The Renaissance University Economics cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Renaissance University (RNU), Ugbawka, publishes that one minimum for every programme in 2026/2027, the same as JAMB’s national minimum for universities. It has not published a separate cut-off for Economics.
2027/2028 update: RNU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Economics is on JAMB’s course list for Renaissance University under the name Economics, and on RNU’s own 2026/2027 programme list. JAMB also lists education courses such as Education and Economics at some universities; for RNU, pick plain Economics.
Economics is one of the RNU programmes reported to have received full NUC re-accreditation in 2024, which is useful to know when comparing private universities. The subject rules are simple, with one RNU remark that matters for Direct Entry. Below are the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), subjects, fees and the CAPS steps.
Renaissance University Economics cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| RNU minimum JAMB score for Economics | 150 | Official (RNU, 2026/2027) |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| Departmental cut-off for Economics | Not published | RNU says some courses may need more; no figure given |
| Course name to pick on JAMB | Economics | JAMB course list for RNU |
| Post-UTME test | None published | Not mentioned on RNU’s official pages |
| Application fee | None | RNU FAQ |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | RNU FAQ and tuition page |
| Session fee | ₦1,800,000 (tuition, hostel, three meals) | RNU tuition page and 2026/2027 announcement |
| O’level | English, Mathematics, Economics | RNU’s own table |
| UTME subjects | English, Economics, Mathematics + one Arts or Social Science subject | JAMB brochure general requirement |
RNU Economics cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | RNU minimum JAMB score for every programme, including Economics | Official (RNU undergraduate page, FAQ and admission announcement) |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2026/2027 | Not published | Separate departmental cut-off for Economics | RNU tells candidates to ask Admissions for their course cut-off |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | RNU figure for that session | Blogs print numbers, but I found no RNU notice behind them |
RNU’s 2026/2027 announcement also says candidates who scored 150 or more in the 2023 and 2024 JAMB examinations can apply. That line looks carried over from an earlier session, so if you plan to use an older UTME result, ask Admissions before you pay anything. RNU did not appear on the list of institution cut-offs reported from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, so the 150 on RNU’s own pages is the figure to work with.
Safe target score for Economics at RNU (my advice)
This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. RNU has not published these numbers.
| Your UTME score | My read for Economics at RNU |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for RNU this session |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible. Likely if your O’level matches |
| 170 to 194 | Comfortable |
| 195 and above | Strong, and it keeps public universities open too |
Economics has no professional-council quota and the published minimum usually settles eligibility at a private university. I would aim for 175 or more: RNU’s FAQ says some programmes may need more than 150, and Economics is competitive at the public universities you may want as a backup.
UTME subject combination and O’level for RNU Economics
| Requirement | Economics at RNU |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Economics |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and one of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French or CRS/IRS (or any other Arts or Social Science subject) |
| O’level (RNU table) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics |
| O’level (JAMB brochure) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two Arts or Social Science subjects |
| RNU remark in the brochure | Direct Entry only (see below) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC or NECO (named by RNU) |
| Sittings | Not more than two (RNU) |
| Awaiting results | No RNU rule published; ask Admissions |
Economics and Mathematics are fixed in the UTME. For the fourth subject, Government is the usual choice, but History, Geography, Literature in English, French and CRS or IRS also appear on the brochure line. A science student with Physics as the fourth subject should check the e-brochure first, because Physics is not on that list.
At O’level, the credit in Mathematics is the one candidates most often lack. Economics uses graphs, algebra and statistics from the first semester, so a weak Mathematics credit will show up quickly in the course as well as at clearance.
Direct Entry into Economics at RNU
RNU’s Direct Entry page sets out the routes below. It does not list separate Direct Entry rules for each course, so read it together with JAMB’s line for Economics.
| Qualification | RNU’s stated minimum |
|---|---|
| A’level (Cambridge, JUPEB or IJMB) | At least two passes in relevant subjects |
| ND or HND | At least Lower Credit from a recognised institution |
| NCE | At least merit in a related field |
| Also required | O’level result, passport photographs and a JAMB Direct Entry registration for the current year |
JAMB’s general Direct Entry rule for Economics asks for two A’level passes, Economics and one of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government. The brochure adds an RNU remark: it accepts NCE, ND/HND or a first degree plus five O’level credits in subjects other than those passed at advanced level. That is a wider door than most universities offer.
Does RNU write Post-UTME for Economics?
RNU’s official pages describe a free online application followed by a document check at clearance. None of them mention a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or an aggregate formula. You still need to be on JAMB CAPS with an eligible score, the right subjects and your O’level uploaded, because every admission in Nigeria passes through CAPS.
RNU’s Direct Entry page adds that applicants may be asked to attend an interview or bring extra documents. For Economics, the clearance check that matters most is your Mathematics and Economics credits.
Worked example (illustrative)
RNU has not published an aggregate formula, so this example checks eligibility and the money needed before resumption using RNU’s figures. Take Uchenna, who scored 187 with English, Economics, Mathematics and Government, and has credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Government and Geography.
- Score check: 187 minus 150 = 37. He clears RNU’s minimum comfortably.
- UTME check: Economics, Mathematics and Government match the first brochure line.
- O’level check: all three subjects RNU names are credits, at one sitting.
- Money before resumption: On three instalments, 50% of ₦1,800,000 = ₦900,000, plus ₦50,000 acceptance = ₦950,000. On four instalments, 40% = ₦720,000, plus ₦50,000 = ₦770,000.
With 187, Uchenna can also put a public university forward. If he does, he should remember that JAMB only lets one institution admit him, and he should not accept anything on CAPS until he has decided.
RNU Economics acceptance fee and school fees
| Item | Economics at RNU | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | None | RNU FAQ |
| Acceptance fee | ₦50,000 | RNU FAQ and tuition page |
| Session fee | ₦1,800,000 | RNU tuition page; the 2026/2027 announcement puts “other programmes” at ₦1,800,000 |
| What the session fee covers | Tuition, hostel accommodation and three meals a day | RNU announcement and tuition page |
| Instalments | Three (50%, 20%, 30%) or four (40%, 20%, 20%, 20%); first instalment before resumption | RNU FAQ |
| Hostel | Compulsory; no more than three students to a room; no cooking | RNU FAQ |
The session fee covers tuition, hostel and feeding. Books, handouts, transport and personal costs are on top. RNU’s FAQ puts its full fee range at roughly ₦1.5 million to ₦1.8 million, and Economics is at the top of that range.
Your chances of getting Economics at RNU
RNU does not publish applicant or intake numbers per course. Going by how private universities in the South East usually fill their places, a candidate who meets 150, holds the right O’level credits and can pay normally stands a fair chance. That is my reading of the market, not an RNU statistic.
Economics shares its O’level table with Accountancy, Business Administration and Banking and Finance at RNU. If Economics fills, a change of course to one of them may be possible. See the RNU Banking and Finance cut-off mark post and ask Admissions before accepting any Transfer Approval.
On timing: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, according to the News Agency of Nigeria’s report of the 11 May 2026 policy meeting. The 2027/2028 deadline will be set at JAMB’s 2027 policy meeting. Private universities often keep admitting until close to JAMB’s deadline, which is good news if your result arrives late, but the earlier you apply the better your choice of hostel and course.
How to apply for Economics at RNU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Economics at Renaissance University and take Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and one of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French or CRS/IRS. RNU says candidates who chose another school must do a JAMB change of institution before it can admit them.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: RNU lists this in its own admission requirements. Its undergraduate page says its JAMB CBT centre on campus can handle O’level upload, change of institution and CAPS acceptance at a small charge.
- Fill the RNU online form: go to rnu.edu.ng/admissions/regular_admission and choose Economics. RNU charges no application fee and says the form takes about three minutes. You can also apply in person at the Admissions Office in Ugbawka.
- Answer any follow-up from Admissions: RNU publishes no Post-UTME test, but it may call you for an interview or ask for more documents, so keep your phone on and your papers ready.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept only when the offer shows RNU and Economics. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and the first instalment: ₦50,000 acceptance, then at least the first instalment of the session fee before resumption. Pay only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng and confirm the payment with the Bursar.
- Clear with your documents: O’level result, four passport photographs, JAMB result, birth certificate, local government identification letter or certificate of origin, NIN slip, acceptance and school fee receipts, and A’level result for Direct Entry.
Warning
RNU charges no application fee. Anyone who asks you to pay for an RNU form or promises a guaranteed slot for money is not acting for the university. A genuine offer appears on your JAMB CAPS page, and fees go only into the university account shown on rnu.edu.ng, confirmed with the Bursar.
Studying Economics at Renaissance University
Economics sits in RNU’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences with Accountancy, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Mass Communication, Political Science, Psychology and History and International Relations. RNU is in Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, about five minutes from ESUT’s Agbani campus, and the NUC licensed it in 2005. The B.Sc. normally takes four years in Nigeria; RNU does not state the duration on its pages.
On accreditation, Myschool reported in July 2024 that the NUC granted full re-accreditation to five RNU programmes, Economics among them, in a letter dated 6 June 2024. I could not see the NUC letter or an NUC report page for RNU Economics, and RNU’s own pages say only that its courses are NUC accredited. Treat the 2024 report as a good sign and still ask Admissions for the current status.
What you study
- Early years: principles of economics, mathematics for economists, introductory statistics and Nigerian economy.
- Core courses: microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, public finance, development economics and monetary economics.
- Later years: international economics, labour and industrial economics, research methods, industrial training (SIWES) and a final-year project.
Careers
Economics graduates work as analysts in banks and investment firms, in planning and budget offices in government, in research and policy organisations, in NGOs and development projects, and in data roles that need statistics. Many add a master’s degree or a professional qualification in finance or data.

Mistakes that cost Economics applicants an RNU place
- Leaving Mathematics out of the UTME: it is fixed in the Economics line.
- Physics as the fourth subject without checking: it is not on the brochure’s Arts or Social Science list.
- A pass in Mathematics or Economics: RNU wants credits in both.
- RNU not your first choice: fix it with a JAMB change of institution.
- Accepting on CAPS too early: once you accept, the offer from any other school falls away.
If you are sitting the UTME again, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result.
