Oji River College of Health Tech Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) Admission Requirements 2027/2028: Entrance Exam and Form

Oji River College of Health Technology JCHEW admission for 2027/2028: the O’level rule, the college entrance exam, the last form price on record and how JCHEW differs from CHEW.

Oji River College of Health Technology JCHEW admission requirements start with one fact: there is no JAMB cut-off mark for Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) at Enugu State College of Health Technology, Oji River. You get in through the college’s own form and entrance exam. Its last traced advert, for 2024/2025, asked for an O’level certificate, sold the form for ₦10,000 at the admission office and held the entrance exam on Saturday 10 August 2024. No advert for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 has been found.

2027/2028 update: The admission requirements and entrance exam process at Oji River College of Health Technology usually stay the same from one year to the next, so what is on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. The latest advert we could trace is the 2024/2025 one, reprinted by an admissions blog; no 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 notice has turned up. If the 2027/2028 advert changes anything, we will update this page.

This guide sets out what is on record and when, how JCHEW compares with CHEW so you pick the right one, the O’level subjects I would have (my advice, since the college has published no list), the entrance exam, the steps to apply and the accreditation check to make before paying.

Is there a JAMB cut-off mark for JCHEW at Oji River?

No cut-off mark has been published, and I could not find any source saying JCHEW applicants at this college must sit the UTME. The 2024/2025 advert, as reprinted by Myschool, asked only for an O’level certificate and sent candidates to the college’s own entrance exam. What a JCHEW applicant has to pass here is the college’s entrance exam.

If the college ever moves a programme onto JAMB’s list as a National Diploma, the national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics would apply. JAMB fixed that at 100 for 2025/2026 and kept it at 100 for 2026/2027 at its policy meeting of 11 May 2026. Until the college says so, treat that figure as background only.

Those 2024 dates and the ₦10,000 price belong to the 2024/2025 cycle. They are useful as a guide to timing, since the form came out in June and the exam held in August that year, but they are not 2026 or 2027 figures.

O’level subjects for JCHEW at Oji River

The college has not published a subject list for JCHEW. The only requirement in the advert reprint is an O’level certificate, with a reminder that candidates must meet the programme’s entry requirements before applying. That leaves the details to the admission office, so here is what I would have before buying the form. This is my advice, based on what health training programmes in Nigeria usually ask for, and it is not the college’s published list.

SubjectMy advice for JCHEW
English LanguageCredit
MathematicsCredit
BiologyCredit
Chemistry or PhysicsCredit in at least one
Other subjectsPasses or credits in your remaining subjects; ask how many credits the college wants for JCHEW

JCHEW is the junior cadre, and some training schools accept fewer credits for it than for CHEW. The Oji River college has not said what it accepts, so do not assume a lower requirement. Ask the admission office, and if you already have five credits including English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry, consider whether CHEW suits you better.

One admissions blog (Studentship, June 2025) lists credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry plus a National Diploma “in a relevant field” for this college. An ND requirement makes no sense for school leavers applying to a certificate programme, so I read that line as copied from an HND template. Ask the admission office before you rely on it.

How the Oji River entrance exam works for JCHEW

The college sets its own entrance exam. It has not published the subjects tested, the pass mark, the number of questions or how it ranks candidates, and no aggregate formula has been released. From the 2024/2025 cycle, these points are on record:

  • Forms were sold at the college’s admission office in Oji River, not through JAMB.
  • The form cost ₦10,000 in 2024. Myschool also advertised past questions for ₦4,500, but that was Myschool’s own product, not a college fee.
  • The exam was first fixed for Saturday 27 July 2024, then moved to Saturday 10 August 2024. Form sales closed on the exam day.
  • Studentship’s June 2025 page describes an online form and payment by card or at First Bank for the same session. The Myschool reprint says the admission office, and the college’s own notice was not available to me, so confirm the method in Oji River.

Worked example (illustrative)

Take Adaeze, who has C6 in English, C5 in Mathematics, C4 in Biology, D7 in Chemistry and C6 in Agricultural Science from NECO. She is unsure whether to apply for CHEW or JCHEW. With Chemistry at a pass, I would tell her to ask the admission office whether that rules her out of CHEW. If it does, JCHEW is the realistic choice this year, and she can still move up later. She plans her revision around the 2024 timetable, when the form came out in late June and the exam held in August.

The steps in that example are my planning advice. The college has not published a scoring method, and a pass in its exam is what decides the offer.

How to apply for JCHEW at Oji River College of Health Technology

  1. Confirm that sales are open: visit or call the admission office at the college in Oji River. With no official website found, the office is the safest source of the current form price, closing date and exam date.
  2. Check the O’level rule for JCHEW: ask which five subjects need credits, whether two sittings are accepted, and whether awaiting results are allowed.
  3. Buy the form from the college: in 2024 it was ₦10,000 at the admission office. Pay only through the channel the college gives you and keep the receipt.
  4. Fill and submit the form: choose Junior Community Health (JCHEW) as your programme, attach passport photographs and copies of your O’level result and birth certificate or age declaration, and submit before the closing date.
  5. Write the entrance exam: go with your receipt or exam slip. Revise English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at SSCE level, since those are the subjects most health exams draw from.
  6. Check the list and accept: when your name appears, pay the acceptance fee and the other fees the college lists. In 2025 the Oji River council listed acceptance, tuition, accreditation, development, examination, sanitation, sports and hostel charges among what it paid for its scholars, which gives you an idea of the separate items to expect.
  7. Only if the college says JAMB is needed: create a JAMB profile by sending NIN and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019, register the UTME with the college as your choice, upload your O’level to JAMB CAPS, then accept the offer on CAPS before paying the college. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each screen.

Warning

No official website for this college turned up in our searches, and sites that look official can belong to agents. Buy the form only at the college or through a payment channel the admission office gives you in writing, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed place.

Your chances of admission into JCHEW

The college does not publish an intake quota, and no applicant numbers have been released, so nobody can give you real odds. Two facts help. In November 2025 every one of the 47 Oji River indigenes sponsored by the local council was offered admission, across eight programmes. The council was paying their fees, so this tells you the college admitted candidates who met its requirements; it does not tell you how many outsiders were turned down.

JCHEW draws candidates who may not have every science credit, so meeting the O’level rule and preparing for the exam in English and basic science should put you in contention. That is my reading, not a published figure.

The college’s condition is the second thing to weigh. In August 2024 the Enugu State Government said the college had fallen from its former standing, announced a revamp and asked students to return after a security breach near the school. The government said the suspects had been arrested and the victims, one of them a student, freed, and that more security personnel had been posted to Oji River. Visit the campus, ask current students about lectures and clinical postings, and ask the college to show you its accreditation letter for JCHEW.

What you study in JCHEW

JCHEWs are the entry cadre of community health practitioners. A 2018 study in BMC Health Services Research found that JCHEWs are expected to spend about half their time in the community, while CHEWs spend about half of theirs on consultations. The college has not published its JCHEW course list, so the topics below describe the cadre in general.

  • Basic health sciences and first aid
  • Health education, hygiene and nutrition in homes and schools
  • Immunisation support and growth monitoring of children
  • Home visits, community mobilisation and simple health records
  • Recognising illness and referring patients to a CHEW, nurse or doctor
  • Supervised field postings

Duration and award

The college has not published how long its JCHEW programme runs. The 2018 study puts JCHEW training at two years, against three for CHEW. Confirm the length and the certificate name with the admission office.

Accreditation and licensing

CHPRBN registers JCHEWs and accredits training institutions. I could not confirm that CHPRBN has accredited the JCHEW programme at Oji River, and the college has published nothing on it. Ask to see the accreditation letter before you pay school fees, because registration with the board is what allows you to work as a JCHEW.

Do not confuse this college with the Oji River campus of the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences. The state government reported in April 2025 that the nursing college had opened campuses in Nsukka and Oji River after accreditation. That is a separate institution with its own admissions, and nursing is not one of the College of Health Technology’s programmes.

Careers

  • Health posts and primary health centres in rural and urban wards
  • Community outreach for immunisation and nutrition programmes
  • NGO and donor-funded community health projects
  • Further training to CHEW and, later, Community Health Officer

For the entrance exam, revise SSCE English, Mathematics and Biology first. Our JAMB Biology syllabus is a handy checklist of topics.

Mistakes JCHEW applicants make

  • Waiting for a JAMB cut-off: none has been published. The college’s own form and exam decide admission.
  • Planning with 2024 dates: the 27 July and 10 August 2024 exam dates and the ₦10,000 price were for 2024/2025.
  • Buying forms from strangers: buy at the college or through a channel it names.
  • Skipping the accreditation question: ask whether CHPRBN has accredited the JCHEW programme before paying fees.
  • Missing a science credit: Biology is the credit I would treat as essential for JCHEW.

If you also plan to write the UTME for a university or polytechnic place, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and, if you later want to switch schools, JAMB change of institution.
