Stanford GSB MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Stanford GSB MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Stanford GSB is #1 in U.S. News 2026. Here are the Class of 2027 GMAT and GRE averages, 2026-27 costs ($140,940 budget), need-based fellowships open to all nationalities, essays and the 6 January 2027 Round 2 deadline.

Stanford GSB MBA admission requirements for international students are the same as for American applicants: a GMAT or GRE score, two essays, two letters of recommendation (preferably from people who supervised you), a resume, a $275 fee and, if your degree was not taught entirely in English, a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score. Stanford does not set a minimum GMAT or GRE score. It admits students need-blind, and its need-based fellowships are open to every admitted student regardless of citizenship.

Round 1 for the 2026-27 cycle closed on 9 September 2026. The deadline you can still meet is Round 2, due on 6 January 2027 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, with decisions on 1 April 2027. First-year tuition for 2026-27 is $89,187, and Stanford’s single-student budget comes to $140,940. Stanford is ranked #1 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. I checked every figure below on Stanford GSB pages and on the latest class profile and employment reports on 29 October 2026.

Stanford GSB ranking

Stanford GSB is #1 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking for full-time MBA programmes, part of the 2026 Best Graduate Schools release of 7 April 2026. It moved up from #2 in the 2025 edition, swapping places with Wharton. Chicago Booth was third, and Harvard and Kellogg tied for fourth.

Rankings move every year, and a one-place shift tells you little about the education. For an international applicant the more useful signals are further down this page: class size, the share of international students, the aid policy and where graduates actually work.

Stanford GSB acceptance rate and class profile

Stanford does not publish an MBA acceptance rate. The Class of 2027 profile (data as of 17 September 2025) shows 7,259 applications for a class of 434. That is about 6% of applicants enrolling. Because not everyone admitted accepts, the true admit rate is a little higher; Leland’s April 2026 summary puts it at about 7%. Either way, Stanford is the most selective MBA programme in the United States.

Class of 2027 figureValue
Applications7,259
Class size434
Women45%
International students38%, from 64 countries
Average GMAT (10th edition)738 (range 540 to 780)
Average GMAT Focus689 (range 615 to 785)
Average GRE164 Quant, 164 Verbal
Average undergraduate GPA3.76
Average TOEFL112
Average work experience5.3 years
Holding an advanced degree15%
Top pre-MBA industriesConsulting 20%, investment management/PE/VC 17%, technology 15%

The GMAT range matters more than the average. Someone in this class got in with a 540, which tells you the committee will admit a lower score when the rest of the file is strong. It is still safer to aim for the middle of the range, because a low score makes the reader look harder for evidence that you can handle the first-year quantitative courses.

Stanford GSB MBA requirements for international applicants

There is no separate international application. You fill in the same online form, and the committee reads you on the same criteria. Here is what the form asks for:

  • Personal information, education history, activities and awards.
  • A resume plus a professional experience section describing your work history.
  • Transcripts from every university you attended.
  • GMAT or GRE score. Stanford publishes no minimum.
  • Two essays and the optional short-answer contribution examples.
  • Two letters of recommendation, ideally from current or former supervisors.
  • An English test score where required (details below).
  • The $275 fee, paid by the deadline. Letters and fee must both be in before the round closes.

Stanford accepts uploads in PDF, JPG, DOC, DOCX, XLS and XLSX. It will not review videos, photos or links sent separately by email or post, so keep everything inside the application.

English language requirement

You must take a test if your university taught any undergraduate courses (apart from foreign language classes) in a language other than English, unless you later finished a graduate programme taught only in English. Citizenship and work experience do not exempt you. If your whole degree was taught in English, you do not need a test. Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan graduates of English-medium universities are usually exempt on that rule, but if your university is in a country where English is not the main language of daily life, explain your situation in the Additional Information section.

TestStanford minimum

TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)100
IELTS Academic7.0 overall

Scores are valid for two years and must still be valid on your round’s deadline. Send TOEFL scores to code 4704. Stanford does not average scores or accept TOEFL MyBest scores.

Round 2 closes on 6 January 2027 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, which is 00:00 GMT on 7 January and 1:00 a.m. on 7 January in Lagos. If you are admitted in Round 3 on 27 May 2027, you have only a few months to get your I-20 and an F-1 visa appointment, so Round 2 is the realistic last round for most international applicants.

Interviews run from mid-January to mid-March for Round 2, and from mid-April to mid-May for Round 3.

Stanford GSB essays 2026-2027 and how to answer them

Stanford has kept the same two essay questions for several cycles. The limits are hard limits.

PromptLimit
Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?650 words
Essay B: Why Stanford?350 words
Optional short answer: examples of contributions or impactUp to three examples, 1,200 characters each
Optional additional context: how your life experiences shaped how you see the world800 characters
Additional information (only for critical facts, not another essay)1,200 characters

Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?

This is a personal essay about values. Most weak drafts list achievements or describe career goals, which Stanford can already see on the resume. Pick one value, then spend most of the words on the “why”: the people and moments that made it matter, and what you did differently because of it. Small, specific scenes work better than big claims.

For illustration: “My mother kept two ledgers for her provisions shop in Onitsha: one for money, one for the names of customers she had let buy on credit. I was twelve before I understood that the second book was the one she cared about.”

Essay B: Why Stanford?

Start with what you want to do after the MBA and why you need one now, then connect it to things only Stanford offers, such as particular courses, centres or programmes you have read about on its site. Avoid praise of the brand or Silicon Valley in general. 350 words is short, so cut anything an applicant to any school could write.

For illustration: “I want to build a lender that prices risk for small farms in northern Ghana using harvest data, and in four years at a bank I have learned that I cannot do it with credit skills alone.”

Optional short answer

Although it is labelled optional, Clear Admit advises completing it because it is where you show impact. Each example gets about 200 words. Use it for impact from the last five years that the essays do not cover: what the situation was, what you did, and what changed because of you.

Stanford GSB interview format

Interviews are by invitation only, and everyone admitted has interviewed. A trained alumnus or a member of the admissions team runs it, either in person or remotely; Stanford does not take requests for on-campus interviews and says the location does not affect evaluation. It is a structured behavioural interview: expect questions about what you actually did in professional or community situations in the last few years, followed by time for your own questions. Stanford generally interviews two to three candidates per available seat, so an invitation is a good sign and nothing more. Business attire is recommended.

Prepare five or six stories with clear detail on what you did, what others did and how it ended. Interviewers often ask follow-ups such as “what did you say next?”, so vague answers fall apart quickly.

Stanford GSB tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027

First-year cost (single student)Amount
Tuition$89,187
Health fee$843
Medical insurance$8,808
Housing$22,152
Living expenses (food, personal)$19,950
Total budget$140,940

Stanford’s budget page heads this table “First-Year MBA 2026-2027”, although its page description still says 2025-2026; Poets&Quants also lists $89,187 as Stanford’s 2026-27 tuition. Expect the second year to cost a similar amount, so plan on roughly $280,000 for the degree before travel.

Costs not covered by the budget

  • The $275 application fee and GMAT, GRE and English test fees.
  • F-1 visa costs (the visa application fee and SEVIS fee), plus flights to California.
  • Credential evaluation or certified translations if your transcripts are not in English.
  • Books are not listed separately in the budget.
  • Optional global trips, conferences and recruiting travel, which many students take in both years.
  • A deposit on housing and the costs of setting up (bedding, a laptop, a phone plan).

Stanford GSB scholarships for international students

Stanford GSB gives fellowships on need, not merit. Aid is open to every admitted student with demonstrated need, regardless of citizenship, and admission is need-blind. You apply for aid only after you are admitted. Stanford expects you to contribute part of your income and assets, and it fills the rest of the gap between cost and your contribution with a mix of fellowships and loans.

  • Need-based fellowships: the average fellowship for the Class of 2026 was about $50,000 a year, around $100,000 over two years. These are gifts that do not need to be repaid.
  • Knight-Hennessy Scholars: listed by Stanford GSB as a type of aid. It is a separate Stanford-wide programme with its own application.
  • Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship: for Indian citizens only, so it does not apply to most readers here.
  • Loans: Stanford’s international aid page mentions loans as part of aid packages but does not name lenders or say whether international students need a US cosigner. Ask the financial aid office once admitted.

If you are applying from Africa, external funding is worth a look too. Our list of American scholarships for international students covers awards that can sit alongside a school fellowship.

STEM designation and OPT

Stanford designated its MBA as STEM in 2020. For an F-1 student this means you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12 months of OPT, giving up to three years of US work authorisation after graduation. That extra time gives you more chances in the H-1B lottery if you want to stay in the US.

Stanford GSB MBA salary and employment

Figures are from the Class of 2025 employment report, published in December 2025. Only 63% of the class (268 of 426) were seeking jobs; many Stanford graduates start companies or return to sponsors.

The report Clear Admit summarised does not list top employers or a separate breakdown for international students.

What the Stanford admissions committee looks for

Stanford reads the whole file, but the parts it controls most are telling. It asks recommenders who supervised you, interviews on past behaviour, and gives you an optional short answer about impact. All of that points to the same thing: evidence of what you have actually done and how it changed things around you. Your GPA and test score need to show you can handle the first-year core, and the 650-word values essay carries more weight here than at schools that ask several shorter questions.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Writing Essay A as a career plan. Save goals for Essay B.
  • Asking the most senior person you know for a letter instead of the supervisor who knows your work.
  • Submitting in Round 3 and then running out of time for the visa.
  • Assuming an English-medium degree exempts you when some courses were taught in another language.
  • Listing job duties on the resume instead of results with numbers.
  • Missing the Pacific Time cut-off because of the time difference.
  • Not applying for aid because you assume internationals cannot get it.

Who should apply to Stanford GSB

Apply if you have a clear sense of what you care about and a record of acting on it, solid academics and test scores near the class middle, and an interest in entrepreneurship, technology or social impact, where Stanford’s network is strongest. With a class of about 430, it suits people who want a small cohort.

Think twice if your test score is far below the range and you cannot retake it, or if Stanford is your only application. With an admit rate around 7%, every applicant should have other schools on the list.
