ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Industrial Physics 2027/2028: Aggregate Breakdown, Requirements and Screening

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Industrial Physics in 2027/2028 is 160, and no merit score or aggregate formula is published. See the JAMB subjects, O’level and DE rules, an illustrative aggregate breakdown and a safe target.

The ESUT cut off mark for Industrial Physics for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 did not name Industrial Physics in any of its higher bands, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies. If you had 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right subjects, you could register for screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

The minimum and the score that actually gets admitted are different things, and ESUT only publishes the first. This guide gives you the official figure and its history, a safe target score marked as advice, the JAMB subject combination and O’level rules, a breakdown of how aggregate-style ranking would look for an Industrial Physics candidate (ESUT has not published a formula, and I say so plainly), the CAPS steps, and what the degree leads to.

Keep the two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score that was actually admitted into the course after screening, and ESUT does not announce it. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first as the second.

Industrial Physics sat in the general band in both years I could trace. In 2026/2027 ESUT named Civil and Electrical/Electronic Engineering at 180, and those courses pull from the same Physics and Mathematics pool. Candidates who miss them are often offered Industrial Physics, which is one reason I would not plan around 160.

Some blogs quote much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for courses such as Medicine (314) and Nursing (290) without an ESUT document behind them. None of those lists gives an official figure for this course, so ignore any you see.

Safe target score for Industrial Physics at ESUT (my advice)

This is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Industrial Physics is less crowded than ESUT’s engineering and computing courses, but its applicants include people who missed those courses with decent scores. Since ESUT ran no screening test in 2026/2027, your UTME score and O’level grades are all ESUT has to compare you on.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Industrial Physics
160 to 174Eligible, but you are near the line. Good Physics and Mathematics grades matter.
175 to 194A fair to good chance.
195 to 214A good chance, and you clear the 180 minimum for Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
215 and aboveComfortable for Industrial Physics.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Industrial Physics is 185 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT has not published a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. Plan to win on your score and grades.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Industrial Physics

RequirementIndustrial Physics
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry or Biology
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one of Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; most universities allow up to two. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure
Direct Entry (general)Two A’level passes in Physics and Mathematics
ESUT Direct Entry remarkA’level passes in Physics and Mathematics; an O’level pass (not credit) in English Language is accepted
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These are from the JAMB brochure entry for Industrial Physics as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). Physics and Mathematics are fixed; the fourth UTME subject is Chemistry or Biology. I would pick Chemistry, because it also qualifies you for ESUT’s engineering courses if CAPS offers one.

The ESUT remark sits in the Direct Entry section and concerns A’level candidates: ESUT asks for A’level Physics and Mathematics and accepts a pass in O’level English. Do not read that as a relaxation for UTME candidates. If you are coming through the UTME, get a credit in English like everyone else.

Our shared fact sheet listed the O’level fifth subject as unspecified; the brochure narrows it to Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science. ESUT’s own advert only says Direct Entry candidates are screened online and cleared on JAMB e-facility by their former institutions.

How ESUT screening works for Industrial Physics

These were the 2026/2027 screening terms in ESUT’s advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you what to prepare for 2027.

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Industrial Physics candidate

Take Kelechi, who scored 168 in the 2026 UTME with B2, B3, B3, C4 and C4 in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Further Mathematics.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 168 minus the 160 minimum = 8 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 168 ÷ 8 = 21.00 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 9 + 8 + 8 + 7 + 7 = 39 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 21.00 + 39 = 60.00 out of 100.

Tobenna scored 214 with C5, C5, C6, C6 and C6. His illustrative total is 26.75 + 27 = 53.75, behind Kelechi. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Tobenna is 46 marks ahead. The two methods give opposite answers here, and ESUT has not said which it uses. Either way, Kelechi’s 8-mark margin is thin and Tobenna’s grades are a risk.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Industrial Physics at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry and choose ESUT and Industrial Physics. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Industrial Physics, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list appeared on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026, Myschool reported. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer and set 31 October 2026 as the end of admissions for public universities. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027. I have not read their terms, so check the portal if CAPS shows Industrial Physics when you applied for something else, or the other way round.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Industrial Physics at ESUT

Industrial Physics is in ESUT’s Faculty of Physical Sciences. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, and the sciences are generally placed there, though the pages I checked do not confirm the building or campus for this department. B.Sc. Industrial Physics in Nigeria normally runs for four years with an industrial attachment; ESUT has not stated the length on the pages I checked.

Industrial Physics covers the physics a pure physics degree teaches, then adds electronics, instrumentation and energy work that industry uses. It sits between physics and electrical engineering. Expect these areas:

  • Mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and modern physics: the core of any physics degree.
  • Electronics and instrumentation: circuits, sensors, measurement and control systems.
  • Solid state and materials physics: semiconductors and the materials inside devices.
  • Energy physics: solar and other renewable energy systems, a growing area in Nigeria.
  • Applied geophysics and radiation physics: options at many Nigerian universities.
  • SIWES industrial training and a final-year project.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). The report names faculties, not programmes, and the sciences have since been split into Biological and Physical Sciences in ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert. I found no programme-level result for Industrial Physics, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status before you accept.

Career paths after Industrial Physics

  • Instrumentation and maintenance roles in manufacturing, power and oil and gas.
  • Solar and renewable energy installation, design and sales.
  • Telecommunications and electronics technician or engineer roles.
  • Geophysical survey work for exploration and groundwater companies.
  • Teaching physics, with a teaching qualification and TRCN registration.
  • Postgraduate study in physics, electronics, energy or medical physics, leading to research and lecturing.

Related ESUT courses that use Physics and Mathematics:

For Chemistry as your fourth UTME subject, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus lists the topics. To compare figures elsewhere, see our UNICAL cut off mark guide.

Mistakes Industrial Physics applicants make

  • Leaving out Mathematics or Physics: both are fixed in the brochure for Industrial Physics.
  • Reading the ESUT English remark as a UTME rule: it sits under Direct Entry.
  • Using Electrical Engineering’s 180: Industrial Physics is 160 at ESUT.
  • Counting on a screening test: ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no test.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
