Dayton engineering graduate admission for international students runs through the University of Dayton’s graduate international admission office, with your School of Engineering department making the academic decision. You pay a $50 application fee, send a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member such as WES, and show you can pay for your first year. The department pages say the GRE is not required for the engineering PhDs I checked. Holders of a bachelor’s degree from an English-medium university in Nigeria or Ghana do not need an English test. The default fall deadline for international applicants is 1 June 2027.
The University of Dayton School of Engineering is tied at No. 50 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking. Graduate tuition for engineering is $1,145 per credit hour in 2026-27, one of the lowest rates among the schools tied with it. The catch for international students is funding: Dayton offers no financial aid or merit scholarships to international graduate students, and only a limited number of teaching and research assistantships.

Dayton engineering ranking
Spectrum News 1 listed Dayton at No. 50 in the 2026 U.S. News graduate engineering ranking, released on 7 April 2026. The university’s own news release says Dayton is tied with Brown University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, ahead of Case Western Reserve and Dartmouth, and second among Ohio schools. Several Dayton specialties were also ranked: industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering, aerospace, biomedical, electrical, materials and mechanical engineering. Dayton’s research strength comes partly from the University of Dayton Research Institute and its long ties to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, so aerospace, materials and sensing work is a big part of graduate life here.
Departments and graduate programmes
| Level | Programmes |
|---|---|
| Master’s | Aerospace Engineering (MS), Chemical Engineering (MS), Civil Engineering (MS), Computer Engineering (MSCPE), Computer Science (MCS), Electrical Engineering (MS), Electro-Optics (MS), Engineering Management (MS), Engineering Mechanics (MS), Materials Engineering (MS), Mechanical Engineering (MS), Renewable and Clean Energy Engineering (MS), Systems Engineering (MS) |
| Doctoral | Aerospace Engineering (DE, PhD), Computer Science (PhD), Electrical Engineering (DE, PhD), Electro-Optics (PhD), Materials Engineering (DE, PhD), Mechanical Engineering (DE, PhD), Systems Engineering and Management (DE) |
| Graduate certificates | Aerospace Electronic Systems, Autonomous Systems and Data Science, Bioengineering, Composite Materials Engineering, Foundations of Engineering Management, Fundamentals in Materials Engineering, Radar Systems, Systems Engineering Management |
The Doctor of Engineering (DE) is Dayton’s applied doctorate. In Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, both doctorates need at least 60 semester hours beyond the master’s: the PhD has 30 hours of coursework and 30 of dissertation research, while the DE has 39 hours of coursework and 21 of dissertation research. Electrical Engineering PhD students also pass a preliminary exam, a candidacy exam and submit a journal paper before the defence.
Dayton engineering admission requirements for international students
- Online application and $50 fee: the fee applies to international applicants from spring 2027 onward.
- Education: 16 years of education including a bachelor’s degree equal to a four-year U.S. degree, from an institution recognised by your country’s ministry of education.
- Credential evaluation: a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member. Dayton partners with WES and SpanTran.
- Transcripts: the doctoral pages ask for official transcripts sent directly from each institution. Hand-carried, “issued to student” and unofficial copies are not accepted.
- GPA: a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is expected for the doctorates. Electrical Engineering PhD applicants also need 3.25 in their master’s. Applicants below 3.0 can sometimes be admitted conditionally.
- Letters: three, from professors or employers, for the Aerospace, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering doctorates.
- Statement: a personal statement or resume for Aerospace and Mechanical; a statement of research interests for Electrical Engineering.
- Proof of funds: for your first year, as described below.
Proof of funds rules
- Bank statements must be less than six months old and on the bank’s original letterhead.
- Solvency certificates are not accepted.
- If someone else is paying, add an affidavit of support from that sponsor.
- Your department must approve you, and any assistantship must be confirmed, before Dayton issues the I-20.
- International students pay a $200 admission deposit.
Dayton’s published one-year estimates for the I-20 are $35,300 for an engineering master’s and $36,920 for an engineering doctorate. These cover fall and spring tuition, 12 months of living costs and the required health insurance. The page does not say which academic year they are for, so check the figure on your I-20 request form.
English test minimums and waivers
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 4.5 on the new scale (80 on the old scale) |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 |
| PTE Academic | 60 |
| iTEP | 4.5 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 160 |
| ELS | Level 112 |
- Some programmes set higher scores than these university minimums.
- You do not need a test if your bachelor’s or higher degree is from an English-medium institution in Nigeria, Ghana, the United Kingdom, Ireland, English-speaking Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Belize or the English-speaking Caribbean, or from a regionally accredited U.S. school.
- Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and other African countries are not on Dayton’s waiver list, so applicants from those countries need a score.
GRE policy
The Aerospace, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering doctoral pages each say the GRE is not required and that you may submit a score to support your application. Dayton’s international graduate page, however, still names the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering PhDs among programmes that require it. Because the two pages disagree, email the department before you skip the test. If you have a good score already, send it to code 1834 and remove the doubt.
Dayton engineering deadlines for 2027
| Intake | International applicant deadline | Department guide date (doctorates) |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 | 1 November 2026 | 15 November 2026 |
| Summer 2027 | 1 March 2027 | 15 March 2027 |
| Fall 2027 | 1 June 2027 | 15 June 2027 |
| Assistantship consideration (fall 2027) | Apply by 31 March 2027 | Offers by 1 May 2027 |
The doctoral pages describe their dates as approximate and say applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so confirm with the department chair. The international office dates apply unless your programme states otherwise. Evaluation of your file takes two to six weeks, and an admission decision is valid for one academic year.
Funding deadline
If you want a School of Engineering assistantship, the real deadline is 31 March 2027, when review begins for the following fall. Positions stay open until filled and recipients hear by 1 May. Applying in May for a fall start almost always means paying your own way.
PhD funding at Dayton engineering
Dayton states plainly that international graduate and doctoral students are not eligible for its financial aid or merit scholarships. Funding comes from assistantships, which are limited and arranged through your department.
| Type | What it gives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| School of Engineering graduate assistantship | Full tuition plus a monthly stipend | Annual and renewable; teaching or research duties; minimum GPA 3.5; no separate application |
| Research assistantship | Monthly stipend and tuition support from a professor’s grant | Half-time work in the academic year and up to three months in summer |
| Teaching assistantship | Department support for helping with undergraduate courses and labs | Awarded through departments, usually with admission |
| DAGSI fellowships | Tuition-free coursework and shared resources such as the Ohio Supercomputer system | Ohio consortium; check citizenship rules for each fellowship |
| Mumma Foundation scholarships and assistantships | Not stated | For exceptional candidates; contact the Electrical Engineering chair |
No Dayton page I checked gives a stipend amount. The graduate assistantship page says the amount is set in each contract, paid on the 10th and 25th of each month. Assistants working 20 hours a week are offered single health insurance. Ask your department for the annual stipend, the tuition share and whether summer is included before you accept.
Master’s funding: what to expect
The School of Engineering assistantship is open to master’s students with a 3.5 GPA, so funding is possible but competitive. Outside assistantships, the international aid page points to private options: MPOWER Financing, which also runs summer scholarships, and interest-free loans of up to $15,000 from the Organization of American States for citizens of its member countries in the Americas. Most international master’s students at Dayton pay for themselves, and the low per-credit rate is the main reason they choose it.
Dayton engineering tuition and cost
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition, all science and engineering programmes (certificate, MS, PhD, DE) | $1,145 per credit hour |
| Audit rate | $573 per credit hour |
| Application charge | $50 |
| Admission deposit, international students | $200 |
| Graduation charge | $125 |
| Health and wellbeing charge (optional for engineering) | $300 per semester |
| Personal spending allowance (cost of attendance) | $4,500 |
| Books and supplies allowance | $750 |
A 30-credit master’s, if that is your programme’s total, comes to $34,350 in tuition at the 2026-27 rate, by my arithmetic. Check the credit total for your programme in the graduate catalogue. Housing, food and insurance come on top, which is why the I-20 estimate for one year is about $35,300 even though one year of tuition is less.
STEM OPT after a Dayton engineering degree
F-1 students who finish a degree get 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Graduates of degrees whose CIP code is on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months, so up to three years of U.S. work in total. Engineering, computer science and electro-optics degrees normally qualify. Dayton’s location near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base brings many aerospace and defence employers, but note that many defence jobs require U.S. citizenship. Confirm your programme’s CIP code with Dayton’s international student office before you enrol.
Admission statistics
Dayton does not publish graduate engineering acceptance rates or admitted student averages. The doctoral pages give the expected minimum of a 3.0 GPA, and the assistantship needs 3.5. Treat 3.5 as the level that makes you competitive for funding.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Dayton
Research assistantships at Dayton are paid from professors’ grants, and many of those grants come through the Research Institute and Air Force projects. A professor who wants you on a project is the most direct route to a funded place.
- Pick two or three faculty: the Electrical Engineering page alone lists research areas from radar and avionics to energy storage and machine learning.
- Write by February: assistantship review starts on 31 March.
- Keep it short: who you are, one result, why their group, and one question.
- Attach your CV and transcript: include your GPA scale.
- Follow up once: after about ten days.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am applying to the University of Dayton electrical engineering PhD for fall 2027. My final-year project at [University] built a [radar or sensing system] that achieved [result], and I would like to extend that work in your group on [topic]. Do you expect to fund a new research assistant next year?”
How to write the Dayton statement of purpose
Electrical Engineering asks for a statement of research interests, while Aerospace and Mechanical accept a personal statement or resume. Either way, write a focused page and a half.
- Name your research area in the first two sentences.
- Show one or two projects with your role, method and results.
- Connect your interests to named Dayton faculty or Research Institute groups.
- If you are applying for the DE rather than the PhD, explain the applied or industry problem you want to solve.
- For a master’s, say how you will fund the degree and what you plan to do after it.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending a solvency certificate: Dayton does not accept them. Send recent bank statements on bank letterhead.
- Skipping the credential evaluation: Dayton needs a course-by-course report from a NACES member such as WES. It takes weeks, so order it early.
- Applying with a three-year degree: Dayton asks for 16 years of education including a four-year bachelor’s equivalent. A three-year degree may not meet this.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: leave it to the evaluation report.
- Assuming Kenya or South Africa is on the English waiver list: they are not. Nigeria and Ghana are, for English-medium degrees.
- Expecting a merit scholarship: international graduate students are not eligible for Dayton’s merit aid.
- Applying in May for funding: assistantship review starts on 31 March.
Costs not covered by funding
- The $50 application fee and the $200 international admission deposit.
- WES or other NACES evaluation fees.
- Visa and SEVIS fees and flights.
- Summer living costs if your assistantship covers only the academic year.
- Family health insurance: the assistantship offers single cover only.
Who should apply to Dayton engineering
I would apply to Dayton for aerospace, materials, electro-optics or radar and sensing work, where the Research Institute and the Air Force connection are real strengths. It suits a self-funded master’s student who wants a ranked U.S. engineering school at a lower tuition rate, especially with an English-medium degree from Nigeria or Ghana. If you need a full scholarship to study at all, Dayton is a risky single choice because international students cannot get its merit aid.
