering, the practical bar is higher than 100 but not as high as for the most popular engineering courses.
Safe target score for Chemical Engineering at IMT (my advice)
The bands below are my judgement as an admissions adviser. IMT has not published anything like them, so use them for planning only.
| Your UTME score | My read for Chemical Engineering at IMT |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any polytechnic, IMT included |
| 100 to 119 | Eligible to apply; a place depends on your Chemistry and Mathematics grades |
| 120 to 139 | Possible, especially with B grades in the sciences |
| 140 to 159 | Competitive |
| 160 and above | Strong for Chemical Engineering at IMT |
I place Chemical Engineering in the middle of IMT’s engineering courses for demand: below Civil and Electrical/Electronics, around the level of Mechanical. IMT has not published applicant numbers, so this is my reading of how engineering places fill at South East polytechnics. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 140, ideally 160.
Good O’level Chemistry matters more here than in the other engineering departments, because the first year builds directly on it.
Catchment and state of origin
IMT is owned by Enugu State, so Enugu indigenes are its home catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. IMT has not published a merit, catchment or quota split for its ND courses, so do not plan around a formula it has never announced. Your UTME score, your science grades at O’level and how early your documents are complete count for more.
IMT Chemical Engineering Technology subject combination and O’level requirements
| Requirement | Chemical Engineering Technology (ND) at IMT |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry or Technical Drawing |
| IMT remark in the brochure | IMT accepts Biology (UTME remark for IMT-ENU) |
| O’level | Five credits in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus any two of Biology or Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics or Basic Electricity, Auto Mechanics, Metal Work, Woodwork, Further Mathematics, English Language, Geography, Economics or Commerce. At least a credit in English Language is required. |
| Combination I would register | English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (SSCE or GCE) |
| Direct Entry | Not used for ND. HND entry is with a relevant ND through IMT’s HND form |
| Special requirements | None published for IMT |
JAMB’s polytechnic brochure writes the UTME subjects for Chemical Engineering Technology as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry or Technical Drawing, with Use of English compulsory. On paper you could take Technical Drawing instead of Chemistry, but I would keep Chemistry, because the first year of a chemical engineering course builds on it, and you still need a Chemistry credit at O’level whatever you sit in the UTME.
At O’level the brochure asks for five credits including Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus two more from the list, and it states separately that a credit in English Language is required. In practice that means English counts as one of your two extra credits. Biology, Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing make a good fifth.
What IMT’s Biology option means for Chemical Engineering
The only IMT line on this brochure page is a UTME remark: IMT accepts Biology. The remark does not name the subject Biology replaces. Read alongside the main list, the subject most likely to give way is Physics or Technical Drawing, since Chemistry is the heart of the course.
If you have already registered with English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, this remark means your combination can still work at IMT. If you have not registered, take Physics. Check the current Chemical Engineering Technology entry for IMT Enugu on your JAMB e-Facility profile before you register.
Direct Entry and HND
There is no Direct Entry into the first year of an ND, so every ND Chemical Engineering place goes through the UTME and JAMB CAPS. HND Chemical Engineering is a separate stage: reprints of IMT’s HND notice ask for a relevant ND with a CGPA of at least 2.50, or a lower CGPA backed by two years of verifiable industrial experience, and the application goes through IMT’s own HND form rather than the UTME. Those HND details come from reprints, so confirm them on the portal. Our IMT HND admission guide covers that route.
How IMT screening works for ND Chemical Engineering
IMT’s website links a notice titled “Call for 2026/2027 admission into ND and HND programs (regular and part-time)”, and applications run through the SLMS application page on portal.imt.edu.ng. The admission result checker is on the same portal. The 2026/2027 screening fee, dates and test format were not in any official source I could open, so the table separates what is confirmed from what is only reported.
| Detail | What we know | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies | Candidates who chose IMT in the UTME and scored at least the JAMB minimum | Standard JAMB rule |
| Where | portal.imt.edu.ng (SLMS Application) | Confirmed link on imt.edu.ng |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 in earlier years | Reported by blogs; not dated 2026, confirm on the portal |
| Payment | Interswitch, Enugu State IGR or Quickteller in earlier years | Reported; confirm on the portal |
| Format | Computer-based screening plus O’level upload in earlier years | Reported; IMT has not published the 2026/2027 format |
| Part-time option | Chemical Engineering appears on IMT’s official part-time course page | Recorded in our fact base; confirm the current part-time form |
| Admission deadline for polytechnics | 31 December 2026 | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
| Time to accept an offer on CAPS | Four weeks | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
Worked example for a Chemical Engineering applicant
IMT has not published an aggregate formula for ND admission. Some blogs print one, but none cites an IMT document, so the example below only measures the gap between a UTME score, the national floor and my safe target, then checks the O’level against the brochure.
Take Adaeze, who scored 155 and has, from one WAEC sitting, C4 in English, B3 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, B2 in Chemistry and C4 in Biology.
- Eligibility: 155 minus 100 = 55. She is well clear of JAMB’s polytechnic minimum.
- Against my safe target: 155 minus 140 = 15. She is in the competitive band, close to strong.
- O’level check: five credits at one sitting, with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology.
- What I would advise: keep Chemical Engineering, get the WAEC result on CAPS early and apply as soon as the IMT form opens.
Kelechi scored 133. His WAEC has credits in English, Mathematics and Chemistry, and his NECO adds Physics and Technical Drawing. Across two sittings he has the five credits the brochure asks for. On score, 133 minus 100 = 33, so he can apply, but he is 7 marks short of my target. With a B grade in Chemistry I would still back him to try, and I would also keep Science Laboratory Technology or Food Technology at IMT in mind as fallback options, because both build on the same Chemistry base.
How to apply for Chemical Engineering Technology at IMT, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register for the UTME: choose Chemical Engineering Technology with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and pick IMT Enugu as your polytechnic choice. If you picked another school, do a JAMB change of institution before IMT screening closes.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to an accredited CBT centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded. If your result was awaiting at registration, upload it as soon as it is out.
- Watch IMT’s notice: the admission call appears on imt.edu.ng and the form opens on portal.imt.edu.ng. Use only the official portal.
- Fill the screening form and pay: enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice, pay through the channel the portal names, then finish the form and print your slip.
- Check your result and CAPS: use the result checker on portal.imt.edu.ng, then log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status and open CAPS.
- Accept within four weeks: JAMB set four weeks for 2026 offers. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status you might see.
- Pay acceptance and clear: blogs put IMT’s acceptance fee at ₦25,000, but IMT has not published it in any source I reached. Pay only against an invoice from the IMT portal.
Warning
Every genuine IMT offer appears on JAMB CAPS. Anyone selling an “IMT Chemical Engineering slot” or a special list is not part of the process. Pay fees only through invoices generated on portal.imt.edu.ng.
Your chances of getting Chemical Engineering at IMT
JAMB’s 100 only opens the door to screening. In Chemical Engineering you compete with other Chemical Engineering applicants, and the pool is usually smaller than in Civil or Electrical/Electronics.
Your UTME score is fixed once results are out, so the part you still control is the O’level on CAPS. Make sure Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and English show as credits, and do not add a third sitting.
Chemical Engineering is also on IMT’s part-time course list, which can suit candidates already working in a plant or laboratory. Confirm the current part-time terms on the portal before you apply.
Studying Chemical Engineering Technology at IMT Enugu
IMT’s Faculty of Engineering page lists six departments: Agric Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Electrical/Electronics Engineering. The page dates the school to 1973, names Engr. Dr. Timothy Adibe as Dean, and says each department runs both an ND and an HND, with each taking four semesters. On that page the department appears as Chemical Engineering.
What you study
IMT has not put its course outline for this programme online, so the list below describes what ND Chemical Engineering generally covers in Nigerian polytechnics. Ask the department for its own outline at registration.
- Chemistry for engineers: inorganic, organic and physical chemistry with laboratory work.
- Process principles: material and energy balances, unit operations and fluid flow.
- Plant and equipment: heat transfer, separation processes and process instrumentation.
- Industrial chemistry: chemical process industries such as soap, paint, fertiliser and petroleum products.
- Practical work: SIWES placement in a manufacturing plant, refinery or quality control laboratory.
Accreditation
At IMT’s Global Homecoming on 13 June 2026, the Rector, Prof. Sunday Gozie Ogbodo, said all courses offered by IMT are now fully accredited, after more than 70% of programmes had expired accreditation when he took office in 2024. An NBTE accreditation team visited in November 2025. NBTE has not published a programme-by-programme result for Chemical Engineering Technology that I could find, so its individual status is not confirmed. Ask the department to show it during clearance if this matters to you.
Careers
- Process or production technician in breweries, soap, paint and food factories
- Quality control laboratory technician
- Water treatment plant operator
- Operations roles in petroleum product depots and gas plants
- Small-scale manufacturing of soaps, detergents or cosmetics after experience
Engineering technologists and technicians in Nigeria register with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Most people reach the technologist grade after the HND, so plan on the full ND, industrial attachment and HND route if a professional engineering career is your aim.

Mistakes that cost Chemical Engineering applicants an IMT place
- Treating 100 as admission: it only makes you eligible to apply.
- Planning with the old 120: that comes from a 2023 notice.
- Swapping Chemistry for Technical Drawing in the UTME: the brochure allows it, but it weakens your preparation.
- No English credit: the brochure states it separately for this course.
- Missing O’level on CAPS: screening checks what CAPS shows.
- Buying a “slot”: offers come only through CAPS and the IMT portal.
