Brown engineering graduate admission for international students goes through the Brown University Graduate School application, with separate routes for the Engineering PhD and the School of Engineering’s master’s (ScM) programmes. The Engineering PhD and Biomedical Engineering PhD deadlines for fall 2027 are both 1 December 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. Brown accepts TOEFL or IELTS but not Duolingo. Applicants with a degree from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia and 12 other African countries on Brown’s list do not need an English test.
Brown’s School of Engineering is tied at No. 50 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking. Every admitted PhD student gets five years of guaranteed support, and the 2025-26 base stipend was $52,198 for 12 months. Master’s students mostly pay for themselves, at $10,223 per course in 2026-27, or about $81,784 in tuition for the eight-course ScM.

Brown engineering ranking
The University of Dayton’s 2026 rankings release says Dayton is tied with Brown and Rensselaer in the U.S. News graduate engineering list, and Spectrum News 1 reported that shared position as No. 50. Brown’s School of Engineering is one of the smaller schools in this group, and its biomedical work runs through the Institute for Biology, Engineering and Medicine (I-BEAM), shared with the life sciences. Unlike Dayton or Rensselaer, Brown publishes a five-year funding guarantee for every incoming PhD student.
Departments and graduate programmes
| Programme | Degree | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | PhD | Applied through the Graduate School portal; deadline 1 December 2026 |
| Biomedical Engineering | PhD, ScM | Run with the Institute for Biology, Engineering and Medicine (I-BEAM); PhD interviews in February and March |
| Chemical Engineering | ScM | Billed at the engineering per-course rate |
| Electrical and Computer Engineering | ScM | Billed at the engineering per-course rate |
| Environmental Engineering | ScM | Billed at the engineering per-course rate |
| Materials Science and Engineering | ScM | Billed at the engineering per-course rate |
| Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics | ScM | Non-thesis, thesis and professional tracks; fall and spring entry |
| Sustainable Energy | Master’s | Listed on the School of Engineering programmes page |
The Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics ScM is a good example of how Brown master’s degrees work. All tracks need eight courses. The non-thesis track takes three semesters, the thesis track four, and the professional track adds a 3 to 6 month internship or industry project. You can switch between thesis and non-thesis during the programme. Brown also runs five-year ScB and ScM programmes for its own undergraduates.
Brown engineering admission requirements for international students
- Graduate School application: one per programme, through the Brown portal.
- Degree: the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a non-U.S. university.
- Transcripts: upload records from every college you attended. After admission, Brown asks for original documents or official certified copies.
- Personal statement: required.
- Letters: the Biomedical Engineering PhD asks for three letters of recommendation.
- CV: requested by the Biomedical Engineering PhD.
- English test: TOEFL or IELTS unless exempt.
- Proof of funds (master’s): master’s students without full aid are not given final admission until they send certified proof that they can pay for the year.
The Biomedical Engineering PhD takes applicants from engineering, physics, applied mathematics and computer science. Life science graduates must show the quantitative courses they have completed.
English test minimums and exemptions
| Test | Brown Graduate School minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026) | 90 total |
| TOEFL iBT (taken on or after 21 January 2026) | 4.5 total |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall, recommended |
| Duolingo English Test | Not accepted |
- You are exempt if your degree is from a non-U.S. university where English is the main language of instruction, or from a U.S. college.
- You are also exempt with a degree from a country on Brown’s list. The African countries listed are Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland (Eswatini), Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
- If your country is not listed but you studied in English, your registrar or dean can send a letter confirming English was the main language of instruction.
- Your waiver status shows on the application status page three to five business days after you submit.
- TOEFL scores go to code 3094. IELTS scores go to “Brown University Graduate School” in the IELTS system; unofficial test report forms are not accepted.
Brown’s exemption depends on where your degree comes from, not your passport. A Nigerian with a degree from a Nigerian university is exempt. A Nigerian who studied in a non-English-medium country would need a score or a language of instruction letter.
GRE policy
Brown dropped the GRE requirement for 24 PhD programmes in 2019, and Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science were among them. The I-BEAM admissions page lists the GRE as optional for the Biomedical Engineering PhD. The School of Engineering pages I checked do not state a GRE rule for the Engineering PhD or the ScM programmes, so check the requirements in your programme’s application before you register for the test.
Application fee and waivers
The Brown pages I checked do not state the fee amount; it shows in the online application. Brown offers need-based fee waivers to doctoral applicants. You request one in the application and upload one approved document, such as a GRE or TOEFL fee reduction voucher, with a short note on your hardship. Most of the other approved documents are U.S. forms like the FAFSA, so the voucher route is the practical one for most international applicants. Submit the request at least two weeks before your deadline.
Brown engineering deadlines for 2027
| Programme | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering PhD | Fall 2027 | 1 December 2026 |
| Biomedical Engineering PhD | Fall 2027 | 1 December 2026 |
| Computer Science PhD | Fall 2027 | 15 December 2026 |
| Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics ScM | Fall 2027 | Priority 1 February 2027; international 1 April 2027; final 1 April 2027 |
| Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics ScM | Spring 2027 | Final 1 November 2026 |
The ScM page lists 1 October as the international spring date, which has passed for spring 2027, so international applicants should aim for fall 2027. Its “upcoming dates” box also gives 15 October for spring, which conflicts with its own table, so confirm with the School of Engineering at engingrad@brown.edu. PhD deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
PhD deadline is early
The Engineering PhD and Biomedical Engineering PhD close on 1 December 2026, earlier than many U.S. schools. Ask your referees for letters in October, and send your test scores by mid-November so they arrive in time.
PhD funding at Brown engineering
Brown guarantees five years of support to every incoming PhD student who stays in good standing. The package covers:
- A stipend, paid monthly from the end of September.
- Full tuition remission.
- The health services fee.
- A health insurance subsidy, plus dental insurance.
- Summer support.
| Doctoral base stipend, 2025-26 (FY26) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Fall term | $19,574.25 |
| Spring term | $19,574.25 |
| Summer | $13,049.50 |
| 12-month total | $52,198 |
These are the latest figures Brown has posted. The 2026-27 rate is not on the stipend page yet, and your offer letter will state it. The money comes from the Graduate School, your department, faculty research grants or outside fellowships, depending on the year. The guarantee applies the same way to international students, which matters because many schools cannot promise that.
Master’s funding: what to expect
Brown says most master’s students are self-supported and that aid is set by each programme, not centrally. Ask the director of graduate study for your ScM whether any partial scholarships exist. Federal loans are for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, so international students rely on savings, sponsors or private lenders. Budget for the whole programme before you accept.
Brown engineering tuition and cost of attendance
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Engineering ScM tuition | $10,223 per course |
| Biomedical Engineering ScM tuition | $9,320 per course |
| Estimated engineering ScM tuition, 8 courses | $81,784 |
| Estimated Biomedical Engineering ScM tuition, 8 courses | $74,560 |
| Health services fee | $1,296 a year |
| Student health insurance (15 August 2026 to 14 August 2027) | $5,283 |
| Graduate student activities fee | $90 a year |
| Student recreation fee | $110 a year |
| Academic record fee (one time) | $100 |
| Living costs for visa purposes | $26,667 for 9 months or $35,556 for 12 months |
The tuition totals use 2026-27 rates only. A three or four semester ScM that runs into 2027-28 will cost more because rates rise each year. Brown also asks for $6,996 more in proof of funds for a spouse and $4,980 for each child, and it does not offer on-campus housing for married graduate students.
STEM OPT after a Brown engineering degree
F-1 students who finish a degree get 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). Graduates of degrees whose CIP code is on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a further 24 months, so up to three years of U.S. work in total. Brown engineering degrees normally qualify, and the professional ScM track builds in an internship that you can use to start your network. Confirm the CIP code for your exact programme with Brown’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services before you enrol.
Admission statistics
Brown’s School of Engineering does not publish graduate acceptance rates or average scores for admitted students. The Graduate School says decisions come four to eight weeks after the programme deadline, and they are final with no appeal. Admission can sometimes be deferred, but financial aid offers cannot.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Brown
Each Brown PhD student needs a faculty member able to host them in a lab. Biomedical Engineering interviews shortlisted applicants in February and March, so a professor who already knows your name has an advantage.
- Pick two or three faculty: from the School of Engineering research pages or I-BEAM. Read a recent paper from each.
- Write in October: the deadline is 1 December.
- Keep it short: five sentences on your background, one result, why their lab, and one question.
- Attach a one-page CV: show your grading scale.
- Follow up once: about ten days later.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am preparing an application to the Brown Engineering PhD for fall 2027. At [University] I worked on [project], where I [method] and reached [result]. Your recent work on [topic] is close to what I want to study. Will you be considering new PhD students for next year?”
How to write the Brown engineering personal statement
- Open with the research question or engineering problem that drives you.
- Give detail on one or two projects: what you did, how and what came out of it.
- Name two or three Brown faculty and explain the overlap in a sentence each.
- For biomedical work, mention any links to clinical partners or the medical school that matter to you.
- For the ScM, say which track you want (thesis, non-thesis or professional) and why.
- Keep it to about two pages, and explain any weak grades briefly.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending a Duolingo score: Brown’s Graduate School does not accept it.
- Missing the 1 December PhD deadline: it is earlier than most.
- Assuming your passport sets your English exemption: Brown looks at where your degree is from.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: upload transcripts as issued and state your grading scale.
- Applying with a three-year degree without checking: Brown asks for the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s. Ask the Graduate School how your degree is treated.
- Budgeting for tuition alone: health insurance is $5,283 and living costs for visa purposes are at least $26,667.
- Leaving ScM proof of funds until later: final admission waits on it.
Costs not covered by funding
- The application fee, if you do not get a waiver.
- English test and score report fees.
- Visa and SEVIS fees, flights and a rent deposit in Providence.
- Family costs: Brown has no on-campus housing for married graduate students.
- Winter clothing for New England winters.
Who should apply to Brown engineering
I would apply to Brown for a PhD if you want a small, research focused department with a guaranteed five-year package, especially in biomedical engineering. The 2025-26 stipend of $52,198 is well above Rensselaer’s published 2026-27 minimum of $37,783. A self-funded ScM is a different decision: about $82,000 in tuition plus living costs is among the most expensive options at this rank, so take it only with a sponsor or a clear job plan.
